This makes me a lil sad, but it's like the Circle of hockey life for him...I think he's largely gonna be remembered as a Red Wing, though.

OG!
I'm originally from CT so I felt obligated to bring that up, but it just makes me sad. When you go to Wolfpack games they have all the old whalers banners hanging still. It is such a small arena for a former NHL team. I think I have a pic of it around here somewhere.

Not sure if this was mentioned in this thread or not, but apparently New Line Cinema commissioned a screenplay about Sean Avery's "double life". (http://www.newsweek.com/id/165674)
So Basically, it's the Cutting Edge Wears Prada.
I can already see it now:
He's kicked out of the league, he starts his own fashion line, and the movie ends with him getting a contract to design the league's uniforms.

Since you have a softspot for vintage NHL stuff, I saw a Jets hat at the Coyotes game I went to... I almost got it... but it had a velcro strap...

Brilliant, though I was hoping for more of a youngbloods tie in, Cutting Edge is one of my faves (c'mon, I'm a girl...)

I'm actually developing the movie in my head.
The movie begins with him playing hockey in college, but he's secretly sketching designs. He has a whole facade about who the "real" him is - the smartmouthed asshole or the sensitive, artistic guy.
Since saying "sloppy seconds" isn't believable by Hollywood standards, I would say that he's kicked out of the league for pictures of a Hollywood Starlet (think a Lohan type) using the league's championship trophy as a sex toy on the day he has possession of it and him releasing the pictures as payback after she cheats on him.
The league freaks out, of course, and his teammates overreact, because she left him for the team's captain.
He has a college degree, and a bit of infamy, so he takes a job blogging about the league at a sports site. (Think Deadspin - owned by Gawker - who also has a fashion blog)
His designs are discovered, and he wears a disguise as a gay fashion designer (think a look like Karl Lagerfeld) to get his designs out while still trying to get back into the league.
Are you with me so far?

I'll see if Racki is available.
i don't know, after the mustangs tossed him from camp he looks right at home with the bombers... could be a tough sell.
phil kessel (T4th in league with 24G and leads bruins)out for about a month with mono.
so tonight against the habs the bruins are down:
fernandez
bergeron
lucic
ference
kessel
sturm
possibly ward, not sure.
the depth of the bruins will be tested for sure. the guys they have called up (hunwick, lashoff, st. pierre, ect) have reall stepped up. look for this to not slow the B's down at all.
and i'll say it again, david krejci...

I'm meeting up with with a couple of DC friends to watch the Caps play Oilers. I can't wait to see Ovechkin but I will be supporting the Oilers even though I am a Habs fans. A few years ago when I lived in DC, the fans were so pathetic here that it was depressing watching the Caps even when I was rooting for the other team. I'm looking forward to seeing more home support for the Caps tonight.

I get to see Rangers vs. Caps at MSG and it will be my first time seeing Ovie and I can't wait for it. Of course I hope the Rangers will win that game, but you bet your ass I'm gonna hope for a crazy Ovie goal or two.

The Caps dominated the play early, yet still gave up a goal
I says to my chick, "if we give up another goal here to make it 2-0, we're going back to watching a movie" because it was starting to eerily resemble the Columbus game from Friday (which I attended, and of course, the Caps got shut out)
About 3 minutes later....

i wouldn't worry too much, the pens have been tanking as of late, like 5 wins in the last 16 games or something. the caps, aside from last night have been red hot. just hope the penguins don't carry the momentum from last nights big come from behind win into tonight.
and please, keep playing the tiny violin for my bruins. it worked last night.

No kidding....seen the video of Thomas knocking Kostitsyn on his ass? High comedy
Link...because my work blocks youtube (http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_daddy/post/Video-Tim-Thomas-stands-up-for-teammate-drops-?urn=nhl,134285)
We'll see you guys saturday
I've been conditioned over the years to NEVER feel optimistic about the Caps...everytime I do, they go right back into the crapper. My poor girlfriend is just becoming a Caps fan, and I feel like she has no idea what's in store for her in terms of futility and depression.
I was at the game last year where Backy put the puck in our own net to win the game for Pittsburgh, and it was one of the single most depressing moments of my entire life.

I'm glad Thomas did that, Kostitsyn just boarded Ward right after Ward was limp from blocking a shot. Kostitsyn got a five minute major and Ward had to leave the game.
That was the best game I've watched all season from start to finish.

i'm still waiting for the epic donnybrook that just seems more and more inevitable every time those two clubs meet. to be honest i think the habs are too pussy to really throw down with boston. fucking komisarek likes to get tough with guys like savard and ference but wants nothing to do with guys like lucic or thornton. i can't even put into words my hatred for the canadiens.
thomas dropping kostitsyn was great, and he's lucky thomas got to him before chara did thats for sure. in my honest opinion, and i watched a few times, ward played that up big time.
el mudo... as far as riding high only to be heartbroken i, and fallon i'm sure, know the feeling being bruins fans the last few years. they would have a great 10 game run and shit the bed the next 20 or get within striking distance and lie down. terrible to live through. i have been blown away this year by their play, all four lines are contributing and it seems like everyone is on the same page and its great to watch. you'll see soon enough. although, the caps are one of the few to beat boston this year. lets see if they can do it again.

Drunk on success, NHL flots Rose Bowl, Vegas Winter Classic (http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_daddy/post/Drunk-on-success-NHL-floats-Rose-Bowl-Vegas-Wi?urn=nhl%2C134422). (Thanks to one of my friend's facebook accounts).
Perhaps it is dumb planning like this that gets the league into financial troubles. I realize nothing concrete here, but seriously, outdoor hockey in the fucking desert? I think the WC should always be held somewhere that there is a possibility of snow during the game. I also think that there should always be and original six involved, but Pens vs. Buffalo was pretty entertaining two years ago.
Also, I love that the announcer in the Thomas clip used the word donnybrook. It evokes such an image for me and I just totally dug it.

the annoucer in the thomas clip is named jack edwards, he is the regular bruins announcer and you should here him when he's not doind nation broadcasts. the guy get WAY into it with these dennis miller monday night football-esque references. good stuff.
by the looks of the box score the caps gave the penguins a sound thrashing last night, and NHL.com reported crosby absent from practice today, along witht he othe r2 injured last night... what the hell happened?

I guess the NHL had an outdoor game a while ago in Vegas when The Great One was still on the Kings. It's a bad idea if you want real hockey fans to show up and have a good atmosphere.

The Rangers and Kings played an outdoor game in Vegas about 15-20 years ago (http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9D0CE3DD133AF93AA1575AC0A9679582 60)..it can be done. Although I like the idea of New York/Boston in Fenway or Washington/Pittsburgh at PNC Park or Nationals Stadium a lot more
one of the pens took a slapshot to the face
That was Rob Scuderi. Max Talbot also left early in the game, and Kris LeTang took a slapper off the ankle
Crosby got tangled up with Stecks late in the 3rd and appeared to hurt his foot
Crosby went to the bench late in the third period appearing to be in a lot of pain and favoring his left leg after he got tangled with Washington center David Steckel and the two went into the boards. He later left the game.
"I don't think its too bad," Crosby said afterward. "W'll see tomorrow.
"I haven't seen [the replay], but it felt pretty bad. Hopefully, all goes well."

it was def a big hit! worth a kneeing penalty i'm not sure. i didn't see any intent on ovechkins part. he went in to staple wideman and at the last minute wideman went to cut right and Ov caught his knee. initially wideman looked hurt but he was right back out in the third.
that ovechkin is unbelievable, fast, great shot, got the moves and he's fucking fearless. why he is not starting the allstar game is beyond me, and the fact that carey fucking price is a starter and semin didn't even make it is just ridiculous, or even green for that matter. i hope they reconsider the voting process for next season.

Today's performance was abysmal at best. I've noticed it against other teams, too, but it seems to me that the calls in any game against the Pens are always skewed. No matter who the opponent, the calls are just like blind eyes turned by the refs for the Pens and stretches of calls made against the opposition. It's angering.
Also, the next game of the week on NBC is Wings vs Pens. Seriously, NHL, stop sucking Pittsburgh off, it's getting old. I'd rather watch the Caps every time, at least they're exciting to watch, or what about more west coast teams. The sharks? For real?
Apparently NBC now chooses one player per game and has a camera that follows them at all times unless they're on the bench, then they switch to another "star" player, bet you can't guess who today's followed player was....

Someone on FARK brought this up, and now I'm thinking about it too... isn't the rosebowl kind of... occupied... on New Year's Day? Something about a football game?
The Rose Bowl is the BCS Championship game next year, so if the trend of extending the BCS bowl by several days every year continues, it will be played sometime in February 2010...

They still play the actual Rose Bowl on Jan 1. They added another BCS Game a few years ago, or rather, just designate the National Title game as a completely separate entity that's held at one of the BCS sites (this year for exampe, they played both the Orange Bowl itself and the National Title game at the Orange Bowl site)
Still a dumb idea to put it at the Rose Bowl. I think it works MUCH better at a baseball field for logistics (theyre not playing at the time, so you can plan it a lot better and take more time to put up the ice and work on it) and football stadiums are just too big.

i'm not a big conspiracy guy, but i did question the call for a penalty shot when they gave it to crosby. i've seen that same play one hundred times and it always results in a hooking minor, in that case it would have given the pens a 5 on 3, but no way was that worthy of a penalty shot.
i'm sure it will be the highly hyped and much anticipated rematch of last years finals, can't say i disagree with NBC for airing that game, and in their defense, thats the only game anyone wants to see that day.
fucking bruins, lost again today after an epic comeback late in the third. they played like shit all day too, i think the injuries are finally catching up with them.

Good point, little details like this escape me sometimes. I just get so riled up. Maybe it is also 'cause I am in the north east that it happens to be the game of the week, but I thought at some points there were different games airing in different markets, no? I guess I would like to see some other other good teams out there. I feel like NBC only plays the same teams: Pittsburg, NYR, Boston, Detroit, again could all be a regional market thing.

NHL Attendance/TV Figures for the First Half of the season are out (http://www.sportsbusinessjournal.com/article/61172)
The Good:
The league increased its attendance in part because 10 of its clubs played to 100 percent capacity during the first half of the season. It also benefited from significant increases in average reported attendance in Chicago, Washington and Boston.
The Chicago Blackhawks led all teams in attendance, averaging 21,592 (excluding the game at Wrigley Field on Jan. 1). That made for a league-high 42 percent increase in reported attendance. The team also led the league in paid attendance increases, with a jump of more than 60 percent from 2007-08, according to league sources.
The success in Chicago comes in Rocky Wirtz’s first complete season as chairman of the team. After taking over the club in October 2007 after his father’s death, Wirtz brought in former Cubs President John McDonough, who overhauled the front office and reinvigorated the franchise with new marketing and locally televised games.
“A strong Chicago market with fan interest is important to the league, and (the Blackhawks’) ability to reconnect with their fan base, which never left, has been nothing short of amazing,” Daly said. “They’re hitting on all cylinders and the fans have embraced what they bring to the rink every night.”
The Washington Capitals saw attendance increase 29.8 percent to an average of 17,959, and as of Jan. 9, the team had increased its paid attendance by 37 percent, putting it in the top 10 in paid admissions, according to league sources. The Boston Bruins increased average attendance 12.3 percent to 16,692.
National and local TV ratings also improved compared with the midway mark in 2007-08. U.S. broadcaster Versus saw total viewers increase to an average of 310,732 through 31 games, compared to 265,314 over the same period in 2007-08. NBC benefited from the tune-in of more than 4.4 million for the 2009 Winter Classic, making it the most-viewed NHL regular-season game in 34 years and drawing a 2.5 rating and 5 share.
Ratings also increased in Canada where the CBC averaged 868,000 viewers a game through 34 telecasts. That number is up from 850,000 viewers a game in 2007-08 but down from 1 million viewers in 2006-07. TSN averaged 483,000 viewers, a 7.2 percent increase, and RDS averaged 648,000 viewers, a 31 percent increase.
Local ratings rose in 15 of 22 markets in the U.S. , according to Nielsen data obtained by sources. (The Nashville Predators and Carolina Hurricanes ratings weren’t available.) The Buffalo Sabres led the league with an 8.87 average local rating per game, and the Pittsburgh Penguins were the second highest with a 6.14 average.
The Bad:
The league’s success in those markets was partly offset by low attendance elsewhere. Five teams reported average attendance below 15,000 — the New York Islanders, Columbus Blue Jackets, Atlanta Thrashers, Nashville Predators and Phoenix Coyotes. The Islanders averaged a league-low 13,462. The other four teams averaged between 14,000 and 15,000 a game.
The Florida Panthers averaged a league-low 0.15 local rating, while the Islanders had a 0.17 average.
Not good news for the Isles on any front, especially when the team has scheduled a pre season game in Kansas City (http://www.newsday.com/sports/hockey/islanders/ny-spifans166000649jan16,0,7078017.story)

The Coyotes need to change their name back to the Jets and go back to Winnipeg.
Hockey doesn't belong in the south. If the Thrashers or Predators were in Trail, BC or Regina or St. John's, they would have no problem selling far more than 15,000. I don't know why the NHL feels it needs to push hockey on Americans. For the original six cities or anywhere in the US where the teams are doing well, fine. But why do they think Atlanta or Memphis needs hockey? Move those teams to Canada.

I was staying at the Disneyland hotel during the playoffs between the Ducks and Oilers a couple of years ago. The place was crawling with Oilers fans who either traveled down for the games or who were transplanted Canadians. The bars were packed with Oilers fans and hardly anyone cheered when the Ducks scored. No one in SoCal gave a shit about the Ducks besides a relatively small number of fans. It was barely covered in the papers or local news.
My family is from Trail BC and hockey is religion there. If they had an NHL team, they would sell out for years to come. All of eastern BC and southwestern Alberta would come to watch the games. It is just the indifference to hockey in these southern and California markets that annoys me.

That truly was a pathetic showing. I used to look forward to this every year, but I sat there bored to tears tonight.
I was also a bit annoyed that they took away the team aspect of the skills competition. Every year as far as I can remember, there were points awarded to each team based on the individual performances. Why they all of a sudden decided to take that away is beyond me.

so ovechkin is a right handed shot and he went down with two sticks and shot left? i kinda missed what was going on because i was too focused on the hat and avery glasses, and the fact he had malkin working for him on that bit. as bad as it was that was the highlight of that whole shit show of a contest.

Isn't it crazy? All Bettman has done in his tenure is make the game more and more sterile and watered it down with the idiotic expansion.
There was a time in my life when I used to eat, sleep, shit, and breathe hockey, but now I've become a casual fan and really only get into it at playoff time. It's sad.

Ovie impressed me. Growing up a Ranger fan, I was kind of programmed to hate the Russian players because the first Russian players were on the Devils and they were old, grumpy looking guys. No personality.
I had only seen Ovie play when the Rangers played the Caps, so I didn't see a lot of his personality until what Versus showed last night, i was impressed.
Another thing.
I had posted elsewhere that for some reason, the players on the Yankees who don't speak English never learn. So I kind of got used to the fact of foreign players not speaking English OR speaking it broken and heavily accented.
One of my memories when the Rangers won the Cup was Alexei Kovalev trying his damndest in broken English to celebrate the Cup, and it came out like a 3 year old trying to talk, something like "No more 1940, yayyyyyy!"
So imagine my surprise when Kovalev is interviewed by Versus last night and starts speaking flawless, near un-accented English. Holy shit, I'm old.

Its about money...thats big time, big time sponsor money (the ASG and its ilk are about SPONSORS first and foremost), and while it sucks, its part of the game
I watched about 5 mins of the game (and that was because I was finishing up building a bookcase and needed background noise...lingered long enough to see Ovi's first goal).
I am feeling good about the second half of the season (www.japersrink.com)
But there are games to be played between now and then - 34, to be exact - and the schedule is quite favorable for the Caps. How favorable? Using opponents' winning percentage as the metric, the Caps have the easiest remaining schedule in the NHL - a dozen of the 34 games left (35%) are against teams which would have a ping pong ball in the lottery if the season ended tomorrow.
The Caps also have 18 home games left, only leave the Eastern time zone once (and that's a trip to Nashville... which is closer to D.C. than two of the Caps' four Southeast Division foes and just an hour behind Eastern Standard Time), and have just four sets of back-to-back games (they've played nine such sets already this season). The team does have a five game road trip in March that will take them to each of the other Southeast barns and Toronto, but from mid-February through early March they have a string of nine out of ten games played at home (where, of course, they're 19-3-1, the fewest home losses of any team in the East).

Oh my gosh! Reg totally lied to me then 'cause he was the one who told me about the whole 35 thing! Lundqvist, who has slumped lately with four or more goals allowed in six of his last 11 starts, added that he will don No.35 for the East. That was the number he used to wear in Sweden, but can't with the Rangers because it's now retired in honor of Mike Richter. (http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/hockey/rangers/2009/01/08/2009-01-08_rangers_lundqvist_earns_first_star-1.html) Unless he switched to 30 now, in the Olympics he wore 35, too.

as happy as i am the bruins pulled this game out of their asses i feel bad for theodore, he made some remarkable saves and came up with that HUGE glove save in OT only to have a bad deflection beat him.
i see a rivalry being born with these two teams. i can't imagine what would happen if they met in the playoffs.

I was saying the EXACT same thing to my fiance. It really started with that 10-2 whitewash in DC last year, and then the next game was a REALLY chippy fightfest (featuring poor Matt Bradley getting pummeled by Milan Lucic right off the drop). I think one or two more "incidents" in that game last night would have set off something really major (even though it has really nothing to do with now, the Caps and Bs did have a GIANT brawl a few years back during the 90s)

those two seem to be all over each other when they play, the hook i though was questionable for the fact he only had one hand on his stick. how do you hook a guy with one hand on your stick? but no doubt ovechkin had him beat, i'll take the hooking call, with the B's PK, instead of givin that guy a lane to the net any day.

Detroit locked up Zetterberg until 2021, when he turns 40. He's pretty much a Red Wing for life with this deal.

So, what exactly was the point of the lockout then? Weren't owners bitching that they were paying too much money to the players?
That deal is only about 6 a year...which is pretty cheap for a player of Zetterberg's caliber. Plus, the Wings also have this provision that no player on their team makes a higher yearly salary than Lidstrom. The new trend has been to lock up players to gigantic long term deals at really cheap (eventually), front loaded contracts (like Vinny Lecavalier's deal, Ovi's deal, Mike Richards' deal, Rick DiPietro's deal). It makes really good fiscal sense to do so, because you can pretty much keep a star around for his entire career and not have to worry about "franchising" him the way you do in football, and it also keeps continuity going with the team and gives the fans a name to see at the arena every night.
I'm totally digging the Bruins and Caps, I was getting worried that we wouldn't be able to beat them. So this was a really good victory.

I don't blame Chara for it at all...he hooked him (it was called) and Ovi lost his edge...thank God he was able to turn at the last minute and hit the boards with his shoulder.

The game ended with Robert Lang, who scored the team’s only goal, in the hospital. His season – and possibly his career – appear to be over after an errant skate sliced his Achilles tendon at 11:27 of the third period.
Bad day for the Habs...they lost Lang and Latendresse, Kovalev was benched, and they got trounced by Boston again...AND they wore these uniforms

I love the shade of blue on the Leafs jersey
Tampa has been adamant about not dealing Vinny, although everyone seems to think they are headed that way. I really don't see why they WOULD...they just locked up the guy with an 11 year, 85 million extension. Then again, Tampa's ownership group is absolutely INSANE and would do something like that.
I think Michael Nylander would be just as good a fit for MTL (same type of player as Lang, makes pretty much the same money, and I want him out of DC because he sucks, has fewer goals than Shawn Thornton in much more ice time, doesn't fit Coach Boudreau's system, and is killing our cap space) providing they don't overpay for him and they can't get Vinny out of TB (now who do they give UP for Vinny? The Tits brothers, Higgins, Josh Gorges, Halak maybe?...seems like that would be cutting of their nose to spite their foot). could see them winding up with St. Louis too, since he wants out of TB
The Habs have a MILLION UFAs after this season (Tanguay, Kovalev, Lang, Koivu, Bouillion, Dandenault, Komisarek, plus Plekanec, Latendresse, and Higgins are all RFAs, and Carey Price and Jaroslav Halak will be RFAs after next year), so they've got to make something happen this year.
BTW....can you believe Vinny is only 28 years old???? Are you kidding me? I know he started for the Ning day 1 at age 18, but it still feels like he's been around for a million years?

Is it time for Crying Adam Graves?
Freitag
02-05-2009, 06:20 AM
If anyone would replace Crying Benoit, it would Crying Messier, not crying Graves.
The "Potvin Sucks" chant came in at a really good time. The problem with Graves' speech is that he didn't have someone vet the speech or at the very least, structure it so it got the most pops.
But it's done, and everyone who should be retired at MSG (with Bathgate and Howell coming up) is done. I think the only person to get recognition in the near future is gonna be Sam Rosen.
I got a little choked up too Gwen, but that's because the night the Rangers won the cup was one of the greatest nights of my life. It wasn't just that the Rangers won the cup, it was the last time that my entire group of core high school friends hung out together. After that night, we all kind of grew apart as High School friends do.
There are only three sporting events that choke me up... the 1996 World Series, the 1994 Stanley Cup, and the 2001 World Series (for bad, not good reasons...)

http://a.espncdn.com/media/apphoto/c9886c58-5c2f-44ca-9d19-0a6568638735.jpg
But Ovechkin tallied unassisted with about 9˝ minutes left, pulling Washington within 4-3. It was Ovechkin's league-high 37th goal this season and made him one of four NHL players to reach 200 career goals in four seasons, joining Wayne Gretzky, Mike Bossy and Mario Lemieux.
Wow
I don't what it is with this team and playing mediocre Western conference teams at home that gives us so much trouble (Edmonton, Columbus, and now LA). Of the 4 losses at home we have on the season, those are three of them right there (the other is Florida, who comes in Saturday)

No, Valliquette was in the whole game. I've never seen a goalie's value drop so much as his has this year. He was supposed to be trade bait, now he sucks.
Vallie is still awesome, barring last night. It is the Rangers defense that sucks. He and Lundqvist have to stand on their heads at all times. Do you remember how well he played in the beginning of this season? We saw him against TO and he KILLED it. It was a 0-0 game that went into a shoot out. He's still playing well, but unfortunately Philly this year, his team he always mopped up against rocks ass.
I think everyone is sick, every year this happens to the Rangers and every year they pick it up again in March. The whole team becomes flu-riddled and then they get their shit together.
Vallie was never supposed to be trade bait. We always wanted him as a backup, we don't have another good goalie in the system, especially now that we got rid of Montoya in Hartford.

Spoony, truthfully, I agree. I felt like we were on a streak of retiring all of the 1994 team and the gesture would lose its memorability. I think, as you said, Graves is a great ambassador, and at MSG and to the fan, that makes him worthy of the rafters. Perhaps it should have been an award (like the one for the police officer whose name escapes me), but I wonder if MSG and the Rangers Organization felt they owed it to him since they retired Richter, Mess and Leetch (all three of whom, I agree with). I also think part of it is the fact that they're retiring the other #9, Andy Bathgate later this month had something to do with it, too.
I think the bulk of my emotion from the event is that I get choked up every time a grown man cries and to see someone who loves the game so much and loves the organization he played for so much feel like he got the recognition he deserved and is remembered with his peer class was a nice sentiment. It is favorite garden moment #2 (second only to Messier's last game, which I was lucky enough to attend). If I could have gone to any other retirement ceremony I would've chosen Richter or Leetch.

I totally agree on his contributions to hockey and the Ranger family in the end, but even Richter can be argued here too. I understand his Cup year was great, but overall he's just an above average goalie with one great year. Look at his season stats and career totals.
Messier's career isn't even a question, but with the Rangers it could be. Sure he was amazing that same year in so many ways, mainly leadership. Still, it's pretty much the same thing as Bourque in Colorado getting his number retired, as the bulk of their work was elsewhere. Leetch is your true Ranger retired to the rafters (Graves too in terms of career time, but he's not on the same level).

To be honest, on second look Mess did a lot more in NY than I remember. I knew he had two stints there, but he really had some good ones in the first run. My comparison to him and Bourque really doesn't hold up like I thought.
As for Graves, it holds up even more.

The Rangers got absolutely TROUNCED last night, it was and is embarrassing, especially having to live through Brett's text ridicule as well, but at least there was the one good moment of Colton Orr knocking Rupp out.
At this point I wish the Rangers could get a win, ANY win, but they're coming into the game against the Caps on Wednesday and NOT scoring against them is NOT going to work. The D sucks and now the offense does, too. They've lost to ATL, Dallas (a disgrace, not losing to D, but losing 10-2) and now Jersey. I think we're in for a long couple of seasons as fans if they can't get their shyte together, and if they don't make the playoffs we'll lose Renney and that will make me sad.
February is notoriously bad for the Rangers, March around St. Patrick's day is when they pick it back up, but will that be enough to get to the playoffs? Yeesh.

The Caps have the opportunity to sweep the Rangers for the very first time in Franchise history tonight...wow...
Mike Green can also tie the NHL record for most goals in consecutive games by a Defenceman tonight *cough*NorrisTrophy*cough*

well my highly anticipated match-up with the sharks has come and gone. the sharks won 5-2 but the score was no indication of how the game went. it was a great game the first 40 but the b's came out flat in the 3rd and it cost them. they had SJ on the ropes for a while. first time the B's lost by more than 2 all season
was nice to see joe thornton again, though he bordered on invisible for most of the night he had one bounce off his skate and in. i honestly felt bad for him when they showed him on the bench a few times. he was so great here in boston and continues to be great in SJ but somewhere the masses just turned on him.
i was making an argument last night for dennis wideman for norris trophy. i think he'll emerge as a top d-man in the league in the next 3 seasons, but it would be hard to not give it to green. leading the nhl in scoring for defensmen, third on the team, averages just over 25mins a night (good for 9th in the league) and on pace to shatter his career highs. not to mention 14 pts in his last 6 games.
one thing about washington is they took advantage of all the shit seasons and drafted really well. i don't know who is scouting for them but they are good.
top 4 scorers on the team all drafted by washington
ovechkin 69 pts - drafted 04 1st rnd number 1 overall
backstrom 55 pts - 06 1st rnd 4th overall
green 47 pts - 04 1st round 29th overall
semin 46 pts - 02 1st rnd 13th overall
89 goals total for the four and that makes up exactly 50% of the teams 178 GF on the season.
