Still Donnie, how were said ratings when you were a mid-level team without two of the biggest stars in the game and a 1st overall pick goalie? It wasn't that good up there to say the least. Just like in Denver, the Avs drew full houses every game when on top or close with stars like Sakic and Forsberg in their prime, and now aren't even close to doing so with the ratings down as well. Sure it's still a very good hockey hotbed in the US, but it's not exactly fair to pick one year on your second Stanley Cup run to use as a litmus test.
However, we do have something on the likes of the NJ Devs and Ginger Wings who STILL have issues with selling out when on Stanley Cup runs with great teams. I should know, I saw 3 fucking games in NJ of the 2001 Stanley Cup Finals by walking up to the ticket booth day of and got great seats. Hell, I even sat with the Drury family at game 4 I believe, and they loved it I was an Avs fan and gave me a ton of Avs swag and beer throughout the game! My favorite item they gave me was a cool hat with 18 on the front and his name on the back over the semicircle in small script, along with 16W on the side (the mantra for the Avs that year). I got it signed later and everything and had a cool convo with him bc he couldn't figure out how I got one! At least I can still remember when the Avs were good! Ha!
I'll give you the year or two before Sid, but you would be surprsied by the loyalty around these parts. They expect a lot but I think that's reciprocal. The numbers are always good here. They've sold out a few seasons in a row at home.
Also, I'm all for people suppporting my team, but how do you have two teams? Not really sure how I feel about that.

The local news outlet just reported an estimated 250,000 have gathered for the parade that hasn't even started yet.
Say what you want about the 'Burgh, for better or worse, this has to be considered a top tier sports town.
Correction: 375,000 people estimated to be there today.

Like I said before to someone in here, ur confusing my PURE HATRED for the ginger wings for liking the Pens. Sure it's an East Conf team I have no issue with and can root for a little being originally from PA, but I sure as hell aren't a fan. Fallon put that in my avatar, not me. I put that thing all over the red wing fan pages just to fuck with them bc I knew they were going home losers being they had/have Hossa AND Conklin! The Conklin curse works three years in a row baby!

I am not a whore so I will not start a thread on this. I am a pens fan now. My reasoning is as follows:
1. I did not betray a fan alliance as I had no NHL team in Indy.
2. I see myself in this area for awhile.
3. I cannot and will not pull for the steelers (colts fan) and the highest paid triple A team (Pirates)
That is all.

The Winter Classic's going to be a doubleheader (http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=4270968)
The NHL is hoping to double down on the success of its Winter Classic by planning a second outdoor game for Jan. 1, 2010, according to multiple league sources.
The back-end of the outdoor doubleheader would be hosted by the Flames in Calgary's McMahon Stadium, the site of the opening and closing ceremonies for the 1988 Winter Olympics. The opponent is unknown but figures to be one of the other five Canadian-based franchises.
While there has been no official announcement, the first half of the Winter Classic twin bill likely will be hosted by the Boston Bruins at historic Fenway Park. Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals are rumored to be the Bruins' opponent.
What a monumental fucking embarrassment that awards show was last night.
I've seen high school productions that looked more professional.
And the musical guest was Chaka fucking Khan???

It was quite the trainwreck I agree, but what else can we expect from Bettman at this point. And not only was Chaka Khan ancient, it also is a zero fit for hockey...ESPECIALLY that fucking song. There were pretty much NO awesome vids looking back at the year's hits, saves, scores and playoffs. They lumped in the fucking Ross and Richard trophy presentations into one, while we endured seemingly 50 leadership, sportsmanship, charity work awards one by one, for 15 minutes a piece. Let's focus on the fucking game for fuck's sake and pick up the tempo/feel of the show as well while your at it. It looked more like a Florida AARP convention as opposed to the awards for the NHL.
Oh and someone get fucking Datsyuk a damn haircut!

They could take Hedman too....they've been holding their cards so close to the vest, that nobody knows what's going on. Toronto REALLY wants Tavares.
Its the proverbial row of dominoes...if Tavares goes 1, that means Hedman's going 2. If Hedman goes 1, that probably pushes Tavares down (and could send him to the Leafs)

Not necessarily true. Of late, many have moved up Matt Duchene into the #2 spot ahead of Hedman. Also, other scouts while not moving him based solely on stat comparisions (which can be dangerous), have called Duchene the most well rounded player in this draft. As it turns out, the Avs can wind up with either Hedman or Duchene in my mind. I'm not sure which is better to be honest, but I have had my mind set on Duchene for a while. I'm even more excited to see his stock rise so much. Side note, he's a long time Avs fan as well which is kind of cool.
I like the Isle fans am worried the Avs will drop the ball here as well. However, they really have the easiest pick in this whole draft....take whichever of the three is left. The top three, not two have surely garnered a TON of press in the hockey world.

Would Tampa take Duchene at 2 if Tavares went 1? They need help with their defence more than they need another centre. I think the Avs would be in good shape with either Duchene or Hedman.

Oh I agree on all those points and have felt the same way for a long time. Still, it depends on how much TB (who has had many top tier picks recently) wants to pick second versus getting more picks and or players overall. I'm not really worried about NYI making a move, but I do fear TB making one with the like of Toronto or any of the others looking to grab one of these guys. We'll see, but even so Hedman or Duchene will be a HUGE addition to the team.....granted Sherman/Lacroix and Sacco don't do something stupid themselves.

Here's an AMAZING article/analysis about the draft....I cannot recommend it highly enough (http://www.pensionplanpuppets.com/2009/6/21/920352/detroit-isnt-that-great-at)
He actually comes to a pretty interesting conclusion in one of his points, namely:
*whispers* Detroit isn't all that good at drafting
I actually really like Detroit, but I'm going to pick on them here because there's just a bit too much hype about their drafting prowess for my liking. "Detroit has the best scouting department in the NHL" is one of most repeated phrases in any draft discussion, but I'm not convinced that's true. Player development? Top notch. But actually consistently drafting NHL-calibre players? Not their forte.
If you refer back to the first chart posted above, you'll notice that Detroit is DEAD LAST in 3 of the 4 categories (% that made it to the NHL, % that played 200 games, # of games played per player drafted), and 27th in the other. That’s not good. Of course, drafting 2 franchise players in the late rounds makes up for that, but when the bulk of your drafted players end up being "busts", that's not a good sign.
Here’s a look at the players Detroit drafted in the 1st round since 1994. First of all - let's count all of the first round picks in 97,99, 01,02,03,04. Oh my goodness – there are none! Where did they go? Someone must have stolen them, because the most well managed team in the history of the NHL would never trade away draft picks, especially first rounders, since they realize how important they are and that no team can have any success without them. Second of all - not an overly impressive bunch besides Kronwall (and weirdly, all defencemen except for last year's pick).
http://cdn3.sbnation.com/imported_assets/189600/chart_3.jpg
And here’s the full list of players Detroit drafted in 98 and 99 (the years Datsyuk and Zberg were drafted). There's no denying that they were both great late-draft steals, but given the other players selected by Detroit before and after, you could argue that they just got lucky. Really really lucky.

don't forget that tampa picked up one of the bruins top defense prospects, matt lashoff at the deadline and he stepped in and amlost immediately took on a top spot playing abot 22 mins per night. now whether that enough for them to build around back there, and roll the dice on another forward and let them dump a st louis or lecavalier this off season reamins to be seen. lashoff is solid and can get it done given tho opportunity.

I hated that deal when the B's made it, and I still hate it today.
The fact that Lashoff stepped in and IMMEDIATELY became TB's top DMan indicates to me there is a really really really big problem there with defence, and adding Hedman is their best move IMO. It shows you how much those retards shot themselves in the foot by getting rid of Dan Boyle for Matt Carle (who they almost immediately turned around for Steve Eminger, who played there most of the year, and then they dealt him to Florida, so they pretty much traded Boyle and ended up with Noah Welch, Steve Downie and a 3rd Round pick....eeeesh).
Right now, TB's defencemen are
Meszaros (who they gave Boyle's money to for some reason, after deciding Boyle cost too much)
Paul Ranger
Lukas Krajicek (who's an RFA)
Lashoff (who's an RFA)
Matt Smaby (who's a UFA)
Welch (who's a UFA)
Marek Malik (UFA)
Josef Melichar (UFA)
Cory Murphy (UFA)
St. Louis still has another two years left on his deal. I think they have a decent set of forwards with him, Vinny, and Stamkos (who really came on as the year progressed last year) and some decent role players like Malone and Halpern (if his knee isn't still a mess), but with a defence that's littered with those names above, it only makes too much sense for them to take Hedman...he's better than defenceman they have right now, by a long shot
In a related note, the Barrie/Koules partnership may be over with....they're meeting today with Commissioner Bettman to decide who has control over personnel decisions for the franchise

You can't see it in any of those pics, but Lemieux's pool seemed surprisingly modest in comparison to his mansion/castle. In 91-92 they broke it wasted in his pool the night they won it. This party seemed a bit more tame and family oriented.
That being said, I saw a bunch of the guys out last weekend. Fleury, Kennedy, and Kunitz were at the bar that I happened to be in that evening. They literally are gods around here now. They shut down Carson St. (main bar drag in the southside) when Fluery and Crosby carried the cup on top of this truck and were mobbed by hundreds of people. This was like a week after they won.

"Game 7 of the Stanley Cup final June 12 drew a 42.2 rating in Pittsburgh, making it the highest local rating for an NHL game since the league started tracking local ratings in 1995.
The game also drew a 61 share -- meaning 61 percent of all televisions in the Pittsburgh region that were on that night were tuned to the Penguins' 2-1 victory in Game 7 against the Detroit Red Wings.

Shit, the Avs have a shot at even Tavares as of the latest rumors. Some say the Isles are going Duchene now, and that probably means Hedman to TB and Tavares to Colorado. Seriously, I'm not sure which of these three I want more, but I'm stoked to get one of them!

It better not be Duchene. TSN plans to show fan reaction at the Coli. If JT isn't the pick, you will see the Coli being burnt down. People will storm out like year. By the time they interview Duchene over the video board, 5 people will be left.

Since when were the Islander fans out there considered such draft gurus. They simply have their heart set on Tav, and in reality all three top picks should be awesome in little time. Burke of Toronto has tried daily to trade for the number 1 pick to no avail, yet he is convinced Snow and the Isle are going with Duchene. The kid really is good, and Snow hasn't ever seemingly been influenced by the fans over the years. And hey, fuck them, this team is moving to KC in 2010 anyway!

Which is why they should pick Hedman...and then use that 26 million in cap space they have to sign the Sedins.
Can you imagine that (potential) team in a few years with the Sedins, Okposo, Bailey, and Hedman and Streit running the PP?? That's a damn good team.

Theyve already signed Emery (http://www.philly.com/inquirer/sports/20090612_Gonzo___Will_Emery_need_a_net_.html)
I haven't heard anything about Esche either, other than that they've talked to him and possibly could sign him to back up Emery.
From my quick reading about Esche now, he's still under contract to his KHL team, and they won't let him go without some form of compensation/replacement

Thanks Mudo Thats the first I heard of the contract with the khl hopefully they can sign them both, if nothing else it would surely be one of the roughest goaltending tandems ever. Would certainly take it back to the good old days of Hextall and such. And there wouldn't be too much net crashing with either of those two.

The Islanders have acquired the 16th and 77th selections this year for the 26th, 37th, 62nd and 92nd picks.
To me, that's just not worth it AT ALL bc the players after 10 can be anywhere and there will be plenty there at 26. You now have two less picks and truly only got ten spots on it. If they didn't have the extra picks, this trade would have been way worse no doubt....still.

They're really really good (http://www.fromtherink.com/2009/4/18/843358/why-the-sedins-have-arrived-as)
# Daniel and Henrik both finished with 82 points, good enough to be tied for 13th in the NHL during the season.
# Putting aside the limitations of plus-minus for the moment, they also finished 14th and 17th among forwards in that category as well.
# The only players Daniel had fewer even-strength points than this season were Malkin, Ovechkin, Crosby, Parise, Datsyuk and Havlat. Add Iginla to the list for those ahead of Henrik
That's pretty impressive.
Consider, too, that the Sedins have for the most part been rolled out against other teams' top lines (with a varied group of linemates) and that puts them in a class with some of the best players in the NHL.
Consider the fact that they also turned this guy into a 30 goal scorer

How does Philly make this work Cap wise? They've got to move Briere, but those retards signed him to such a massive contract I can't think of anyone who would take it. I HATED that Briere contract when they signed it.
Those guys in Anaheim ALWAYS wanted a ton for Pronger. They wanted Alzner, Varlamov and picks when the Caps were trying to get him, which they (wisely) turned down. They just found someone stupid enough to trade a ton for him.
Magnus Paajarvi Svenson, this kid looks 14.

As he should have. Schenn is a monster, and their best Dman, and he may have had a revolt among his fan base if he had dealt him. Why cripple your D to get Tavares? It would be like cutting off your nose to spite your face.

Oh and I truly didn't think I could hate ESPN any more than I did, but it wasn't the case. Today I was working on some reports and had Sports Center on for their 1.5 hours sports rundown. The NHL draft got a 20 second mention at the VERY END of the program. The program ended at 7:30, it was 7:29 when they attempted to cover it and gave more time to the hosts signing off.
It's one thing to back off bc you don't have the contract, it's another to put garbage on in front of it, not covering it and purely dropping the ball on an interesting bit of sports news. Sure it's not a lead story or even CLOSE to the NFL draft, but it is sports news with some pretty big stories in there (Pronger & Bouwmeester trades, Toronto's inability to get there move and forfeited pick at 118, the top ten picks and many others). It really is simply weak.

I couldn't be any happier with getting Hedman. Tavares is as one dimensional as they come. He'll be a great PP'er and he'll be great in front of the net, but he can't skate for shit and he doesn't have move one on the opposite end of the ice. Duchene and Kane are by far the most complete forwards in this draft, but Hedman is by far the most complete overall player in this draft.

While there is some truth to this, Tavares has plenty of potential on D and actually played pretty well in both ends for Canada in their last championship run (which he had a LOT to do with). Also, Tavares is EXACTLY what they needed on Long Island to save it's fanchise and get a new venue. I bet we'll soon be hearing about the new proposed arena very shortly, and by this I mean within his first two years barring a HUGE escalation in our economic situation. This kid, d development or not, will pair soooo well with Okposo that I think he'll easily get around twice as many points as last year. I think they did the right thing in picking an offensive specialist being that Streit led the team in points as a defenseman by 17 fucking points. This team is truly an offensive black hole, and now they have a catalyst and a few other young guys ready to help out.
Truth be told, I think all three first picks are the perfect fit in terms of need for each. Sure any of them would work for either, but all three hit the top needs of their teams as well as possible based on both need and talent available.

I was going to say the same. As far as Tavares skating ability, The same was said about Zach Parise. You think the Devils are regretting that pick?

I don't understand this deal at all from MTL's perspective. They gave up Higgins (who's an RFA, but still), and took on Gomez' massive salary for the next two years.
Its like Bob Gainey is trying to turn the Habs into the NHL's version of the Knicks

UPDATED, 5:31 P.M.: I’ve been told that Heatley is coming to the Rangers tonight. Not sure what the Rangers are giving up to get him, but they can fit him under the cap now.
When does the season schedule come out?
Usually mid-July.
I heard today at the gym that the Detroit Red Wings are changing their colors to pink to move accurately represent their style of play and "questionable" fan base.

I disagree about CGY...they've got close to 40 million dollars wrapped up in Bouwmeester, Jokinen, Iginla, Kiprusoff, Langkow, Phaneuf and Regher....thats an awful lot of money wrapped up in those 7 guys (they can only pay the rest of the guys they have left an average of a little over a million apiece....thankfully for them they were able to dump Jim Vandermeer's awful contract on the Coyotes). Plus, they're going to lose Cammalleri today, so where does the secondary scoring come from outside of Iginla? Jokinen was a major bust for them last year. And can they really expect Kiprusoff to keep playing 75 games a year?
At this point, I put them behind Vancouver in that division, and if EDM can get themselves Heatley (and dump Penner's awful contract at the same time), I'll put them behind them too.

Right now, there's nothing there but Huet and Antti Niemi (who's played all of 3 games). Maybe Corey Crawford (who also has very little experience)
I know there would be some teams interested in Huet, but its his salary that's so prohibitive. He's owed 5.6 a year over the next two years, and I'm not sure a lot of teams would want to invest that in a guy that really isn't all that good

sorta......... They needed someone who can be a starter if DP goes down again. Last year it was guys who are backups/AHL starters. Instead they wanted someone who is a legit starter. Plus, they drafted 2 goalies in the draft just in case as well. But Garth was asked if he was preparing for life without DP and he did say yes. Well way to go out and pick the top two that have ever had that lable pushed on them. Not to mention Luc had an awesome pair of hands of him to compensate, and Hull actually never did skate, he just played offense and watched the other side of the ice from just outside the offensive zone. He literally sat on the off wing all day in 90% of his games and utilized his main weapon, his shot. So yes, they ended up putting up some nice careers in terms of stats, but Hull especially didn't all of a sudden become a skating stud out there. Most of his teams worked around his weakness, putting the right guys out there with him since he refused to change his play.

There is a possible hint here on another move being set up. This move good possibly be the first step to moving Phaneuf for Heatley, but we'll see. I personally would keep this D intact, bc NOBODY would want to play their big three in a 7 game series...especially if Kipper comes back to form behind them. Not only is Anderson a very good move for the Avs, Emery is a very very good goalie with #1 abilities at the top quarter of the NHL. It's his mentality and teaming with his locker room outbursts that kill his value, not his abilities on the ice. The signing of Lappy in Philly will help control the locker room, but they'll need to get him in line REAL fast. Worked out fairly well. He played decently enough during the season, and Varlamov took over in the playoffs.
I'll defend that deal because it was (a) a short term deal (2 years), and (b) Theodore was the best goaltender available at the time, seeing as they were stiffed by Cristobal Huet. I'm MUCH happier with a short term Theodore deal than a 5 year Huet deal that would probably end up sending Neuvirth or Varlamov out of town in the end.
And that expiring contract of his becomes a really really good trading chip

Fuck. Hawks looked so good in the playoffs, now they have to overcome the Hossa curse.
What about the Conklin curse now in St. Louis!? Still, I bet the Blues and Jonh Davidson and Andy Murray would sign up for a trip to the Cup right now if they could...even if they will only lose it bc of the ever powerful Conklin curse. Perhaps the only way to break it is to start Ty, but once broken it may mean no Cup at all, not so much a Stanley Cup victory!

Hey, maybe the Blues could get an outdoor game soon. Seems to be Ty's thing.

Sucks to see Komi go to Toronto. I would have liked to see the Isles upgrade the D a bit.
I heard today at the gym that now without Hossa, the Detroit Red Wings are changing their colors to pink with little red heart-shaped polka dots to more accurately represent their style of play and "questionable" fan base.

Nice. Now the unis will match Gvac's manziere and footy pajamas.

Pahlsson, Samuel
Sullivan, Steve
Both are now off the table with Pahlsson and his defensive forward abilities moving to Ken Hitchcock's Columbus (SURPRISE), and Sullivan staying in Nashville. I think both are solid pieces, but Sullivan has to stay healthy. If he does, he'll be a steal bc he's a point a game player when healthy and plays well in the D end also. Pahlsson fits a Hitchcock system to a T and will surely be a huge piece for Columbus as they continue to get better and go deeper in the playoffs. A LOT hinges on Mason in net, but that system will only help.

Gaborik to the Rangers
60 games played, over under?
I go under.

Habs filling that cap room quickly with the additions of Gionta now as well.
Here's their additions so far... they now have Gionta, Gomez, Cammalleri, Gil and Spacek.
I love Cammalleri's speed and abilities, but Gomez is a weird pickup as that trade wasn't friendly to the Habs.

They had about 30 million to work with.

How are the Habs going to fit under the cap?
Most of their team from last year were/are UFAs (the only significant RFA they had after they dealt Higgins is Plekanec), so they had a bajillion dollars in Cap room

The devils won't, but I'd love to see them make a serious move on Havlat.

Yah, tsn had it wrongly listed at 5.75 per year at first, but 7.5 is risky to say the least.
Understanding he missed most of his time due to one injury that he let nag until he had to have surgery, but his numbers don't even warrant this contract in his full years. He's not the best playmaker, but surely would fit nicely with someone like Drury who likes to move the puck.

They took all the money they saved yesterday by dumping Gomez and spent it on Brashear and Gaborik. If I were a Ranger fan I'd be beyond angry

Considering they lost Naslund, I'd say that they are pretty much the same team as they were last year.

TSN's also reporting the Rangers have signed Donald Brashear
EDIT: That deal's gone through....two years, 2.8 million (total)
Between him and Avery, I hope Tortorella has plans for a couple of very solid penalty killing lines.

They are always quiet on the FA market but always seem to make due. Until they sink below playoff level, I'd trust in your GM.

He is a hall of famer and one of, if not the, best GM in sports.
I'd just like something to happen. We need to make our D better and we also need more help scoring. Parise and Elias aren't enough.

Brashear's minutes will be quite minor, and expect a good number of healthy scratches which makes the contract even more questionable. Fuck, he'll be 38 in January.
