Paul Westerberg made 49 minutes of music available for purchase for 49 cents today. (http://www.amazon.com/49-00/dp/B001CZCBEA/ref=dm_ap_alb1) I just downloaded it, but haven't gotten a chance to listen yet. It's actually one long 49 minute (actually 43:55) file. Anyone else picking this up?

Here's the info:

And you can download the cover art and read PW's liner note
about the music here:
http://members.aol.com/paulspage/4949.htm

For those of you who haven't heard about this yet, the original
concept here was that on June 49, (that's July 19 to you and me),
Paul would be releasing 49 minutes of music for just $0.49. As
you might expect (because aren't there always?), there have been
some glitches along the way. But things are progressing and the
download is up now on Amazon MP3. Some important notes:

** It's one MP3 file, with a whole mess of songs (literally), so
even though it's only one download, you're getting plenty of songs.

** In order to get the album for $0.49 (rather than the whopping
price of $0.89), you need to use the link I posted above and then:
- Click on the "Buy MP3 album with 1-Click" button
- Download Amazon's MP3 Downloader (takes 1 minute)
- Proceed with purchase

That has something to do with Amazon's system having problems with
a file that is both a song and an album. Always breaking the rules,
that Westerberg character.

** NON-US DOWNLOADS - Amazon MP3 does not accept non-US orders
and an alternate distribution method for international
downloads is being worked on right now. I hope that will be up today.
An apology to all non-US fans who are itching to get their hands on
the new music, I know it's incredibly frustrating.

** The 49 minutes of music is actually 44 minutes. Well, it’s
actually 43:55. That one, I don't have an explanation for but I
assure you that it's still well worth the money at 10x the price.

New article from Billboard today:

Paul Westerberg Offers New Album For 49 Cents

July 21, 2008 , 3:10 PM ET
Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.

Despite the fact that he doesn't have a computer and may never have been online in his life, Replacements frontman Paul Westerberg is the latest artist to embrace the Internet for rapid dissemination of new music.

Yesterday, Westerberg made available a 44-minute single MP3 file of a dozen-plus songs, dubbed "49," for 49 cents. Amazon.com is handling the commerce via a link from the Westerberg Web site Men Without Ties. Tunecore will begin carrying the release later today.

"He finished it on Monday, sent it to me on Tuesday and it was out this weekend," Westerberg manager Darren Hill tells Billboard.com. "It's just wonderful that you can actually do this. The freedom an artist can enjoy these days is fantastic. Can you imagine me pitching this idea to a label?"

The 49-cent price was a joking suggestion from Westerberg to charge "a penny a minute," but Amazon.com was the only digital retailer that "would play ball with me on the price point," Hill says.

"49" has no track list or lyrics, keeping with a long-standing Westerberg tradition. But a handful of the songs will be familiar to hardcore fans, including an alternate version of "Out of My System," which previously appeared on the compilation "Hot Stove, Cool Music," and "Everyone's Stupid," which is written from the perspective of a pre-teen who discovers he's the last to know about his parents' impending divorce.

Westerberg played all the instruments on the decidedly lo-fi recordings, which often feature two songs playing at once for a few seconds and short snippets that abruptly cut off. "It's almost like you're scanning a radio dial," Hill says. "You're getting a glimpse inside of Paul's head here."

"49" concludes with a strange mash-up of partial covers such as the Partidge Family's "I Think I Love You," the Beatles' "Hello, Goodbye," Steppenwolf's "Born To Be Wild," Simon & Garfunkel's "I Am a Rock" and Elton John's "Rocket Man," and a rave-up apparently sung by Westerberg's pre-teen son Johnny.

Without revealing specifics, Hill says "49" is "just the tip of a really large creative iceberg. Paul has been writing and recording at a furious pace." However, he adds that "there are no plans or talk of doing any performances at the moment."

Westerberg has only performed once since severely injuring his fretting hand in 2006 while trying to remove candle wax with a screwdriver: he was the subject of a September 2007 episode of "The Craft," a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame chat-and-sing series a la VH1's "Songwriters," at Minneapolis' First Avenue, during which "Everyone's Stupid" was premiered.

As previously reported, the Replacements' major-label catalog will be reissued in expanded form Sept. 23 via Rhino.

As you may expect, I love it. It starts off pretty straight-forward, with three or four songs seemingly played in full, connected by fades. Suddenly, one song disappears almost as soon as it began. Tracks begin overlapping, with at one point two separate songs playing at the same time, almost like a radio signal bleeding from another channel (this is sort of frustrating on first hearing). Other later songs are played in their entirety, but quite a few are only heard for a few seconds. Towards the end, there are portions of the covers listed in the Billboard article, with the Partridge Family track, believe it or not, getting the emphasis. Finally, it concludes with a nice little rocker featuring his son on vocals.

Now, it's a listening party for the new album!

A few of the songs I wanted to yell "Don't Stop!"....but therein lies the beauty of Westerberg.

No kidding - there's one rocker about halfway through that stops almost as quickly as it started. I would love to hear the full-length masters of each track.

About 14:30 in he just starts in the middle of a tune with this:

"Crashed like lightning, Burned like straw". The song must have been called "Devil Raised a Good Boy".....

Could I hear the whole song please?

I must admit that the end of the album cracked me up. Obviously his son screaming into the mic and Paul harmonizing to make it sound good.

I'm on listen 7 or 8. The more I listen, the more I like it.

The format of it all is kind of strange for the iPod generation, but it's an interesting way to get the listener to listen to an entire intended body of work rather than shuffling or cherry-picking songs. I think it works, and in this case, the whole may be greater than the sum of its parts.

Exactly! This is bringing back the album as a work of art. Albums used to tell stories, regardless of whether or not they were concept albums. 49:00 takes us on a ride that is at times confusing, frustrating, energizing, and inspiring.

My only complaint is that it's screwing up my Last.FM stats. I've played this over 80% of the time this week, but it's only going to show up as 10 or so plays. It's going to look like I spent much more time listening to the newly expanded U2 remasters.

I agree - these days people can barely make it through an entire song.
Sometimes technology is a bad thing ......

There's a bit of drama now concerning "49:00". Last weekend, the track/album disappeared from both Amazon and Tunecore. There was no word as to why it was no longer available, but rumors are that it's due to the copyright concerns regarding the cover medley at the end.

Yesterday, Paul released another new song. "5:05" obviously refers to the time difference between the title of the original release and the actual file length. Here's the lyrics, and they seem to verify that somebody threatened to sue him:

5:05
[German voice, sped up-sounding, ending with: "Zeig heil!"]

[English voice, also sped up]: That was the voice of Adolf Hitler, the most
ferocious dictator the world has ever known. For 13 years he led a reign of
terror. During that period, his public appearances created a state of mass
hypnosis among his many followers. His speech over, the crowds would shout,
"Zeig Heil! Zeig Heil!"

[Deeper, slower voice in English]: And then break forth in joyous song -
joyous song - break forth - break forth ...

PW:
All you Christ
You all tights
Sit by the surprised
To see so many flies

It aint about the money

Dimes

You wanna sue me
Can't see through me
They want a lawsuit
I bought a swim suit
All the girls and guys

And turn to 5:05
5:05
5:05
5:05
Hey! Oooh! Unh!

Loneliest face on Earth

You act like a guide
Will be on your side
I said that sir
Alone

They wanna sue me
Can't see through me
They got a lawsuit
I bring a swim suit
All you girls and guys
Make it known
And join the 5:05
5:05:05:05

Non taxable

Tell me
You decide

Oy! Oh!

Two
What two
A real unknown

5:05
5:05:05:05

you girls and guys
don't the 5:05
C'mon and fly the flag high

You want to sue me
Can't see through me
Inside the innocent walls
They got a lawsuit
I got a swimsuit
C'mon, make some noise for
5:05

5:05:05:05:05
5:05:05:05:05
5:05:05:05:05
5:05:05:05:05
5:05:05:05:05 f you
5:05:05:05:05 f you
5:05:05:05:05 f you
5:05:05:05:05 f you
