View Full Version : Nerd? Geek? Dork? What do these mean, and which one are you?

Sheepy's comment about geek vs. nerd during the Brian K. Vaughn interview on Thursday made me think about what the words nerd, geek, and dork mean.
To me, nerd has always been associated with someone who exhibits great intelligence in one particular field. For example, someone who is really good at chemistry is a chem nerd.
A geek, on the other hand, has intelligence in one field, but that knowledge is usually about something trivial. So you have sports geeks, TV geeks, comic book geeks. I consider myself a geek.
A dork is basically someone who is an oddity amongst even geeks and nerds. They usually have an interest in the most odd things, like insect collecting. I think that dorks are usually an offshoot of dork or nerd.

I don't really agree with you... I see it like this: A nerd has hope of interacting normally in society, as does the geek, whereas the dork is pretty much hopeless socially. Nerd might be someone that is proficient in one area or another, or really interested in that area, whereas a geek actually earns money for it, or does something constructive with it, or allows it to consume their entire life. A dork earns nothing from said proficient knowledge and isn't necessarily respected for it either.

I think the Nerd would have the higher overall intelligence of the three, and will probably do quite well financially. He's not concerned about his appearance and really couldn't care less what people think about him, but he's not so bad that he can't get a date. He's not completely inept socially either. I think Steve Jobs would have been considered a nerd when he got started, but not necessarily a geek.
I think the geek is amazingly proficient in one particular field (usually not one that will make him any money, like 'film geek' or 'sports geek'), but lacks the overall intelligence of the nerd. He's probably a bit more socially deficient, mainly because he's so wrapped up in his main interest, but he's not a complete loss. The geek should be able to find a geekette that shares his common passion.
The dork is a complete disaster. Stupid, goofy, ugly and broke. He's got absolutely nothing going for him and will probably end up in a clock tower somewhere with a high-powered rifle or, even worse, living with, and taking care of his mom for the rest of her life.

I agree that the geek is operating with a higher level of intelligence, but it comes so naturally to them they barely even realize it, which leads to the social deficiency. They're kind of in their own little world.

I think what we really need to ponder is what classifies a person as a dweeb.

Nerds and Geeks are what "Hipsters" really wish they were. They like out of the mainstream stuff, they don't care if their clothes are in style, they may not be very well groomed. Nerds and Geeks do it because they generally don't care what other think or their style. Hipsters do it to be part of a scene.

Big difference is that "Hipsters" try really hard to look like they don't try at all.

nerds are really smart and lack social graces, like the revenge of tne nerds guys
geeks are people who have at least one thing they have a hyper-interest in and know way too much about like star trek fans or comic book guys, but you can be a geek about anything. but the first post was right, its often about something thought by most to be trivial.
for dork you can go with the original definition of someone who is just awkward, (like nerd without the smart part) but there is also the offshoot of the dork which is the lovable goof. someone who does things generally thought to be socially odd, but it comes off as endearing.
then there is doofus which i think ties in closely to the dork.
spaz's are uncoordinated and usualy nerdy and/or dorky w/o the endearing part
a dweeb is a a small in stature and usually thin dorky doofusy nerdy geek.

Worse than hipsters are scenesters, people who have a perceived ranking in a fake social network based on the things they own, way they looks, and experiences they've had- or things that generate 'scene points'
But I always thought this
Nerds are myopically smart, so where they're smart distracts them from everything else.
Geeks are are very enthusiastic about something, probably something leisure based, and they exhibit it.
Dorks are socially retarded.

I think some of those nerds from Revenge of the Nerds were dorks. At least this scene makes them all look pretty dorky...

(this is what happens when I'm not subscribed to a thread I made. I lose track of it!)
I think you're kinda with me, LaBoob (great name, BTW). Geeks and Nerds have the best chance of surviving life with "normal" people, while dorks are so far removed from what people consider normal that they're ostracized.
Hipsters are really corny, but the one advantage they have over me is that they usually dress better. That is, until the next fad comes around and they're no longer hip. I think it's better to never be hip, than to lose your hipness.

I agree... it's better to just not even try than to try and try and try and get NOWHERE. At least where fashion is concerned. Anyway, the most enviable fashion is the one pulled off by a person who is NOT trying.

They become dorky adults. It's gotta be a small percentage who go psychotic.
