Because until a few years ago, we had no proof of any other planets around stars. Then we found proof around some stars. Now there could be planets in the billions. That's a huge leap of knowledge in a small amount of time. The process of how we thought planetary systems is constantly being rewritten. They're finding planets now that no one thought could exist.
Yes, but the assumption had to have been that they existed, even if it couldn't be proved before.

There are a lot of factors involved, and I haven't read up on which one will destroy life first.
For one, the earth is moving away from the sun. We could end up too cold from that.
The earth may tidally lock with the sun, meaning one half of would bake and the other half freeze.
I'm not sure where on the timeline those things would happen. Regardless, the sun is constantly getting hotter as it matures to red giant. It will gradually become far too hot to sustain life.
And there's always the chance of a massive solar flare irradiating us all instantly.

Just because thoughts of the universe and how far reaching it is blow my mind. The idea that we're seeing something that is so far away and not even actually there anymore makes my head spin.
It's the same kind of thoughts I had when I was more religious and thought about God. And how God created everything, but if he created everything how did he come to be? The same question can be asked if you replace God with the universe.

the earth is moving away from the sun but the sun also expands slowly. Eventually the sun will catch up to us before we get too far away. The last part is the answer. We would be baked in about .1 seconds

Great article.. this part sold me:
If I were the pope of Congress, I would deliver an edict to double NASA’s budget. That would take it to around $40 billion. Well, somebody else in town has a $30 billion budget: the National Institutes of Health. That’s fine. They ought to have a big budget, because health matters. But most high-tech medical equipment and procedures—MRIs, pet scans, ultrasound, X-rays—work on principles discovered by physicists and are based on designs developed by engineers. So you can’t just fund medicine; you have to fund the rest of what’s going on. Cross-
pollination is fundamental to the enterprise.

Big Bird Sun (http://www.space.com/15965-sun-picture-big-bird-sesame-street.html)
A new photo from a NASA sun-watching spacecraft highlights a huge solar feature that looks a lot like the beloved Big Bird from the children's television show "Sesame Street."
The image, snapped today (June 1) by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) probe, actually shows a so-called coronal hole — an area where the sun's corona, or outer atmosphere, is dark. But the resemblance to Big Bird, or one of his feathered kin anyway, is uncanny.

What if we had a planet instead of a Moon? (http://io9.com/5929076/what-if-we-had-a-planet-instead-of-a-moon)
Our moon is a pretty big object. It's big enough to be a respectable planet in its own right, if it were orbiting the sun instead of the Earth. (Actually, it is orbiting the sun in a nearly perfectly circular orbit, that the Earth only slightly perturbs... but that's a topic for another day.) The Moon is a quarter the diameter of the Earth. Only Pluto has a satellite that is larger, in proportion to the size of the planet it orbits.
But what if the Moon were size of Mars, instead? It would like the picture above. Check out how some of the other planets of the Solar System would look in our sky, if they took the Moon's place.

The first major meteor shower since early January is expected to appear in the skies in the next week to 10 days.
According to AccuWeather meterologists a Lyrid meteor shower will be visible from April 16 through April 26, with best visibility likely happening in predawn hours of April 21 and April 22.
While Lyrids tend to average 10 to 20 meteors an hour, AccuWeather believes there is a good chance for significantly more to occur--even up a rate of 100 per hour.
Lyrids are named for their location in the constellation Lyra, and are the debris of Comet Thatcher tail when Earth's path crosses through it.
According to AccuWeather the meteors are about the size of grains of sand that strike the atmosphere at 49 kilometers a second. As they travel they break apart as streaks of light, possibly casting a shadow before leaving behind smoke-like trail of debris.
