My brother's future brother-in-law lives in Brazil and believes he can get a better deal on a laptop in the U.S., so he's tasked my brother with getting a laptop for him. He's told him he's willing to pay as much as $1000. He's not a gamer, and he likely won't be using it for anything outside of the ordinary uses (e-mail, internet, word processing, etc.). If you had $1000 to pay for a laptop to do the normal things laptops do, where would you go, and what would you pick up? If you wanted a great machine that would do all of the things he needs it to do, but wanted to spend less than $1000, what would you have to pay and what would you get? Thanks.

slickdeals.net has great deals on laptops. you have to be quick in buying. other than that, i say build your own.

Yeah, slickdeals. I bought my Dell laptop with a link from there for less than $700. And it was from Dell.com, not from some weird, random website.

Make sure you check the tariffs. Some countries charge so much, it would negate the deal.
