Ron has mentioned this show on the radio several times...and I reluctantly admit that I watch it. The kids are cute, except for "the evil one" Maddy.The Dad seems very cool and normal. But the Mom...Kate...is UN-bearable! She openly acknowledges that she doesnt consider others when in public and she seems to believe that she's some kind of supermom. My Irish Catholic Grandmother raised 8 kids, and not all at the same time, which I think is easier. And she did it without a horde of helpers or free vacations or a husband for the most part. I guess what Im saying is that I watch awful television and my Grandmother would kick Kates ass.

I've only seen a couple minutes of one episode, but from that and what my sister-in-law has told me. The mother is a real witch and controlling. Not to mention that they get a shit load of free stuff..ie...vacations, free hair cuts for the kids till their 6 yrs old. My Grandmother died in 05 but I still wouldnt count her out in this fight. And I did see the episode where they got "free" hairplugs. Even that seemed like it was at Kate's insistence. How many parents that truly experience the real stress of having any amount of children opt to have cosmetic hair surgery?

My wife and mother-in-law occasionally watch this show. It's one of those shows that raises a foul bile in my craw. I just don't get it. It's a show where people talk about the most mundane daily activities in horrible monotones. They talk about shit like going to the store, buying furniture, putting it together in the garage, then moving it into the house, and they present it as if it is interesting. They've done something really difficult here: created boring voyeurism.

I agree that Kate is a total control freak, but that's part of what I find hilarious about her. (In some ways, she reminds me of my own mother, who is a nurse also, and my grandmother, who raised 7 kids, one of whom is developmentally disabled, so I am sure there were times when it seemed like more than 7!)

Watching the show is total schadenfreude.

I completely get stressed out watching this show, wayyyy too many kids for me especially 6 at the same age. I am not a fan of Kate but I don't know how she is able to remain as calm as she does because I would seriously lose it A LOT quicker than she does. I do get extremely annoyed at the handouts and freebies they get but hey, I know I'd use them to if I got them. The critics aren't too kind to the first show (btw, they reportedly get $75,000 per episode - along with a house, vacations, and other goodies):

At one point in the show, Kate complained that her life was "just so hard" due to media attention and pressures on her marriage.

"Is it really, Kate?" sniped the Baltimore Sun's David Zurawik. "Tell that to a family in which the breadwinner has just lost her or his job, you silly, self-absorbed fool."

New Jersey's Star Ledger also calls out Kate for her hypocrisy over the paparazzi. In a voiceover on Monday's premiere, she says that she tells her kids to call the paparazzi "the P-people" because "I don't want them going to school being like, 'Well, the paparazzi is following us, like, that's so creepy.'"

Says the Star Ledger: "What's creepy is having your children followed around by a camera crew. Any camera crew. Period. It's exploitation, whatever cutesy name you want to give it."

Ken Tucker of Entertainment Weekly notes that Kate made it a point to say she was "alone" about six times on Monday's premiere. (At one point on the show, she complained that "Jon decided he needed a weekend off," so she had to organize the 5-year-old sextuplets' birthday party by herself.)

Says EW: "You just wanted to say, 'We get it! You feel you're the Wronged Woman! Aren't you savvy enough by now to know you're not winning us over?' This was especially true when she noted that 'all of a sudden, your kids are calling you your babysitter's name.' I could almost hear millions of viewers shouting, 'So stay home!'"

Sarah Kickler Kelber of The Baltimore Sun also takes aim at Jon -- who clearly did not want to be on the show -- for not opening up about his marital problems. On the show, he denies cheating on his wife but vaguely apologizes for his "actions."

"It would be so much clearer if they would just say their version of what happened," Kelber writes. "This is just more complicated than it needs to be. It's not like they aren't used to sharing the details of their lives, you know? We saw Jon's hair-transplant surgery as it happened, and Kate recovering from her tummy tuck, and the kids going through potty training. Most of that was probably too much information, but now we aren't quite getting enough."

What was most evident after Monday's premiere is that the tone on the TLC show has changed. The Philadelphia Enquirer even goes as far as to declare that the show is "adding up to disaster."

Zurawik of The Sun echoes that sentiment.

"For all the nasty and stupid reality shows I have seen over the years, I have to say this one did leave me feeling like I was looking in on something that I shouldn't be watching," he writes.

"What I saw was two people in over their heads, with one of them trying in her incredible arrogance to act like she knew what she was doing -- and an off-camera voice playing the melodrama of these lives for all it was worth," says Zurawik. "The kids mostly got lost in all of that."

thats what i thought at first, but then i noticed there is a time lapse. there would have been plenty of time to pour a little water into each of the kids' mouths before the show started. and even still, so what if they are drinking water. the interviewer is not going to complain that they were drinking water on air. they are kids and can get away with these things.

There is an episode where one little girl falls and bites through her lip- she was super psyched to go to the doctor, and all the other kids were upset that they didn't go to the doctor. So I believe the kids would act out to get a little extra one on one attention from their mom.

The thing that bugs me is this woman can do absolutely nothing right.
