I hope the Rays hold on...so sick of the Yanks. and even more so, the Sox in that division. Time for a little new blood.

This thread is going to be worse than the 2007 St. Loius Cardinals Discussion.
Just me and Cleophus James, talking about the greatest franchise EVER.
talking about the greatest franchise EVER.
Then why'd they just give up the lead to New York's JV squad?

There are 162 games. This is just one.
or
Because they want to practice coming back.
or
Blow me.

I dont wanna sound conspiratorial,
but is it possible the umps were in on the fix this series vs the Sox?
This game alone, there were alot of interesting calls,
including alotta balls called strikes that werent called the same for DEVIL rays.
I know it sounds like I'm whining, and maybe I am...
but man, the officials seemed against us this week.
And Tampa won by ONE run every night. wtf?
For the record, except for the whole beating us/leading us deal,
Ive been impressed with this team for awhile.

Option A is logical....Option B is what I hope for...Option C....hmmmm...

Well, they won by two on tuesday. I've actually been a fan for since 1998, but I agree I never really thought there was a need for thread here. There are some hardcore fans, but it's hard to develop a strong following with the shit we've dealt with since inception. Attendance was above league average the first year but fell off quickly after that. So there are us few lonely season ticket holders who make the trek all season, and its kind of gratyfying/frustrating to see the bandwagon getting fuller. Half of them were just Yankee/Redsox bandwagon fans who just switched alliances when it was convenient.

This is a landmark year for the Rays as far as their future viability goes, too.
The Braves are off TBS, which means that loosens Atlanta's stranglehold on the Northern/Central Florida market.
And the Rays marketing scheme, from everything I've read about the new ownership, is very kid and young adult oriented, and is working quite well in comparison to the past
They have a HUGE opportunity to use this year as building the foundation of a very young, hip (at least as hip as it gets with Tampa, which is probably better described as 'hayseed slick') fan base down there that could really put them on the map for years to come.

I love what the Ray are doing. Show the "big market" teams how to build a team without breaking the bank. And do it in Steinbrenner's backyard!
But as King Hippo mentioned, it is a long season.
Anyone know the status of a new field for the Rays?

I went over to a game at the Trop in mid may and on a Saturday night they probably had 10,000 at best, but I bet the town starts to embrace them more. It will be nice when they get the new stadium on the waterfront.

I don't know how many of the big market teams are willing to finish dead last to ensure a top pick for a decade straight to get to this position tho.

The Rays always have played the Soxs tuff and it all comes down to Sept.-Oct. the rest of the season is a warm up to the real fall baseball.
The Soxs,Rays and Yanks will be fighting it out come fall and i can't wait for those games.

I believe 2010 is when the new place will open.
I talked to a lady yesterday who works for the bank that originally financed Tropicana Field, and was working with the new park. Apparently the locals are hating the idea of the new park on the water. I've seen artist renditions, and that place looks like it'll be gorgeous.

And that call on Lugo at second that resulted in a double play was a good call. They should make it like that more often.

Agreed. You can clearly see in the replay that he intentionally touched the guys leg.
Very A-rod-ian.

That is a misconception. The only 1st round picks that have really panned out for them, as of right now, are B.J. Upton, and Delmon Young (only because he was flipped for Garza), and Evan Longoria. David Price may make a fourth later this year.
Having high picks is a part of the equation, but it's not close to the whole story. If you really go down their 25 man roster and look at how they got each guy, the Rays acquired a lot of them in what were probably considered at the time, throwaway trades.
Then there's deals like Zambrano for Kazmir, and Garza and Bartlett for Delmon Young were they just got the better of the other team.
And then they've signed guys that other teams have effectively given up on (Troy Percival, Gary Glover, Trever Miller, Carlos Pena, Cliff Floyd, Eric Hinske), and have hit on more of their LOW round draft picks than a lot of other teams.
The bottom line is that they really don't make mistakes...they get the better of almost every trade they make, and they must have excellent scouting, because they sign a lot of reclaimation projects that seem to pan out, and because of the low-round picks they hit on.
And they REALLY haven't made mistakes since Andrew Friedman took over at the end of '05.

plan was for the people to vote in nov 08 election on whether or not to build the new stadium , and if passed to be ready for 2012 opening day
there was lots of opposition to it and now the vote is being held off til 2010

I feel sorry for any true rays fans, although Ive never met one, I hear they exist.
A bunch of newcomers in that park last night; every shirt was bought that day, every cowbell too. Speaking of cowbells, it's cool to have a noisemaker that affects the opposing team's ability to call eachother off balls and all, but a real fan would know not to use it when your own team is trying to do the same. You could almost see it in the rays' faces; they liked playing better when the place was empty.

Just busting balls. I remember going to Lightning games there. Hell, I remember watching Lightning games at the Expo Hall when puddles would form on the ice before the puck dropped, and midway through the second period there would be a relatively thick layer of fog at ground level. My parents have had Rays season tickets since they went on sale in '97, and I have had them from '01 on, so this is exciting to me.

Not as much as you think.
Ronnie won't even talk about the Phils for fear of jinxing it (something I understand and support 100%). He's also starting to cut off callers who even try and mention them.
