well my highly anticipated match-up with the sharks has come and gone. the sharks won 5-2 but the score was no indication of how the game went. it was a great game the first 40 but the b's came out flat in the 3rd and it cost them. they had SJ on the ropes for a while. first time the B's lost by more than 2 all season
was nice to see joe thornton again, though he bordered on invisible for most of the night he had one bounce off his skate and in. i honestly felt bad for him when they showed him on the bench a few times. he was so great here in boston and continues to be great in SJ but somewhere the masses just turned on him.
i was making an argument last night for dennis wideman for norris trophy. i think he'll emerge as a top d-man in the league in the next 3 seasons, but it would be hard to not give it to green. leading the nhl in scoring for defensmen, third on the team, averages just over 25mins a night (good for 9th in the league) and on pace to shatter his career highs. not to mention 14 pts in his last 6 games.
one thing about washington is they took advantage of all the shit seasons and drafted really well. i don't know who is scouting for them but they are good.
top 4 scorers on the team all drafted by washington
ovechkin 69 pts - drafted 04 1st rnd number 1 overall
backstrom 55 pts - 06 1st rnd 4th overall
green 47 pts - 04 1st round 29th overall
semin 46 pts - 02 1st rnd 13th overall
89 goals total for the four and that makes up exactly 50% of the teams 178 GF on the season.
I can DEFINITELY buy Wideman for Norris, because he's been INCREDIBLE this year (most of his stats are better than Charas).
But godDAMN is Mike Green great....holy shit....two more goals tonight
Good stuff on the Mike Green Norris trophy debate from JapersRink (http://www.japersrink.com/2009/2/9/753203/assessing-mike-green-s-nor)
And from Mirtle (http://www.fromtherink.com/2009/2/7/752200/is-green-the-nhl-s-best-de)
And from Puck Daddy (http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_daddy/post/With-Green-the-best-defenseman-debate-has-becom?urn=nhl,139971)

I don't get why Thornton gets booed here. The B's are the ones who fucked him over and sent him packing right after signing a new deal.
Wideman is awesome, that deal with St. Louis was a win-win for both teams.

So much good it's doing as I'm watching the Hab and Price getting ripped apart right from the start. 6-1 right now.

And is that for Ovech or Green?! U need to start off a post by giving some other team's player props that appropriately sets you up to talk about your own team's player. Just take a look below how I make it happen.
Wow, that Semin sure can throw the fists! Yet can anyone throw the worse than the Av's Tyler Arnoson!? The name alone strikes fear in an opponent.
I guess I went the other way with this, but you surely get the point. Speaking of pionts, did you ever see Alexander the Great on the PP!?

The Avs will broadcast a period of their game against the Habs in black and white... (http://blogs.denverpost.com/avs/2009/02/10/avs-in-black-and-white-friday-night/)

It sucks that it didn't help them play better
Rangers finally get a win. I was disappointed to see no kookiness from Ovie, but hey, the Rangers won, so I won't complain. Green got his record goal, Brashear is still a goon, Nylander is still the SLOWEST DUDE EVER in a shoot out.
Everyone at the Garden is sick of Wade Redden, the boos and the comments from our section alone were just brutal. When your guys have the puck on a 4+ minute powerplay and a "We Want Avery" chant starts, you know times are tough.
For the record, I was not one of the we want Avery chanters, but I am curious to see how this will play out. All the Avery jerseys are back and people are trying to "show them off" to the GardenVision cameras. Buncha dicks.
Brett, even though I should've been pulling for the Isles to win last night I just want to thank your boys (who I hate one iota less than then Isles) for making them lose.

Maybe it was just me (although the announcers acknowledged it too), but that game took FOREVER to play...almost two hours in and it was just at the 5 minute point of the second period...eesh

Yeah, dude. It was a loooong fucking game. The crazy thing is though, aside from beginning of the first period scraps, there weren't a lot of penalties or other time wasters. It was weird, 'cause there was a good amount of scoring, too.

Been wanting to debate this for a while...
Does Clemmenza's performance in lieu of Brodeur this season lend creedence to the "Brodeur is just a product of the Devils system" detractors?
I would say no, because I think Brodeur's work stands on its own (especially the last few years that he's pretty much carried them by himself) and I never really thought Clemmenza was all that bad (even though he was backing up the Marlies last year)

he's going to be fresh for the postseason no matter what so theres no real need to ease him back in. once he's healthy, he'll be ready to go. he needs to see as much real game action as possible. its his spot, when he gets back into the lineup he'll be playing the vast majority of games again. this is just like the Cassel/Brady argument. Once your stud is healthy your back-up goes back to being just that, a back-up. everyone is thankful for their services but now the number 1 takes over.

At least we agree on one thing, B, the Pats.
Anyhow, that was a good point about Brodeur, but aren't there (or weren't there?) a lot of teams in similar situations? Forgive me, Spoony, if I am forgetful here, but wasn't this sorta what happened with Budaj? Like, he filled in a few seasons (or maybe one) season ago and rocked ass and then went back to being the backup? (Times like this I wish I didn't smoke so much back in the day, then I'd be able to remember something once in my life).

The Budaj thing is pretty different overall. His growth was destroyed by bringing in Theo and not sending him down to the minors bc he was still young. Instead the Av brass kept giving Theo shots at the starting gig over and over again to validate the rediculous contract and the trade overall. Every time Theo sucked ass, while Budaj looked better and better.
It all started with a young Budaj backing up Abby very well in the 05-06 season. Quennville with his amazing ways for destroying goalies somehow killed off Abby's ability over night and then moved him (Pierre Lacroix's last move/awful) for a 5 million dollar trash heap named Theo. Abby was under a million and Theo was hurt and tied to steroid rumors to boot. So yah, great move to pick up a monster contract the Habs were looking to unload just bc Roy worked out so well. One of the top terrible moves of the franchise's history.
So bc the Avs moved their #1 for an injured #1 (ha!), Budaj was thrust into the starting role and he took a record under .500 as a backup at the time, to four over and carried the team into the playoffs. Well guess what, even though Budaj did the work and moved the Avs from 11th to 7th in the standings, Theo somehow got healthy just in time for the playoffs to beat Dallas and get swept by the Ducks in the second round (again no second round wins for theo).
Next in 06-07 Quennville and Lacroix give the nod to Theo and he shits to bed soo often and so bad, eventually they have no choice to give Budaj a shot at the #1. All he does is go 15-0-1 in his 17 games and takes the down and out Avs to the 9th spot with 95 points. They miss the playoff by 1 point and it goes down as the most points ever to not make the playoffs. They did give Theo one game in that span, bc he "matched up so well" against the team, only to get slaughtered even though Budaj was well rested. It wasn't a back to back, in fact Budaj played a bunch in that span. So it didn't make any sense at ALL!
So in rolls the 07-08 season with Budaj slated to be the starter! YEAH! Finally. Oh guess what, he starts a few games, plays well and its over .500 just getting going and Theo comes back from injury and immediately gets over 50% of the starts and loses many. Here we go again and he shits to bed over an over again. Then the new year breaks and Theo suddenly remembers it's a contract year and slips some Arods in his coffee and starts to play well again, but never controlled. He takes the #1 for a while and is the man they give the nod for the playoffs. He wins the first round and get swept in the second, AGAIN! Oh and he was sick with the flu in the 2nd, but did the Avs or Q give Budaj even a single start, nope. Even though he's sure to stay and Theo has a history of being about the money, fame and image? Yep. So guess what, Budaj never started a playoff game and only got garbage time or 5 goals down time due to Theo's skill in the second round.
So he did finally get the #1 nod this year and of course he's been a bench rat way too much for a young goalie in the league. He's now 26 and hasn't seen a good stretch of gams since teh AHL and Hershey in 04-05, his development crushed and of course isn't the quick kid with drive he used to be. He may break out of it, but it's doubtful as he now has issues that were never there with his 5-hole and rebounds that truly show what not playing can do to a young kid, especially goalie.

Fuck you Theo. Fuck you Quennville (u drunk driving clown)! Fuck you Lacroix.

I can't speak for his time in Colorado because I didn't see too much of him there, but Theo actually hasn't been that bad here...he hasn't been a world-beater, but then again, we don't really NEED him to be (we still made the playoffs last year despite having the worst goaltender production of any team in the league not named Tampa Bay). I thought it was a great signing by management, considering that Huet wanted too much money (and went to Chicago anyway, who gave him ridiculous money), and there was really no one else out there...and it was a really smart deal at that, being its only two years, and gives Varlamov and Neuvirth plenty of time to grow up in Hershey and be backups here next year (I doubt they bring back Johnny).
I certainly hope he can stay healthy....with Johnson's injury, there's nothing behind him now but two 20 year olds with two games of NHL experience between them (both from Varlamov)
Wow, sorry to have unleashed the fury. That was one hell of a recap, and I thank you for it. I feel all educated. I actually really like Budaj, I wish I could stay up late enough to watch more Avs games. I dunno what it is, I have this thing for goalies.

Going back to the sweater thing... first, was it intentional that the islanders have the same color as the Mets?
And, I hate to admit it, I like the Isles' sweater.
Here's a list of sweaters I really DIS-like (current only)
- Phoenix Alternate
- Ducks. Fucking BORING
- Thrashers... just a fucking MESS
- Wild - I don't understand the logo. Clean it up a bit, jesus.
- Flames - I liked the old version much better.
- Sabres... I loved the old red and black Sabres Jersey. I think the design of their current jersey is great BUT BUT BUT - the logo is awful.
Here is my solution: Modernize the classic sabres logo and put it in the middle of the currently designed jersey. Problem solved, no more slug.
- Rangers (hear me out... the Rangers look is classic, but I think it's the only jersey in the NHL that hasn't been updated at all.)
What really grinds my gears is that the Rangers still have their alternate logo in use but haven't used an alternate jersey since I can remember.
BRING BACK THE ALTERNATE. That jersey rocks. Especially the white alternate.
- Kings - great color scheme, great design - and again, the logo is a fucking mess. However, the third jersey logo gets a pass. I like that.
- Flyers... just a mess. Needs a modernizing with someoone who has half a brain.
- Devils - meh. I think the logo needs some work. I could probably design a killer alternate for it.

I don't mind the sabres ones they have grown on me. The logo is lame. I really like their third unis.
I agree with you on most of the other ones except the rangers. I've always liked theirs.
As for the best: canadians, bruins, wings, and for some reason I love the new capitals ones.

Matty: It's a bear head made out of the landscape of Minnesota. Some trees, a moon, a river, a shooting star, etc. Personally, the Wild is probably my favorite logo in all the NHL.
As for the Rangers I say bring back the WHITE liberty jerseys, those rocked and bring back the 1978 vintage jersey:

Seriously though, the jersey rocks and I kind of dig the cartoon-y font they used on it, too. Very TO. (Edit: yes, I realize the font on my jersey isn't correct. Andrew's brother, and Isles fan, handled the secret naming and numbering of the jersey so I have to get a new one.)

The Penguins continue to baffle me. Second tier teams seem to cause more problems than those in the upper echelon of either division or conference. We just got Gonchar back, but I'm beginning to doubt our playoff chances. What's going on? Oh, I forgot, Crosby is a pussy and in the pocket of the NHL, so all is fine. Oh, and he's overrated. Plus he flops. Did I cover all bases for everyone?

Wow, bitter guy! I can't speak for others, but once Crosby was voted biggest crybaby in the NHL I decided I wasn't alone so I didn't have to harp on it anymore.
The Rangers seem to have this problem with teams that shouldn't be a threat, too. At least P'burg is only dealing with it for one season. This is a perpetual problem for the Rangers.

You will get rid of Tom Renney whose only got 2 faults as far as I can see are 1) not playing Prucha when he's earned at least a point every time you've played him and 2) your power play stinks on ice as is the case. Yet, Glen Saether is fucking untouchable?!?! this is my problem with them
the rangers went out and signed a guy that averages 15 goals a season (gomez) to $8m a year,
drury, middle of the road guy at best $7.1m
wade redden currently -10! $8m
rosival currently -14 $7m
not one player has over 20 goals yet, in fact ovechkin alone has more goals the the four highest paid skaters on the team. the problem isn't the coaching, its the dicks that signed these guys thinking they would magically start to play beyond their ability.
the problem isn't the coaching, its the dicks that signed these guys thinking they would magically start to play beyond their ability.
Precisely my point. I love Tom Renney, seriously, his lil Canadian laugh, his awful mixing of plaid suits and striped shirts and ties. Plus I think he's remained level headed through the highs and the lows.
My beef is with Glen Sather. I don't give two shits what he did with Edmonton, he's not doing it with the NYR so he can eat a dick. The problem is he's like superBFF with Dolan, the owner of the Rangers thereby making him untouchable. Someone's head will have to roll for this horrendous-ness and since it "can't" be Sather, it will likely be Renney which pisses me off. Sather has made a lot of good choices in drafts, but then he screws it all up by trading away the good, young, talent, to bring in douches like Kalinin, Redden, and to keep crap like Roszival around. Get rid of these losers!
I have a feeling that before the trade deadline we'll be getting rid of Prucha which breaks my heart hardcore. In addition to my teen girl squad "he's cute" reason for liking him, the kids got a hell of a heart and when he does get the chance to actually play has produced points in every game (some of those points he actually scored goals on) yet he never gets played. He had a horrible second season, I'll cop to that, but give the guy a freaking chance. All he wants to do is play hockey, the fans really dig him, let him lose his spot in the roster rather than make him try to earn it by never playing.
As for Mara, he's half of our defense that is good (only he and Staal are decent IMO and Stall has been lukewarm as of late) with him injured this is just going to get worse. I keep telling myself "it's almost March" which is when the boys usually get out of this funk they come into for February, but this year I am seriously doubting it. :glurps:

Former Canadiens coach Jean Perron yesterday singled out three players — Chris Higgins, Carey Price and Sergei Kostitsyn — as particularly guilty of enjoying life too much these days. (My Google translation calls it "too on the 'party.'")

EDIT: (http://www.japersrink.com/2009/2/18/762246/game-day-habs-caps)
A popular pick to win the East back in the Fall, the Habs have won just three of their last thirteen games and have dropped to fifth in the Conference, seemingly challenging the Rangers to see who can drop out of the top eight quicker. Their star goalie is 2-7-0/4.00/.863 in his last nine starts (and 0-2-0/6.00/.824 in his last two), they have more than $10 million of salary on injured reserve, and they've just told their leading scorer of a season ago that they won't be needing his services for the next couple of games (this despite scoring just two goals in five of their last six outings). Oh, and in case you hadn't heard, the Canadiens are currently celebrating their centennial season (and celebrating heartily, at that).

Uh Oh!!
Betcha won't hear this in the mainstream media!
NBA Borrows 175 million dollars to help 15 strugglin' franchises (http://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/article/61537)
The NBA is set to borrow $175 million Feb. 26, marking one of the first league financings since the implosion of the credit markets last fall.
The money, which will be available to 15 teams, supplements an existing $1.7 billion leaguewide credit facility that uses the NBA’s media contracts as collateral to secure loans for the clubs. The NBA surveyed its teams, and 15 responded they would like to tap into the new borrowing.
While the league said it is pleased to borrow in an extremely illiquid credit market, the deal came at a cost, with interest rates up to 8.27 percent, hammering home the notion that the era of cheap money in sports is over. The 15 teams can use the money for any purpose, but covering operating losses may be high on the list.
“In this economic environment, it’s tremendous that the league can place such a facility,” said Alex Martins, chief operating officer of the Orlando Magic, which plans to borrow from the new debt. “It certainly helps us bridge the time period between now and when we move into our new events center in 2010. We’ve been operating at a $15 [million] to $20 million [annual] loss over the past half-dozen years, so it helps us.”
If the NHL had done this, talking heads would be declaring the end of the league

The guy from JapersRink came up with Red Jesus, so I can't claim credit for it unfortunately.
I talked to my dad this morning, and he was just about to watch the replay of the game on OnDemand. He hasn't seen the goal yet so i'm gonna call him back to get his reaction.
Coach Boudreau thinks its better than "The Goal" against Phoenix, and while I think that goal is still better, this one is closer than you might think, between the crazy pass to himself while skating backward, combined with the drive to net AND scoring while being tackled/sliding on his rear end.
What else can I say about him? In following the Caps for over 20 years, we've NEVER had a guy like him. It was always guys like him on other teams coming to town, and its really amazing to think the Franchise has been around 35 years, and has never had a "superstar". I'm just trying to enjoy every minute of the Ovi Era that I can.

Exactly right. In fact, the goal part is actually weak and half the reason the Habs are falling so bad. Just an AWFUL goal as O was down and Price overplayed to the shot to the far post instead of making the simple play of staying square to the puck. If O was up I'd understand his play a little more, but in this case he wasn't and had only the short side to shoot at.

Well not this time bc they actually stepped up against that piece of shit Theo and his fucking mouth. Seriously Theo, you're going to open your mouth with those numbers? Sorry Theo, it's the team in front of you that lands those wins, not your 2.81 GAA and .899 save percentage!
One guy on the Avs who was the most pissed about his comments was Adam Foote. How did he respond? The aging defensive minded D-man only went out there and scored the game-winner and added an assist on his way to a plus 4 night in a 4-1 win.
How did Theo fare you ask? A nice .840 save percentage and lost to a waiver wire pickup on the last place Western Conf team. Oh and "red jesus" was a 0 with a -1 as his only stat of notice.
Where are the over-the-top red jesus comments? I actually used to like the Caps Mudo, but you're playing the role of a Dallas fan of late, and getting Theo already hurt your team's case in my eyes. I hope you like terrible second round playoff losses bc Theo is a specialist in that area. I hope you have a backup to replace Johnson, bc if your brass is smart enough, you'll see Theo sit eventually in the playoffs.

I know a certain shitty last place team in the West who found it easy to contain their offense. Right mudo!? Yah, I'm not HUGE on Thomas but he's had a very good year in 07-08 followed by a now great year thus far in 08-09. Sorry, sure he has to prove himself in the playoffs to be considered top level in the league, BUT he surely isn't what denko makes him out to be either. I'd take him in a second, but I'd rather Rask due to his future. Still, you can't even THINK about using Rask over either goalie Boston now has for this year's playoff run. It's Thomas all the way unless he gets banged up and Fernandez moves in. Even in the recent losses, Thomas was very good and lost due to the Bruins putting up zeros.
Is it wrong that I want to throw a molotov cocktail at John Amarante's shitty rug?

Eh....as soon as I saw the Colorado game coming up on the schedule I marked it up as a loss. Know why?
We've lost 5 games at home this year...4 of those have been to mediocre Western Conference opponents (Edmonton, Los Angeles, Columbus, Colorado). All those teams (especially the last 3) play an extremely tight, conservative, defensive oriented game, and once you get down a goal to them, they clam up tighter than a nun's vagina. Colorado went up 2-1 in that game Friday, and IMMEDIATELY spent the rest of the game trapping. No one on DC was pleased with the effort put forth in the game (they admitted it was probably the worst game they've played all year) and Coach Boudreau put them through a pretty hard bag skate saturday.
This team has a habit of playing down to its competition...they've beaten team Detroit when they came here, Boston and New Jersey and Pittsburgh and Montreal multiple times but then they'll turn around and lose to teams like the ones above.
Jose Theodore is NOT the problem btw...since the December 23rd game against the Rangers (where he was pulled briefly) as going into Friday's game he was 14-4-2 with a 2.39 goals against average, and .915 save percentage in his last 20 games.
The only team in the East that really reminds me of those mediocre Western teams that we've had so much trouble against is Florida (no coincidence that they are the only other team we've lost to at the Booth), and I want NO PART OF THEM in the playoffs.
As far as yesterday's game goes, it was nice (as it always is) to beat Pittsburgh, but I care more about beating Philadelphia tuesday...that's a much bigger game.
Sounds like there is a pretty solid contingent of Pens fans in Washington today.
There's always a lot of them, but it was decidedly fewer on this occaision...they've finally gotten wise and stopped selling them tickets there (much like they don't sell tickets there to out of towners). They used to come down in freaking busloads.

Why? Cole hasn't been the same since his neck injury, and has a 4 million dollar hit and becomes a UFA after this year. You get a good D prospect in Lashoff (who's only 21) and Sobotka's only 20.
The guy's got 24 points in 60 games with a 4 million dollar cap hit... If anything, the Oilers should be wearing a gun and a mask in this deal.

This has turned into a big thing here in B-lo. One of our local sportswriters basically called the entire team a bunch of pussies for not punching Gomez in the mouth or running Henrik. The point he was trying to make was that in order to do anything more than a forst round bow out, a team needs to demonstrate some grit, something that the Sabres lack.
On the one hand, I've never seen Gomez do anything to intentionally hurt a player, but on the other, someone drops your goalie behind the net- he gets a mouthful of chicklets. End of story.
The team was up 3-0 and the blueshirts had nothing going. A bloodied Gomez maw would have gone a long way towards shaking the soft image I think the team has. I don'e think there is a team in the league who would shy away from a first round draw against the Sabes.

Apples and Oranges, or in this case, comparing Max Patkin and Michael Jordan. Lecavalier was an 18 year old kid that was saddled with huge expectations, and had drastically underperformed to that point. Avery's a cat who's got himself run out of 3 franchises (LA, Detroit, Dallas), and is generally regarded as a cancer. If Avery put up Ovi or Malkin-like numbers, it'd be a different case, but he's not that type of player.
To my knowledge Vinny never ripped French Canada, called someone's girl friend his "sloppy seconds", waved his stick like a maniac at Martin Brodeur, poisoned his own locker room repeatedly, and never gave Bruce Boudreau "the three longest days of my life" when he was coaching him in Manchester.
I just don't see how you can just rip Avery like that, and then all of a sudden want him on your team...its a VASTLY different situation from calling out an underperforming superstar

You can't compare the Brodeur thing with his other antics. You may not like it, but it was innovative as hell.
As for the Elisha thing... he was trying to get into Phaneuf's head. It was ill-advised but I don't think he had any idea it would backfire that much. Probably not the best idea for a guy who had less than 20 games with a new team.
Do you think Torts had any INKLING that he'd be coaching Avery after he made that statement? At the time, the Rangers were doing very well and the concept of Avery being on the Rangers again wasn't in the equation.
It's kind of like me picking on Sheepy in 2000 on OA.com. Do you think I had any idea I'd end up marrying his sister?

Guess I'm impatient, I hadn't a clue how young those guys on Boston were. Plus I'm losing patience with our own young core, the only players who haven't been dissapointing are Horcoff, Hemsky and Roli.

I think Avery is Patkin, because the main weapon he brings to a team is being "Avery". He's not going to score 50 goals, and he's not some elite defensive specialist. The reason he's being paid 4 million dollars a year (which is ludicrous seeing as he's never EVER had over 20 goals or even 40 points) is to be "Avery". It raises alarm bells from me when I hear him talking about "the old Sean" because that means if I'm the Rangers, I'm being saddled with a 4 million dollar a year contract with a shrinking salary cap for a guy who can't even score 20 goals, and won't/can't fulfill his role

...my understanding was because of the waiver deal, the Rangers were only paying a fraction of the salary.
Just looked. The Rangers would be paying Avery 2 million dollars, not 4. And I think Dallas is picking some of that up too.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/hockey/nhl/02/07/avery.waivers.ap/
Explanation:
Avery cleared waivers, so no team will have to pay his full salary.
Avery was assigned to the Wolfpack. So he's still getting paid by Dallas, as he is Stars property.
After that, Avery goes on waivers again. Rangers would then claim him for half his contract.
EDIT: If Avery is going to the Rangers, it's gotta happen soon. 3/4 is the trade deadline and then Avery isn't eligible for the playoffs.

Are you absolutely sure about that? Do you have a link or something? It doesn't sound right. Considering there's nothing in this deal to benefit the Rangers outside of taking Avery off Dallas' hands, this deal sounds weird unless Dallas is picking up some of the costs.
EDIT: I just looked at the SI article again. The last paragraph says "half his remaining CONTRACT".
Not half of his salary this year. It means the Rangers would be getting him at half price.
Freitag
02-25-2009, 05:30 AM
Once Avery shows he's physically ready to return to the NHL, the Stars could recall him, exposing him to reentry waivers, at which point teams could claim him at half price, with Dallas on the hook for the other half of Avery's contract, a four-year, $15.5 million deal signed in July. Teams below the Rangers in the league standings would have first crack at claiming Avery, and while it's unlikely they'd be undercut, there are no guarantees.
In other words:
Teams just can't put contracted players on waivers to get rid of them. (See Ramirez, Manny) Unlike football, NHL contracts are guaranteed money, just like baseball and basketball. The team who signed him just can't get rid of him without some sort of financial penalty. It's just that usually, players who are waived are usually scrubs who don't make a lot of money, so it's no big deal.
So basically, Avery is going to get all the money that Dallas signed him for, unless he agrees to a buyout. As I understand it, Dallas is on the hook for half his salary, and the Rangers are on the hook for the other. I'm not sure what the cap implications are.

Thanks for clarifying that.
But even if they're paying half of that, 2 million is still wayyy to much to pay for him (Avery's hit becomes 4 next year, but as you specified, Dallas is on the hook for half of that), especially when they're so loaded with massive contracts. Gomez, Drury, Redden and Roszival make 26 million between them next year, plus Dubinsky, Dawes, Callahan, Prucha, Korpikoski, and Zherdev are all RFAs after this year (and Mara's a UFA, as is Valiquette). Staal and Girardi are RFAs after next year.
And there's also everyone and their mother talking about how either the cap will either stay where it is now next year, or even be reduced.

At the end of each bio I was surprised there wasn’t a eHarmony link so they could match the dudes with someone who looks like their sister and then they could get married and talk about their dog and how they love doing Sudoku together for a Friday night date. No really I “get” the concept of catering the game to the ladies but for those of us who already are fans, it feels like a smack in the face. I understand the need for chicks to feel some comfort in the sport. But the eye candy pics and ridiculously girlie wallpapers. I am half surprised the site doesn’t have sparkles and My Little Pony. Michael Rosizval in probably the most homosexual hockey fight I've ever seen in my entire life.

Personally, I don't see an issue with it. It's a great marketing scheme, and it's no different than men with Danica Patrick, Gina Carano, or the WWE Divas.
I previously didn't know this existed before this post. Am I offended by it, no? Do I think it's obnoxious, yeah, kind of. I liken it to the girls with the pink jerseys (I hate these for ANY sport) and all the fucking Teen Girl Squad chicks who come to the game in their Avery, Henk, or Prucha jerseys 'cause they're hot (yes, I know I have a Lundqvist jersey and that I may or may not secretly be in love with him). I feel protective because I don't want to lose my seats to teenyboppers.
Guess what? The guys don't look all pretty and coiffed while they're playing hockey, they wear protective gear and their "rugged good looks" are obscured. There is quite possibly no worse smell than the "hockey" smell (you know, that one that lingers on your body even after a shower 'cause it is sweat mixing with the funk still on your equipment).
Sure, it's a good way to get the chicks interested in the game and if it actually helps to get more girls without mullets genuinely interested in hockey I'm for it. The best thing I can say for this site is the "Hockey 101" section will help and I know it was something I could've used back in the day. I think the real fans of hockey who are female (like myself and Mudo's chick) will likely ignore this kind of garbage and still go to the regular haunts for our hockey info. The truth of the matter is a site like this isn't geared towards us anyhow. Athletes will always be sex symbols and dollars and attention coming to the game will help to keep it around so I can't knock it for that.
My husband's profession is sports marketing for one a world renowned major sporting event, so I asked him for his thoughts on it. He notes that it is making the effort to bring new business and attention to the game which can be hard to do. The intentions were well placed, but the execution may have gotten a little jumbled. He said it's no better or no worse than Lundqvists "Fire & Ice" spread in Page Six magazine here in NY. He noted the function of the site is to sell tickets (there are multiple links to ticket sales on each page) and so in that respect it does a nice job.

My goalie turned me onto this: you can wash your equipment in a front load washer and it doesn't tear your shit up. Usually takes 2 loads- I do shin guard, shoulder pads and elbow pads in one load and gloves and pants in the second. Works great, just takes a bit of time to dry. Still haven't gotten all of the stink out, but getting better every wash.
Course, I'll probably be posting in six months that I totally fucked up my front load, but for now it is working.
