I am five seconds away from ripping my back teeth out.....
I am on a steady diet of advil and ambesol.
I can't afford the dentistry work just yet... So I am trying to tough it out.

Suggestions?

i went thru that myself years ago, and practically od'd on those two (and actually never got the work done) and would seriously recommend alcohol to kill the pain. it's probably stupid, but it worked for me.

Doesn't Dave have Dental Insurance through XM?

And if your tooth pain is bad enough, go into an emergency room. I did that when I only had health insurance. They billed everything as a medical procedure, instead of a dental procedure.

Also, if all else fails, find a dentistry school and tell them you're a new mother short on money. They may be willing to work something out with you.

Casey:

Advil and Anbesol will make the pain go away temporarily, but won't make a lasting impact. Dental pain generally comes from a tooth fracture, an infection of the root (abscess), or from a myriad of other things that include gum infections, misaligned teeth, and tooth crowding (wisdom teeth are a good example of this). I need to get DrJoe in on this one, as dental problems are really not covered in medical school, to my regret.

First thing is to see a dentist...he/she may not have to do the expensive stuff right off the bat. If you have an abscessed tooth, a course of antibiotics may help for awhile.

Send more details if you have them, and I hope you feel better! At least Julianna should be sleeping all night most nights now, so you can get some rest.

Let me page DrJoe and see what he has to say.

Depending on what the source of the pain is will determine what needs to be done. If you have a cavity that has effected the nerve of one of your teeth it will stay painful until something is done to treat it. Advil will only help so much. An antibiotic will defer the pain for a while by reducing the abscess but if the infection is not treated it will return.
Treatment would be a root canal or extraction for a cavity that has effected the root.
As stated though it could be any number of things that are contributing.
I would be a little leary of seeking dental care in a hospital setting if you can avoid it. Find a dentist who can work with you financially, they are out there and you will be better off..

Immediate care is the Advil you don't want anything stronger if your still nursing
Short term get on the phone and find a dentist that will work with you financially to get you out of pain ie tomorrow. Opening up an abscessed tooth will usually spell pretty immediate relief.Along with an antibiotic
Long term Root canal and restorative work which will be costly.

PM me if the pain is not directly related to a tooth ache it may be something else dental I can make other suggestions there too

Sorry Casey

PM me for the name/address/phone of a great dentist (DDS).

Let him know your story and I'm sure that he'll do whatever it takes to work with you financially. He's done this in the past for friends of mine without insurance.

I'm lucky enough to be insured through my wife's job, but everyone that I've sent to him always thanks me.

Even if you don't go with my guy, don't wait...It'll just get worse!

I went to the dentist...
Pregnancy is the balls cause it kills the calcium given to your teeth in like half.
My doc said it's so common for women who just had babies to come in with cavities.
He said he thought I should get my two back teeth pulled....
So that is what I plan on doing.
The oral surgeon said it would be fairly pricey.... So I have to wait until I figure out how I can pay this off...
I was up for hours last night and not because of the baby.... I finally figured out that if I bite lightly onto a cold water-soaked paper towel it kinda helps.
I need some painkilling asap!

I am glad you went.
After my kid I had major issues with my teeth again and so much had to be fixed. It stinks.
I end up having a tooth pulled instead of redo a faulty root canal... it was cheaper and less chance of yet another redo in the long run.. (also a back tooth... the last one in the row so it makes not that much of a difference)

By the way, I don't have insurance right now either, but when I had my first root canal done I purchased a dental plan, not insurance. They have reduced rates with dentists and that way my root canal cost me 400 instead of 800. The plans cost about 100/ year and some include free cleanings and xrays and fillings for as low as 30 bucks on their reduced rates.

maybe you should look into these.

Very good point I have some contact for these plans if you need some. It can help alot and in NYC/NJ there are some good dentists on them.

yes, mine paid for itself by the time I had the root canal.

of course 5 years later it was the same root canal that went bad and the toot that I had pulled. the reconstruction of the tooth would have cost 900 bucks or so..

Sorry to hear of your pain Casey. And I know how much those oral surgeons charge as my son had to have a couple of teeth pulled before he got his braces on (which wasn't covered by insurance).

It's a tooth extraction, not plastic surgery. See if Beanie has any recommendations for Dentists down in NJ, their rates are probably a lot lower than NYC dentists because of lower costs of office space, etc.

~Katja~
07-21-2008, 05:48 AM
yes, my tooth extraction was much cheaper and done right at the dentists office. just local anesthetics and just tylenol for after and I was good to go.
took half hour...

I would have it done where it's cheaper but still clean, if the dentist office looks unprofessional I would not have it done there

So my uncle is a dentist.... www.nyrangersdentist.com!!

He knows his shit... but he is old and doesn't really like me.

He said the way my teeth are that I should go to an oral surgeon that he knows in NYC.

I know he wouldn't tell me this if it wasn't something he really thought was needed.

Then he said... "if you need me you can call me, just please don't interrupt my golf"

~Katja~
07-21-2008, 06:15 AM
can you interrupt him when your teeth fall out and roll around like golf balls???

You are right, everybody has different teeth.
if that was difficult then maybe you have deeper roots or more (like I do in some of my molars)
Did you have your wisdom teeth pulled before?

nope..... I only have wisdom teeth on the bottom and they don't have a match up top. Those are what I would be getting pulled.

~Katja~
07-21-2008, 06:32 AM
oooh, that's a much different story then. Wisdom teeth are often impacted or partially impacted and are harder to get out. I had my top two pulled and it did not end nice. The dentist got scared and refused to have me back for the bottom ones...
I was fine with that until recently... when all of the sudden my bottom ones decided to push out partially... it's a nightmare waiting to happen...

I hope you find a good but decently priced surgeon then.

The oral surgeon said it would be fairly pricey.... So I have to wait until I figure out how I can pay this off...

My philosophy on this is: take care of the pain first, figure out how to pay it off later. Most health care professionals will work with you on this...figure out a payment schedule, etc. We just don't want you to suffer, Casey. Dave can do all the suffering for the family with his brandings and stuff, but not you!

Let us know if we can help in any way!

Is the the wisdom teeth? Cause if they are, medical insurance usually covers it rather than dental and you just pay your copay.

I waited too long... and they got infected... and it was horrific

I know a good oral surgery group in NJ ... they pulled my wisdom teeth (I had a slight infection, for which they gave me antibiotics) when I was in college.

They're accessible by train, too, if that's a concern. Just don't go there by yourself. They won't be able to knock you out otherwise.

Wisdom teeth suck...don't even know why they are there, I am sure back when cavemen were eating rocks and trees they may have come in handy but everyone I know has had them pulled because they never seem to come in the right way. Good luck...medical bills (especially post baby) suck...but you have to take care of you so you can take care of the baby.

Sorry to hear the news. If there is any. soft tissue swelling don't delay getting something done. Tooth swelling will cause big problems. Wish I could help.

get another guy, if they won't work with you. If you called them and said "I need this work done, but I can't pay it all at once, can you work with me?" I'd be surprised if they turned you away. If they do, they're poopie. If you've been a long-time client, most will work out SOMETHING.

Last time I was at the dentist, he did extra work that I didn't go in for because he said I needed it. I heard him saying "I don't give a shit if he doesn't have the money, it needs to be done" They still call me every week asking where the money is.
