So I was watching T:2 tonight and...

...I was too young to know about marketing and how trailers etc. worked when this film came out, so my question is looking back on it, did people know he was going to be a good guy in this film, or was it totally mind blowingly awesome when it turned out he was, cause watching it now as an adult and having seen the first one, I imagine the experience of not knowing Arnie was actually a good guy would have made this film even more amazing than it already is.

The scene in that alleyway behind the arcade when both T1000 and the original Terminator are trying to get to John would make me think no. Otherwise that would be really spoiled.

By looking at the trailers, you know within the first minute, the Terminator was a good guy. It was a bit of a letdown for a minute or two, but it was easy to get into the character after the initial revealing.

On the commentary track for T2 I think Cameron mentions his intent to keep who is the bad guy ambigious but had to bow to the studio for marketing reasons plus pre release publicity. Watching th actual film Cameron does try to keep the viewer guessing untill the scene in the mall hallway

Great scene, but the one that really gave me chills was when the Terminator comes out of the elevator and Sarah Connor falls down screaming "NOOO!!!" I thought that would have been a great scene to first reveal he was a good Terminator.
