I was messing around with a Storm last night. Heavier than normal. The click function/force feedback is kinda weird. I like the hover aspect of it, allowing you to not click on something. The actual click is kinda weird though. Something to get used to. One concern is that the click feature has a potential to cause problems. It seems spring loaded, so I can see someone bumping it or pushing the screen in too hard and the screen becoming stuck.

Software moved real quick, and the browsing aspect of it was really nice.

Good start, looking forward to what they will do in the future with upgraded models.

8.0 out of 10.0

My Theory is Verizon knew that this phone was ungodly buggy thus not giving a realese date and Holding off ever so long to push this product out. check out PC World and Wired Magazine reviews its horrible. THis phone has lots to be desired and needs tons of work before it can remotely be called a Blackberry. Dumb question did you even go to a store and try it out. Cause if it didn't you will instantly realize that you DONT want this phone.

i waited online for an hour and 2 phones got sold.

there were only 30 phones in the store (that they would admit to) and there was no limit on the # of phones a person could buy. this is my first experience with verizon. i hope this is not a portent of things to come

Blackbery storm Sucks... Now Jimmy has to shit on the Blackberry and give the Iphone a reprieve

Jimmy wants to shit on the iPhone because he'd had 4-6 of them and them all haven't worked for him (or course he checks his eMail by using Safari to go to www.aol.com and signing in there instead of using the eMail feature of the iPhone, so how can we take that seriously?) He doesn't have any history with the Storm.

Yes I have. I went 9:30am to my Coolsprings, TN Verizon store and they were all sold out. I did demo it and it was slow as hell. I do like the Screen tactlie feel but has lots of software updates to come before this is a good phone.

Plus im sure you noticed the annoying hour glass like pause between clicking on any of the buttons. No to mention the Gyro accelmeter, the thing that changes the orientation to landscape also is so and laggy and barely works. Keep in Mind I hate Apple too, so im not being Biased .

For a guy who rails against fake outrage, Jimmy has quite an easy time generating it. Hearing him scream and moan about his Iphone just sounds like someone who has too much technology and doesn't know exactly how to use it.

I don't like touch screens. My hands are too big, and I drop my phone enough that an Iphone is too much tech for me to deal with. So I'm biding my time until I get something nice.

Just tried one at the store (which was packed) and not impressed, the thing is slow and awkward but I do think with some software updates that thing could rock! I did not have any issues with the physical design. The screen was big and bright all the issues I could see were software.

i wouldn't judge the storm by the display units, unless you verify it has the latest software update. The software that most shipped with wasn't the newest, and lots of phones had to be upgraded.

so youll find stores that still have the pre-release software.

hopefully rim re-writes the software for a touch interface, because right now its a touch interface strapped on the same os that all the other phones works...

and hopefully they give a software setting to bypass the "click typing"

once again i'll have to say that PEOPLE DO NOT READ OR CARE A ABOUT PRODUCT REVIEWS to see how many people still rushed out to get this thing its crazy.

"So I innitnally upgraded my 8330 to 4.5.0.66 - The USCC Version and loved it; HTML e-mail is really sweet and the Media Player is improved, plus a few other small things.

One problem that I had was getting more and more annoying was when I had a .mp3 or .m4a playing and a audio notification went off (like when I receaved an e-mail or whatever) the music would no longer resume after the notification was done playing, like it did with 4.3. Another problem that was getting annoying was whenever I answered a call it would go to the speaker phone for ~ 1 second then go to the headset.

Because of those bugs, and as a test, I downloaded and installed 4.5.0.77 from BlackBerry (just had to delete the vender.xml file under C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader)

Download site:
https://www.blackberry.com/Download...BF9F749ACF958EC

I can tell you that the music now starts again after an audio notification and it appears as though the speaker phone no longer activates, if it does it's noticeably shorter. Also it seems as though when I Explorer files I am able to delete files (ie bad pics or what have you) when sometimes I was unable to in .66.

So, in short, if you are going to upgrade to 4.5, IMO it's worth going to 4.5.0.77 even though it's not officially for USCC. Should be said that I run a BES and a BIS e-mail account, both work perfectly fine."

new firmware has been sent out for testing (.94), we'll see how it goes.

and stuggots, what on earths going on with your update, are you selecting the right phone model and entering your phone number, or do you not even get that screen?

if you're thinking of getting the storm definitely try it out in stores, but if you've used an iphone don't expect the OS to be as responsive.... as long as you haven't used an iphone you won't notice the sluggishness.

also know there's a new curve coming out soon with a higher resolution screen but still no wifi or 3g support.

I have yet to find a Verizon store that has this phone so I can se what it looks and functions like. But I have had a pretty good experience with AT&T and think I will pass on the Storm and go with the Bold. I cant understand why AT&T does not have both though. But the reason I left Verizon years ago was because of crummy treatment in their stores and I see that that has not changed. It is almost like you have to take a number to get on the line kind of place. I went to Best Buy and they had a display ready for the Storm, but it was all trashed and they did not have anything at all.

I finally got around to getting this right. I love the new OS! It even improved a feature or two on my Pearl 8100. Originally, the voice recorder would only send voice text messages. With the new OS, I can save voice, and email voice, too. The only problem I had is a strange one. Of all of the contacts in my address book, it somehow deleted the phone number of one of them.

I have the storm, and I like it a lot. I think it's a fantastic phone. As soon as you remove VZNavigator all of the sluggishness you've been hearing about is gone. All the features are great. The card behind the battery trick does work for the clicking screen. It's all a matter of opinion though I guess. I'm happy with my Storm. It has everything I need and works great for me. Actually, no, as the Bold isn't on VZW right now and that's my provider. All I use the Blackberry for is for mobile e-mail, and it's delivered in spades. Size isn't a big issue for me when it comes to Blackberrys, which seems to be the biggest point of that article.

yes, but the new curve should be released on VZW shortly...which i thought was obviously the point i was making.

i'd hate using my upgrade and having the phone i purchase be replaced by a new model a few weeks later.

It's really not going to keep me up nights, considering I paid $100.00 for it with rebates, sales, and work discounts- not to mention I'll be reimbursed for it later on. Can't exactly tell work, "Hey thanks for the free Blackberry but can I wait to get it a few weeks? There's a better version coming out I think maybe. You guys can wait for me to have access that long, right?"

Unless the new Curve's going to have the ability to blow me or pay my bills I don't really care.

Nope. While there is some debate over what exactly a "Smartphone" is, it is definitely not limited to flip phones or Windows Mobile devices. I am pretty sure any Blackberry would be considered a Smartphone (except those very early ones that did not actually have phones on them) http://searchmobilecomputing.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid40_gci330613,00.html

Smartphones are the ideal productivity solution for both voice and data for your mobile workforce. They'll be able to stay in touch with the people and information that matter most. Access email, instant message, access the Internet, run business applications and more.

Communicate your way: Call, email, instant message, or text message, all with one device.
Use it abroad, too: Support for international frequencies lets you use your phone even when traveling overseas.

The storms return rate is at over 50%......
scary.

Any word on what's causing this return rate? My suspicion is that it's the on-screen keyboard (which I actually tried, and it is not a substitute for the real keyboard on other Blackberries and not much better than the iPhone's), or maybe the lack of wi-fi, which is just a disgusting money grab on Verizon's part.

most people its a mix between the screen being a big ass button and the constantly lagging OS.

People were initially asked to wait for updated software, the lagging has gotten a lot better....but the phone shipped with awful firmware.... hard to get over a bad first impression.

The click screen is one big button, when you type all the keys use the same button.

On a computer keyboard, or the bb curve etc, each key has its own button.... The storm has ONE button, the screen is ONE BUTTON.... Not sure how to be any clearer.

Hopefully eventually the phone won't necessitate the "click" to register a keystroke.

i'm saying that each key doesn't have its own contact point....they all activate the same single button underneath the screen.

you highlight on screen, you press the screen down to type.

unlike a curve or a keyboard, each key doesn't have its own button beneath it that registers the click, you type by highlighting then pressing down on the screen which activates the highlighted selection on the screen..

the entire screen rests on one button.....i dont know how else to say it.

and if from that you somehow get you can't "type" on it....then i give up.

I guess my point has been, so what if it's all one button, as long as you can type e-mails using the touch screen which you can. You say that the fact that there is one button causes a problem that will drive us "mad." What's the problem?

Is it any different than typing on the iPhone/iTouch? Cause I have no problem typing on there.

Drjoek, what type of BB? I've heard that you can get a new outter shell for 45 bucks.

Unlike the iphone the BB curve/perl/ etc all have plastic screens (even the bold) kinda sucks.. The good thing is that the plastic is just a cover and the actual screen is below.

You can get a pack of 10 screen protectors from a store like wal mart which will save you some frustrations.

And to eli, unlike the iphone which doesn't require you to physically push down on the screen to activate a button to type, the storm requires you to select the letter by touching the screen.

At this point on the iphone you wouldve typed the letter, on the storm this highlights the letter, you then push down on the screen thus typing the letter.

I'm sure this will still make no sense to you, but donnie apparently gave up.

if you can't secure a new bb shell, check out Applesauce polish on zagg.com - it's labeled for ipods but it works on anything. If you have a lot of light (not deep) scratches, this stuff is great for buffing them out/clearing them out. I use it on mine every week.

I'd also recommend an invisibe shield screen protector (same site). I didn't put one on my curve but I use it on my media player and 2 years later, no scratches.

1. Download desired OS to your PC
2. Install/run OS to PC
3. Delete vendor.xml file. It's located in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader (only if your not with Orange UK)
4. Connect BB to Desktop Manager and it should prompt the upgrade. If not click app loader and that should initialize it.
5. Do not unplug BB during the process. It will take around 30-60 minutes to complete upgrade.

I've asked my provider (bell canada) and have as much as told to fuck off. Their technical dept is for the most part decent to deal with but their customer service is abysmal. What sparked me looking for this software is because I was forced into a new rate plan because I changed from my email from my home ISP to a hosted exchange provider offering BES (incidentally www.exchangemymail.com has been great to work with). Old plan was $45/mo which included 400 anytime local minutes, unlimited evenings/weekends, unlimited calling to 5 numbers in Canada and 500mb of blackberry data for email/surfing/chat/etc. Not as good as some US carriers but still not that bad. NO WHERE in the fine print does it say that it doesn't support BES email, just that its for "personal email". Well, my domain has one user....me! And the only emails received are personal. When I switched over to the BES I find out through Bell's tech support that my plan doesn't support it and need to switch over to something else. WTF???? New plan is $65/mo including 200 anytime minutes, evenings/weekends, unlimited calling to 5 numbers in Canada and here's the kick to the balls...20mb of blackberry that like the old plan can be used for email/surfing/chat but woopteedoo supports BES. Its mind numbing the degree to which I LOATH bell at the moment. I can hardly wait my contract is up. Sorry for the lengthy rant but I'm fucking furious.

Today I noticed that the back of my Bold was getting hot. I had a full charge. Then the battery indicator showed it was depleted and needed a charge. It never happened to me before. I was not overly using the phone, it always stays charged until I go to bed and recharge it. Has this ever happened to anyone? I just ordered a replacement battery on eBay for $20 just in case.

You have to upgrade to one of their smartphone plans. The only thing I've noticed they have blocked is GPS. The phones have them built in but Verizon won't let you use he feature in any app unless you sign up for their navigator service which is another $10 a month.

Verizon no longer blocks gps on the storm, it no longer uses triangulation...and supposedly it'll be the same for the curve on the next release.

If you're on vzw and want a BB I'd hold out a few months for the new curve.

I was considering upgrading my VZ curve to a storm but I hear there's a lot of firmware upgrading that needs to be done to get it "just right" and I'm not a fan of a virtual keyboard.

I love my 8330 Curve - the data plan is pricey but the speeds make it worthwhile IMO.

I ended up ordering the clear case and the holster as depicted above. Here is what the clear one looks like:

http://assets1.everythingberry.com/images/product_images/accessories/additional_images/4379/large/1.jpg

The holster has a spring loaded grabber on the top to hold the phone in, and it seemed the most secure to me. The case will protect the phone and also allow it to shine through.

I bought the holster on eBay for $24 and the clear case on Amazon for about the same.
I only saw combo's where they had the colored cases. I debated getting the colored one to save a little money, but I wanted this type.

Watch this video review, it is what sold me.

Anybody here have a Blackberry Pearl Flip? (http://www.mobilegazette.com/handsets/blackberry/blackberry-8220/blackberry-8220-combo.jpg)

The only thing I absolutely DESPISE about my current Smartphone (HTC) is that even when the keys are locked, the send and end buttons still work, and they're raised. They get pushed even when the phone is in the holster or my pocket, causing me to redial the last number I called (unbeknownst to me), answer calls I don't want to, or hang up in mid conversation with someone.

It's really a shit eating design if you ask me. The Pearl Flip is the only logical solution I see to the problem, but I don't know if I could get used to the 2-letters-per-button keyboard.

Greg, since I got the Seidio Innocase holster for my Bold, I no longer have that problem. The buttons face the rear of the case and it goes to sleep when in the case. The spring loaded latch holds the phone in secure and with a rubber grip.

I have had the Pearl for a while now. I am not sure why you would need the flip. Keep the regular Pearl in it's pocket case and it goes to sleep.
Well anyway, I'm glad you are considering a big boy phone. Who is your carrier? Most have a pearl available for 50 bucks or less.

04-09-2009, 05:54 PM
And where would one find the BB pin code?

sr71blackbird
04-09-2009, 06:41 PM
From the BB site:

What is BlackBerry Messenger?
BlackBerry Messenger is an instant messenger program for BlackBerry-to-BlackBerry communication utilizing your PIN code.

What is a PIN, and where do I find mine?
A PIN is an eight digit alpha-numeric sequence that is assigned to every BlackBerry device. You can find your PIN code by going to Options>Status>PIN. You can also find your PIN code by typing "mypin" into an email (no quotes). The BlackBerry will automatically insert your PIN code.

Where do I get BlackBerry Messenger?
BlackBerry Messenger is built into some of the newer devices. If your device does not come preloaded with BlackBerry Messenger, you can download it at http://www.blackberry.com/messenger through Internet Explorer or your BlackBerry Browser. You cannot download it through FireFox Browser.

Do I need a data plan to use BlackBerry Messenger?
Yes, BlackBerry Messenger sends pin messages through the BlackBerry servers. A BlackBerry internet plan is required to use this functionality.

Does BlackBerry Messenger cost money to use?
No, BlackBerry Messenger is free to use. It simply uses data from your data plan. It does not use SMS.

How do I add a contact to BlackBerry Messenger?
To add a contact, first open BlackBerry Messenger. Click the track wheel/track ball to bring up the menu and select add contact. When you click on add contact, you will be brought to your address book to select the contact you want to add. Simply click on the contact and select request. If you do not have the contact in your address book, scroll to the top of the list and highlight 'use once'. When you click the wheel, you will be able to request by PIN or by email. Select the appropriate one based on what information you possess. You will be offered the option to personalize the message sent to the recipient before your request is sent.

Are PIN messages private?
The answer to this question is, it depends. If you are on a BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES), you should assume none of your data is private as it all goes through the BES. If you are on a BIS, conversations are not stored on the device, so they should be relatively private. If you don't know if you are on a BIS or a BES, please see the thread: What is 'BES' & 'BIS'?

None of my friends have a BlackBerry, who can I talk to using BlackBerry Messenger?
Have no fear, CrackBerry.com is here! (Ok, that was cheesy ) If you are interested in chatting with other CrackBerry addicts, check out the http://forums.crackberry.com/f51/whats-your-pin-736/ thread. Entering your PIN into your profile on this site may generate chat conversations and BlackBerry Messenger Buddies. How to Add Your Device Model, Carrier, and PIN Info!

Well since I didn't have a protection plan on my Blackberry; Sprint wouldn't cover the damages and even if I had it would have cost at least $50 to fix, plus the $4 a month they want for insurance. Like I don't pay enough for their fucking service.

Screw that noise, I went to Amazon and bought a new front case and tools for $27.31 and did this:

My problem is solved. I did two things that I found online about this. I'm not sure which one actually fixed it, so play around with it.

As stated before, I tried the method of trying to send myself an MMS. That didn't work. In one forum, I saw that you should pull the battery for a few minutes and put it back. Before I did that, I also saw a post from someone that said that they didn't know if the "sending yourself an MMS" method meant that you actually had to send one with an actual file, or just a blank MMS.

I pulled the battery, put it back after a few minutes, then sent myself a blank MMS. All is good, now.

My sister was having a similar problem on her cell, and hers is a motorola phone and I pulled the battery on that and it ficxed her issue too. When I had my Nokia, I did the same thing too and it always helps. So: battery pull = cell reboot.

I sent a friend of mine some BlackBerry messages the other day and when I bitched him out for not responding he showed me the history and of the 4 I sent him he only got the last one.

I've heard of emails and texts getting " lost " but I didn't think it could happen with messages.

Tried all that and it didn't work. Guess I have to take it into the store.

Sr71, I usually pull the battery and sim card every couple days to reset my phone. Usually fixes the problem, but not this time.

Just went to the verizon store on Saturday and the kid told me the second generation touch is due in a few weeks so I thought I should post it here. According to him, they made some key fixes to software apps and other tweaks so it can compete better vs the iphone on the fun app front.

Anyone else have news on this?

Why would u post this in the Blackberry thread when there is an iPod thread? But its okay with me because I just got an iPod touch and really like it. So, I am walking around with a Blackberry Bold in a belt clip and have an iPod touch in another pocket! I have been waiting for the iPod update you are referring to. Hope it comes soon.

I think he's talking about the Storm.

And yeah, the new version is coming out soon. There's been a bunch of leaked pictures of it.

My Pearl turns it's radio off on its own. I have a replacement coming tomorrow. Me and the wife are on babywatch and I can't afford to have my phone not work.

I think I'm gonna upgrade my Curve to either the Tour or the Storm 2. I've been reading a lot of good about the Storm 2 but if I do either phone, it needs to be able to run my apps.

I googled Storm 2, and the images which represent that they are portraying the Storm 2 don't show any major differences with the first Storm.

Picked up a new blackberry today. The new curve 8900 for att. My friend who works there was able to get it for me 100 bucks telling his manager I was going to switch to verizon. And after the blackberry buyback thing I should be spending about 30 bucks for it. I'm really liking it so far.

Same here. I know someone out there has a pic unless it's all software/internal hardware upgrades and fixes.

I mentioned this in the Random Questions thread. Last night, I noticed the time on my Pearl was 6 minutes slow. I took the battery out for a minute and put it back. Then it was 8 minutes slow. AT&T told me today to take the battery AND the sim card out for a minute. I did, and now it's TEN minutes slow! Help!

You are slowly moving backwards in time. Clearly it is not your cell phone malfunctioning but your time machine.

Hmm... I take it out for one minute, and it goes back two. I think I may just take that battery out for about 10 years.

I actually tried the battery and sim card thing again, but left them out for ten minutes. Fixed the problem.

Sirius/XM released the app for iPhone that lets users who have online service listen for free (I know you know, just bitching), The blackberry version costs $7.95 a month no matter what you already pay for and it won't work on my storm! FUCKERS!

I wrote the company that made the BB app for XM, I ask them about the Storm, this was their reply.

Email Customer: Dear customer,

Unfortunately at this time the XM Radio Mobile application is currently not
available on the Storm.

Although I cannot provide you with an estimated launch date, I will add
you to the notification list if it does become available on your model.

Thank you,
Support at XM Radio Mobile

Still love my Pearl, but it's budget cutting time. Gotta put it up on Ebay. I reached another upgrade point with AT&T and I'm getting a Samsung Eternity. MediaNet should save me about $30 a month over the Blackberry service. It was a good run Pearly.:bye:

Has anyone seen the Nokia version of the Blackberry? Anyone try it or know if it has any advantages? I heard it has a metal body.

I'm no longer getting my emails that go to my email address on my phone and occasionally I get an email from BlackBerry telling me there's a problem w/ the address and to check w/ the provider.

The thing is I'm getting the emails in my Outlook Express at home so there can't be a problem with the address itself.

I went to the BlackBerry site and it seems like there's nobody to talk to unless you're a paying member of some support program.

Should I contact my phone provider ( AT&T ) ?

Keep in mind I'm not having any problems w/ texts or BlackBerry messaging.

it's confined to emails and Facebook notifications ( which I'd guess are toed to the email issue ).

Any ideas ?

I had the same problem last week, try doing the following:

select "E-mail Settings" and login

delete the email account which is having problems and exit back to the "Home Scene"

then select "Options>Advanced Options>Service Book"

delete the "CICAL" and "CMIME" files for the troubled email account (Facebook also if its giving you trouble)

power off the blackberry and remove the battery (for about 30 seconds)

install the battery and power on the device

once the blackberry finishes booting up return to "Email Setup" and login again

select "Add My Existing Email Account" and follow the steps to setup your e-mail account.

in about 30 minutes you should be receiving emails and Facebook notifications.

Good Luck

I used to have a Samsung Rant, it sucked ass.

Second week with the Blackberry, and it's great, only problem is I have so many different accounts linked to it (email, twitter, aim, myspace, facebook) that my message light is constantly blinking, even when I think I have everything read.

It's with Sprint, Blackberry Curve 8330
