View Full Version : Replacing the Factory Installed Sirius?

I may be getting a new car soon, and it comes with factory installed sirius. It has a fancy-schmancy integrated radio, so I ask this:
I've heard you can use the XM antenna to pick up sirius signals with a sirius receiver. Can this be done in reverse, with a Sirius antenna picking up XM?
My biggest concern is placement of a new antenna and I want to avoid a messy install of a lot of wires hanging around. If I can just reverse the dual/single input antenna conversion, I'll be good.

Toyota told me I couldn't do it, and I'd need to purchase a new head unit and antenna.
I ended up going w/ Honda so I could get XM/NAV/Stereo in one neat package w/ no wires.

Well, that's the company line from Toyota; if they have a deal in place with SIRI they aren't going to give you a way to get XM easily.
I sent an email to tech support at Myradiostore to see if I could get some answers. If I had a sirius antenna to experiment with, I could see what happens.
I'd also have to get into the innards of the new car to see what can be futzed around with.

According to MyRadioStore:
What I'd like to do is use the Sirius antenna that's already installed in the truck, disconnect the antenna to the Sirius receiver, and run the Vehicle Factory Single Lead Antenna to XM/Sirius Adapter to my MyFi. Is
this feasible?
If you are able to use the antenna adapters to make the connection then this is feasible. XM and Sirius antenna are interchangeable, but do function on slightly different frequencies. So when using the other
brands antenna you may experience some loss in signal strength.

I was looking at the Ford Edge and it has factory installed Sirius. I asked the salesman about switching to XM and he told me that it was easily done but they couldn't do it because of their deal with Sirius.

ripping me off, hoo hoo hoo.
TJ - I'm going to go look at one tonight and get an upclose look at the receiver. If it has the connection I think it has, I'll map out the way to do it right.
