About a month ago I started to get back into hiking and running. After a few weeks I wanted a way to see what kind of mileage I was doing. Since most of it was on trails and not streets I couldn't measure it with my Jeep. I started to look into pedometers but they didn't really seem to be what I wanted. That's when I came across the the Forerunner.

Forerunner 205 (https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=348&locale=en_US)
It's a GPS unit that tracks your mileage, pace, calories, route, elevation, and tons of other stuff. The 305 has a heart rate monitor. It hooks to your computer with a USB cable and comes with software so that you can download your workouts and see your progress. There's an even better website (http://www.motionbased.com/) that does more analysis. You can export your routes to Google Earth.
I got it for about $150 and it was money well spent.
