Seriously, Brodeur gets the Vezina? B-double-oh.

Respect him as being a good goalie, but seriously hockey people, enough of the Brodeur d-sucking.

"Thanks to my teammates, but I uh, hope I get better teammates next year"

Malkin told the newspaper he does not need to exceed the $8.7 million salary of captain Sidney Croby but sources tell TSN the likely target for Malkin is a five-year deal worth more than $9 million per season.

Man, I feel like you should run some sort of hockey publication. I mean I know it's a matter of looking things up, but you really are on top of everything. I don't think I am as in to hockey, but I do appreciate all this breaking hockey news from time to time.

Hossa has already said that he is willing to take less money to stay with the Pens. He said he wants to stay with a winner and loves the front office, namely Lemieux. It's early but it looks like the only losses to the roster may be Malone, Scuderi and Gonchar. And even then, that isn't definite. This team is going to be good for a while. But Detroit looks to be coming back just as strong, so who knows if any team can take it from them next year.

Here's their list of UFAs and RFAs

Unrestricted F Kris Beech, G Ty Conklin, F Pascal Dupuis, D Mark Eaton, F Adam Hall, F Connor James, F Georges Laraque, F Marian Hossa, F Ryan Malone, D Alain Nasreddine, D Brooks Orpik, F Gary Roberts, F Jarkko Ruutu, F Nathan Smith, F Jeff Taffe

Restricted F Tim Brent, F Jonathan Filewich, G Marc-Andre Fleury, F Ryan Stone

TSN hasn't run their off season game plan for the Pens yet, so I dont know what their cap looks like, but you gotta figure if theyre gonna pay 9 a season for Malkin, plus what they have to pay Fleury, AND what theyre gonna have to pay Staal (who's up after next year), its gonna be really tough for them. Theyve never been able to spend up to the cap because they dont have enough revenue coming in from Civic Arena (or so they say) and by the time the new place opens in a couple years may be too late

If they can bring back Malone, Orpik and Hossa, all will be well in Penguins land for a long time.

I see no problems with them resigning Fleury, Malkin and Staal.

They will spend the money now that they have their new arena in place and that they are finally out of the red.

But the ticket prices will jump next year for sure.

Love seeing Lidstrom get another Norris. He's one of the most impeccable defenseman I've ever had the pleasure to watch. I think I can count on one hand the number of times I've seen him get caught out of position, and he's phenomenal at stripping the puck off of opponent's sticks without having to be physical. He runs the offense and the transition game (as well as the power play and penalty kills) and is as complete a player as has ever suited up in the NHL.

Great to see Datsyuk win the Selke and the Byng, too.

Truth be told, if i was a Pens fan, i'd MUCH rather have Malone than Hossa if it comes down to a choice between the two

Hossa had 12 goals and 14 assists in the playoffs.

Imagine him playing 80 games next to Sidney Crosby? He's going to have at least 100 points.

Malone is replaceable, Hossa is not. Especially since they gave up Colby Armstrong, Erik Christensen, Angelo Esposito, and a 1st rounder.

You can't make a deal like that without either a) winning the cup or b) resigning the guy

If they can grab Dan Fritsche in the deal, they will be fine.

Yeah but if you just put together a bunch of skilled offensive guys and have no guys with heart/guts up front who can put the puck in the net consistently you become

And no one wants that

Bill Simmons would call Malone a "glue guy". You NEED someone like him that can pick up dirty goals and play tough in front of the net more than you need another skill guy if youre Pittsburgh...its that simple, and Fritsche's a guy whos NEVER gotten 20 goals in the big leagues...Malone had close to 30 last year

I don't think the Pens are too concerned about their offensive needs. Realistically they should have 3 guys with 100+ points.

Staal should bounce back from the Sophmore slum (as far as goals go anyhow), he had 12 goals in the regular season and six in the playoffs, so I assume he'll bounce back to being around a 25-30 goal guy again.

I'm interested to see what they do with Ruutu, Dupuis, Laraque and Hall.

I'd figure at least two of them should be back, hopefully its Laraque and Ruutu.

They need to find a good faceoff guy and they need to resign Orpik.

Talk is Shanny may retire...with that and Jagr likely to flee to Russia (the Caps were paying half his salary anyway so he wasn't that big of a cap hit for them as he could have been), theyll be able to sign Avery...i would say its a MUST that they do since they win with him in the lineup

The only pressing needs I see for the Red Wings in the offseason are a quality back up goalie and a right handed forward for the power play.

They feel Jimmy Howard is ready, but someone like Olie Kolzig (if he doesn't end up in Montreal) would be a great addition for them, as would Cristobal Huet (make Osgood the backup)

This is a big deal cause now you won't be able to get players that are already under contract with a Euro club. If you sign a 5 year deal with a Euro club, youre there all 5 years now unless you buy yourself out. Basically, the Euros wanted more money coming back for transfers (low dollar, loss of skilled players), and the owners balked.

Draft is tonight!!!! Hope my Isles stand pat, unless they are overwhelmed. PLEASE PLEASE let Filatov fall to us. I know we could use D-men, as evidence seeing the Red Wings awesome D in the playoffs but we cant score for shit! I would love either Staal or Toews in the 2nd round. We have 5 picks in the first 3 rounds, which kicks ass. I say Offense for the first 2 picks, then D-men. There are rumors of a Toronto-Isles trade. Isles get Bryan McCabe and 7th overall pick and Toronto get Isles 5th overall pick. NO WAY. Stick with the youth movement Garth. McCabe sucks. Filatov gets picked early, then go with Luke Schenn. I know ESPN says we'd get Petrangelo but I hear bad things about him. But hes considered one of the top 3 d-men in the draft, along with Bogosian and Doughty. DON'T FUCK UP GARTH!!!

According to a report in the Toronto Star, the Russian teams are prepared to offer the Russian-born Malkin a contract that would make him the highest-paid hockey player in the world. The multi-year contract would be worth at least $12.5 million tax free per season, or the equivalent of $15 million per year in the NHL.

"Hey, we can afford to pay more than the NHL right now," a high-ranking executive with the Russian league, called the Continental League, told the Star. "Our economy is commodities-based so we're not going through the same problems that you have in America."

The Continental League executive confirmed to the Star that some teams have already offered contract to some players that are already under contract to NHL clubs.

According to the executive, the league is not worried about the NHL legally contesting any contract offers

"What happened with Malkin when he came to the NHL?" the official said.

I wouldn't say Hossa is necessarily done in Pittsburgh, but he'd be stupid not to test the market to see what team (Boston or New York) would over pay for him

Its going to come down to being on a winner every year of his contract for less money in Pittsburgh or taking more cash with no guarantee to win

We've had 10 first round picks in the last 5 drafts....wow

And i like what i'm reading about Dmitry Kugryskev

Over the weekend McPhee also noted that the Caps enjoy a distinct drafting advantage by virtue of having Alexander Ovechkin. While most other organizations in rounds 1 and 2 will understandably be wary of selecting Russians then in the absence of a transfer agreement, and now the formation of the Continental Hockey League as a bigger, better-paying version of the RSL, the Caps as they interview Russian prospects can gauge interest in the youngsters’ willinginess to come over and skate with their nation’s hero. Kugryskev is one such prospect.

“I dream about the NHL every day of my life. It’s my dream,” Kugryskev said recently.

With respect to his new Russian winger, McPhee probably wasn’t just whistling that 30-team, post-draft sunshine tune that’s a staple of every draft’s conclusion, either. Last season the right winger scored 58 points in 35 games with CSKA-2. His lottery pick teammate Filatov had 66 points in 34 games. He’s renowed for his worth ethic.

Avery is and always has been an egotistical maniac. It's reflected in his style of play and comments on and off the ice. I've said since we had him that if he weren't on the Rangers I wouldn't be able to stand him.

That being said am I sad to see him go? Hell yeah. He had this polarizing ability that somehow fired the Rangers up (sometimes) and helped get the wins. Is he worth the alleged $4 mil he was asking for. Nah, sorry, Aves. Hope your internship at Teen Vogue has been all you hoped for and more.

As for Barry Melrose, why couldn't he just go back to calling games and being the magical t.v. personality he was? And, in the same vein, why can't we get JD back? Srsly. Screw St. Louis.

Rumour's going around that the Caps may deal Michael Nylander back to the Rangers

Isn't really his fault, but he got hurt and Fedorov made him superfluous..I think its all dependent on re signing Sergei (from where I can tell, this is the only place he wants to play outside of going back to the Rus to play with his brother), so we're looking pretty set at the centre spot with Fedorov and Backy centering the scoring lines, Boyd Gordon (an RFA, but he'll be re signed) anchoring the checking line, and Diamond Dave Steckel forming the 4th line with Brash and Brads, which was arguably our best line for the Phillydelphia series

But then again, if youre the Rangers, where do you put him? You've already got Gomez, Drury and Dubinsky, and Nylander makes 4.5...makes no sense for them to deal Dubinsky for Nylander, although I wouldn't complain if they did ;)

Really funny site that pokes fun at that idiot Eklund.... (http://peklundthephoneyhockeyblogger.blogspot.com/)

I just received a call on my Fisher Price Walkie Talkie from Mike Gillis. Gillis has informed me that a 3 way deal has been in the works and it is up to Malkin to decide if he wants to do this. Nothing would go to Vancouver, Cole would go Carolina and Malkin would go to hell. This is very tricky though. Malkin wants to make more than Sid is making but average less yearly. If this can be worked out then he may agree to go to hell.

Calgary is making a charge for Spezza. They have seized all his credit cards and have given them to Ray Emery to buy as many weird clothes as he can. Since he already had alot of weird clothes and acts all weird then this trade should not be perceived as weird. The trade would be...Spezza to LA for Brown. The Kings then trade Spezza back to Ottawa for Brown. Then the Sens receive exclusive negotiating rights to negotiate with themselves to decide how much negotiating they wish to do with Wade Redden.

Evgeni Malkin has cashed in on five-year contract extension with the Penguins worth $8.7 million per season.
The deal is exact same that Pittsburgh gave to fellow phenom Sidney Crosby last summer. COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- The Blue Jackets traded enigmatic offensive star Nikolai Zherdev and center Dan Fritsche to the New York Rangers for defensemen Christian Backman and Fedor Tyutin on Wednesday.

Zherdev gives the Rangers one of the NHL's best one-on-one players, but also a Russian right winger who has frequently fallen into disfavor with management and teammates. He had a career-high 61 points last season with 26 goals and 35 assists, second on the Columbus team to captain Rick Nash.

Burke told the Los Angeles Times that the rise in salaries for young players can be traced back to Lowe.

"You go right now from entry-level to what used to be the third contract, thanks to two offer sheets from Kevin Lowe," Burke said to the Times.

"Most [general] managers don't like starting fights with any other managers. . Thanks to the Edmonton Oilers, the second contract has disappeared."

"They're all being re-signed at inflated prices," he explained to the newspaper. "Everything I said a year ago has come true. Every single word."

The guy never (to my knowledge) never said exclusively "im going to sign with Pittsburgh". Management KNEW the risks they were taking when they traded Christiansen, Armstrong and Esposito for him, and that it wasn't guaranteed he would come back...thats the risk you take when you bring in a guy who's going to become a UFA. I would be more upset with management than Hossa over this one. I don't understand the perspective of Pens fans that he "stabbed us in the back"

They lost Malone and Hossa, and one of them was going to go either way.

So yea, we still have the two best players in the world locked up for the next 5 years, the best young goalie in hockey, they kept Orpik, Eaton and Dupuis for pennies on the dollar and they replaced LaRaque.

We're still the best team in the East and to think otherwise is just foolish.

you really think so? I'd love it to be true. I think faster, but I don't see stronger, nor tougher.

Their #1 target should have been a bruising D-man like Orpik, but nothing like that was gotten. Avery is gone, replaced by a bunch of maybes.

Jagr? So long, and thanks for the Fish.
Naslund (35)? Redden (31 who played like 37 last year)- what happened to getting younger?

The 2 guys we got from Columbus are 22 and 23 and have good talent.

Zherdev, if he can put it together has top scorer talent.

As far as tougher. Rissmiller and Voros make them tougher, both big brutes.

Nusland still had 25 goals and 30 assists last year. Thats not terrible. He should get more with this team.

If we can get Charpanov in here, with some of the young talent coming up, along with Zherdev, we can have some really good young players.

The Devils signed Chico Resch to back up Broduer. They expect it won't affect his broadcasting schedule at all.

Ha!

It's all good with the Devils though. We're gonna be the 95 cup winners all over again.

Or become failures in the division.

I'm thinking the latter is more likely.

I still for the life of me can't understand the venom from Pens fans towards Marian Hossa right now

On another point, nothing makes me happier than the current mass exodus occurring in Pittsburgh right now...it makes my heart sing with joy

Umm, what? Did I expect us to retain Hossa? Not really, nor do I feel stabbed in the back. But to sign a one year deal really doesn't make any sense at all. Mass exodus in Pittsburgh? What the hell are you talking about? Who? Also, please tell me who you think is tops in the East if not Pittsburgh. Man I hope you say Washington....

i wouldn't say nothing. they got three draft picks out of campbell which is better than nothing if they would have kept him instead of trading. there is no way the sabres would have dished out 7.2 mil a year for campbell (which in my opinion is highly overpaid.)

I like the moves the isles made actually. I dont expect a thing but neither has anyone the last two years but Nolan gets the most out of these guys some how. If Ricky can stay healthy and not try to play every game, we could get an 8th seed. Ideally, id rather tank and get another top 5 pick, as the draft next year is very Forward heavy. I think it depends how we are at the deadline. If we are in it, go for it. If not, trade away the vets.

Kevin Lowe rips Brian Burke... (http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=242532&lid=headline&lpos=topStory_nhl)

"Where do I begin?," started Lowe. "He's a moron, first of all. Secondly, he really believes that any news for the NHL is good news. Thirdly, he loves the limelight and I don't think anyone in hockey will dispute that. Lastly, he's in a pathetic hockey market where they can't get on any page of the newspaper let alone the front page of the sports, so any of this stuff carries on."

"Don't even ask me about Scott Niedermayer, I've already lowered myself in terms of (talking about) how they acquired him," he said. "That's a story for another day, but they were able to bring Niedermayer and Pronger in and they won a Stanley Cup."

Good. Nolan wasnt going to play the way Snow wanted the team. Nolan wanted all vets. Snow was the kids to play. I wanted to see more Tambellini, Okposo, Comeau and Nielson over Satan, Fedotenko, Vasicek and Hilbert. Also, Nolan tries to make the kids something they arent. Tamebellini is not a grinder and not someone who will dig in the corner. Hes a speedster, goal scorer with a great shot.

Sources: Sundin wants to join Rangers
Posted: Sunday August 17, 2008 08:24AM ET

Free-agent center Mats Sundin has declared his interest in playing for the Rangers this season, well-connected sources have told The Post. J.P. Barry, who represents the elite, 37-year-old former Toronto pivot, has been in constant communication with Rangers front-office personnel this week, The Post has learned, though the conversations have not reached the stage of a contract negotiation. There have been no numbers exchanged between Sundin and the Rangers. We're told Sundin, who recorded 78 points (32-46) last season, has no interest in returning to the Maple Leafs, who have offered him a one-year, $7M contract to re-up. Sundin apparently has negligible interest in joining Montreal, which has been chasing him since February, or Vancouver, which has offered a two-year, $20M deal. Indeed, sources report that No. 13's second choice is Philadelphia, whose GM, Paul Holmgren, has been aggressive in his pursuit of the first-line center who could swing the balance of power in the East.

If they aren't already, this would make the Rangers into a legit top Cup contender.

steve stamkos era begins

Its kinda weird that he's basically been a complete afterthought due to the wacky antics of the Koules/Barrie ownership team, i mean, youre looking at a team that during just this offseason

(a) signed/traded for every ancient Penguin around except for Syl Apps

(b)the Barry Melrose Thing

(c)The "we'll win the SouthEast Division" guarantee, which led to one of my all time favourite quotes from Coach Gabby:

"We just hope to be in second place because Tampa says they're going win the division. So if we play good enough to get to second place, we'll be happy." - Bruce Boudreau, 7/10/08

(d) the Dan Boyle Thing (where they threatened to release him/send him home if he didn't waive his no trade clause

(e) The John Tortorella thing, which led to Torts RIPPING the Ning's new group

You got a couple of cowboys in there as owners. You finish 30th in the National Hockey League, I was there for seven years, I know it's coming as a coach, and it probably should come to a coach if you finish 30th. But how it all goes about and how you treat your people and run your business is very important in this league. I look at the club and how some things have been done and how they treated Danny Boyle and really lying to the kid, and some of the other things that have gone on there, it's a total different team. Do I think the team needed to be blown up for it to get back to competing? No, I don't.

There still are some good players there. But new owners come in and they try to reinvent the wheel. I'm anxious to see what happens. I don't wish anything bad on them. I have a lot of loyalty to the players who are still there and people who work in the office. But as far as the two cowboys that went in there and bought that team, I have zero respect for them.

(f) the gigantic Vinny LeCavalier Deal

(g) the Andrej Mesazros Thing

and oh yeah....steve stamkos...

plus with the rays still being relevant and the bucs season about to start hockey goes back to being the 3rd child like in most other cities

The Ning actually had very good attendance last year despite being absolutely dreadful...the Buccaneers don't play 6 days a week, and the Rays will be over with by the end of October, so there's nothing else going on

is this serious? i swear i read like a few months ago Lou saying they would NEVER have a 3rd jersey

EDIT: Now that im looking at it, i kind of like it

Double Edit: Am i retarded? how was i not able to see that was photoshopped?

FUCKING HILARIOUS!!!

I was just reviewing the thread to catch up and I laughed the first second I saw CJ's purposely hack job! Then HHH and others go serious discussion on the very jersey sent me over the top!! Fucking great!

And I like both the bottom Hurricane jersey and the Coyotes too. Sorry, both are pretty sweet. And while some may not have a 3rd listed on that page, it is believed that the NHL is staggering the releases over a few years (2 or 3).

And I hate how the league and people get on FL for it's attendance , even though they do nothing to fix the dump and run Marlin management and do nothing to limit the advantage of teams like Boston and New York in the Ray's very division. Sorry, the league is a mess with varied attendance due to the league itself. You can't expect an area that has become mostly Yankee and Sox fans due to the league setup the way it is to suddenly become a GREAT baseball town.

Talk to me when all their talent is up for contract and go to four teams, none being TB.

There are certain teams jersies i NEVER EVER EVER EVER will buy....

....Carolina's one of them....

In addition to my multitude of Caps jerseys (my Captain Chris Clark I wear for gamedays, and an Ovechkin non red/white/blue and my old school authentic Kelly Miller red/white/blue) I got a Canadiens authentic (no name), a blue Rangers Leetch, a white Bruins Samsonov, an old white Blackhawks Roenick and an old Sabres white LaFontaine, and an Avalanche Roy...I really need to buy this one:

Think that one's next on my list...that or an old Winnipeg Jets jersey cause they were goddamn FANTASTIC looking

Bulgaria's women's hockey team loses 82-0 to Slovakia...

No that's not a typo....82-0

Down 77-0 with three minutes to go, Bulgaria put in its backup goaltender, who promptly let in another five goals on five shots in just 1:25 of playing time. The game's final shots on goal were 139-0. Slovakia had 12 players record hat tricks, including one 10-goal scorer, one nine-goal scorer and four others with eight.

the red team couldn't even skate backwards, every rush was 3 on 1. Their balance was so bad that in the mele when the ref gently touched anyone on team red they fell down. I love how they wait till 80 - 0 to fight. Crowd was crazy, I could barely make out what was goin on.
