View Full Version : Fuckin' jellyfish!

I went to the beach today with my dog (we go to the bay @ Sandy Hook, dogs are allowed there all year) and while usually I can spend hours and hours in the water I was afraid to even go in for all the jellyfish that were in there.
Stasha likes to "bite" at the waves as they come in ( she's a cutie) and I was trying to watch out for her with the jellyfish, but she got stung on both paws :down::down::down::down::down:... I seriously was debating peeing on her but a) I didn't have to go, and b) COME ON.
Luckily she got over it pretty quickly... less than a minute. If she hadn't I was thinking of hitting up a stranger for their pee.
"Hi... can you pee on my dog? But please stand as far away as you can, or else she'll bite you."

I can't imagine a dog just sitting there and allowing another species to piss on its paws. Jellyfish suck.
Didn't your dog have a problem with its paws a few months ago?

Yes, actually... it turned out to be a hot spot and it went away, ONLY because I watched her 24/7 and yelled at her when she licked. Thank God it's gone... The sound of licking makes me want to kill myself.

Thank you. She seems fine now... when it first happened she was shaking a lot like she was scared and she kept looking at her paws and lifting them up, and they were really red. Poor baby.
She just drank 3 FULL bowls of water in a row though. She ate a lot of salt water... in some ways she's really smart but there are times when she's dumb as a rock.

When she barks and bites at people (well, it only happened once and the girl LITERALLY asked for it) it's not as cute.

What is the phenomenon of dogs & biting at waves? My dog, Cabo, used to do that & I just didn't understand it, although I was thoroughly entertained by it. Ths first time she did it though, she caught us off guard...she was just walking along the beach with me & my ex & suddenly after walking calmly for about 100 yards, she went NUTS out of nowhere. Between the body language & the sound of her jaw snapping shut repeated as she chased the waves & they disappeared, my ex & I were rolling in the sand laughing our asses off & I could barely hold onto her leash. Funny shit.
Luckily she got over it pretty quickly... less than a minute. If she hadn't I was thinking of hitting up a stranger for their pee.
"Hi... can you pee on my dog? But please stand as far away as you can, or else she'll bite you."
Potentially one of the funniest/oddest conversations of all time...but imagine being the person asked to perform this task?
Glad your pooch is OK.

Glad to know someone else's dog is crazy like mine. Stasha also loves when it snows... she runs around my backyard with her mouth open scooping up snow as she goes and just eats it. She also looooooves when I throw her a snowball... she "catches" it in her mouth and it immediately disappears. Oh... and when I shovel and she's out with me she stands behind me trying to catch all the snow as I shovel it. I have to be really careful not to shovel her in her face. I HAVE to get this all on video someday.
Does your drink a lot of water? Stasha drinks a LOT... more than any dog I ever knew. I think that's why she's obsessed with biting all these watery things.

I said in the original post that we go to Sandy Hook... dogs are allowed on the bay side all year around!!
We will probably just stick to the parks now anyway. Stasha was so distracted and anxious and she couldn't get comfortable. I think the beach is best enjoyed by myself or with my beach friends.

Haha... oh ok.
I think they're mosquito bites actually. I didn't see one mosquito, though I did see the flies and I felt them biting me. But I'm itching today somethin' fierce!!! And the bumps certainly look like mosquito bites. Like I said we were at the bayside and there are some tide pools there, so maybe some mosquitoes are breeding in the standing water. I'll just bring some off with me next time I go... Lookout for my next thread: Fuckin' Skeeters!!!

The US government has warned that enormous swarms of killer jellyfish - some the size of fridges and weighing up to a quarter of a ton - are ravaging the world's oceans. Particularly aggressive specimens are said to be capable of causing serious damage to ships, and have even managed to knacker nuclear power plants. (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/12/15/jellyfish_gone_wild/)
A quarter of a ton?!
Shit.
Researchers reported on Friday that huge swarms of stinging jellyfish and similar slimy animals are ruining beaches in Hawaii, the Gulf of Mexico, the Mediterranean, Australia and elsewhere. (http://www.redorbit.com/news/science/1610566/jellyfish_taking_over_tourist_spots/index.html)

It’s official: the only thing certain in this world is taxes. That’s because death, for a tiny sea creature, is not inevitable. Turritopsis nutricul, a jellyfish-like hydrazoan, is the only animal known to be potentially immortal.
Once it reaches sexual maturity, Turritopsis looks like a tiny, transparent, many-tentacled parachute (only about 5mm in diameter) that floats freely in warm ocean waters. But when times get tough, Turritopsis can turn into a blob, anchor itself to a surface, and undergo a sort of reverse methamorphosis back to its youthful form as a stalk-like polyp. That’s like a butterfly turning back into a caterpillar.

This thread gives me the heebie jeebies. I like to accompany my father at least once a year when he decides to take the boat out and go fishing. We'll find a nice spot and go for a swim. One year, somewhere off the south shore I found myself surrounded by hundreds of jelly fish. They were EVERYWHERE and seemed to appear out of nowhere. Aaahhhhhggghhhh!!! I'll take the north shore now, much cleaner.

Japanese fishing industry stung by plague of giant jellyfish (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/asia/article6721081.ece)
They poison fish, sting humans and even attack nuclear power stations. They are 6ft wide, up to 440lb in weight, and they are pink, slimy and repellent. They sound like rubber monsters from a Godzilla film, but they are Echizen kurage, or Nomura’s jellyfish, an authentic horror of the deep about to launch its latest assault on Japan.
Attack nuclear power stations?
We're doomed.

I just spent a week down the shore and the water was really warm - around 78 degrees - which was awesome. However, I noticed something that usually bothered me about the Jersey waters in August: Jellyfish, or rather, the lack thereof.
I didn't see ONE.
I'm not complaining, but I thought it was very odd, considering they love that warm water.
