I have a torn meniscus right now and I have to get surgery on it. How did that go for you and how long was the recovery time? My ortho says I'll walk out of the hospital the same day with a cane which seems crazy.

It's true, I had that operation a few years ago. Although with my weight I was on crutches for a couple of days. I went through 3 months of rehab and was unable to work during that time due to the physcial requirements of my job. Depending on your job and other factors, you could be back to work in a couple of weeks.

What I'm getting from my ortho resources is: generally walking without assistance after 48 hours, full rehabilitation within about 8 weeks.

I'll get more from John today; they do 10 of these every day.

Yes, you'll probably "walk" out the same day... but it definitely won't be the same for a while! I acquired stretch marks from the swelling, which was the most uncomfortable part for me- my leg turned into a tube-shape like a Simpsons character. I used crutches and a cane; my grandmother let me use one of her old walkers for a day (I do not recommend ).

Good luck! I'm sure you'll be fine, but know that the "8 week full recovery" estimate was accurate for me.

These are good answers. Thank you.

While I'm recovering - especially the first 2 weeks - what will my mobility be like?

And, are there any exercises I can do pre surgery that will help with my recovery post surgery?

It all depends on how they plan to approach this. I'd defer these questions to your orthopedist. I know it sounds like a cop out, but there's advice I could give that would actually make things worse. Give the ortho office a call, they'll talk to ya!

Find out if they loan you a cryo cuff. It really makes rehab a bit easier.
