Havlat goes to the wild at ~5 million a year (2.5 million less than Gaborik in the end). I guess they like this injury prone player better than the other injury prone player. Still, to me the price is clearly better and Havlat did play pretty much a full season last year which warranted a decent contract. Still, perhaps Gaborik can do more damage offensively in a less defensive first system outside of Minny? We'll see soon enough.

The Devils lost two valuable players. God, this is awful.
I'd be more worried they still don't have a coach
Brashear's minutes will be quite minor, and expect a good number of healthy scratches which makes the contract even more questionable. Fuck, he'll be 38 in January.
It boggles my mind. They could have just kept Orr, who was younger, cheaper, and better. Are two extra years of Orr at 1m REALLY all that bad?

Mark Recchi re signs with Boston
Nik Antropov signs with the Thrashers, 4 and 16
All of a sudden, Atlanta is starting to look really intriguing for next year. That D Corps of Kubina, Hainsey, Bogosian, Enstrom, Valabik and Salmella really won't stop a lot of people, but they sure will put up a hell of a lot of points. Their forwards are looking pretty good with Antropov, Kovalchuk, Slava Kozlov's ghost, and Bryan Little (whom I love...he's going to be a great player, and Brett Sterling ain't that bad either). Rich Peverley was a great pick up for them last year from Nashville.
I think they're still too limited up front to challenge Washington and Carolina in the Southeast, but I think there's a lot of potential there for them to surprise a lot of people. Never thought i'd see the day when I would give Don Waddell props, but he's put together a pretty decent team there.

What about the Conklin curse now in St. Louis!? Still, I bet the Blues and Jonh Davidson and Andy Murray would sign up for a trip to the Cup right now if they could...even if they will only lose it bc of the ever powerful Conklin curse. Perhaps the only way to break it is to start Ty, but once broken it may mean no Cup at all, not so much a Stanley Cup victory!
Here in Buffalo, we did our Conks time. I prefer to keep any discussion of him in the rear view.

Sal dump with a decent payoff. I love the look of Quincey, as I watched him a lot last year in his first full season since his trade from hell (detroit). Preissing, eh, we'll see and the 5th rouder is what they can make of it. Q 38 pts as a d man in his first full year on the cheap versus Smyth at 6.5 million and 58pts as a top line forward. Personally, I like the move and hope Hannan goes next. I do really love Smyth, including his work in Edmonton as he's a beast and never rests. However, his move was pretty much a needed thing right now.

I thought they had re signed Kovalev, but apparently the deal never got done
Gainey announced today that Kovalev is not coming back to MTL (http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=283860)
Makes sense...they got a little bit less than 10 in room, and they gotta re sign Plekanec.

Maple Leafs sign Francois Beauchemin (http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=283892)
That means the Leafs D now looks like Beauchemin, Schenn, Komisarek, Kaberle (who might still be dealt), Exelby, and Ian White/Jeff Finger. Holy Shit.

I really was (still holding out hope) that he would come back and help the development of Duchene and go out with a full season. He really didn't get the due he deserves and I'd really like to see him play once more. I can't help but think his hand and back are still not back to 100% and this is the only thing that could keep him from coming back in an Olympic year in which he very well could have been the captain or at least a key leader on the team, along with going out the right way in Colorado.

They're the oldest team in the league (along with New Jersey), and they have very little cap room...
I think they'll have a good regular season, but they'll go out early in the playoffs. Their two best defencemen, Lidstrom and Rafalski, are 39 and 35 apiece, and their next two, Stuart and Kronwall (who are both considerably overpaid), are pushing right up against 30. Where's the youth on the blue line there? The youngest guy there is Ericsson, who's 25.
They really need to start shipping out some of the older guys they have while they still have some value (like Holmstrom, Maltby, Draper, etc. etc), and rebuilding with youth. They've drafted terribly over the past decade (one of the league's biggest secrets; other than hitting the lottery with a few late round picks, they haven't done a thing in the draft of note), which I guess is understandable because they've finished so highly every year.
As i'm looking at it now, Holmstrom, Lidstrom, and Maltby are all UFAs after next season...I seriously doubt any of those guys comes back when their contracts are up. I bet they try to load up for one last run at the Cup, and then start tearing the whole thing down to build around Datsyuk, Zetterberg, and Franzen, all of whom are signed for the next billion years

One of the most egregious examples was a few years ago in Pittsburgh, where Lemieux and the ownership group there forced the city of Pittsburgh to pick up the tab for Consol Energy Center (which opens next year). They admitted afterward they had NO INTENTION of ever moving to KC, but used it as a way to force the City and the Commonwealth into footing the bill for their building.
The City paid 233 million for Heinz Field, and close to 200 million for PNC Park, both in the last decade, and now they've got to pay for Consol Energy Center. These fucking greedy owners leech off the fans that support them to the death, and just ask for more and more and more of your dollars.
The whole "stadium experience" just isn't worth it any longer. I'll go to maybe 4 or 5 games a year and spend the rest of the time watching the game in the relative comfort of my own home.

Patrick Kane's been a bad boy (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=4387102)
Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane, the top overall pick in the 2007 NHL draft, was arrested early Sunday morning in Buffalo, N.Y., and charged with robbery and other counts following an altercation with a cab driver in his hometown.
The 20-year-old Kane and his cousin, James M. Kane, 21, were taken into police custody at about 5 a.m. ET after allegedly punching the driver and taking $15 in fare they had given him after he said he didn't have 20 cents in change, a police report says. Police say the cousins apparently caught a cab from the city's downtown nightclub district at about 4 a.m. Sunday.
Buffalo police spokesman Michael DeGeorge says the cab driver suffered cuts to his face and his glasses were damaged after being struck in the face and head. Both Kanes were charged with felony robbery and misdemeanor counts of theft of services and criminal mischief.
His mugshot is hilarious...

I think they can make one last run under Lemaire.
They have no scoring, but with his system, they don't need scoring.
I think they can, too.
We have scoring. Parise is going to be even better this year. I don't know if Langenbruner will have the same offensive output, but he'll chalk up a few. I think Clarkson will add to his numbers. I also think that Elias will have a real good year.
Hell, I'm going to go on record as saying Shannahan will have a 20 goal season. Especially considering he's more comfortable with the system and will have training camp under his belt.

Boston is another team. Their current look is ok, but I liked the 80s-early 90s ones much, much better, especially the black one

I like the Minnesota one because its classic and unique at the same time. In a world where it seems like every single team has a black jersey, its a good look. It also reminds me of one of my other favorite unis, the classic Devils (and that Pittsburgh jersey in this photo is MUCH better than the one they have now)

They should have just let Balsillie buy the team already. I cannot fathom how they would rather steer franchises to corrupt businessmen (Boots Del Biaggio) than a guy swimming in cash, who WANTS to own a team. How afraid are they of a team moving to Hamilton or some area other than Phoenix? It just makes no sense to me...

I went to a Pens/Caps game at the booth a few years ago, and during one of the stoppages in play they were showing random fans around the arena on the jumbotron, and stopped at this one Pittsburgh fan. He's wearing a Pens 68 Jagr jersey, so the place starts booing him, till he turns around to reveal he's replaced the "R" in Jagr with a piece of paper that says "OFF" so it reads JagOFF. Made the whole place laugh and cheer him.

Alex Tanguay has signed with the Ning (http://www2.tbo.com/content/2009/aug/28/291659/bolts-sign-tanguay-one-year-deal/sports/)
Couple moves from Vancouver as well...picked up Christian Ehrhoff and Brad Lukowich from the Sharks, and signed Matheiu Schneider's corpse.
I think they are the team to beat in the West next year. They've got a really good defence now in front of Luongo (LOVE Bieksa), and got a lot of offensive pop. They're a damn good team.

I agree. I like what they're building there defensively (Ohlund, Hedman, Ranger, Meszaros, Walker and Lashoff aren't a bad D Corps), plus they've got some pretty decent depth there too between Krajicek, Smaby, Wishart and Mihalik. They've still got some offensive pop with Vinny hitting his prime years (if he can stay healthy), and Stamkos really came on at the end of last year.
There's not much more than that for them offensively, and they're paying Ryan Malone 6 million dollars each of the next two years, plus they've got the murderers row of Mike Smith, Karri Ramo, and Antero Nittymaki in goal, which = yikes.

Its their own fault...they can't afford to sign him.
They'll probably let Savard go after this season as well (and Lucic and Wheeler are both RFAs after this season)
And was it REALLY necessary to sign Derek Morris for one year at 3.3? Makes no sense to me.
I bet they would sure love the almost 2 million in cap space being eaten up by the Glen Murray, Patrick Eaves and Peter Schaefer buyouts (Murray's 1.3 comes off the books after this year, Eaves is on for another two years, and Schaefer's runs another 4 years)
