Its amazing how one little thing that sucks can turn into a book, a movie, a song, a tv show, and so on. What has spawned the most starting with the least? I've never seen the play but whenever I hear a commercial for Mama Mia I'm amazed that an Abba song led to a play and a movie. What other shit has produced large successful shit trees?

Think about it. It goes way beyond just "boy bands". Once this guy did what he did, almost ALL music ended up being created and marketed to 13 year old girls.

This one's easy. The true birth of reality TV.

But he's not even the one who originated the idea ... you have Maurice Starr, who gave us New Edition and NKOTB ... whoever's responsible for Tiffany ... and whoever's responsible for signing Debbie Gibson (although she actually wrote her own stuff, so maybe it's not as bad.)

PLUS, before that you had ... ABBA.

And ABBA can be fun in an ironic sort of a way ... haven't any of you seen Muriel's Wedding??? HILARIOUS. And ABBA music is just as much of a character as the leads (Rachel Griffiths and Toni Collette).

And Mamma Mia! is only one of the string of "jukebox musicals" that have plagued Broadway in the last few years ... they're cheaper than mounting real musicals and usually don't involve much original thought. Look at Movin' Out (which I actually saw and enjoyed, but it's more of a ballet with a band than anything else) ... or Good Vibrations ... or The Times They Are A-Changin' ... or Imagine ...

You kind of have a built-in audience from the fans of the music, but if it's done badly, the musical folds.

The one thing that troubles me lately is the string of films-turned-shows-turned-films (The Producers ... which I loved ... Hairspray ... I've not seen the stage version, but I've seen John Waters' original with Ricki Lake ... Legally Blonde ... which was a cute movie, but after seeing the "showstopper" number from the show, I think it's a steaming pile of horseshit ... Young Frankenstein .... I loved the film, but, again, its "showstopper" number is pretty freaking lame ... and now Cry Baby ...)

Ugh.

I thought about that, but once Pearlman hit with his bands, it became almost impossible for anything else to get play. The older ones were big hits, but there was still other music getting played on the radio and TV.

And people wonder why I don't listen to pop music when it's current but wait for the 'Weird Al' polka version. *sigh*

That kind of goes without saying. I mean, not only is it an HBO series that's running in sanitized syndication on TBS, but it's also a movie AND a NYC tour!

But it all started with the book, which was a collection of Candace Bushnell's newspaper columns or something ... and the book stunk too. I can see it as entertainment or even social commentary, but it's really lame.

I know, I really just read my news, but I want traffic and weather and what else am I going to have on when I'm drying off from the shower. But atleast the really shitty news stories were local interest pieces. Now it's shit like 'and heres a video of a happy walrus'

American Idol.

The show itself is just fine. It's a talent show. No probs there. I loved the first season just like the rest of the earths population.
What I loathe is how many crapular shows it gave birth to. The format... the judges... the snippy British judge... the crowd that ALWAYS boooooos whenever a criticism is given. The stupid "call me" hand gestures that every contestant makes. The stretched out finale episodes. The recap episodes. The product placement. The disney-on-ice level tours. etc etc etc.

Idol really has affected TV for the worse. And that ain't easy.
