so, we've made it halfway through the year. What's the best movie so far this year?
Ronnie B said the best movie of the year was a small movie that's only made like $6mil so far, but never said the name. Anyone know what movie he was talking about?
My favorite movie that came out this year would have to be The Wackness. I think its premiering this weekend in NY and LA and then going into wide release.
I keep seeing everyone loving Wall-E, and I cannot understand an animated movie being as good as I keep seeing, so I need to check that out.
What movie is your favorite?

I think it'll be Wall-E, TDK, Soderbergh's Che Guevara films, Burn After Reading or Choke.
All in all, this is a shitty year for good movies.

Yeah, that's the one. It was a great movie.

The Visitor.
Awesome, thanks. I just moved next to a "indie" cinema and have been looking for a good movie to go check out there, and this one happens to be playing. Hooray movie!

It's far and away the Visitor. A great little flick that was.

Didn't The Visitor come out last year?
Cool little film either way. By the same filmmaker that made The Station Agent for anyone that enjoyed that.

Yup, comes out September 26th. I'm psyched as hell for it even though I heard mixed reviews from the festival circuits. I think they reshot a new ending though since.

I saw Choke at the BAM Sundance Festival. It was pretty good but not the best of 2008.

Wow, just realized I haven't been in a theater since '07. Gay Firemen Are Everywhere with Adam Sandler.

I also didn't even realize that the big fat kid from the Nickelodeon show "Drake and Josh" became so damn thin. I kept going, "I know this kid". Then i was watching my nephew and he turned the show on and BANG, there he was. I just couldn't believe how much weight he lost.

My top three so far are Redbelt, In Bruges and Speed Racer. I was really surprised that SR flopped and got critically panned as badly as it did because I thought it was unlike anything I'd ever seen before visually and it employed some really interesting narrative techniques with the editing for a movie aimed at younger audiences. It's maybe possible that people out there still feel like they have an ax to grind with the Wachowski brothers because they're still sour over the Matrix sequels so they went into this with some hostility baggage. I honestly didn't even mind that it was too long and heavy on plot because I had such a good time looking at it. Somehow they were able to make a film enveloped in cgi that miraculously didn't feel like a video game.

I'm calling it right now, Speed Racer will go on to become a cult mainstay primarily with kids and cinematically inclined drug users. It's going to look sensational on blu ray.

My goodness gracious Wall-E was amazing. Such a strong movie for an animated 'kids' movie. Very little dialog with a moral plot about consumerism!
Very ballsy but its a great film and great looking, much more than a kids movie.
