View Full Version : Half Dollars

So I go to this burger joint I like for lunch today, and when I get my change back, one of the coins they give me is a half dollar. And this mildly annoyed me: my thought was "What the hell am I supposed to do with this?"

But it got me to thinking: why, at least in the United States, hasn't a coin in a denomination larger than 25 cents caught on? I mean, it's easier to drop 1 half dollar in than 2 quarters. And the dollar coin just seems like a good idea. You ever tried to jam a dollar bill that isn't in pristine condition into that dumbass slot on a vending machine? Just drop a dollar coin in, and you're set.

But everyone seems to hate large coins. They've even tried the gimmick of putting every President on a dollar coin, similar to the state coin thing, and it doesn't seem to be getting any heat. I know in Canada they love their loonies and toonies, so why the resistance in this part of North America? Any thoughts?

Have you ever tried to put a coin between a strippers breasts; they ain't too happy.
Keep the dollar bill or we will have to start putting 5 spots in those bad boys.

This is the only argument I can think of to keep the dollar bill.

That being said I'm a big fan of the dollar coin, I use them as often

Plus its the perfect size when I'm sitting on a corner flipping a coin.

stoopid Vegas monorail gave me back $12 change in hose silly sakajaeyayaya gold coins

it bothered me, then I got over it, then I bought $6 woth of Gatoraide and got the dirtiest look from the cashier, it was like I raped his child (which I later did), i just wasted the rest at the Casino

That 50 Cent coin is way too large, use to have one as my lucky coin

Blame vendors who either give them to clients and annoy them

or give you that look when you give them a weird 50 cent piece

Not that it matters, but I think the US has the only currency in bill form with a value as low as a dollar. Even Canada, they have crap like the "loon".

Thats the Governments secret plan to boost the economy; make larger value coins of awkward sizes. This makes you want to get rid of them as fast as possible, so you buy needless items.

Next time you go back to the burger joint, pay with $2 bills.

you know what the most AMAZING thing about coin money is?

you can use it to PAY for things. WOW! What a concept!

I will never understand the anger toward getting money as change.
Baffling.

I guess we're conditioned to think that coins have less value and are difficult to deal with.
On top of that when the US comes out with dollar coins they always seem to be close to the size of a quarter and that confuses people.
They need to put a hole in it or change the color to make it easy to recognize.

but I'm still standing by my stripping argument.

I thought it had to do with walking around with pockets full of change. Who the hell wants to do that?

I mean, yeah, I totally agree, it's just that when I looked down and saw I'd gotten a half-dollar coin, I did have this sort of little knee-jerk annoyed reaction, this "What the fuck am I supposed to do with a half-dollar?" feeling. But I'll probably get rid of it next time I run out to get a coffee, so it's cool.

I'm just curious as to why I, like many other people, had that reaction.

I understand griping over dollar coins, but why half dollars? Didn't you get it instead of 2 quarters?

That will only be for the Lincoln and Kennedy dollar coins.

They have strip clubs in Canada, and they've figured out a solution to the dollar coin problem.

Which is why I hate the Euro as well as Canadian and British currency.

This line should have gotten a better reaction. (unless you're a purist and are offended he didn't name James A Garfield)

2 pts for Jauble

No head shot for Garfield thus no hole in the coin. But thanks for noticing.

most cash register drawers don't have an extra coin slot so it's a tad more work for the cashier with e half-dollar and dollar coins. same with the 2-dollar bill.

i agree with mojo, i'd hate to have 16 dollar coins in my pocket when bills would fit nicely in my wallet. it would be like buying something for $4.20 with a fin and getting 16 nickels back in change. it would be needlessly bulky and cumbersome.

I've been to a couple of Canadain Strip Clubs, I didn't see any tipping.
The girls pretty much work for drinks and lap dances. The dances cost $10.00 a song,
which sounds pretty cheap but it adds up quick.

yeah...thats how they all talk up there

mostly they just walk around drinking beer, humming "Oh Canada"
or they watch hockey

everything you've seen on TV or the movies is exactly how it is up there;
don't let anyone tell you anything else.
