I don't really enjoy one type of music. I like Tool and Slipknot and System of a Down, but on the other hand, I like Wu-Tang and Nas and Big L. I listen to Al Green, but also Tom Waits. I ask, cause I was at a bar the other night, with some friends, and we were fucking with the jukebox. I put on "Across 110th Street" by Bobby Womack, and this dude in all this G-Unit attire was playing pool next to use, and gave a disgusted look. I was already popped, so I was like "How do you not like this song, man"? And he said "I like rap music".
It's like, he came in his lil' gangster attire, looking the part, like a kid playing fucking dress-up. And now, he can't like any other type of music?
Is that normal, to just be a fan of one genre of music?

For the most part, I think people like that are posers who just want of "fit in", and have no imagination or opinions of their own.
It's most common with clique-like personalities, and especially common with people who act like they 'live' Rap, Hardcore, or Metal.
(Author's Note: please don't rip me an new asshole if you're a fan of Rap, Hardcore, and Metal, and you 'live' the lifestyle, and like other stuff as well...it's not a universal principal, and this opinion is just based on my experience.)
In reality, though, most people transcend genres in their tastes, at least at a superficial level (they'll listen to all the different hits of all the different generes).
Me, I have very broad music tastes, but I try and dig deep for some hidden gems. Yet, I don't fancy myself a music snob. Not really sure how I'd exactly describe how I listen, but I transcend a lot of different genres.

It reminds me a lot of the "hippie kids" I went to high school with. They were all super rich, but they listened to Phish and shit. So, none of them would wash there clothes or there hair, and they'd wear like, one pair of jeans. Never fucking made sense to me. It's like, you can get more clothes and bathe yourselves, why fucking play dress up cause you like a band??

most people don't stretch far beyond their comfort area, i realized this when i was 12.....
most people get into one form of music in their teen years, and they dialed in till they die...its sad.

I always say I like 'good' music. So it allows me to have Sepultura, Johnny Cash, The Band, and The New York Dolls CDs at my work right now. It seems like the exception and not the norm these days, though.

My theory, and this is legit something I've thought alot about, is that people dont really like stuff (especially music) because it has any objective value. You choose your interests because they affirm your self image. The G unit guy needs to project that self image more than someone else, so he's close minded even though he's ironically shitting on the music that laid the groundwork for rap.

My mother has a great ear for music, has really great taste, and played music all the time when we were growing up. She also made us take piano lessons for over 10 years. It's made me appreciate music in general, ALL kinds of music, hearing it with my body and soul, not just with my ears.
I would say that people who listen to one kind of music are just not that into "music", and just haven't been exposed to much music.
