I"m sick and I feel like I'm hyperventilating. My god. You know, I haven't be this affected since the only other time I was affected by a celeb death, when Johnny Cash died. George, motherfuck. Goddamn it.
There were two things that I was able to teeth myself through some pretty heavy post 9/11 SHELL SHOCK(George would hate me saying Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). George's two albums, You are All Diseased and what I consider to be the greatest comedy set ever, "Back in Town" just let me somehow regulate myself then. Of course, 2 hours of material played on end for 5 months needed some supplimentation and thats where the buddays came into play.
The effect of his work as a safety blanket then was so profound for me, but it was borne out of an appreciation for his stuff basically as long as I could think. I loved Carlin on Campus and Carlin at Carnegie when I was 6 and 7 years old and to grow older myself and grow with his material, I can't begin to articulate how highly I thought of this man. I never met him, but he feels like my Irish Catholic yogi, who could lend insight and perspective to all corners of the soul.
I'll never be the same after hearing this, and with each word of failing health from George, I'd wish we'd get one more HBO set from him. Maybe the last few weren't the peak material, but they kick the dogshit out of pretty much every other standup working. I guess we got one last fall, but I somehow want to believe there's more to come, but the fact is, its gone, and he's gone, and a light has gone out on us all.
Fuck, this sucks ass, fuck fuck fuck.
Thanks for hearing some venting guys and Thank you George for everything. You made an impact you could never possibly understand. I love you, rest in peace.
Carlin, Pryor, Bruce, all gold, but I was always a Carlin guy.

When I read the title, I was immediately pissed at Underdog. (sorry budday).
Wow, yeah he was old, but I never really thought about it; he's just always been around.
I used to listen to his albums on the record player next to my bed as a kid, while I was falling asleep. I'd have to have the volume real low so my Dad wouldnt hear what I was listening to.
His politics were different than mine in his later life, but I'd still laugh along with what he said. He had a way of expressing his views without making you feel stupid if you disagreed; he provoked thought.
I even liked his sitcom a few years back; of course he was the only reason to watch.
Thanks for the laughs, Mr Carlin. Rest In Peace.

In junior high school I used to listen to Classic Gold, A Place For My Stuff, Playin' With Your Head, and a shitty copy of Carlin At Carnegie that I taped onto audio cassette by holding my boom box up to the tv speaker while watching the video, while I was in bed. I memorized bit after bit, and would recite them for my classmates during our music class on Fridays because our douchebag teacher would always run a video. So a group of about 8 of us would sit in a semi-circle in the back of the band room and I would go through bits like "Have A Nice Day", "Rice Krispies", "The 11 O'Clock News", "Hello/Goodbye", and of course the expanded version of "7 Words" (Twat's Twat and that's that.") I never bombed.
The guy could make anybody laugh because he played in so many areas. He was of course a brilliant wordsmith and writer, but he was just as hilarious when he would just be silly. Thank the invisible man in the sky that he left us with so much recorded work.
He was the comedian as an artist, he was always working on his craft, and he never became dated or lame.
And most of all he was one funny motherfucker.

Really sad news to wake up to. One of my friends had his Myspace status set to "I will run every car with a Baby on Board sticker off the road in tribute to the loss of a legend," and I immediately said, "Oh no..." out loud. I guess Carlin is one of those guys that I just thought would be around forever. It's been a while since a celebrity passing has really affected me. This is a huge one though. Carlin was the guy who really got me interested in standup comedy. I can't believe I never got around to seeing him live, even though I had many chances to do so.

George Carlin
2008 Prize Recipient
The Kennedy Center will award the eleventh annual Mark Twain Prize for American Humor to George Carlin on Monday, November 10, 2008 at 8 p.m. in the Kennedy Center Concert Hall. The award, named to honor one of America’s—and the world’s—greatest humorists, will feature some of the biggest stars in comedy. The program, to be taped by WETA Washington, D.C. will air on PBS stations nationwide in February as George Carlin: The Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize. Tickets for the event will go on sale to the general public on August 11, 2008.
"The Kennedy Center is pleased to present George Carlin with The Mark Twain Prize," said Kennedy Center Chairman Stephen A. Schwarzman. "In his lengthy career as a comedian, writer, and actor, George Carlin has not only made us laugh, but he makes us think. His influence on the next generation of comics has been far-reaching." "Thank you Mr. Twain," said Carlin. "Have your people call my people."
George Carlin is a Grammy-winning American stand-up comedian, actor, and author, whose career has spanned more than fifty years. Carlin has released twenty-two solo albums and three New York Times best-selling books, which have sold over two million copies. The five-time Emmy nominated actor starred in an unprecedented fourteen HBO Specials and appeared in a wide variety of television and movie roles. He was the first-ever host of Saturday Night Live, and has appeared on The Tonight Show over 130 times.

My father, brother, and I always watched his stuff together. The first stand-up I ever saw of his was George Carlin: Doin' It Again (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0246642/) in 1990, followed by my favorite stand-up and what I consider his best show ever: George Carlin: Jammin' In New York (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0246643/).
The latter was so dirty and raw and I loved it. Definitely had a hand in my thinking now being a 27 year old.

I completely agree. I've listened to Carlin since the 70s and I think he got funnier with each special through the 90s. I was also one of the few who really enjoyed his FOX sitcom 'The George Carlin Show' which only managed to last 27 episodes. I was lucky enough to find the whole series on torrents since no one had the sense to put it on DVD. I think it's a very funny show. I thought his last HBO special was very good and was hoping he had a few more left in him.
When you think of comedy pioneers it was Lenny, Carlin and Pryor... Now we've lost them all. I hope George got his wish and he's watching us destroy ourselves on a celestial CNN.

I saw Carlin a few times, my most memorable back in '92-ish.
I have never seen a man command an audience the way he did. It was great he went on for about an hour, and then said, "Well, that's the HBO special that airs next week... now what would you like talk about?" and he continued for well over an hour with just solid laughs, old material, new, observations about the room. It was amazing. I laughed harder in those few hours than I have in my entire life. From that day on, he was one of my heroes. It's sad to see him gone.

Saw him at Club Bene in the 1980s, Count Basie and Paramount in Asbury Park in the 90s, at least a dozen times.
One show I saw him get heckled to the point of stopping the show. It's happened before, Ive heard audio on the nets.
Long story short: Carlin doing a story/character bit, quiet, setting up a scenario, about row ten a loud drunk woman is letting everyone know she is drunk, and loud. Carlin starts glancing over, people start mumbling, tension, then whispering 'be quiet!' and the tension is rising; shes clueless, the whole orchestra is mumbling now, until someone behind her says 'shut up lady!' and she gets up turns around and stars yelling at the guy behind her.
Carlin is in mid sentence and is like 'And so I look at my friend and say...' He breaks character, stops dead and announces loudly: I'm sorry folks, but can someone please stick a cock in that womans mouth and shut her the fuck up ?!?!'
Two explosions followed in quick order. First the audience. The release of tension, the lady, we were on our feet exploding in applause and laughter and screams. Fucking pandeminium. Carlin looks lost.
Then the lady reacts, she gets up, and runs to the front of the stage, and starts screaming at Carlin, I mean Row 1. She makes it up there, but no one can hear her, because we're screaming, and Carlin is going OFF on the Mic...
"You Fucking Cunt you shoud die of the slowest cancer...' or whatever diatribe he has, he just cut her off at the knees for a good 30-40 seconds until security grabbed her and dragged her kicking and screaming out the door. This got another standing screamin O.
Georige is pacing the stage, shaking head, he's truly upset, and is like 'I apologize sincerely for that. I hate doing that but I'm trying to time this for HBO next week and that Cunt...'
We were just in awe. All the times I saw him, and here he is, show completely de-railed, just talking to us, literally apologizing for someone else being an asshole.

This is just devastating. He was a personal hero of mine. Along with Richard Pryor, just the funniest and most thought provoking comedians ever. I feel lucky to have lived at the same time as these two geniuses.
And now they're gone. Who's left? Who will change the world and my kids lives the way George did mine?
"I love words. I thank you for hearing my words. I want to tell you something about words that I think is important.
They're my work, they're my play, they're my passion. Words are all we have, really. We have thoughts but thoughts are fluid. Then we assign a word to a thought and we're stuck with that word for that thought.
So be careful with words. I like to think that the same words that hurt can heal, it is a matter of how you pick them." - "The Seven Words You Can't Say on TV", George Carlin, 1937 - 2008.

Oh my f'n god. I came to work this morning and turned on my computer and yahoo popped up and the first thing i saw to start off my day is the news of George Carlin died of a heart attack. I was on the verge of kirkin out and taking the day off because the man was absolutely brilliant. He has been an inspiration to me since i was about 12 when i picked up a couple of his live cds and i was hooked. Even these days at work, during my lunch break i would often have George Carlin on youtube playing in the backround while i was slacking. Even though he didnt know me and vice versa, he always told it like it is and spoke from the heart. George, you are a genius and i hope you rest in peace in the afterlife when you're chillin with Richard Pryor and Lenny Bruce.

I remember my first experience listening to him. I was a young kid and my father had this 77 Chevy and he had an 8 track player and I would sneak into the car and put my fathers Carlin tape in and laugh my ass off and listen to it over and over. I had the skips memorized. He was my first and favorite comedian, and when I heard about it today, I felt like I lost a favorite uncle and it tugged at my heart.

Sad news. I've seen all of his HBO Specials and that last one was really painful to watch. He really did not look good. I'd say Godspeed but he'd probably have a good laugh at that. So, I'll say "Off to meet the big imaginary man in the sky."
EDIT: Oh, I think we've got the Ichi Ban Story tomorrow.
I gotta say, Judge Smails hits a good point here. I've seen a whole lot of his HBO stuff, but lately he would act tired and seemed like he just didn't care anymore. I was unaware he was having coronary problems, but it explains a whole lot about his performances these past couple years.
Having said that, I think we just lost the other of the two greatest comedians of all time. I wonder who is closing in Heaven, Carlin or Pryor? Either way, it's a sold out show every night, guaranteed.

I usta have it & yes it was very similar. When Carlin was signed to Flip Wilson's Little David record label, he in turn got Burns & Schreiber signed becuz of their association in the past.

The earliest example of Carlin's work that I have is the 'Take Offs and Put Ons' album from 1966. It has 'Wonderful W-I-N-O' and 'The Indian Sargeant' on it and you could definitely hear the Jack Burns influence in the voice of the sargeant.
Then I have everything through 'A Place for My Stuff'. The man was just phenomenally talented.
On a totally unrelated item; How hard is it to learn to play the harmonica? I want to learn how before I take the dirt nap. Are there teachers or will I have to try to pick it up on my own? They had Jersey Girl on today (I'd never actually seen it), so I watched it.
There's a scene at the end where Carlin is sitting at the bar with Affleck and Affleck says to him "Don't you want to live alone again?"
And Carlin responds with a great piece of acting (and maybe the only decent acting in the movie), "Not as much as I don't want to die alone."

I think it's on Smith. Most of his writing, including his comic book work, is heavy handed and too pleased with itself to sound natural coming out or real people.
Otherwise, I'm with you and Mojo -- it didn't suck as badly as people said. It was just more kindhearted and gentle then what he normally puts out so they were thrown by it.

Exactly. I'm not putting it up there as some great film that people need to see, but when I finally saw it, I was expecting something insanely horrible based on how people savaged it. It ended up being very unremarkable, but still a watchable, charming little film.

Not to dredge this up again, but, I didn't watch any of the HBO marathon because, like Ron said, if my dad died I wouldn't want to sit around watching 8 hours of video of the guy. But tonight I decided to break out the DVD box set and watch Jammin' In New York.
I hadn't watched that show in at least 10 years and I always loved it, but viewing it tonight I realized what a masterpiece it is. Carlin is in top form and firing on all cylinders. Everything is there: political stuff (he slams conservatives and liberals), social commentary, silly stuff, brilliant physical comedy(sometimes his entire body, others just his face), character voices, and amazing wordplay. The verbal performance alone is at such a high level of virtuosity it's ridiculous. He cuts a blazing pace, firing off line after line, often with alliteration and doesn't studder or stop once. Everything flows beautifully, each bit is flawlessly executed, and it's absolutely hilarious. And, as docgoblin posted earlier, he ends the show with the most beautifully poetic piece of his career. It is stand-up comedy at the highest level I've ever seen it performed. Check it out if you can.
I thought his last special, 'Bad For You' was fantastic.
Watched On-Demand again, and it just absolutely kills.
The only one that's really kind of questionable is 'Life Is Worth Losing.' Don't get me wrong, I like it, but I can understand how people didn't think it was that funny...it's not really that jokey...it's more of an affirmation of his beliefs.

Some final words coming from George Carlin
Jul 14, 1:53 PM (ET)
NEW YORK (AP) - Some final thoughts are coming from George Carlin.
Free Press, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, said Tuesday that the comedian's book "Last Words" will be published in November.
Carlin died in June 2008 at age 71 and worked on the book for the last decade of his life. He collaborated on it with author and humorist Tony Hendra.
Hendra is best known for the memoir "Father Joe."
Carlin's other books included "Brain Droppings" and "Napalm and Silly Putty."
