Here's a thread for discussion of Blackberries, because there are a number of people here who use them.

I found a few of things of interest to Blackberry users:

This site (http://videos4blackberry.info/joomla/) regularly provides free downloads of current TV shows, music videos and some movies in a format optimized for the Blackberry media player. The files are small enough that you can fir a bunch of them on a micro SD card. I guess the site updates regularly, and the downloads of a show's episode is often available the day after it airs. A review of the site is here. (http://www.bbgeeks.com/blackberry-reviews/geek-review-videos4blackberryinfo-88100/)

Also, I found a site that catalogs 170+ free games for the Blackberry. (http://www.bbgeeks.com/blackberry-games/170-free-games-for-your-blackberry-88159/)

Does anybody have any recommendations for good games to download, free or otherwise?

I am having the same problem zathrus, but only when I email from my computer. For some reason a copy of what ever I send from the computer gets sent to my blackberry.

I usually get Blackberry games and stuff from bplay.com (http://www.bplay.com/)

I have Tetris that I got from the AT&T site and I got the Klondike version of Solitare (http://www.bplay.com/item/Klondike) from there and play it every day and love it.
I'll check out those links you posted. I dont know why, but I am always scared of free stuff because I think it's too good to be true. I know its nutty.

I just updated from an older model to the curve this week. The best site IMO is www.blackberryforums.com.

One warning, the users get real pissy if you don't search your question before posting. So far, I've been able to find the answer to every question without needing to post a new thread.

I usually don't get any spam sent directly to my BB. If your spam filter on your computer catches the spam, it should not be forwarded to your BB. If you're getting recurring spam from the same address, you can 'filter' that sender or the subject to prevent it from being delivered to the BB. The steps vary depending on what BB you have, but you should be able to find it with a google search.

On the other issue, find the setting for 'hide sent messages". Change it to yes. I think it's under email/messages and then options.

Does anyone ever have trouble with their trackball? I have the Curve. Like where it seems to stick? With mine, I always keep the phone spotless and never get anything on the keys or on the ball, but occasionally I find that I am rolling it and its not moving on the screen? Its almost like its a program issue or something.

Also, I want to know if they have a bubble shooter game for the Blackberry Curve?

Today, I've been checking out the TV show download site (http://videos4blackberry.info/wp/) I linked in my first post. It's beyond awesome. It could be organized better, and it would always be better if there was more content, but this is a pretty awesome way to load up your Blackberry with entertainment for a commute or a trip.

It could be that the trackball just needs to be cleaned or replaced (http://www.blackberryinsight.com/2007/06/13/how-to-clean-your-blackberrys-trackball/). Even if you keep it immaculate, normal use is going to get the trackball dirty over time. I just had my my 8830 replaced because it stopped taking a charge, and the difference in color between the new model's trackball and the old one was definitely noticable. I did remove my track ball once for cleaning, and it was pretty easy to do. If cleaning doesn't help, order a new trackball and replace it. I've noticed that the replacements can be purchased online relatively cheaply, and the process of replacement is pretty easy.

Wait, how do you get the ball out? Does it lift out or something? (EDIT: never mind, I just saw your link..)

Also, have you seen this? Anyone know how or when this OS is coming out or how to get it if it does? How would you update an OS anyway?

If you're thinking about getting a Blackberry, you might want to wait until they release the Blackberry Thunder (http://videos4blackberry.info/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=381&Itemid=203). It's Blackberry's answer to the iPhone.

http://www.eliteblackberry.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/music-shots-thunder-21.jpg

I read somewhere that it's supposed to be released in August.

My boss just got me the Curve two weeks ago and I love it.

And he doesn't care what I do with it just as long as I answer my calls from him and my clients.

Great thread mikeyboy. I've already learned more about my Curve in the last 12 hours than I have in the last 2 weeks.

That Thunder looks pretty cool. But I think if I am going that route I'd buy an iPhone.
I like actual buttons. This guy in my class whips out his iPhone and uses it as a calculator and while it looks cool, its all smeared and greasy looking and it skeeves me out to see it.
I hear it is not nearly as easy to type on the iPhone as it is on the Blackberry.

One more thing, do not believe anyone who tells you that magnetic holsters will not effect your Blackberry, because one of them ruined mine, and I had to spend a lot of money to get mine replaced after the magnet caused it to crap out. Get a velcro closure holster instead.
I found one that fit it perfect in Home Depot of all places for like $8 and it came with a small flashlight! It was right next to the registers.

I already love it, but I'm incredibly annoyed already with the multiple messaging. I get copies of the things I send from my email address. Also, my work email forwards to my gmail, but I have both setup on my blackberry so I can send from both emails. So now I get two copies of every email on my blackberry. I wish there was a way to make it so I can just send from one email without actually getting the email. Or, I wish I wasn't so fucking ocd and could just let unread messages sit there without it bothering me.

I was having trouble with the trackball, but only when I was trying to take a picture. I took it back to the store and they gave me the address of a repair center. Took it there and was told that the phone either picked up a virus or that there was a software problem. Either way, they had to replace the phone at no charge. the one that i have now, (same phone curve) seems to be working fine. It was a pain in the ass to have to set everything up again and to keep my photos, i had to email them to mu home computer. Basically the only thing that they can save is your address book, if its been saved to the syms card.

Underdog - If you click the 'menu' button while on the message, there is an option to 'filter sender'. You can change the setting there to prevent forwarded messages from being sent to the BB. It sounds like you would want to filter messages from one of your accounts, so you would still receive the email from the other account.

I use the 'filter' to keep lots of messages from going to BB when I still want to receive them on my office computer. Good luck with it.

I got a new theme a few days ago and I love it. Before this I had the iBerry theme that looked just like the iPhone screen. This is almost like that, but its better and easier to read text. I got it on bplay.com for $7.99

Or, I wish I wasn't so fucking ocd and could just let unread messages sit there without it bothering me.
This was brought up on another thread, and it was driving me nuts, too. Every time I send an email from my Gmail account, it would get sent back to my phone. Here's the fix.

Problem

A Gmail webmail account, for example New name@gmail.com (http://gmail.com/), is integrated with the BlackBerry Internet Service account. When sending an email message from the BlackBerry smartphone using the Gmail service book (name@gmail.com (http://gmail.com/)) or from the Gmail webmail account web site, a copy of the sent email message arrives on the BlackBerry smartphone as a new email message.

Cause

Gmail webmail accounts do not have separate sent items and inbox folders. The Gmail account web page contains a Sent Mail link on the left side, but this is not a separate folder from the inbox.
Gmail webmail messages are grouped into conversations, resulting in all sent messages and replies from others appearing as a single email message entry in the inbox. This allows for easy reading and viewing on the Gmail web page, but, when integrated with the BlackBerry Internet Service account, results in copies of sent email messages arriving on the BlackBerry smartphone as new email messages.

Resolution

To prevent sent messages from returning to the BlackBerry smartphone each time, create a filter in the BlackBerry Internet Service account to block the sending of those messages to the BlackBerry smartphone.
To create a filter, perform the following:
Log in to the BlackBerry Internet Service account. For instructions on how to log in to the BlackBerry Internet Service account, see KB03781 (http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=KB03781&sliceId=SAL_Public&dialogID=44828287&stateId=0%200%2020760674).
Click the Filters icon next to the integrated Gmail account.

I just tried it, and it works perfectly! On one messageboard, someone brought up the issue of filtering your own gmail address, when you want to send an email to yourself. It's no big deal. If you send yourself an email, it won't go to your phone, but it will still go to your gmail account. No big deal. Especially, if you get Gmail for blackberry, which will run off your browser, instead of your blackberry email account.

I think I said that right.

What is the app used on a BlackBerry to recieve streaming MP3?

Is there a free one?

I don't have the phone; but think I can get the audio from satellite radio to one no problem.

web controller that looks and functions like a regular BlackBerry app may be within my abilities after playing with a simulator, (Fledge) I picked up.

BinaryBimbo

Here is what the web control looks like now and how it looks in IE on a regular monitor.

http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s311/SatAmp/internet_explorer_browser_with_curr.png
http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s311/SatAmp/blackberry_browser_with_current_sat.png

I can make a web control that is way smaller than the old one for my next xm app.
if we can get the BlackBerry to accept the stream, (ala WinAmp/Media Player on a comp), it should be easy to get your own custom stream from your own tuner.

BinaryBimbo
08-11-2008, 06:13 AM
I need a media player application that accepts an MP3 stream, or if there is a BlackBerry streaming protocol library I may be able to work on that to convert MP3 to whatever the BB protocol is.

I can connect to my app generated MP3 server, and I can of course send the web control html; but the connection to the server times out because the BlackBerry doesn't accept the stream yet.

If someone has a media player for BlackBerry that accepts a stream; I can do this.

Otherwise it is way too specialized for me to devote myself to it.

I got my 8130 delivered yesterday. Nice little phone with all the extas I want. (though I still prefer my 7100)
Anyway, when I was done activating, I wanted to switch the 7100 over to Sean. No problem. Sprint was more than helpful. We got everything synched.
This afternoon I wiped the data on the unit, set up his e-mails, and was good to go. I rebooted, then got the dreaded jvg error 201. I tried a few things, but to no avail.
I called Sprint, and the BlackBerry specalist said there was nothing to be done. It was dead! She directed me to the nearest Sprint store.
I bit my knuckle, and thanked her for her time.

Thank goodness for our friends at pinstock.com

I had to download a DOS based javaloader. Wipe the unit clean. Reload the OS and all the software and apps. Re-synch, re-clean and reset. It was basically a format of the phone.
Bottom line, It is running faster than it ever did!

Not sure on the wifi feature, but definitely curve over pearl. The screen is much bigger, and the keys are way better.

Or, you can wait till the BB Bold comes out in a week or two.. It has video, touch screen [?], g3, itunes [?], regular web browsing, much higher resolution screen, and a street price of $699'ish. It can also be found on ebay at the moment for $1200'ish  .

If you need help getting them shoot me a PM and I will try to help you get the stuff.

A warning of sorts; if you use VS9 on Vista, and still have VS8 installed, the beta plug in shortcut doesn't point to it. You have to navigate your install directories, (Research In Motion), and open solutions individually.

A big FU to Sprint, and a big Hell yes. To pinstock, and crackberry.
I will be registering on both, and will provide you all with the latest info.

Including a 4.5 OS that is already running. Shhhhh!

I have a Pearl, about 1 1/2 years old now, and I can't hear out of it unless I have it on speaker.

It happened a while ago and I never called to complain because I figured they'd just give me the runaround and make me buy a new one. I'm sure me dropping it once or twice didn't help either.

What I don't understand is why the speaker would work but not the normal earpiece.

As long as you do regular backups, your data is safe. I did a full transfer from my 7100 to my 8130 without a hitch.
As for the new phone, wait for it...
By Christmas you should be able to get a good deal with a new contract. And any bugs should be worked out by then.

Also, I just downloaded 4.5

I'm going to try to upload it to the phone. Wish me luck.

I back my Curve up religiously, just in case.

I really like my Curve, and I am really wanting to stay with Blackberry because of the keyboard on the phone, but part of me is also liking the iPhone, which I have never personally played with. But since I am having such a good experience with my iMac computer, I wonder if I would be similarly pleased by an iPhone? Is anyone else on the fence regarding Blackberry and iPhones? Just curious. Has anyone had a Blackberry and then gone for an iPhone and then come back to a Blackberry?

I just got my Pearl 8130. It isc ertainly smaller than the curve, Which is great for fitting in your pocket. It also has the 2 letters per key qwerty keyboard. Which works better with my stupid fingers. I was rased on the 7100, so the keyboard was no problem. Plus, once smart type learns your words, you can enter after 2 or 3 letters.
Beyond that is is the same as the Curve. (The screen is aboot 1/4 inch smaller due to the smaller phone, but still quite good)
If you are looking for full function smaller unit, go Pearl. Best bet is to go to a store and mess with both.

Hottub
08-28-2008, 05:55 PM

Is Thunder the same and Bold? After seeing the above video, I believe I will go for the Bold when I get my new phone in November. I was leaning in the direction of the iPhone, but I think it needs one more generation before they get the bugs out. I love my mac computer and am impressed by the whole product line, but something about that phone scares me. The Blackberry just seems like a better thought out phone, and I like the keys to type on. I think if I had an iPhone Id be always worried I would drop it and ruin it. My curve I feel it can handle being dropped. may change my mind, but right now I am thinking Bold baby

It has a magnet that puts the phone into sleep mode when it's in it. You still get your calls and e-mails, but you can't accidentally call anyone. I removed the clip on the back too, so it's not so bulky in my pocket. It also keeps pocket lint from getting into keys and whatnot. This one is for the 8800 series, but I'm sure they have them for other models.

I will agree with Mikeyboy on the cool technology in this case, but the plastic clip for your belt breaks easily if you do anything that remotely resembles life. Wish they made this, but with a aluminum or steel casing for durability.

Try taking out the battery and putting it back while the power is on. That usually fixes any strange connectivity problems my Blackberry has.

I end up having to pull my battery about 1 or 2 times a month, but it largely depends on the applications you have on the phone and the amount of space the stuff takes up. A good practice is to remove any applications/games/themes you have stored on the phone that you don't use. If you can store stuff on the SD card, do it. Also make backups of the phone - I've already had to revert back to an older one because the gmail app update went weird on me and screwed up my phone.

On another topic, I have a Verizon 8330 and apparently the new OS was leaked a while ago - has anyone installed it and is it working? Was it easy? I'd really like to have html in my bberry email.

Help!!! I was in the middle of a text this morning, and all of the sudden, the ball on my Pearl stopped working right. It will go up and left to right, but it won't go down. The phone's functions are EXTREMELY limited, now. It doesn't have any visible damage to it. It just stopped working right. Damn. I hope it's still under warranty. I can't remember when I got it, but I'm pretty sure it's been less than a year.

You may just have dirty balls.
Or something caught in the wheel housing. Try to gently blow it out with compressed air.Spin and blow.
If that doesn't work, and it is still covered, take it to the store.

If it is not covered anymore, there are a ton of videos on YouTube on how to take the trackball out. I stripped my old Blackberry down to the bone, and was able to put it back together.

I am soon eligible for an upgrade and I want the Bold, now it seems like I will have to wait who knows how long, probably next year, unless someone knows something that I do not.

I love the size of my Curve. I think the Pearl is stupid with the two letters per key thing. But after seeing the Storm, I am thinking about that now. Fuck. I just went the the Verizon website and see that you can enter your email address to get info on the Storm. I had bad experience with Verizon and switched the AT&T and have been pretty happy.

your carrier's website should have the most up-to-date OS version, and that will be the only one it provides any support for. Recently almost all of the carries made 4.5 available - EXCEPT for Verizon. If you have VZ, your options are to wait till they release it or locate another carrier's copy and use that. Apparently all of the OS's are similar but there is a file you need to delete in order to use one carrier's version on another's phone.

Forums like Crackberry.com and Pinstack.com have detailed threads - I personally have Verizon and I'm on 4.3, sadly. I was tempted to update my own to 4.5 but I'm chicken shit and I'd hate to brick my phone and have VZW tell me it's my fault.

Look back a few pages.indeed, as have many others on NN boards but some have also had issues, exp with VZW phones. I'm sure the odds are more than good that any build will work so long as the proper steps are taken - but if something goes awry and the phone becomes screwy despite a backup realod, VZW wont be helpful.

Rumor has it that VZ was supposed to release 4.5 on the 10th but that didn't come to pass.

Very shortly after that I get an email from AT&T that they now have the Bold. I go to the store and check out the Bold. Overall its bigger than my Curve and the screen is almost thee same size. Its slick looking. But the Storm has a better camera and touch screen. No one I ever talked to at AT&T seems to known when or if the Storms ever coming. I want to see them both before I commit. verizon seems to hold out on their products a bit longer than other carriers, probably trying to limit possible exposure to their csr's.

the bold has been plagued by software glitches, as is the storm, there's also a new curve coming pretty soon as well... so there will be plenty of options.

BBerry bold looks great, but its a bit big and expensive. Storm- I'd need to switch to verizon (and in the process need 5 new phones for my family plan), and Storm doesn't have wifi; because my number 1 issue is contact management I don't plan on keeping the BBery service, and wifi gives an alternative.

Hopefully the 8900 (Javeline)- which is the update to the Curve- makes its way to AT&T US sooner rather than later; it seems to be better suited to me if it's not too expensive.

Why did BlackBerry enter into an exclusive deal w/ Verizon for the Storm ?

I was under the impression that they had a fairly long and tight relationship w/ AT&T.

Not sure how much money they could've gotten from Verizon to strike that deal but I doubt it could be worth as much as what they could've got from adding the AT&T folks.

On a side note why would we need WiFi on the phones ?

My Pearl seems to get internet connections everywhere.

What does the WiFi add ?

The latest update for Google Maps is nice. I haven't done much with it, but I'm also loving the new beta version of Opera mini. Of the other apps I use for my Pearl, I still love Ramble IM, but I really wish there was a way to get it to use notification sounds. When it's running, an incoming IM only makes a barely audible beep. When I'm logged in, but not running it, it doesn't give any audible notification at all. It just shows a visible notification.

wifi is great, it's a lot faster than the phones data connection, especially with a phone like the curve which isn't 3g.

and i thought this was fairly obvious, but the storm is a verizon exclusive the same way the iphone is at&t exclusive, verizon needed an exclusive phone because of the amount of people who are switching carriers to get an iphone.

Hell when i worked for T-Mobile, they enacted a code within the system for lost contract due to the iphone.

I don't think most people realize how much of an impact the iphone has had on the U.S. phone industry.

If you are worried about your phone getting scratched, I got this stuff on ebay and it is this film that you soak in warm water and press it into the phone. Its really good stuff and cuts glare and adds grip and protections. Just go on ebay and search your phone and model and put "cp" after and it pulls up the stuff.

also i have a friend at vzw whose been spending a lot of time with the storm, and for any of you waiting for it prepare to be a beta tester because the software is still buggy.

And if you've spent anytime with the iphone the storm will seem really slow.

I'm sure rim will get the bugs worked out eventually, hell it took apple a year to get to the 2.1 firmware, so if you are an early adopter just give it some time.

Do people really tell them why they are leaving? Whenever I cancel anything I might tell them why I don't want their service anymore but would never give details about where I'm going. It is none of their business.

also i have a friend at vzw...

Oh yeah? Well I listen to two radio shows.

That doesn't really work. Nevermind...

if you've used an iphone don't bother with the storm...software is still slowwwwww...touchscreen not so responsive...

a buddy had to upgrade the ones at work to the release software, hoping it would fix these issues....its still not so fun.

if any of you are considering getting one, please try one in store, and if you do get one never use an iphone...ever..

apparently pcworld agrees

Looks like I'll be getting an iPhone. I will still check out the Storm tomorrow for myself but I've seen a few videos of people using them and it doesn't seem to work. So unless it really impresses me I will be leaving RIM.

I hope Jim Norton gets the Storm and likes it, because I do want to hear him take a shit on an
iPhone. Just not the one I'm getting.

I don't understand why in the fuck Verizon doesn't carry the iphone. I remember when I was a kid and Verizon started I owned AT&T stocks, and got Verizon stock free because AT&T was the parent company. Am I wrong? Did they split off completely? Oh well, I'm still excited to get my storm in the morning I hope.
