Lap Top WIFI question

Got a Dell inspiron 1525 lap top for fathers day. I want to know the best way to set up for wifi when I'm on the road. Verizon is my wireless phone provider, Optimun handles the service @ home. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated. I would only use the lap top to surf the net in between runs in NYC. I am not very computer literate, and this gift will help me catch up to the rest of the world. (or at least my kids) Thanks
