Ever since the last two or three updates to iTunes my system (XP Pro Media Center) will freeze at start-up. There was a new iTunes update which I just got, hoping it would fix the problem but it hasn't. Lately it works just fine if I keep the iPod undocked until after Windows fully starts up and then I connect it, but it's kind of annoying that it does that.
Does anyone know of a fix? By a fix I don't mean (buy an Apple), but an actual fix. Or has anyone else had this problem.

Just to add to this, this is a ipod classic w/video. From what I'm reading it seems people with all kinds of ipod and systems pc and mac are having the same kind of issue.
I just restarted without the ipod connected and everything started up fine, I connected the ipod and everything is ok. However if I restart my system with the ipod connected I'm certain the system will freeze. Weird.

Try this: click on Start, choose "Run", and type "msconfig" in the window that pops up. Go to the "Startup" tab, and uncheck "QTTask" and "ITunesHelper." Restart.
Without those processes enabled, iTunes won't immediately start up when you plug in your iPod, but you shouldn't have the problem of it freezing up.
You might also want to try uninstalling both iTunes and QuickTime, and reinstall new versions of both.

Not related to Reeph's question but since you know about Ipods...
mine is now just used in the car (dumb battery)- but has 20 GB of good shit I'd hate to have to reload on my new computer off the backkup discs. Anyone know of a way to get it off the Ipod and back on a desktop harddrive?

There's third party software to do that, like this one:
http://www.bestshareware.net/copypod.htm
but you should be able to find free ones.

My favorite for that is Music Rescue formerly known as PodUtil

I'm surprised that Apple hasn't made it part of iTunes where you can pull music off an iPod; I'm guessing it has to do with copyright laws, since they've already got the recording industry on their ass about the iPod anyway.

you're exactly right. they did this so you can't load gb's of music on your ipod and share that massive amount with a friend.
you still can get music from an ipod into itunes. just requires an extra bit of work.

I use Ipod Copy, and it's especially great when my 60 gig is full and I want to transfer them to my 160 gig. I copy the oldest files on my 60 back to the computer and then delete them off the ipod. Those tracks are then brought back into Itunes to transfer onto the 160.
