And Varlamov doesn't even know English.....jokes on Avery

aparently Varlamov speaks pretty good English--better than Semin even. But is super paranoid of being misquoted so he only speaks to the press through an interpreter.

How about these numbers, though. .982 save percentage, .5 GAA, and 56 saves in 2 games, including his first career shutout. Even if he's just decent from now on things will be looking up...

I didn't see the game. I saw the highlights and all I can say is BULLSHIT.

Brodeur doesn't dive. He keeps his head. They've been crashign into him all the time this series. Where are th calls. That game shoulda went into ot. The refs are atrocious.

HBox
04-21-2009, 09:01 PM
The explanation from the refs was even more atrocious. They said he had enough time to recover. First of all, you can knock around a goalie at will with no penalty? News to me. Second of all, they timed it on the post game. It was less than 2 seconds between the hit and when the shot passed him. Fucking assholes.

Two of those girls were due to goalie interference. Brodeur doesn't lose his cool like that. That's the frustration of being hit constantly with no consequence for the other team.

Also, if the Devils play like they are capable of (ie: the first game of the series and from the time they scored thir first in this game till a little after they tied it up) they can dominate the Hurricanes. They need to bring it all the time. I hope this fiasco with Brodeur brings it out of them.

Are you serious? Marty was way out of his crease and initiated the contact. He then acted like he got shot in the chest with a shotgun, noticed someone was about to unleash on him and got down.

Goalies who leave the crease get exactly what they deserve if there is incidental contact.

In reference to Fleury....

Do I think it'd be a crazy thought that they win a Cup with a lesser goalie due to all that offense? Not at all ... see Edmonton Oilers and Grant Fuhr. Tie in the fact that Crosby gets calls like Jordan in his prime and you've got yourself a lot of possibility.

However, I'll call it right now. If in fact you do win the Cup, your D/Goalie won't be why. If it happens be ready for some crazy offensive games. This doesn't mean the score has to be very high, just that his O in front will control games and he won't have to be the answer.

No, it didn't. He only has to sit back and pile up wins bc of a great offense. Just as your fate was last year, so it will happen again. When the things tighten up you have to fall back on a whiny player who could be so much better and a highly overrated goaltender. With the O talent of Malkin it's a shame too. Still, outside of Orpik your d is a group of O minded pussies.

from the "situation room on NHL.com

Interpretation of goalie interference rule: New Jersey at Carolina - 19:59 of the third period
04.21.2009 / 10:34 PM ET

The NHL's goalie interference rule sets a mandate to protect the goalie in the blue ice – to let the goalie do his job. In the white ice, it is a more delicate matter, including who moved into whom. The referee has one split-second look at it and it is a judgment call. NHL Hockey Operations has no video review capacity in this instance. Hockey Operations officials agreed with the call on the ice, that it looked like the goalie, Martin Brodeur, moved out toward the skater.

So the goal that was scored when he was interfered with in the crease?

The refs dropped the ball. It was a great game and it should have ended in overtime instead of with a shitty goal like that. And Carolina fans throwing things on the ice after Brodeur complained to the refs? Real classy. The team runs into goalies (they've been doing it all series) and their fans throw things on the ice. Classless.

i'm not sure what this means... was there another questionable goal in that game? i didn't see it if there was.

and, i never said they weren't cheap, or their fans had class, i'm saying i agree with the league on that particular call. i couldn't care less if broduer slammed his stick, beat a hooker or the fans burned the place down. do the refs suck? yes. is the league inconsistent? yes. is it fair? no. thats why carcillo and lucic got a game suspension and komisarek, lapierre and kostopolous are able to throw elbows and eye gouge people without repercussion. what can you do?

would you be this outraged if the EXACT same play happened at the other end to give your team the win? i doubt it, you would say "he barely touched him... he was out of his crease". i agree, its a shitty way to lose, but the bottom line is the devils lost that game and in the eyes of the sanctioning body it was legal. they need to shake it off and come back strong at home.

He really shouldn't be in the league. The NHL has made him into something more than he is. He's a dirt player who is on the cie for shock value.

As for the Devils game, I'm over the fact that it was a shitty goal. It was a missed call that prevented an awesome game from being even better by going into OT. The Dev's need to use that to their advantage though and steamroll them at the Rock like they did in the first game of the series.

Avery cheapens the game.

I see guys like this in our beer league all the time- guys with no talent who are not tough enough to play an intimidating game, so just resort to a series of cheap shots until someone pops them in the mouth. They ruin games. You end up playing some WWE-hockey crossover event for three periods.

The game would be much better off without these asshats.

NHL gives Kevin Smith the boot (http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_daddy/post/NHL-parts-ways-with-Kevin-Smith-too-controversi?urn=nhl,158421)

With zero acrimony whatsoever, and nothing but love for the NHL, I'm here to announce the Devils Playoffs blog will move back here, to SilentBobSpeaks.com. Even though I was able to find a way around swearing in the blog, the NHL site is - understandably - a lot less liberal than my website. So rather than submit multiple drafts of a blog in order to make it more general audience friendly, we've decided that maybe it'd be best to move the blog back here, where I can let my hair down more.

No cause for alarm or outrage. S'not a big deal. No reason to be pissed at the NHL or me. This just makes more sense - as sports generally play to family audiences, and I generally play to reprobates and Persons of Interest.

Blech...although it was hysterical how he got around swearing by using "Gretzky"

If the Caps/Rangers don't extend their series, instead of showing the Devils/Canes Sunday:

NBC stated in an e-mail press release today that if there is no Game 6 in that series [Caps/Rangers] Sunday, "the Jeep World of Adventure will air from 3-4 p.m. ET and the National Heads-Up Poker Championship from 4-6 p.m. ET."

If the Caps/Rangers don't extend their series, instead of showing the Devils/Canes Sunday:

There has been quite a contingent of folks watching the game outside of the arena on these massive screens (don't ask me why). However, during last week's game, NBC would not give permission to the Pens to air it outside. Pittsburgh is one of the largest hockey television markets in the country and people were earnestly upset. Just an awful PR move. Our local FSN coverage is light years better.

Glen Sather's letter to the NHL complaining about security at the Booth
(http://rangers.nhl.com/team/app?articleid=420207&page=NewsPage&service=page)

Because of the way the glass is installed, the patron sitting behind Coach Tortorella (the gray-haired, bearded man in the white T-Shirt) could literally scream into the coach's ear. According to Rangers trainer Jim Ramsay, one patron was screaming at the team, in graphic language, about whether Dan Girardi and Marc Staal have a sexual relationship. This was within earshot of several children seated nearby. Several other fans also made repeated homophobic remarks. Moreover, Mr. Ramsay reported that he and other bench personnel were spit on by one or more "fans" as they yelled through the gaps in the glass.

Actually, it doesn't look like Brashear is facing discipline for the hit on Betts...

According to the Post He's facing discipline for skating over the red line during warm ups and causing a mini ruckus (http://voices.washingtonpost.com/capitalsinsider/brashear-could-face-one-game-s.html)

Not to mention the shenanigans in the Calgary/Chicago series and the Philadelphia/Pittsburgh series...

The league REALLY needs a concrete disciplinary policy...or at least some uniformity or standard into how it doles out punishment

In Brashear's case, the length of his suspension for the hit (5 games, one for the pre game stuff), is primarily due to the fact that Betts' season was ended, which is a lot like putting the cart before the donkey

I'm pretty stoned at the moment, so bear with me.

The Hurricances deserved to win this series. The Devils played, once again, for about 45 mintues of the game. They laid back and the Hurricanes capitalized. Brodeur, as amazing of a goalie as he is, can't do it on his own. He is also very human. Not taking anything away from the shots that went in tonight, but a younger Broduer would have probably made those saves.

With that being said, lets go Boston. Boston and Detroit, or Boston and Chicago. Fucke evryone else. With the exception of Malkin who is the second best player in the game as of now.

For all the drawbacks that Avery has as being an absolute head case, he was the best player on the ice last night. He played so hard.

Rangers played almost a perfect first 30 minutes and when it was still 1-1, I knew they'd lose. On the first Caps goal, I thought they'd lose cuz it was so flukey. Oh well, back to baseball for me.

Coach Boudreau had a pretty apt quote:

I'd say that's right on the money. Philly was easily the Pens biggest rival for a while but I think they may be losing some ground to Washington. Flyers fans just seem too ridiculous and for lack of a better term, stupid to keep it lasting. It's always sweet but now expected to beat and outclass them.

The Caps on the other hand seem to have had the talent for several years now but somehow unable to find a way to win when it matters. This series should be quite good. I'd like some early road wins to appease some of the anxiety...

"People kept throwing hats," Sidney Crosby said tonight. "I was just asking if he could make an announcement to ask them to stop. I mean, the first wave came and then I think they were all pretty much picked up, and then more started coming. So for us, we just wanted to make sure we kept kind of moving and kept the game going, wanted to try to get back in it. So wasn't complaining about anything."

Its so hard to compare Malkin and Crosby and even Crosby and Ovechkin, because they are just completely different players. Malkin and Ovechkin are more of a Lemieux/Vinny type power scoring forward, and Crosby is a more durable Peter Forsberg.

I never said that you said he sucks. You said over rated. Numbers? Ok.

Rookie year at 18 years old on a Garbage team scores 102 points.

Sophomore campaign led the league with 120 points winning the Art Ross, Hart and Lester B. Pearson awards. First teenager to ever win a most valuable player award in any major American Sport and led a highly inexperienced team to the playoffs after finishing dead last.

Last season he scored 72 in an injury riddled year, dominated in the playoffs helping the team reach the cup and nearly forced a game 7 against a much better Detroit team.

This year, third in points in the regular season, currently leading in post season goals and second in points.

Again, over rated?

Because they dealt him at mid season to the Rangers

For the next six-and-a-half years, Nicholls was a key offensive talent for the Kings, with his best year (70 goals and 80 assists for 150 points in 79 games played) coming in 1988–89 after the team's acquisition of Wayne Gretzky. During that season, he became one of only 12 players to ever record an eight-point game in NHL history. However, with Stanley Cup aspirations, the Kings made the decision to trade the star centre for a pair of wingers. Nicholls joined the New York Rangers, helping to propel his new club to the second round of the playoffs.

Coyotes filed for Chapter 11 (http://www.newswire.ca/en/releases/archive/May2009/05/c8776.html)

TORONTO, May 5 /CNW/ - Jim Balsillie tabled an offer today to purchase
the Phoenix Coyotes, following the team's bankruptcy filing. The offer to
purchase the team for $212.5 million (U.S.) is conditional on relocation to
Southern Ontario, to become the seventh NHL franchise in Canada.
"The current team ownership asked that I table an offer to purchase the
Coyotes and significant discussions resulted in an offer that is in the best
interests of the franchise, the NHL, and the great hockey fans of Canada and
Southern Ontario," Mr. Balsillie said.

Balsillie wants to buy them and move them to Hamilton, Ontario.

He tried to buy the Penguins a few years ago when they were bankrupt but the NHL blocked it because they didn't want him moving them to Canada.

Then he tried to buy the Nashville Predators but the NHL blocked it again because they really want hockey to succeed in the south.

Bettman despises Balsillie, but he's probably going to take this to court to try and finally own a team.

Game 2 was nowhere near a close game. The pens scored the third goal on a power play with less than 2 minutes left when the goalie was pulled, so it was 6 on 4. Funny thing is, if the Pens scored on the earlier 5 on 3, it would have been a very different game...

Hockey was done in Phoenix when they moved the stadium out to Glendale. I've seen two 'Yotes games in person. One was in Phoenix "proper" in the American West Arena, but it wasn't a great hockey venue. The other time was in Glendale. Awesome stadium, but it's in the middle of fucking nowhere, takes forever to get to, and you gotta deal with speed cameras the entire way there.

As Snoogans would say, FUCK THAT SHIT

I'll support the Hamilton team still as my "second" team, but Bettman sure as fuck better not get involved in stopping the sale or trying to pull some MLB-taking-over-the-expos shit.

The team can't pull in fans because of the ill-advised move to Glendale, and it won't last long enough for the Light Rail system to get up there. Plus, Phoenix is one of the most depressed metros in the country right now. The only thing keeping it afloat is it's tourism and retirement areas, something Detroit can't lay claim to.

Thats where Balsillie wants to move them. He's tried it before (unsuccessfully) when he tried to buy Nashville (and when he tried to purchase the Penguins)

The league, in its infinite wisdom, HATES this guy, because it ruins their southern US marketing strategy. So they keep saying he's an "unfit owner", yet they felt the better alternative was to "steer" the Predators to a group with shady financing headed by Boots Del Biaggio, who turned out to (obviously) be crooked as all hell.

In this case, he's pretty much paying for them to operate while all this stuff with the League works out. The NHL removed the guy they had placed in charge of the franchise yesterday, so they now have control over the entire bankruptcy/solvency/movement issue. This is most definitely going to be solved in court in a really nasty way.

the other thing is, Bettman better watch out. If he starts putting all of his focus on saving the Coyotes from RIM, I can see Wang selling the islanders to Basilie on an end-around.

Being as Wang is on record as saying recently how he regrets buying the team, that's a really distinct possibility (of course, the league would still have to approve the sale of the Isles).

But wouldn't that be great for him if he bought the Isles, and then was able to move them to Hamilton with John Tavares as the star?

Caps in 5? All three of those games could have gone either way; quite bold. We'll see... I don't see it.

The only silver lining I can see from the Caps side, is that they were completely dominated last night, and STILL almost stole the game. That makes me feel kinda confident.

Since Games 4 and 5 are back to back, this can turn around in a heartbeat.

I'm really concerned at how the Bruins have been playing. Coming from such an emotional series to one with a team they don't have much of a history with. They are just playing terrible, can't clear the zone and they are having such a hard time setting up in the offensive zone.

:help:

i agree... they have played like shit this whole series. i'm willing to bet matt hunwick's ruptured spleen could play better D that steve montador. i can not stand that guy, he contriburtes NOTHING... DRESS HNIDY ALREADY!!!

Being as Wang is on record as saying recently how he regrets buying the team, that's a really distinct possibility (of course, the league would still have to approve the sale of the Isles).

But wouldn't that be great for him if he bought the Isles, and then was able to move them to Hamilton with John Tavares as the star?

Maybe im too much the optimist, but I still cant see the Isles moving. No way the league wants it. You lose a great rivalry with the Rangers. NY NEEDS 2 sports teams. Dont try to sell me on the devils, they play in NEW JERSEY. I believe that Isles will stay and Wang will get what he wants in the end somehow.

Odd Twilight Zone moment of the day:

Pittsburgh beats DC 3-2 in OT

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton beats Hershey 3-2 in OT

Pens out shoot Caps 43-22

Baby Pens out shoot Bears 43-25

does buffalo not count? because now they have 3... two of which are lousy, and the rags squeeked in so in reality they have 3 sucky teams.

Jerry Reinsdorf is rumoured to be in the running for purchasing the Coyotes and keep them in Glendale.. (http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/hockey/blackhawks/chi-07-reinsdorf-nhlmay07,0,7594520.story)

What an amazingly random occurrence only a day after the guy who wants to move them to Southern Ontario makes a big play for them. How convenient for Commissioner Bettman!

Good analysis from Puck Daddy
(http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_daddy/post/Is-Jerry-Reinsdorf-the-Coyotes-financial-oasis-;_ylt=AnM2iCao9vTLeHXH2kyWSmB_ppJ4?urn=nhl,161889)

It's not all that outlandish to believe Moyes acted quickly because Balsillie's offer wasn't going to be topped by another bidder at this time, and because Balsillie offered immediate and comprehensive relief for the Coyotes' many debts. Any delay would have allowed the NHL to broker its long-promised deal to keep the team in Glendale, and it wouldn't have been for Balsillie money. So Moyes attempted to take control back from the League by going Chapter 11 and making a deal with a dude they'd never deal with.
