The grill discussion got me thinking a little:

Does anyone do anything with more primitive technology that they enjoy just a little more b/c they're not doing it with the "latest" gadget?

I recently bought a reel lawnmower to piss off my neighbors (and b/c I'm trying to adapt to when we won't have access to gas - at least teach the boy to adapt) . I get the greatest looks when I'm mowing my lawn with it. It sucks really - I have a bunch of tough (Bermuda grass??) weeds or grass interspersed throughout my lawn that doesn't quite get cut with the mower, but the experience of using it is really strange. It's like travelling back in time a little. There's noise when using it but it's completely different - you don't inhale exhuast, you get almost zero dust... I started thinking of getting hand operated stuff for all over the house. Hand coffee grinder etc. I think it would produce a change in me overall mentally - I'd slow down. Could the cure for anxiety and racing mind be hand operated devices?

Just a thought.

Right I prefer to hear the sound of a motor next door when I want to sleep in not the soundless hand push kind.

just a crack about the 'neighbor' comment...

reel mowers do such a shit job especially if you don't mow the yard frequently...large clumps of browning grass scattered throughout the yard, inevitable patches of missed grass, etc. Without justification or reason, I'm anal about my yard and want my neighbors to feel the same about theirs. That being said I've never not liked a neighbor based on yard-tending habits...just evangelical religious beliefs and abstinence from alcohol.

I see your point... they have pretty good bag catches for them now, and I've been known to get barefoot and simply walk about my front yard hand-pulling what the reel mower missed.

I've resigned myself to pulling out the gas mower every third time now just to maintain a better looking lawn.

Serious about the question though. We've been oversold on "faster = better" and "fossil-fuel driven = better"... not always the case, and I think it takes it's toll on the mind.

Well - abstinence from alcohol, yes but you don't want me as a drinking neighbor even more... but I don't really follow religion. That's a whole other story though... I could be Billy Graham come to think of it... I mean for the pussy.

Reel mowers still exist? I haven't seen one since the 70's.

I have a VCR instead of DVR, I use my turntable and the only way I can play CD's is on my comp. I also recently started getting back into 35mm photography.

I love the way you make my grandma seem so young.

Where I live, a lot of grandmas ARE younger than me.

I prefer manual windows, door locks, seats, etc. in automobiles. We recently bought a new Jeep and the dealer thought I was a little crazy when I was happy that we could get it without the power package. Those stupid things are always the first to break.

I saw someone giving away an old fully manual (but apparently perfectly functional) Ashai with lense and accessories on yahoo freecycle recently. I would put that in the hands of anyone who wanted to actually learn photography before anything else.
