Boston resigns Tim Thomas for 3 and 5.2 per.
Pretty much means Manny Fernandez goes bye bye (as he probably should) and gives them time to work Tukka Rask into the system there when the deals up....good deal for the Bs.
That's great news!
Manny just hasn't been the same since he got hurt mid-season and I think Rask will do just fine, as long as he can keep his cool.

Taylor Pyatt of Vancouver's fiancee was killed in a car accident... (http://sports.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20090403.wsptpyatt0403/GSStory/GlobeSportsHockey/home?cid=al_gam_mostemail)
THUNDER BAY, Ont. — Vancouver Canuck Taylor Pyatt is on his way home to Thunder Bay, Ont., after his fiancée was killed in a car accident.
Carly Bragnalo was killed Thursday in a crash in Jamaica where she was on holidays. She was 27. The couple was to be married this summer.
“Today the Canucks lost a member of our family,” Canucks general manager Mike Gillis said in a statement. “Carly was a lovely and generous young woman who shared her spirit for life with our players, their spouses and their extended families. We will support the Bragnalo family, Taylor and his entire family in any way we can during this very difficult time.”
What an awful story....

Its a good deal for the B's because its only 3 years, and because they signed him before he turned 35 (he's still 34) they can buy him out much easier
Link
(http://www.boston.com/sports/hockey/bruins/extras/bruins_blog/2009/04/thomas_inks_new.html)
Thomas was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. According to a source in the Bruins front office, part of what was driving the club to get the deal done now is that fact that Thomas will turn 35 years old on April 15.
When a player signs a new deal after his 35th birthday, per the collective bargaining agreement (CBA), although he can be bought out (at a two-thirds reduction in pay), his cap number can not be deleted from the club's salary commitments.
For next year, and for either two or three more years, Thomas will be on Boston's books for some $5 million a year. But because he has signed the deal before age 35, the Bruins have the safeguard -- that they would want to execute it -- to be able to buy him out at any time, cut their dollar commitment by one-third, and be able to spread the payments over twice the remaining term of the deal. It is a significant safeguard.

looking at the remaining schedule buffalohas a chance to catch the rangers (8th) and panthers (9th)
florida lost tonight, rangers didnt play
rangers 89 pts
panthers 87 pts
sabres 85 pts
RANGERS Upcoming Games
Date Opponent Time (ET) Tickets
Saturday, Apr 4 @Bruins 1:00 pm
Tuesday, Apr 7 Canadiens 7:00 pm
Thursday, Apr 9 Flyers 7:00 pm
Sunday, Apr 12 @Flyers 5:00 pm
PANTHERS
Sunday, Apr 5 Penguins 5:00 pm
Tuesday, Apr 7 @Flyers 7:00 pm
Thursday, Apr 9 @Thrashers 7:00 pm
Saturday, Apr 11 Capitals 7:00 pm
SABRES
Saturday, Apr 4 Devils 7:00 pm
Monday, Apr 6 Red Wings 7:00 pm
Wednesday, Apr 8 @Maple Leafs 7:30 pm
Thursday, Apr 9 @Hurricanes 7:00 pm
Saturday, Apr 11 Bruins 4:00 pm
sabres have a game in hand which if they won that game would pull them even with the panthers at 87 pts, 2 behind the rangers, so they may not be too far out of the race
all have tough remaining games but the sabres and panthers are playing hotter than the rangers
weekapaugjz
04-03-2009, 06:49 PM
i don't think the sabres have a chance. if the rangers went 2-2 and the panthers went 3-1, the sabres would have to win 4 outta 5 games left to be tied at 93 points with those teams. i doubt the sabres would be able to against the teams remaining.
my prediction is that rangers and panthers split their last two games and sabres win three putting the rangers in the final spot.

Two time allstar and candidate for the Vezina this year with a league leading 2.11 GAA, .932 SV%.
He's worth it. The Bruins haven't had a goalie last this long on the team in forever.
denko
04-04-2009, 05:51 AM
alright with the all-star shit. carey price started one of those games... what does that tell you?
thomas is not even a career .500 goalie, and this is his FIRST winning season and his second 30 win season and he's in his mid-30's. his previous 3 seasond his GAA were 2.77, 3.11, 2.44. granted, he's having a great year, but he's by no means a spectacular goaltender. he sucks at handling the puck and breaks down at times. i just think thats a lot of money considering broduer makes 5.2

i think tim thomas is fucking solid. who cares if his career win% is under .500, he has been solid the last couple years. i think he will continue at how he is currently playing for at least 2 more years. why not lock him up? some other team desperate for a solid goalie would probably pay him more than that. and how much is rask getting? im betting its under one mil. so the bruins have solid goaltending everynight for just about 6 mil a year. i'd say that's really good.

thats not the point, the guy is a douchbag and his douchbag actions have literally gotten him thrown off teams. then, when your team is fighting for a playoff spot he pulls another shit douchebag move. i dont understand why you're defending him. If Colin White skated up behind Lundvuwqfuykshfist and hit him on the back of the head with his stick you'd be calling for White's head. You're looking at this situation through shitty blueshirt tinted glasses.
Avery's career will not end well. He'll either be the recipient of a cheap shot that results in a career ending injury or he'll get his face broken in half, whether he fights back or not.
There's a huge difference between being an instigator and being a scumbag. Everyone on the planet (except Ranger fans, apparently) knows what category he falls into.

I guarantee you Torts destroyed Avery in the locker room, more likely than not in front of his teammates. John will not put up with chickenshit displays like that and I find it highly unlikely that Avery will be a Ranger very much longer if the FO wants Torts to remain as their head coach.

Good interview with Jack Edwards about ESPN and hockey
PTM: Well how was it going through ESPN through their emergence to the powerhouse they are now?
JE: It changed a lot. It was a lot more fun before Disney bought the company. It was really a lot of fun through ‘91 to ‘95, because the company was building and we had a lot of free reign, and there was a lot of enterprise journalism that was actually really good stuff. But I found that the longer I went in “SportsCenter”, the more formulaic it got and, you know I haven’t worked there for a long time, I haven’t worked at “SportsCenter” since 1999, but I watch it, and it looks to me like it’s just cookie-cutter. It’s just right out of a template, not a whole lot of creativity there.
PTM: Following up, because of that, are you kind of glad that ESPN doesn’t cover hockey anymore?
JE: Well, I think that all you need to know is - for those who wish that hockey was back on ESPN - last Saturday, which was probably the single most amazing night of the NHL season. Just in terms of teams switching places, dramatic things happening, crazy games, that kind of thing.
We went from Toronto to Philadelphia, we were in (Bruins radio play-by-play man) Dave Goucher’s room, having a couple cold ones. Now, the Sweet 16 is going on in college basketball at the same time, the only hockey we saw in the entire sportscast of “SportsCenter” was about 45 seconds of the UNH-North Dakota game, which was the one UNH tied with one-tenth of a second to go, that went into Overtime. That was 56 minutes into the telecast. There was nothing on the NHL in the entire show.
So, for those of you that hope that hockey gets back on ESPN, that’s what you’re gonna’ get. That’s where it belongs in ESPN’s hierarchy, because there are some bozos sitting in the accounting department in a bunker in Burbank, California running Disney, who look at the numbers and completely ignore the passion of hockey fans. They say “Poker gets better ratings because we can attract more compulsive gamblers to the screen than we can passionate hockey fans, so just for the sake of that number, we’re gonna’ run poker instead of hockey. We’re gonna run women’s basketball instead of hockey.”
We saw highlights of the Division II NCAA basketball championship, we didn’t see a single NHL highlight in that entire “SportsCenter”. Case closed.
PTM: Well Jack, you’re gonna’ be a big hero to a lot of hockey fans when this goes up…
JE: I’m not a hero, I’m just telling you the facts. I mean, that’s what it is and you know, this whole idea that hockey will do better if you put it back on ESPN is a delusion. It is completely delusionary. It’s more convenient, certainly. But it’s not going to be better for the sport, because it’s going to be behind golf, it’s going to be behind women’s basketball and, you know, I’m not dissing those sports.
But what I am saying is, if it were my place, if it were my call, I know where the passion is, and I’d rather have 1% of the audience is totally nuts about the sport, than I’m just gonna’ watch it because it’s on. But the people who make the decisions in the accounting department, who see the ratings numbers, are going to go purely on the number. The context of what it means to people has nothing to do with their judgment, and their actions speak much more loudly than their lip service on that.

i don't see any difference between what bertuzzi did, or mcsorely, form what avery did. now sure, the results were much different because thomas wasn't knocked out or put in a coma, BUT the intent was there. he knew what he was doing. and don't give me this "thats his job" fucking bullshit, because if it is he needs to find a new one. and it didn't work anyway, thomas shut them out and now they can look forward to not playing after next week...

Avery flicked his wrists to be a pest. It was a tap. He didn't take a full swing or anything, which means that Avery INTENDED to tap him.
McSorley and Bertuzzi MEANT to fuck some shit up.

Sorry, dis...but I just don't see it. The goaltending is so inconsistent this year that I think it'll be exposed come playoff time. You can't rely on outscoring other teams, sometimes you have to shut them down, and they've been unable to do that all year.

They really need to put Osgood out to pasture...he's been absolutely TERRIBLE this year. He's currently riding a sweet 3.10 GAA and .887 SV%, which would have been great numbers in 1987.
Every year I keep waiting for the Sharks to do something, and they disappoint me. I can't see where they have really done anything to change that.
Calgary is terrible defensively, and if they end up playing Columbus in the first round, I'm taking the Jackets. They're wonderful defensively (as is any Ken Hitchcock team), Steve Mason is a beast (although he may be starting to wear down a little bit), and they are close to possibly getting Derek Brassard back. They're my sleeper team out West, and I think they are going to go really far.

oh well... lets go florida.. if the rags can hold on and fla can win we might be on to something... habs face boston next and assuming FLA can win the next 2 after tonight the habs may lose their spot if the B's can beat them
but everthing has to go right... WIN FLORIDA!
if i had to choose i would pick MTl to not make the playoffs, but i'll be happy if the rangers miss them too.

Isles HAVE to take Tavares. They need a goal scorer. They have plenty of D-Men in the system. The Lightning are the only team that, if they get the #1 pick and the Isles are #2, that the Isles can still get Tavares.

Yes they are, but his contract is front loaded like Vinny's, which means by the end he's only making like 750. And he can be bought out of it at some point as well.
Its a good deal for Detroit, in that you lock him up at a reasonably low cap number for a long time, especially since Zetterberg's 12 year contract starts next year (and he's only making something like a million at the end of it)

I know, dude. Most of the people I know that are going are my fellow Rangers twitterers. It all depends on Reg getting out of work on time for us to get down there.
Also, Brett and I hate each other, but it is in the most loving of ways. Besides, I have to pull for Marty and the Devs in this round 'cause we couldn't do SHIT against the 'Canes this year and I don't wanna have to face them later if either of us makes it past this round of the playoffs. Alright kids...here we go. My annual playoff predictions.
This year is more confusing than most to me because a bunch of the opening round series don't appear to have a team that is that much better than their opponent.
Oh well, here goes nothing...
Eastern Conference
Bruins over the Canadiens in 5. This is the easiest one to pick. Montreal has nothing going for them to make me even think they can compete with Boston, let alone win.
Caps over the Rangers in 6. Even though playoff hockey comes down to goaltending and defense more often than not, I think the Caps have way too much firepower and the Rangers don't have nearly enough.
Hurricanes over the Devils in 6. Carolina impressed the shit out of me the way they played the last month of the season; the Devils not so much. Brodeur is no longer capable of single handedly winning a series, so I'm going with the hot team.
Penguins over the Flyers in 7. The Flyers really petered out midway through the season and the Pens seemed to turn it on, but just because they're such rivals I expect it to be a good, tough series. At least I hope so.
Western Conference
Sharks over Ducks in 6. I think this is finally the year the Sharks put it all together. They look unstoppable.
Blue Jackets over Red Wings in 6. Columbus has finally made the playoffs, and even though no one is giving them a chance (and I hope I'm wrong) the Wings have looked old, slow, and tired the past month or so. They're ripe for an upset.
Canucks over Blues in 6. Yes, St. Louis is hot. In fact, they've been AMAZING since the All Star break. I still think Vancouver has the edge in experience and goal, because Luongo is the best in the league right now.
Calgary over Chicago in 5. I've been very impressed with the play of the Blackhawks this year and I know they're everyone's dark horse pick, but they're way too young and inexperienced. Calgary has been awful since changing the entire chemistry of their team at the trade deadline, but for some reason I see them turning it on and giving the Hawks a whole lot more than they can handle.

HOW DARE YOU CALL YOURSELF A RED WING FAN! GOOD DAY SIR!

two words for you... steve mason... four more... rookie of the year... last three... bye bye wings.
if they can do it, this is the guy that will literally CARRY them through this series.
det at home vs columbus 2-1-0 and 1-1-1 in columbus. close season series, det had 18 GF and col 17.
the det PP is what killed them all year. if they [blue jackets] can stay out of the box i'm giving it to columbus.

They started a promotion last year called "Rock The Red", right around the time the team was battling for a playoff spot and the division to encourage people to wear red to the games.
The red jerseys have been huge sellers. Its almost akin to how the Saddledome has looked in Calgary the last few years (prompting my dad to joke "when youre born in Calgary, they issue you one of those red sweaters"). I did notice that they handed out red towels tonight.

Holy shit the Devils looked great tonight. Cup winning good.
My picks(a little late)
Devils
Capitals
Penguins
Bruins
Ducks
Blue Jackets
Chicago
Blues
I'm not confident in my Capitals pick and my Blue Jackets pick.
The NHL Tweetup in NYC was freaking awesome. There was free beer, free McDonalds, lots of fans of Pens, Devils, and of course, the rangers! I got my picture with Lord Stanley, finally and I won the autographed Marc Staal jersey! Such a good time!
It was a cool experience to have the NHL store all to ourselves and watch all the games with people who are real fans of hockey. A lot of cute hockey chicks, too. Watching the game with all those people made the highs higher and the lows far more nerve wracking. All in all totally great. Surprisingly, an OLD SCHOOL .netter who never posts anymore was there. I tried talking to him about it, but he clearly didn't want to talk about it, but at least he's a rangers fan.
For those interested: a bunch of Rangers fans and twitterers are going to StoutNYC to watch the game on Saturday. If it is even half as enjoyable as tonight was it will be worth it.
Rangers win = hooray, but if Naslund took one more fucking penalty, I'd kill him.

I really, really wanted to go but I didn't get out of work until 5:30, and then I was stuck at the post office til 6:30 getting my taxes done (don't ask)... Plus I was drained, had a really shitty day at work.
Fortunately, the BIG WIN tonight picked me up.

Mudo, i thought you said the Caps were good?
You can't give up 4 goals to a team that can't score (even if on the first goal Antropov tackled Fleischmann behind the play, and Avery then tripped up Green at the blue line which sprung Gomez), and you can't give up 2 goals on the power play against a team with a shit power play.
Here's hoping they rebound.
Who won the Hank guitar?
There was an older gentleman who won the Henk guitar. I didn't even put in for it, because you had to pay $10 an entry for it (It was also a donation for Hockey Fights Cancer (http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=25343)) unfortunately I had no cash and didn't want to leave to go to the ATM.

I have 3 Ovechkin T Shirts, but no Ovechkin jersey...
From what i've seen in the Booth, there's definitely a gigantic amount of Ovechkin jersey's, but there's also a fairly decent amount spread out among Backstrom, Fedorov, Semin and Brashear
I rock the Chris Clark (or the old school Kelly Miller)

I would totally get Nylander, even if he is an old fart.
I've got two blank jerseys. One is a white, one is an old-school alternate.
A lot of places can't letter the alternate anymore, so I might just leave it be. The white may get Avery's name and number on there.
I still see these retro-Richter jerseys and I kinda sorta want. I like wearing old-school jerseys.
Although, I kinda see Hank being on this team for the long haul.
I've got Henk and andrew has Henk, too. Mine is tackle twill and Reg's is the pressed RBK version where it looks like tackletwill. Andrew also has a Richter Navy Liberty jersey.
I'm telling you, if you want it done right: send it to IceJerseys.com. They know their shit. When I got Andrew's Whalers jersey done I took it to a local place, but they told me they were closing so in the future I could send it to IceJerseys and they do a stand up job and the fees are reasonable.
I want a white liberty jersey.

WASHINGTON---Disturbing moment. Nik Antropov, skating in front of Henrik Lundqvist, who was sliding to his left. Antropov's leg seemed to clip Lundqvist's left shoulder. He lay on his stomach, kicking his skates, then skated to the side boards and when he returned to the net, was flexing his left glove arm/shoulder for several minutes.

Why is one of the refs busted open on the Canucks/Blues game? I turned it on towards the end of the 1st. It's a physical as hell game, but I'm wondering what happened to the ref.

Who is in charge at handing out suspensions? If they make a rule and stick to it, it would be nice. Lucic was defending himself. If you see a guy coming at you your gonna put up your hands. How about all the shit after the whistle by Komiserik and Laperriere? The B's are still gonna win cause the only one who can score for the habs is Kovelev.

and most players will put their hands up, but if you have a stick in your hands, you are doing it on purpose.

btu conveniently the elbow/butt end across the face just before (0:45) by schneider goes unnoticed, uncalled. then lapierre comes in to blind side him and he gets tossed. not saying it was right but lets show a little consistency with the fucking suspension calls here. he got him with mostly glove anyway.

He took something like 4 or 5 separate minor penalties tonight, along with a 10 minute misconduct, and managed to take a Mike Richards-esque dive and sucker punched two players (including the goaltender).
Jon Erskine is SO completely inside his head.

The goalie, mind you, who wasn't reacting to him at all. So as he skated away after he was yelling at the goalie in his face, punched him in the side of the head. One of those pussy Avery punches. He's a joke and a disagrace to hockey in my opinion. Bush league shit.

Bruins played very discipline hockey tonight and while playing in Montreal that's a pretty good idea. Their god damn fans were outraged at every minor little hit. They wanted a penalty for everything!

I cant wait for the first Rangers fan reply in here that goes something like this, 'Avery was the innocent victim in all this, he was the one getting punched all game and he just HAD to do something to retaliate. it was perfect, natural hockey. i see nothing wrong with what he did.'
