A friend's sister gave her a Dell computer that an old roommate left behind. She can't do shit on it, because it needs the Admin password. I found one free utility HERE (http://www.loginrecovery.com/) (Windows XP Login Recovery) that looks like it might do the job, but I'm not sure if she has a floppy drive, and I doubt her ability to use the CD mirror.

Does anyone know of any free tools she can use? Of course, the best thing would be to reinstall Windows, but she doesn't have the recovery disc.

OK I feel bad for that last post, so I sought out another thread where someone suggested Hiren's BootCD (http://www.hiren.info/pages/bootcd). You'd want one of the "Password Tools" programs included

only problem is you'd have to find a torrent or something of it, because they dont offer a download

That probably won't work. She has dial up, and I'm pretty sure she'd have no idea how to use a torrent.

Not to be mean or anything, but if she can't do things like download, burn cd (my suggestion notwithstanding) or run a recovery tool, she either needs to a) find someone who can or b) she is SOL. It is not a simple task to do

She can run a recovery disc. She just doesn't have one. She's never had the need to burn a CD.

Is there any way to get her a recovery disk? Maybe she has a friend, or you could send her one? Something like that....... a complete re-install sounds like the best/easiest idea, especially since there is no data that needs to be saved

Does anyone know if Dell is willing to give out recovery discs? I've only ever owned one computer that I didn't build, and that was an HP. I have no idea how those companies deal with that kind of stuff.

I think your best bet is to format the drive and start over. You don't know what the roommate left behind on there, and you want to nuke it for a clean start.

Try checking Ebay for the Dell Recovery CD's - if not, maybe someone here can loan you one?

Has she tried any of the common Admin passwords (like password or drowssap), or did she just see that it is password protected and quit?

And I am not being a smartalec; if she isn't very tech savvy she might not have thought of trying.

***Also, what version of XP is the system, Home or Pro?

***Another question; what model Dell system is it and does it have a recovery partition? If the partition is there she won't need a disk, although everything will be reformatted and loaded to factory specs.
