Specifically for the retail price of 249.99, is it possible, I go to Best Buy and Game Stop and they never seem to have them. Any tips?

I bought mine from Amazon, when I couldn't buy it from Best Buy, Gamespot, Sears, Target, or anywhere else.

I got mine at Toys R Us about a month ago. I didn't walk in planning on getting one, but they had about 30 in stock so I picked one up.
Here's a site that will alert you when they're available online - http://wiialerts.com/
You could also try ebay, and can probably find one for pretty close to retail price http://cgi.ebay.com/1-NEW-NINTENDO-WII-CONSOLE-SYSTEM-5-GAMES-2-CONTROLLERS_W0QQitemZ220247917582QQihZ012QQcategor yZ139971QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Try Toys R Us. Talked to a manager there the day Mario Kart launched and he said they usually have them in stock often, and had some that day.
I've seen stacks of the base system at my local Best Buy for $249.99

Call and see when they expect to get some in. Usually on a Tuesday, see if you can pre order one, or get there early. Noone carries enough of them to just get lucky. I got mine on ebay, with a bundle and extra controllers so te price was very fair

I bought mine when I was on vacation last year at Walmart in Fredonia, NY.
When my wife and I asked the person if they still had Wiis left, she looked at us so weird, like, "Of course, why wouldn't we?"
So go somewhere far from civilization and they'll probably have one.

Future Shop. They get em in every week. If you cant find one there, try EB games. They also get them in a lot and they are less busy so they last longer.

For anyone in NYC, the Nintendo World Store in Rockefeller Center gets Wiis in every day. You just have to get there early and stand in line.

i'm in n.c. too, targets a good start, and toys r us, i literally saw a stack of wii's at the toys r us in danville va.
Since so much Wii stuff is in short supply...whether you're looking for the Wii Console, the Wii Fit, or Mario Kart (all three are in short supply)...this is what you do:
1) Sign up for Wii Alerts
2) Bookmark Gamestop, Circuit City, Wal-Mart, and Sears. All four of those stores show their in-store stock online, and what specific stores have things in stock. I checked Gamestop for a few days straight, and found Mario Kart...found a Wal-Mart with Wii Fit in stock a few days later.
3) Keep tabs on Amazon if you want to order online. Amazon is by far the easiest online dealer to get Wii stuff.
And for what it's worth, I believe Toys R Us's get their stuff in by opening on Sundays.
Other than that...pre-order any future stuff you want. Because Nintendo screws everyone on supply on purpose (and I can't be convinced otherwise!).

Drink more water than your soon to be dead opponent.
Best Buy and Game Stop
Just to comment further...Best Buy is notoriously one of the worst places to get a Wii (although, ironically, I got mine there by luck). I'd just avoid it altogether, unless you happen to be driving by it one day and decide to stop in for a minute.
With Gamestop, you can check the in-store stock online, like I said, so just do that...save yourself a trip.
