I'm not really too big into comic book,s other than picking up an occasional title or trade paperback on recommendation, but I've noticed that some of the people in this forum seem to be pretty well steeped in comic history. Like anything else, I would assume comics can be a fairly expensive hobby. So, you hardcore comic book readers, how much do you spend on comic books?

Used to be about $100 a month...with my upcoming wedding I dropped almost all of my titles and buy most of my shit at conventions. It's much cheaper that way.

Funny you should ask this question. Last week, I was reviewing my expenses recently to see how much we were spending versus how much I was bringing in (it didn't come out well), and decided cuts were in order. Also, the wife has to go back to work, which she's actually looking forward to.
For comics, I spent $200 last month, and $236 the previous month, and that doesn't include one or two TPBs I bought.
So I need to cut my spending to no more than $100 a month, and less if possible.
So today I told my comic store in NYC that was shipping me comics (shipping at no charge) that I wouldn't be ordering anymore, and also identifed $20 of comics that I would be buying tomorrow at a store near me. There were at least 7 comics I was previously collecting that I won't be getting any more.

i have a friend who works with MOCCA (http://www.moccany.org/), and i usually drop around $50-$100 at the festival each year -- it usually depends on who's there and what grabs me ... the great thing is the personalization of each book by the artists (a characticture by oscar winner michel gondry this year was great)
i may spend another $50 on trades when i'm in the mood for something
i also tend to get a lot for x-mas and my birthday

On average, I pick up 2-3 trades a week. Sometimes 0, last week 5 (including a book that the store sold out and didn't order for me until I got it a couple weeks late). Right now trades run from $15-$30 depending on size of the book (physical dimensions and number of pages are contingencies on price). Most weeks, 20-30, but last week $100.

I bought a Flaming Carrot comic once in 1987. I don't remember what it cost.

I probably spend $150-200 a year, most of which is for TPB's.

I only pick up the occasional comic book or graphic novel these days. It's not for any particular reason other than that I just haven't been around to the comic shops as much and I've been watching my money.

I think I've been spending about $25 a year lately, and that's mostly been for Betty & Veronica digests for my daughter.

It's a little weird that that many adult men are still buying comic books.... isnt it?
I mean, if youre a serious collector, I guess thats one thing...but wouldnt that be a rarity?
And just so I dont offend anyone.... here's a smiley face or two :wink:

There are some very cool comics out there in other genres besides men in tights....
i buy one or two TPB's a month ($50), and that's about it now, no convenient store near me so no steady collecting anymore

i haven't bought a comic in 10-15 years, i DL the dcp packs and call it a day.
i guess i spend a 4-5gb of bandwidth a month.
and to the grown men buying comics comment, i honestly think most comics are marketed towards men, not kids anyway.

I average about $25 a week not including trades. That's after going cold turkey for a year and not buying anything.
Anyone dismissing comics as just guys in tights is missing some really interesting titles and stories: 300, Sin City, Strangers in Paradise, Love & Rockets, Ex Machina, Cerberus, Fables, American Splendor, Ghost World, Eightball, Akira, and tons more.
It's an art every bit as important and varied as film. Yes, 70 years ago it began as a medium aimed at children but even back then adults were picking them up and being entertained.

I believe that the average age of people buying comics is middle 20's (I've seen some varying stats placing it at 23, 25, and 28).
I have also seen a number of statistics that more men age 25-40 buy comics than do boys 18 and younger. If fact, it's one of the concerns of the industry that their buying demographic keeps getting older, and that they are not bringing in more young readers.
Also, I am interested how certain things that appeal to boys get and are kept branded just for boys, like comics, and others aren't.
Does anyone really look at sports and say it should just be for boys? Growing up, I knew kids that were into sports (mainly) and those that were into comics, both groups have kept true to those passions, but only the latter group gets thought less of because of it.

I bet that other group plays totally gay fantasy football too.

Last one I bought was a superman at a garage sale. My neighbor sold it to me for .30$. I think I got jobbed. 3 times what her dead husband bought it for.

I haven't read many books that I've purchased and I have about 50 dollars worth that I have to pick up. I'm like 40 issues behind in my reading. Should I just quit collecting or just scale down everything to like 8 titles.

Last two weeks were 1 and 2 books, so like $15 and $25 those weeks. (1 hardcover each week, a softcover week 2)
