But it was, one movie I'd go see again

My only complaint was the Bowie Song. I was kind of pissed about QT using that song with his attention to detail on most of what he does.
He even made sure that Shoshanna spoke English in her video so that the German speaking audience would not be fully aware of what was about to happen, A La Hans Landa speaking english to keep her and her family from knowing what was about to happen to them.
Brilliant.

I heard in an interview where QT defended his Bowie choice by explaining it was okay to use it as long as it wasn't coming out of a car radio. Or sold radio in a room. He felt the song fit. He didn't feel like all songs had to be from that era. Another of his artistic license explanation. I was hoping for "disco inferno" if that was the case.

Not sure if I'd bank on that. Check out QT's interview with The Forward (the Jewish newspaper): http://www.forward.com/articles/112638/

The movie was so great, I had to go back and watch it again a second time. I have not seen a movie multiple times in the theatres in probably 10+ years. I have been telling everyone I know to see this movie ASAP. I loved Kill Bill, but I think this movie blows Kill Bill out of the water.

My point is that the thought that the film will be overwhelmingly loved by Jews may not be accurate.

"A river derci"
I did like how they never explained the scars on his neck- sometimes, less is more
It took me the 2nd viewing to realize that Eli Roth & Omar Doom were both in Deathproof. They were 2 of the jarheads trying to get with the chicks when they went north to the cabin.
That sneaky prick Tarantino.

I wouldn't say Retards, but they may well be in the distinct minority. I thought that the holocaust survivor was seeing things that weren't there, but that his background, and not knowing what QT does, probably led to that opinion. It's kinda (but not completely) like those who came out if the theater saying they liked it, but it wasn't realistic (because Hitler died). Well, this is Tarantino- it's not supposed to be realistic- its an alternate universe.
Oscar voters are those in the film business- it's difficult to gather from any newspaper article what they will think.

I know I'm coming late to the party. I just saw the movie this past week.
The question I have is, did the Jew Hunter know/recognize Shoshanna during the invitation luncheon scene where he ordered her a glass of milk and was on the verge of asking her a question but didn't claiming "it must have not been important" since he allegedly forgot what he was going to ask her.

i like to think that if she had aspired to any personal glory from what she was planning he would have been able to smell her out. but she was completely under the radar, she didnt care if no one ever knew what she had done, as long as she did it.

But the question was, did he recognize her from the opening scene when she runs from the house after her family gets killed.
I don't think he recognizes her, because he is too ruthless to let her go that easily.
The only thing that bothered me about the movie is why would they decide to meet in the basement bar? They could have met in a far safer place. Just seemed like QT took the easy way out in that scene.

Why was the Nazi hunter worried about being tried for war crimes if the Nazis were winning the war? To the victor go the spoils. In the movie timeline weren't the Nazis at the height of their power (the European map during the British scene displayed this). So why would he be concerned about this that he would make an agreement to deal with the Americans?

Was she a "secret agent" or a "double agent"? If she was a double agent why would Jew Hunter kill her? She could have played it off that she was setting up the Basterds or finding out about the conspiracy to kill Hitler when he got her to get the her shoe out of his jacket.

I'm not sure I'll be able to cope knowing I've disappointed you. Oh look, I'm coping just fine.
So what was wrong with it?
-it moved much too slowly
-too much of it was subtitled, if I wanted to read a movie I'd go see a foreign flick
-it wavered back and forth between trying to be an action movie and a wanna be love story
-while there was some great dialog (in particular the opening scene) there was a lot that really dragged out
-looked/felt like an art house movie and not a Tarantino work along the same lines of Reservoir Dogs or Pulp Fiction

Still not seeing an argument against the movie. Art house flick that didn't try to pace the movie for ADD afflicted 9 year olds, with subtitles (as opposed to fake German accents) and no conventional action/romance plot of a Hollywood flick.

Yeah, OTB, it looks like you have a problem with this genre of film as opposed to the film itself. I thought the foreign languages and subtitles worked beautifully with the film.
In regards to it moving slowly, how? I thought it moved fast, as the events within the film seemed to flow nicely and QT had some outstanding scenes that stood on their own and supported the plot, which didn't make it feel like a long film.

This movie is/was lost on me.
I would never call it a bad movie. I mean... it IS a well made piece of work. But, I never saw in it what so many others around here saw in it.
I too felt it was dreadfully slow. Now... perhaps my expectations were too high. Maybe I thought I was gonna see all snap and patter of the previous QT movies.
Or maybe the media overhyped and oversold this thing a tad.
But... at no time did I feel like this was "the most, fun, outrageous, heart pounding, edge-of-your-seat, suspenseful time you'll have at the movies all year!"
It was deliberate. It was carefully paced. As I said earlier... it was well made. But, I simply did not connect with it. As time went on, I realized that I was not alone. I've met more than a handful of people who disliked it greatly.
The funny thing is; these people almost feel like they were SUPPOSED to like it. They make excuses for hating this movie.
INGLORIOUS is easily my least fave QT film. He is definitely in my top 10 or 20 directors though. It hasn't soured me on the rest of his catalog. But... for my money... INGLORIOUS was a misfire.
If somebody who'd never heard or seen a QT film asked me "what makes this guy so great?" , the last film I would play for them would be INGLORIOUS. I simply don't think it passes the test as MOVIE... much less a Tarantino movie. It just isn't my pace.

I rented and watched it over the weekend. A few things:
1) At two and a half hours it is way too long. That must have been torture to sit through in the theater; even at home I had to stop two or three times and do something else. Thirty minutes could have easily been trimmed and it wouldn't have hurt the plot at all.
2) Ironically, after Grindhouse the reason the project got funded was probably because Brad Pitt was attached to star in it. And he was the weakest part of the movie. His acting was horrible and that accent was worse.
3) Actually, the Basterds could be cut out of the entire movie, and it would be a better film (they could just be in the cellar bar scenes as the commandos the British Lieutenant was supposed to meet) . The whole movie, from the first scene, was the dynamic between Shosanna and Col. Landa. The movie could have just ended with the theater on fire with the assumption that everybody, including Landa, burns to death.
Overall, a good movie, Tarantino is back. I liked it better than some people in this thread did. When I watched it the second time I fast-forwarded through the Basterds scenes. I know this is fiction but in actuality if a group of Americans scalped and carved swastikas on German soldiers, the Germans would have butchered every American POW.

Next time don't forget to rip off the used stickers so you get the better price when you return it.
I had no problem watching it in the theater & thought it moved fast for me. i loved it. I can't wait to see it again. Possibly all time favorite movie of mine.
Agreed. I loved watching it in the theatre. As someone who loves watching Tarrantino movies on the big screen I loved it. I had no problem with the length, in fact it could have been longer. The was definitely one of my favorites.

Christmas morning, wife at work, breakfast sandwich, Coors light, fresh coffee, and Inglorious Basterds. Absolutely loved it.
Was I the only one thinking the film Shosanna made was going to be a sex scene?
I had the same thought, and if you heard Ronnie interview Tarantino, you might think Ronnie thought it as well.

I'll have to give that a listen.
After seeing her the second time on the ladder.
Her being nakie in the movie would have been nice.

The only problem with that theory is that Tarantino has never done a gratuitous nude scene in his career. In fact he's done the contrary in that he's been conscientious of sexuality while placing females in strong protagonistic roles in his films.

Holy shitballs! Now I know why Ryan wouldn't let me see this in the theater with him. I had to cover my eyes with my blanket quite a few times. Otherwise, it was a very captivating movie.

I'm leaning towards yes.
