I made roast bone marrow (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/31/dining/311mrex.html)the other night for the first time, it was one of the most delicious things I have ever eaten in my life.

 I don't know if I could eat that. I give marrow bones from the butcher to my dog and she LOVES them even just frozen, but I've always thought they looked completely unappetizing.

That sounds like something I'd like to try... is there something you could compare the taste to?

How do you cut the bones in half? I guess the butcher?

Seriously? I'd kill a homeless man for something that tasted like that.

Ah, who am I kidding? I'm just looking for excuses at this point.

defenitely the butcher, I brought the bones home uncut and tried to cut them with a hacksaw...bad idea, bits of flesh everywhere and a sore arm.

i can absolutely see that, where are you originally from, surely not Seattle?
I grew up in AK, I knew several Native students in elementary school and one of my memories was eating Whale blubber ( I can't remember but I think it was Beluga) and absolutely loving it.

I'm originally from Kiana, AK. It's a small village up near Kotzebue. Last summer my nephew made his first trip up to AK from Minnesota, he tried some beluga muktuk. There really isn't any taste to it, it's just chewy.

Did the butcher charge you for the bones? Did he think it odd asking for the bones?

A friend from the South persuaded me to try some grits over the weekend. They were rubbish!

I find marrow bones at the lower end supermarkets--particularly ethinc ones. Typically you can get 3 or 4 large bones for under $2.

How were they cooked? If they were instant then they probably were crap? Slow cooked in milk and with butter on top is the way to go. They are an acquired taste for a northerner.

That roast bone marrow recipe is adapted from a Fergus Henderson recipe, who has to be the most offal chef in the world.

Think Scrapple, only worse. Its popular amongst the Irish and Dutch communities in Cincinnati.

There's a French provincial restaurant near my house named Harvest that serves roasted veal marrow bones with toast points as an appetizer (usually in the fall/winter)...Nice!

I hope you enjoyed your bone marrow. Little Johnny is dead. You ate his match!
