Holy shit last nights Bruins game was awesome.
Steve Ott was being a fag, going low on people's knees and wouldn't fight. He eventually got his when Ference nailed him on open ice. After that he mouthed off and got a game misconduct so he wouldn't get his ass kicked. Pussy.
Avery got his too.
So fun to watch them get their asses beat.
Both Ott and Avery are douchebags. They always take their cheap shots game in and game out.

This is why you don't sign a goalie to a fucking 15 year deal jerkoffs. I fucking hate this ownership!

Unless you have any threshold for pain. Sorry, I've played with cracked ribs before....even though my doc said not to. Ooops.
I played through broken ribs last year, but it fucking hurt!! The worst was, every once in a while, I'd get bumped just right and I could feel the bones grind together- I saw stars. Took the better part of 2 months to get over it.

Yep, it's pretty much over for the Devils now. I'm shocked I just went through a sports quarter season where I saw Tom Brady and Martin Broduer get shelved due to devestating injuries.

Weeks was ON FIRE last night- esp in the first. Yes, the team plays totally differently with Marty in there, but it is not something they can't correct. The D just has to learn not to rely on him playing the puck as much.
They still have a TON of talent up front and that Parise is just about capable of of putting the whole team on his shoulders. They will still be in the hunt.

Weekes really isn't going to be an effective answer IMO
If I'm the Devs, I make a serious run at this guy
http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/03ul4gxfys8qD/610x.jpg
He makes 3, so they'd have to fix the numbers somehow in what they give to ATL (Zubie stinks anyway and he makes 3.4(!) ) but it would give them incredible depth at G when Marty comes back, and it would help Atlanta in getting more and more terrible so they can enter the Tavares/Hedman sweepstakes, plus he's an RFA at the end of the year, so you can see how much of a commitment you could make to him and maybe use him to bridge Marty out eventually
And he's only 24 (which is nuts) and ATL has a blue chip STUD in Ondrej Pavelec that needs to play (because he's already raising issues about not being able to play

The more i've been thinking about this, 4 months (the end of his return timetable) puts Marty back at the begining of March. I actually think Weeks can hold the fort until then. I'm once again willing to trust the system and ride it out, see where it takes them.

Weeks took the Hurricanes to the Stanley Cup. I think he'll do fine. We just need to get more offense. Can't rely on scoring 1 or 2 goals a game.

Alexander Semin = Unbeweevable....just wow
The PK is on FIRE....theyve killed off 38 of the last 41 opportunities, but the Power Play (!) is awful, which is maddeningly confusing considering the amount of talent we have to work with. Good win over CAR, but it hurts losing Fedorov and Mo.

Blake Wheeler gets a special gift after his first hat trick (http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/hockey/bruins/view.bg?articleid=1130643)
We may have witnessed the start of a very interesting trend at the Garden last night - far preferable, most would agree, to fans’ throwing a dead octopus on the ice to salute a hat trick.
When Bruins [team stats] rookie winger Blake Wheeler slid the puck 90 feet into the Maple Leafs’ empty net with 52.3 seconds left, completing his hat trick and giving the B’s a 5-2 victory, it brought the standard cascade of hats from the stands.
And something else: one bra.
“I’ve never seen that before,” said Wheeler. “I guess I’ll have to autograph it and hang it up somewhere around here.”

It definitely shouldn't have been brought out so soon, or in public, but it's not like other teams haven't done things like this before. If you Devil fans don't think Swinging Lou wouldn't have gone this route, or in fact had his new pick already locked in, you're absolutely insane. Many GMs around the league hate Lou for his bs back door dealings with the worst NHL commish in history, Bettman. Sorry to burst your anti-ranger bubble, and I'm no Ranger lover myself, but if they never signed him I think they'll get a comp pick. We'll see, but being that it has been rumored that the kid was sick and he and his people hid it won't help either.

Ning trade Matt Carle to Flyers for Steve Downie and Steve Eminger (http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=255088&lid=headline&lpos=topStory_main)
WTF?
(a) Did Carle play himself out of there that quickly?
(b) If Carle was only gonna stick around for 10 games or so, WHY TRADE DAN BOYLE FOR HIM?? I understand Boyle's salary was a pain, but then again, they also didn't have to sign Recchi, Malone, Roberts, or Olaf Kolzig, or Radim Vrbata.
(c) Carle's still just a baby with huge upside, how does trading him for a goon and a guy who has never really realized any sort of potential (even though still fairly young) help their Defence in the least?
(d) Philly's D in a few years could be SCARY good if Carle develops into what he's supposed to (along with Coburn's continued maturation), and Kimmo Timmonen is only 32 (has a prob staying healthy though), plus Sbisa's played well enough at 18 (!) to stick with the big club

This one we TOTALLY agree on. Both the trade breakdown and the way the Flyer D is shaping up down the road. Hell, I believe Sbisa and Carle can be very good this year. Carle showed good abilities in SJ, not sure what happened in TB for such a hasty move.

I'm still not sure how I feel about this. I do agree it was a dirty hit, but Van Ryn was also pretty careless and essentially turned his back to the player behind him. There's some measure of safety for your own body that you need to be aware of when playing out there. It's hard not to feel bad for the guy though and it's not like I don't have a heart, it's a dangerous play but instead of stutter stepping if he'd just grabbed the puck and circled the net or something, this wouldn't have happened.

I stood up and joined in the ovation midway through the first when they played the tribute video, because I still got love for the guy even though he departed on pretty contentious terms (the guy was in our system for 19 years and he was the last link to the teams I grew up with).
Tampa Bay is TERRIBLE by the way...no other way to describe them...just a bad, bad hockey team all around. It was good to see Ovi get back on the scoreboard

It was a stupid hire from the start. Good riddance to bad garbage. I think Tocchet may actually do a decent job.

Didn't Oren Koules and Len Barrie learn ANYTHING from Dan Snyder? You can't take a bunch of random, has been vets and combine with them with a big name coach, and just expect the wins to come flying thick and fast
And the thing is, they didn't really NEED a whole lot coming into this season! They had some holes on D they needed to address, and probably could have added a piece or two on offence (they had Smith at G after the Richards deal, and after Theodore and Huet, there was really nothing else out there). And there's gotta be some karma at work too, after the way they treated Dan Boyle (threatened to keep him home unless he waived his no trade clause), Tortorella (who sucks, but still got a raw deal) and poor Jay Feaster. This has to be the most incompetently run franchise in sports right now...bar none.
There's a great post on Puck Daddy about Melrose:
The Lightning are 5-7-4, with 14 points. But one look at their stats shows the sort of chemistry disaster this roster has been. Every whisper behind the scenes about Tampa has been about Melrose's disorganization and lack of preparedness for this gig.
Melrose couldn't organize the players, couldn't motivate them. He was in a constant state of psychological warfare with them. The depth lines of this team were invisible, and that's a whole lot of money to be paying something invisible. The team had no style, no personality. Perhaps that's out of its construction; or perhaps Melrose couldn't give them one.
And here's something from a Caps blog about Melroses' post game presser the other day after the Bolts lost in DC
Melrose's court of press last night consisted largely of Florida media and local bloggers. We had to wait nearly for 30 minutes for his arrival. He didn't address us long, not even 5 minutes, but it was abundantly clear that had he not had those 30 minutes to partially cool off, much of what he would have told us wouldn't have been fit for print even on most blogs.
He started by calling his team's first-period performance "brutal."
"I told the guys, 'Why try when you get down 3-0, why try then? Why care [only] when you've given up three goals?'"
"I was very disappointed with the play in front of Olie, in Washington. [Rising anger pause at this point] We got a lot of guys that gotta do some soul-searching, cause we got a lot of players that aren't playing very well right now."
When one reporter suggested that the Caps had made things difficult for the visitors by coming out and playing inspired against their former goalie, the coach would have none of it.
"They had five shots in the first period [6, officially]. They weren't the New York Islanders of '84 by any stretch of the imagination. They had three scoring chances and they put them in. And that's what the Caps do, they got some great talent. It wasn't what they were doing, we were awful."
"A terrible change gives up a goal, Green beat two of our guys up the ice on another goal . . . it wasn't that Washington was great, we just weren't ready to play.
"For the life of me I do not know why."
Then a reporter asked a legitimate question about between-period adjustments Tampa made to make the game competitive after so sour a start. Melrose the nice guy, the studio yuckster, was nowhere to be found.
"We sang 'Kumbaya' around the fire after the second period," he shot back with a death stare.
Yowza!
Did Tampa's improved play in periods two and three make the start all the more frustrating?
"It just pisses you off more," the coach returned.
"When you come in here and you're just stick-checking and nobody's hitting anybody and you say 'Excuse me' when you go to the net . . . "
A final broadside launched by the new head coach returned to the topic of Tampa's 20 skaters letting down a goalie on his special night.
"If I'm those guys I can't look Olie in the face. You know probably the biggest game this guy's played in years, and they show up and do that for him. I think those guys should all be hiding their eyes when they walk by Olie Kolzig tonight
Joke
Had a great time at the Caps game tonight...lots of fun (and a Caps win over Jersey), and Ovi's back...3rd straight game with a goal, including a vintage Ovi Power Wrister and a great performance from Jose Theodore. I love my new Bruce Boudreau bobblehead!

Rumour has/had the Caps sending Michael Nylander to the 'Hawks for Dustin Byfuglien, but the Hawks wouldn't bite (http://www.thethirdmanin.com/2008.11.01_arch.html)
Torn on this deal....in the short term, it would REALLY help us cap wise, but im also fairly sure they could get more later in the season if they decided to deal Nyls instead of just Dustin Byfuglien (I guess the cap space garnered is where it would be most beneficial), but centre is also the weakest position we have on our team, and it doesnt help us there in the least...outside of Backy and Nyls, there's just Boyd Gordon, Diamond Dave Steckel and Sergei Fedorov (who's been spending a ton of time at D, and is currently hurt)

"He's not competitive enough or fit enough to help us, so why put him back in? He's never been fit enough to help us," said Oilers head coach Craig MacTavish. "We signed him to be a top-two line player and that's kind of where it ended. The difference was we thought the contract was a starting point, and he's viewed it as a finish line. "It's been one thing after another. I can't watch it for - certainly not another two and-a-half years."

The Hawks have a deal ready to go to get Michael Nylander from DC...problem is, they dont have the Cap space to do it, and need to deal Khabibulin, which wouldn't be a problem if they hadn't signed Cristobal Huet to that ridiculous deal from, of all places, DC
TSN story (http://www.tsn.ca/blogs/bob_mckenzie/?id=256484)
The Chicago Blackhawks, according to multiple NHL sources, have a standing deal ready to go at a moment's notice to acquire veteran center Michael Nylander from the Washington Capitals.
The only hitch is that in order to make the transaction, the Blackhawks need to free up considerable cap space and conventional wisdom is the only way they can do that is trade netminder Nikolai Khabibulin.
Just one problem, though. Khabibulin is playing much better than Cristobal Huet, the free agent acquisition who was supposed to be the Hawks' No. 1 goaltender this season. On the surface, it doesn't seem possible that the Hawks could trade Khabibulin right now, but the sense that is precisely what will happen because the Blackhawks feel the strong need to bolster the centre position.
The irony, of course, is that Huet was the Capitals' goaltender and when Washington refused to pay him what he wanted in free agency, the Hawks swooped in and gave Huet a four-year, $22.5-million deal that doesn't look as good now as it did in the summer, when the Hawks were coming off a season where Khabibulin was a gross underachiever. Washington then had to go out and make a deal with Jose Theodore, who at times this season has been outplayed by backup Brent Johnson. Now, the Blackhawks having that glut of goalie salaries is apparently what is preventing them from getting Nylander from the Capitals.

I was at that game... Really a freak thing. No one was really even near him and he just dropped. From the way he left the ice, it didn't look good. Did I hear it was a groin injury?
Luongo went down with just 4:54 gone in the game after kicking with his left leg and then trying to move right in reaction to what appeared to be a routine shot by Philippe Boucher that was deflected by defenseman Rob Davison.
"I don't know if it happened when I was extending or as I was trying to react to the deflection — it was pretty much a lot of pain at that point," he said after the game.
Luongo crumpled to the ice and stayed there for several minutes. He had to be helped off the ice, unable to put any weight on his left leg.
"There was pretty much a lot of pain there," Luongo told the media. "Right away, I knew it wasn't good. It's very disappointing and frustrating. We were playing great as a team, and I was really happy with my game in the last few weeks."

NHL Attendance Rising, NBA Attendance declining (http://sportsmediawatch.blogspot.com/2008/11/nba-versus-nhl-again.html)
What cannot be disputed is that the NHL's attendance is on an upward trend, while the NBA's is on a downward trend. Through November 10, NHL attendance was up 1.2% compared to the same period last year. During the 2007-08 season, NHL attendance was up 1.8%, while NBA attendance was down 2.1%.
What can be taken from this? The NBA still has higher attendance than the NHL, and while NBA attendance has been declining in the past two seasons, last year's average attendance still ranked among the best in league history. The NHL does take the lead in terms of filling its arenas to capacity; 20 NHL teams play to 90% capacity, compared to 17 for the NBA.
The biggest difference between the two leagues may be this: only 4 NHL teams play to less than 80% capacity, compared to 8 NBA teams that share that distinction. Four NBA teams (Charlotte, Philadelphia, Sacramento and Memphis) are currently averaging fewer fans per game than the team with the lowest attendance in the NHL -- the New York Islanders.
NBA/NHL attendance since 2002.
2007-8: NBA 17,396, NHL 17,268 (difference of 1%)
2006-7: NBA 17,767, NHL 16,964 (difference of 5%)
2005-6: NBA 17,548, NHL 16,955 (difference of 3%)
2004-5: NBA 17,314, NHL (no season)
2003-4: NBA 17,130, NHL 16,538 (difference of 4%)
2002-3: NBA 16,883, NHL 16,592 (difference of 2%)
And all this WITHOUT ANY PRESENCE on ESPN for the NHL, and one game a week on national broadcast, and two games a week on a poo poo cable network featuring Brian Engblom's awful hair and Mike Emrick's stupidity (and also, you can fit more people in to see Bball than you can for hockey, so those numbers are pretty much even)

Sean Avery has been suspended indefinitely by the NHL
Why you ax? How bout these comments concerning Dion Phanuef and his ex girl friend, Elisha Cuthbert (on top of calling Jarome Iginla "a player nobody cares about")
"Uh, I'm really happy to be back in Calgary. I love Canada.
"And I just want to comment on how it's become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don't know what that's about.
"Enjoy the game tonight."
It was nice of his team to at least back him up right?
"I completely support the league's decision to suspend Sean Avery. Had the league not have suspended him, the Dallas Stars would have. This organization will not tolerate such behavior, especially from a member of our hockey team. We hold our team to a higher standard and will continue to do so.

I don't think ANY coach has consistently gotten more out of less talent than Laviolette. I mean, even during their Cup run, who would you REALLY want on their team besides Staal? Off the coaches topic, but just a quick observation from last night's game (Rangers vs. Pens, section 301). DISCLAIMER: I'm bitter and complain, a lot.
We have a mini plan, 10 games this year at the Garden. We've made it to all of our games so far and have seen the same people. Last night, for Rangers v. Pens we were SURROUNDED by Pittsburgh fans. The sections around us seemed to be inundated by them as well. Obviously I can't be too bitter, 'cause we won, but seriously, can Penguins fans get a different jersey besides Crosby? You guys had Jagr, Lemieux, you have Malkin, Staal, Hossa. All you ever see are #87 jerseys. As a Rangers fan I acknowledge there are a lot of Messier jerseys and a lot of Lundqvist jerseys, but there are still lots of Leetch, Graves, Richter, Gilbert, Jagr, Dubinsky, Prucha, etc. sprinkled in there for good measure.
Second, there is nothing more annoying than where I was seated last night (yes, this sounds like my first point, but bear with me). The woman behind us, a Pens fan, had to tell everyone in our section (as she spoke loudly to her neighbor) that her grandfather and (and I quote) "Sid the Kid's" great grandfather are brothers, so she really likes him. She then proceeded to squeal and screech every time the penguins got the puck in the rangers zone, like, the kind of sound you make when your team almost scores and it actually is close, except these were any time they touched the puck. She also had to yell "c'mon, Sid the Kid" everytime he stepped on the ice. Needless to say, she didn't enjoy when the jumbotron showed him being sat down again and again at the end of the 3rd period (forgot who hit him).
I love hockey fans, I love that people are into the game, but I can't stand when people are overdramatic boobs and I was surrounded by them at the game last night.
Can the Rangers dump Rozsival already. Seriously, we got rid of Tyutin and kept him? What the hell?
Finally, Sean Avery is a distraction. Yes, I loved him on the Rangers initially, but by the end of his tenure there he'd lost his ability to motivate the team and became nothing but a distraction. Was I glad he was in our jersey to do that, yeah, but when he starts distracting his own team it's time for him to get over himself.
Sorry this was long, i haven't posted lately.

Welcome back Gwen!
The stuff with you and Pens fans has been going on here for YEARS...they came down in busloads last year when I went to the game (this was the Backstrom game) and were generally assholes the entire game. People wonder why I hate the Penguins, and this is exactly why. The only douchier fans (on the internet at least) are Wings fans (sorry Friday and Gvac). And I TOTALLY noticed the people wearing nothing but Crosby jersies. America wins when Pittsburgh loses.
Although I still find ThePensblog to be REALLY funny

Welcome back Gwen!
I told ya the Rangers gave up too much (in Tyutin and Backman) for Zherdev ;) is Dan Frische still alive?
Backman I can't speak for, 'cause I never really got to get a feel for him, but I said the minute I heard Tyuts was gone that it was a loss. Everyone said I was nuts, but I certainly think he was better than friggin' Rozsival.
As for Zherdev you won't hear a word of complaint from me about him. I say it was a good get. Scoring is something we've needed to work on and thankfully something he seems able to do. Frische I could take or leave, he's a -2, I've got no love nor any ill will toward him.
If only my original favorite of the season, Aaron Voros, hadn't lost his heat. He was tearin' it up in the beginning of the season and has died out. And finally, Prucha scored, poor S.O.B. has been a healthy scratch for like almost a full season (mixing this year with last) and he scored the game tying goal. Hopefully that will light a lil fire under him.
God, I've missed this thread (and I've even got Center Ice & The NHL network this year so I should participate more).

Agreed, Capitals games are the same way with Ovechkin jerseys though, although because of the redesign you'll see fair amount of older ones too, but the amount of 8 paraphernalia is pretty shocking. Although I'd assume the same from other teams with a big star player, Nash jerseys in C-Bus, Brodeur jerseys in Jersey, etc...

bruins continue to be the class of the east and beat the lightning last night with thier 2, 3, and 4 defensemen out (ference, wideman, ward all of whom average about 20 minutes per night).
i wonder what they're thinking in tampa since they dumped melrose after 15 games and continue to lose with the gambler behind the bench, and former bruins coach and player mike sullivan (who behind the bench led boston to the top seed in the east in 02.. IIRC) as assistant.

avery is a douche bag, and i think its his reputation as a douche that landed him the suspension more than the action itself. he's out of control.
i wouldn't care if he made the comments then went out on the ice and manned up and fought phaneuf but we all know he wouldn't have. hes a punk bitch and will get what's coming to him, just like komisarek did when milan lucic finally threw down with him.
bruins continue to be the class of the east and beat the lightning last night with thier 2, 3, and 4 defensemen out (ference, wideman, ward all of whom average about 20 minutes per night).
i wonder what they're thinking in tampa since they dumped melrose after 15 games and continue to lose with the gambler behind the bench, and former bruins coach and player mike sullivan (who behind the bench led boston to the top seed in the east in 02.. IIRC) as assistant.
not much
with the rays success and this always being a bucs town, and the bucs are good this year, nobody cares about the lightning
hardly anyone calls sports talk radio to talk about the 'ning
the melrose firing talk lasted bout half a day, now not much

The Avery thing was his nappyheaded ho's moment. He made a statement on a slow news day and got skewered for it.
I can't believe Dallas is saying they may not take him back on the team. Are you fucking kidding me? You were the ones who signed him in the first place.
Take control of your team, Brett. You fucking signed him.

so its official, the boston bruins officially have two number one goaltenders
tim thomas 10-3-3 with a save percentage of .942 (2nd in NHL) and a GAA 0f 1.83 (1st)
manny fernandez 8-1-1 .926 (8th) and 2.09 (6th)
does anyone know of any other teams running a tandem this year? i know the red wings were pretty successful last season with osgood and hasek going almost 50-50.
I'm just sitting back and waiting.
Waiting for the collapse of the Sharks and the Rangers.
I know it's coming.

part of me feels the same way about the bruins. after the last 4 seasons its almost too good to be true. this bruins team is in my opinion the best in the league. if you look at the sharks record sure, they're great, but look at who they have been playing. roughly 75% of the games they have played were against teams ranked 10th or lower in their respective conferences. i can't wait for them to come back to boston. it will be only the second time joe thornton has been back since he was traded. i went to the first game and he got tossed for boarding in the first five minutes, his third shift i believe.
as for the rangers, once all these other teams catch up in GP they're gonna find themselves right in the thick of things most likely battling to stay in it the rest of the way.

Sabres are denying report that Golisano is talking about selling the team to Jim Balsillie (http://rochesterhomepage.net/content/fulltext/?cid=51451)
The December issue of WNY Hockey will be out Thursday. The author of the article is Jim Kelley, the magazine's managing editor. Kelley has covered the Sabres since 1981, and currently works for Canada-based Rogers Sportsnet.
The source says that Sabres minority owner Larry Quinn is actively looking to find a buyer, and that Canandian businessman Jim Balsillie has been approached by Quinn or an associate. Balsillie is co-founder of Research in Motion, the Waterloo, Ontario-based company that makes the Blackberry mobile device.
A group spearheaded by Balsillie tried unsuccessfully to purchase the Nashville Predators and move that franchise to Hamilton, about 80 miles away from Buffalo. When that fell through, the Toronto Star reported that Balsillie approached Golisano about a potential sale of the Sabres. Golisano turned Balsillie away in December of 2007, saying he wouldn't sell to someone who intends to move the team. A team in Hamilton would infringe upon the Sabres and the Toronto Maple Leafs home turf, and would have to pay fees.
The article says that a deal could be struck where the Sabres play part of a home schedule in Hamilton's Copps Coliseum.
I feel bad for Buffalo....some of the best, most loyal fans in the league, and they get stuff like this...damn shame

They learned nothing from Dan Snyder...you CANNOT bring in a bunch of overpriced older veterans and automatically just expect to win
And again, they weren't that far off! They needed to add a little bit of O and to address some holes on their D. They ran Boyle out of town (their only puck moving D man, and their PP QB) because they "couldn't afford him" at 6 + and then spent millions on Roberts, Recchi, Malone, Vrbata and Kolzig (when their tandem should have been Ramo and Smith from the get go)

More fun Tampa news!
Quote from Mike Smith about last night's loss:
"The coaches have given us an opportunity to know what to do putting the game plan on the board, in practice we go through what we're supposed to be doing in situations, then we go on the ice and it's like we forgot everything," said goaltender Mike Smith, who stopped 19 shots, including a penalty-shot attempt by P.J. Axelsson. "I don't know if we're a dumb team, if we just don't get it or we don't deserve to be in this league, I don't know, but we are making the same mistakes we talk about game in and game out."
And Barry Melrose is still angry! (http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_daddy/post/Melrose-hopes-Tampa-doesn-t-win-a-game-for-the-?urn=nhl,127864#remaining-content)
• When asked about how he feels about the Lightning after his dismissal, Melrose said he wasn't close with nearly any of the players before expressing his disdain for the franchise: "I hope Tampa Bay doesn't win a game for the rest of the year."
• Melrose compared the ownership situation in Tampa to that of the Harold Ballard Era for the Toronto Maple Leafs. But he also said plenty between the lines about which of the Lightning's owners he preferred; going over the top in praise for Oren Koules ("Good guy, good for the NHL. He's put his heart and soul into this team") while ignoring co-owner Len Barrie.
When the hosts called him on the disparity, Melrose mumbled and stumbled before saying: "Lenny was ... they hired me and gave me a chance to coach. I will always appreciate that. I hope Oren Koules does well. I like Oren." Gotcha, Barry.
• On his firing, Melrose basically called Tocchet a tool for management. "I had guys in Tampa that wanted to run the team, and I wouldn't let them," said Melrose, who talked about the constant pressures of playing the right players for the right amount of time. He said he was fired because "the guys in charge decided they wanted to coach." Sounds like in Barry's eyes, Tocchet's a puppet.
• Melrose again denied that infamous Al Strachan report that Barrie went into the locker room and was coaching the team while Barry was still at the helm -- even if he vaguely inferred that it might be happening under Tocchet. " I wouldn't let it happen," said Melrose, "but I guarantee you that's one of the reasons I was let go.
• Finally, on Stamkos, Melrose didn't mince words about the rookie star of the team's summer marketing campaign: "Steven's not ready for the NHL."
And Barry Melrose is still angry! (http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_daddy/post/Melrose-hopes-Tampa-doesn-t-win-a-game-for-the-?urn=nhl,127864#remaining-content)

Any coach who is fired after less than 2 months simply for on-ice performance and not for extreme personal misconduct or something detrimental to the sport or the team just simply illustrates an extremely bad managerial team.

Ovi was hurt during the preseason, and missed some games to go visit his dying grandfather in the Rus. I still think he's really banged up because it seems like he's sitting out of practice every other day for "wear and tear" but he's been off the hook lately. Sasha's been hurt too but he finally game back last night after missing like 10 games, and we're still missing Green, Schultz, Clark, Fedorov, Fehr, Erskine (although that's really not a loss) and Fleischmann. A few games ago the only guy we had playing on D that was in the starting lineup on opening night was Milan Jurcina...yikes.
Karl Alzner is the TRUTH. He's been leading the team in ice time, and hopefully they won't have to send him back to Hershey. We've also gotten great contributions from guys like Sean Collins and Tyler Sloan, but I don't think those guys can keep it up for a whole season. We really need to make a deal to clear up some cap space.
Bouque's been okay when he's been up, but he's down in Hershey at the moment. Partly because we're right up against the Cap, and they like to replace players who are injured with similar type players. With all the skill guys getting injured theyve been calling up guys like Alexandre Giroux and Oskar Osala and Keith Aucoin.
How great was Brent Johnson last night?

It seemed to me like Boston REALLY had trouble with their breakouts and the Caps were jumping all over their passes out of the defensive zone and being effective with their forecheck. They could really use a good puck moving D man in Boston

johnson had a stellar performance. the bruins had their chances, many of them and got robbed every time. the wheeler attempt was the nicest one, where johnson came down and stuffed him witht he stick.
the bruins are with out their 3 and 4 defencemen right now (ward and ference), and not to take anything away from the caps but the bruins never seemed to find their legs last night, and the last game vs tampa (which they stole). they seemed to stray from their normal physically charged approach too. and why chara let ovechkin push him around all night i'll never know. i kept yelling for anyone to hit those guys. you can't give a guy like ovechkin, or semin, or backstrom ANY room to work or they will fuck you nine times out of ten.
i just want to know how the caps are not challenging for the eastern conference lead. i had them pegged for a 1-2 team all season this years after the turn around last year. had they not shit the bed the first quarter of the year under hanlon they could have taken the 1 spot in the east IMO.
Can the Rangers actually win a game in the regulation 60 minutes? WTF?:wallbash:

Also
Yesterday's 3-1 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes was the fifth "back-half" of back-to-back games played thus far by the Caps this season. So far, they are 1-3-1 in those games, winless since the first of them, which was the home opener against Chicago. All four losses -- three in regulation and one in extra time -- were suffered on the road.
The Caps have eight more of those "back-half" games to play. Six of them are on the road, meaning that of the 13 back-to-back games to be played this season, ten of the "back-half" games will be road games.
We've only lost 1 game in regulation at the Booth, but are 5-9 on the road...once every one gets healthy, we should be okay.

12/12/2008 – DEAR MARGO: I have been dating a guy for two years, and when we met, everything was perfection. We have had ups and downs, of course, but I feel there's one thing that is always putting a strain on our life: My boyfriend is totally obsessed with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Everything he does revolves around them, from the clothes he wears each day (always a Penguins hat and/or shirt) to the car he drives (his license plate boasts the name of his favorite player) to his room, which is covered floor to ceiling with 8 by 10 pictures, jerseys in cases, pucks, sticks, game-used skates and hockey cards. He needs to go to all the home games (42-plus over eight months), and he goes alone because he only has one ticket. His hockey mania takes a huge toll on our relationship because it involves a large chunk of time away from "us." We both work and go to school, so our time is limited, but the Penguin season in the mix makes it much worse. I end up feeling unimportant to him -- almost as if he has a second girlfriend and he's cheating on me with "her." Please help me find a way to make him understand my feelings and to lessen the strain on our relationship.

WASHINGTON -- A 6-foot-7 Web site producer for the Washington Capitals dressed as the team's backup goalie for Friday night's game against the Ottawa Senators because of an injury to Jose Theodore.
Brett Leonhardt has worked for the Caps' Web site for about a year and has taken part in drills during practices when the team needed an extra goalie.
Brett Leonhardt, a Division III goalie in college, signed an amateur tryout contract before the game. If he had actually played, he would have tied Ben Bishop of the St. Louis Blues as the tallest goalie ever to see action in an NHL game.
Thankfully Simeon Varlamov showed up midway through the first to relieve Stretch. He showed why he's the truth in Montreal

It should make you sick if youre a Rangers fan that Redden, Roszival, and Kalinin are making over 17 million dollars combined
Drury, Gomez and Naslund make 20 million combined themselves
Who thinks the Rangers should go for Avery and Sundin??
Sundin, yeah, is there room in the cap or locker room for Avery and his ego? Doubtful. Plus, with Brodeur out there aren't really any big "enemies" we need him getting us fired up for. I worry, as I said earlier, that he'd be a distraction more than someone to rally around.
Oh, and let's give it up for the Rangers who actually won in regulation for the first time in God only knows how long.
It should make you sick if youre a Rangers fan that Redden, Roszival, and Kalinin are making over 17 million dollars combined
It makes me sick as a Rangers fan that Roszival is even still on our fucking team. I have NEVER seen someone (besides Malik) give away so many pucks, never cover their man and just generally fuck a team in the ass the way Roszival does.
I am so sad about Kalinin. I was excited that he was on our team, especially since we had Drury, too, both after Buffalo kicked the poop out of us the previous year, but he's been worthless, Redden, too.
Good D has been a perpetual problem for the blue shirts. Staal and Mara are good, but there is only so much they can do, and then you can't put them together on a line 'cause your other lines will blow goats for quarters. Quite a conundrum...

Kalinin was dog poop in Buffalo...weekapaug could have told you as much. And God knows WHY they threw so much at Redden after how his tenure ended in Ottawa
Boy was I ever a sage! (From the first week of the season)
I didn't think their D looked all that good to be honest....they got beat a TON of times, and Zherdev showed a lot of his olde habits (taking on 5 guys by himself instead of trying to pass the puck for a better opportunity and playing within the system)
The announcers tried their damndest to somehow convince me that Redden and Dmitri Kalinin (who i'm pretty sure has "Wanted" posters out for him in Buffalo) are any significant upgrades over Tyutin and Backman, but I don't buy it.
From what I watched, Tampa will get absolutely forechecked to DEATH this season by good teams, and NYR will struggle too

they only have a million three in Cap Space...who do they dump? Avery makes 4, and Sundin will probably want 5 or 6
It should make you sick if youre a Rangers fan that Redden, Roszival, and Kalinin are making over 17 million dollars combined
Drury, Gomez and Naslund make 20 million combined themselves
well he was asking if we'd like not if its possible
and yes thats sickening

eh, they can have him. being in th esame division as boston with quebec and toronto i've seen alot of him and i really don't see what the fuss is about. i bet he was a great leader up there in tor and did well but he's not a guy that can raise the level of the guys around him. plus he's 37 yrs old. and van threw how much at him? i heard $10m... and for such a "respected" player he plays kinda dirty.

I think he was trying for Bald Bull, not Piston Honda.
In any case, I thought he looked like the illegtimate son of Tie Domi and Kris King.
BTW, did you know that Kris King is now an exec with the NHL? He's one of the video replay officials in Toronto.

Yes, we saw the behind the scenes show about how "the War Room" works in TO and saw him front and center on it. I thought it was on NHL network, but for some reason I think it might have been part of a Rangers' broadcast.

I think we saw the same show - Was Kris dressed VERY casually, like just a shirt, hat, and jeans? I remember seeing it on MSG, but it might have been an NHL production. I'm not sure.
I think it was a Rangers' long pre-game show before a weekend game, like what they show between 6 and 7.

The All Star game is the way it is because the NHL is retarded.
They didn't have a captcha set up for the voting process, so Habs fans created a program in FireFox to automatically register votes for their team members. The league eventually set up a captcha, but not until the Habs fans had built up a sizeable lead for their guys. Pittsburgh fans started ballot stuffing for Malkin and Crosby to offset the Habs ballot stuffing (which led to a short lived "Unholy Alliance" between Pens fans and Caps fans to push Ovi into starting so no Habs forwards would start in the game). Much of the same occured out west with the Hawks fans ballot stuffing Kane and Toews to push out Zetterberg and Datsyuk.
This is exactly why All Star game appearances should not by any means be used to judge how good a player is in ANY sport.

Florida is in the middle of the playoff hunt, theyre only 2 (!) points behind Pittsburgh (!!) and theyve given up 113 goals, which is pretty damn good. I can't see them making a deal at all until the deadline and I assume they would certainly ask the WORLD back for Bouwmeester. Anderson's a UFA after this year, who will make a boatload of money next year, so I can see them packaging the two together, but only if they completely fall of the face of the earth, which I don't see happening because theyre so good defensively.
BTW, Jacob Markstrom is a Florida prospect, and he's REALLY good (outside of the fish flopping)

Were you a Nordiques fan? I loved Quebec and still kind of like the Avs even though they are in Colorado and have no resemblance to the old team. A good friend of mine is a Jets fan but hates the Coyotes and another is a Whaler fan who likes the Hurricanes because of the connection.

I realize the cost for JayBo, but I wasn't serious even if Florida likes getting raped. In the least, he'll be a free agent come the off-season unless he's moved and signed before hand (not likely right now). I don't want the Avs to be buyers right now, I want them to sell off the likes of Hannan, Tucker and others ....even Hejduk perhaps. He's very unlikely to go past his most recent contract, and that would mean 2009/10 is his last year. I'd love to cash out on him for the future if that's the case. Perhaps, Halak for some grit, scoring and a pick? We'll see.

You mean the 1 seed first round demons!? Of course I was a fan, but I'm very happy with their move. Especially the first year.

My girl knows her hockey....the same can't be said for Tenbats.
Welcome back, Spoony. I was getting ready to put up the bat signal for ya.

meh. miller really hasn't been that great this year. he let's up way too many weak goals.
phil kessel should definitely be on that squad though.

This makes me a lil sad, but it's like the Circle of hockey life for him...I think he's largely gonna be remembered as a Red Wing, though.
Not sure if this was mentioned in this thread or not, but apparently New Line Cinema commissioned a screenplay about Sean Avery's "double life". (http://www.newsweek.com/id/165674)

The whole east squad is a mess bc of those stupid Canadians. Perhaps Gvac voted them all in while singing Oh Canada.
