Yeah, I love QUEEN, PRINCE, STEELY DAN, and a whole S-load of popular bands but, some of my all time fave bands are the ones that flew under the radar and never achieved mainstream success.

For my money, bands like JELLYFISH and DAN REED NETWORK and MR. REALITY deserved to become multiplat acts and should've been headlining arenas.

Please list your secret faves. I'll check 'em out.
I'm dying to hear some high quality stuff that I'm not yet familiar with.

The HOOTERS. They had a few hits in the mid-late 80's, but they should have been huge. They are really good musicians and have a unique sound.

The BADLEES are also a favorite of mine. They had one national hit ("Angeline") but they had so many songs that were so much better (IMO). I think their biggest problem was timing, location (South Central PA), and lousy management.

Rising Sons could have been big if they had decided to make more than one (incredible) album. Doug Sahm in any of his various bands. Allgood was great, but they never much cared about promotion. I still think Lambchop should be bigger than they are, but I realize they could never get any airplay on anything other than college radio, so I'll leave it alone.

Agreed.

And, as much as I hate to admit it, The Hooters were a good band. I saw them open for Squeeze in 1985 at Nassau Coliseum and bought their tape Nervous Night. Pretty good album.

Eric Bazilian went on to write "One of Us" for Joan Osborne's album Relish. She should have made it big too.

OH! And the Del Fuegos.

EDIT: Remember Beat So Lonely by Charlie Sexton? He was "marketed" as the next big thing. Note I used the term "marketed." They tried to sell him as the James Dean of 80s music.

I think ATDI was just about as big as they wanted to be, and had the careers they wanted with the material they were playing.

Them getting a radio hit didn't really make alot of sense, so them packing it in right after sortof did.

Discount should really have been bigger. They made a few albums and toured, but as far as punk bands go they really should have alot more name recognition.

Plow United is a band from West Chester Pa who also really could've hit nationally if they were on a label like Jade Tree, or Fat.

Avail isn't unsuccesful but has the stuff to go next level as far as punk bands.

Screeching Weasel was probably as big as a band like them could be, but I think there needs to be alot more talk about how influential they were. So they should sortof be getting huge in retrospect now.

You may be right, and the fact that The Mars Volta and Sparta are very interesting and relatively succesful bands unto themselves may speak to that, but I don't think ATDI ever finished their arc. From their first two albums into Relationship of Command I was amazed at their evolution. Relationship of Command is one of the better pillar to post, 'take it as a whole' albums I have ever listened to. I just thought there was more there to be mined.

It depends on what you mean by huge.

A band like the Smashing Pumpkins was fairly big, but they always get shafted when people talk about 90's grunge and rock, yet, if you stack them musically against Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden...they're much more musically unique than any of those three.

In that sense, they should at least have the heat that Pearl Jam still has today, but they don't have anywhere near it.

Couple of things:

-Maybe if they stayed together and continued to put out albums and tour, they would have.

-Smashing Pumpkins could never touch Pearl Jam as far as a live show.

I saw SP twice and Zwan once, and they just weren't very good live. Pearl Jam stayed relevent so much longer than the rest based on their touring. Even when they were putting out their shitty records they could still sell out arenas.

I can't really argue with any of that, although I did see Zwan and the new SP lineup live, and I thought they were actually pretty good, especially in comparison to the first time around.

The only thing I will add, as far as them getting shafted in a lot of the 90s retrospectives, is that the Early 90s was about Seattle...Cobain, Vedder, and Cornell were all there...the Pumpkins were Chicago, and they weren't entirely grunge (although, I think if you really look at it, neither was Pearl Jam from a music standpoint).

So I think being in Chicago hurts them when people look back at that period.

He's pretty much the only name mentioned I agree with so far.

Musical nazi as Snoogans says I am, most of the bands I listen to weren't ever or aren't really big or huge, but for pretty much all of them it makes sense why they weren't. All of them, and pretty much everyone mentioned here, aren't or weren't ever really aiming big and broad with their music. It's hard to explain, but not being big seems "natural" for bands like that. Crenshaw, on the other hand, makes incredibly catchy, broad music. It's basically tailor-made for massive radio play and getting stuck in people's heads the instant they hear it. That's the kind of stuff that sticks out for me in expecting a band to be "huge."

I'm going to say The Verve. Urban Hymns was a really strong album and got some decent airplay. Ultimately though the copyright issue with the sample from that orchestral version of the Stone's "The Last Time" was the catalyst that broke the band up. I've heard they reformed so maybe they will be as big as I thought they'd be. I have 3 of their albums (A Storm in Heaven and A Northern Soul in addition to Urban Hymns) and all 3 are great.

I have to agree with Devo. A bit ahead of their time IMHO.

A local band from Jersey, The Semibeings, have always been a favorite of mine. I worked for them for a few years. They played all acoustic guitars, but with the energy of a moderately heavy alternative band. They (needless to say) broke a LOT of strings, which is where I came in. I wish they would have gone further than they did.

The Hooters were a good band as well. Just a fun rock band, but they should've gone further as well. I only remember a couple songs now, but I remember they didn't suck.

I was also a big Veruca Salt fan.

even before shannon hoon's death, they were not recognized for their brilliance.

pick up the album Nico, and you'll see what i mean.

They, like Faith No More, were one of those bands that all the "ham & eggers" only remember for the one song, when the rest of their work was absolutely fantastic.

There was some music I enjoyed by a few groups that I don't think would be huge in a Metallica/Pearl Jam/Nirvana kind but that I had hoped would be around longer.

Tonic and Toad The Wet Sprockett are 2 that come to mind.

They both had a good, clean sound that I think was much better than the pop music it was associated with.

I caught them in 1998 at the old NJ Tradewinds in Sea Bright - (it's now condos which sucks - that was the best Shore club of all time)

I went to get tix and asked how much - the said "free". That's fucking depressing. Great show. I still listen to that album. My favorite part of that album is if you let the last track play out and forget that the CD's on... there's an unlisted track that's pretty cool about 6:30later. I like it anyway.

One band that might have been huge but was not...

I don't know too much from them of late but a few years ago they had a big single with Nobody and the album is very cool. Rap/Metal/Reggae Heavy heavy tuned down guitars with a lot of vertical beat and the vocalist is from the islands - it looks like an average heavy college band went on vacation and picked him up.

They just called it quits after 20 years. They got big in the 90's on college radio, but I always loved their sound. I'm glad I got to see them a handful of times.

Big Ass Truck was a band from the 90's that played around the Memphis area. They loved to meld funk and a bit of jazz and a bit of scratching and a bit of sampling. They were one of the greatest bands you've never heard, and I've never heard anything else like them.

They aren't together any more, but anything you can download or buy from these guys is worth a listen. Their self-titled first album is very very good, then only gets better from there. "Sweetness" is one of my favorites.

King's X
HELL YES!
One of the under-appreciated, genius, little known bands that unfortunately fell through the cracks.
Just saw them in July. Dug's voice was better than ever.

Dug wrote a long blog about their (lack of) success.
He's bitter... and rightfully so.

"I wish I could set down and answer all the questions, and speculations. I will try to make light of some of the things said and suggested. You guys are wonderful so please dont take anything I say as negative or bitching... There's no anger here... just love.

"Here goes... We never fit in; no matter what we do, we can't get the masses on board, and we've done everything there is. I know you all have suggestions of what we could do do get more successful, but we have done everything there is to do! Or at least inquired about it all... We just can't get the folks on board. Woodstock '94 we played for 300 thousand people, and the next week on SoundScan we sold about 200 CDs. Then the week later nothing to comment on.... The rest of the bands on the bill — JACKYL, SHERYL CROW, LIVE, CANDLEBOX, etc. — sold millions!!! We got the best slot of the day, and USA Today, Howard Stern, MTV said we were the best band that day! We sold nothing... and it changed my life. I cut my hair and almost gave up! Plus I was going through midlife crisis. I started getting panic attacks and got blinded by my self-hate. 'Ear Candy' was the result.

"Management? We have had people check us out and they say were doing a better job by ourselves than they could… after they see what we have to go through to get a gig and keep the boat afloat. Others say we're perceived as an old band and they feel they can't help us.

"Record companies? We tried to give Atlantic a done CD with nothing to do but throw it out there. They passed, saying they are only interested in new young bands. ALL other companies rejected us except Metal Blade and InsideOut. Thank the gods for that...

"Booking agent? They say they can't get many promoters to bring us; they all think they will lose money...

"DEEP PURPLE? were trying to get on that tour, and anyother oportunity we can... but we have to pay to play, it's all political… That's the way all bands are treated now, they all pay, Ozzfest... The record companies pay to get all the bands on the tour. We don't have the $$. We opened for many bands in the past to no avail. A few new converts, but not enough...

"Paul Shaffer [of the 'Late Show with David Letterman'] plays 'Born to be Loved' all the time... but to get to play live on the 'Letterman' show? Practically impossible.

"I wish you all could understand how impossible the situation is these days for many bands. It sucks! The rejection to KING'S X is overwhelming in the music marketplace. You can imagine how it makes us feel.

"Christian music scene?? Yeah, we could have been maybe the biggest band in Christian music, but we're not hypocrites, and when the Christians find out that we drink, smoke weed and I am gay, they would turn on us anyway, so why go there? That just hurts. Besides that, they rejected us anyway after they learned who we were. They're human, they hide it. We're not like that, we're too honest. That's why I am down on Christian music. In the name of truth they live lies. That's never been me, or KING'S X. It's one of our biggest faults. The Christian music scene was a dead end for us no matter what had happened in our career. I am agnostic now anyway. We just couldn't justify being a Christian band. It just wasn't the truth. I was raised Christian and have seen the Christian music scene first-hand. I can't be a part of it and I couldn't back then either... and we're still called a Christian band to this day. It wasn't kosher back then either. I remember so many people saying that they couldnt get their friends to listen to KING'S X 'cause we were Christian, even though STRYPER were successful. Now it's accepted being a Christian band, but we're not one of those bands. What's done is done and it's the past...

"Downhill career? 'Manic Moonlight' was a good CD; I don't care what anyone says... I put my heart in that CD and wrote some songs that I am proud of. There was some wasted space on it, but isn't that the way most CDs are? We really did our best with what we had and who we were at the time. This band started out downhill, now we're in a hole. We couldn't get the $ for a producer for years, so we did it ourselves; at least we tried. Then we paid for Michael Wagener out of our own pockets, and finished the CD paying for it ourselves. We are really trying to do the right things, but all we get are walls. There's only so much we can do without money, record company support and attendance. We have maybe sold a million CDs combined from day one! That's not many in the real world. And Atlantic put millions into promoting us. More than most we have had the oportunity for exposure and we got it.

"I know some of you think there's things we should be doing, but trust me, we have tried or checked out all the possibities, it's just not as easy as you may think. We need all-ages shows, and it's almost impossible to get them. That's just fact. It sucks playing at such late times when people have to go to work or drive hours to attend. We always ask for early shows and all ages, it just dosent happen. Bands that are successful without airplay or much promotion? It's a mystery. We're doing what they did and here we are. We're going home from this tour broke. I get no $ when I am off tour, I have to fend for myself. That's life, I guess. Same as everyone else, I wish it wasn't so...

"25 years of doing this with KING'S X... When in the early days before the record deal, we couldn't get good attendance doing covers when the other bands we competed with packed the clubs... It's always been this way, we just don't appeal to the masses. Maybe if we had about 10 million to promote us??? But there's no guarantee. We're precieved as an old band in the marketplace that is well respected but not a moneymaker. Bands try to take us out with them but their management always reject us. We may not tour for a while because of all of this...we can't.

"We have made mistakes, for sure, in our career, but we have realy tried to do the right things. We're not the same people as we were when we started this band, and we always try to do our best and make the best music we can. Sometimes it didn't seem like it was the best effort at the time, but if you were there, you would understand.

"We are so thankful for the support from the faithful. We wouldn't be here if it wasnt for all of you people. The band is really down these days, frustrated, and out of money and ideas that will work. We're not young upcoming wide-eyed kids anymore, and this music biz is obsessed with youth. The whole U.S. is this way, just look around.

"It's not over untill the fat lady sings, they say... Well, she's at the mic…

"I have had a wonderful adventure being in this band and being me. I have been blessed more than most. I take nothing for granted. We could go on and on about what we should do and what we haven't, but at the end of the day, we have done the best that we could with what is before us.

"We're not done, we're not breaking up… We're still hoping to be the biggest band in the world, and I have many more songs in my head and on demos to throw out there for you guys… good or bad, you can decide. I will make music as long as I can breathe.

"I have questioned my whole life and this band's place in the world. It's still a mystery to me. This band I have invested 25 years of my life to... and I think about my place in this more than anyone could possibly know or understand... and still don't know why no one realy gives a feck on a major scale. And people wonder why I have low self-esteem. I am one of the biggest losers that there is, and I don't know why. No one in KING'S X knows why it hasn't happened for us... but I will keep doing what I do because I know nothing else and I love making music.

"Thanks for letting me ramble. Thanks for hearing me out. And like I said before, without you guys I probably wouldn't be alive. Thanks for saving my life. I love you all. Keep the faith. It's not taken for granted."

I'm going next week and they just released a snappy new tune...

my first choice has to be Blind Melon....they got typecast by that shitty bee video, but there library (limited as it may be) was tremendous.

Then, i'd go with The Porcupine Tree - some real good shit right there.

And, of course, muledose .....i mean, listen to the end of "Pieces"....huge. myspace.com/muledose

I think they did it to themselves by dropping the horrible sloppy dump of an album that was Float Away with the Friday Night Gods. They had some good little momentum going, at least to become like a "buzz band," and then that abomination came out and nearly destroyed them. Everything they've done since just seems like pennance.

Jethro Tull they are probably thought of as popular, But I believe Ian Anderson is a genius who doesn't get the full credit he deserves.

I always thought Big Star sounded like the best band of the 70's and I never heard of them until a year ago.

A lot of under appreciated bands that I would list are still putting out music so I can't say the definitely won't get big. Although, I would never listen to anything that would have a chance on modern rock radio and very few who actually sell albums.

The Flat Duo Jets.

Totally agree with this one. They were AMAZING live. I first saw them on a documentary called "Athens, GA" that highlighted a bunch of bands that came out of Georgia, like the B52's, REM and the Flat Duo Jets. After I saw them in the movie I knew I had to see them live and they finally played the 9:30 club in DC.

Also on my list:
Kix
Iggy Pop
John Hiatt
All have some fame just not as much as similar, and much worse bands.

Excellent call. They heavily influenced Led Zeppelin. Zep actually covered "Fresh Garbage" in the earliest live shows. And check out Spirit's song "Taurus". See if this sounds like another famous song (won't allow embedding -- sorry) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogTFdlbup24)

Jellyfish

Absolutely, 100%, without question: JELLYFISH.
This is a band that should've/could've been twice as big as ELO and half as big as Queen.

Jellyfish is thee reason I created this thread.
