does buffalo not count? because now they have 3... two of which are lousy, and the rags squeeked in so in reality they have 3 sucky teams.
eh. Buffalo may be apart of NY but no one cares about them outside of there own city.

Some knucklehead Pittsburgh fan makes an Ovechkin death threat on a message board (http://www.washingtontimes.com/weblogs/in-the-room/2009/may/07/threat-against-ovechkin/)
The threat was made on the Penguins' official message board during Game 2. It was on page 58 of the official game 2 thread, but it has sense been removed.
It was made by someone with the handle "pensforlife87" and it said "Im killing Ovechkin i'll go to jail i dont care anymore."
EDIT:
And here is ye olde screen shot (courtesy of Puck Daddy)

that pensforlife87 is a douche bag, to come out and say he's going to kill ovechkin because he's beating the penguins is pretty fucking stupid. his undying man-love for crosby is clouding his judgement. then i alluded to a comment he [ovechkin] made during allstar weekend to tim thomas after he smashed into the boards... anything else? i'm not insulting your precious pittsburgh, i actually like the pens.
if i in some way hurt your feelings i apologize, i would say the same thing if a bruins fan said some stupid shit about eric stall, or cole. unless you are pensforlife87...?

he pulled a similar move on wideman earlier in the season, it wasn't as bad but he's kinda making a name for himself with hits like that. the whole game i was waiting for one of the pens to knock his teeth out, i have to say i'm a little disappointed.

congratulations to the Pens, great series,... i think everyone knows, if you don't play a perfect game in the post-season against the Pens, you lose. i think with our young core group we'll be competitive, but who ever thought our goalie would be subject to a financial bribe????

so you're really going to shit on varlamov after he took you as far as he did? the WHOLE team sucked balls last night, it wasn't all him. the caps were never in that game. blame anyone you want, but its silly to put it all on him. maybe of ovechkin wasn't gliding around all night hoping someone would give him the puck (and just sitting on the ice admiring crosby's breakaway after turning the puck over) the outcome would have been different. they gave up after they got down by three, all of them. and how about mr awesome mike green? what was he, a -4 last night? go ahead, pin it on the rookie and pull out some conspiracy theory.
Fantastic season - great series - the Caps choked when it mattered the most. What a night to play the worst game from the best season - wow! - just inane.
And what a night for Fleury to finally get strong. Caps should have had his number the whole time - he was definately beatable, until last night - but it became clear that after the shitty ref calls, the Caps collectively got the memo that it wasn't going to be. Game 4 and on they were just going through the motions for much of the games - Game 6 really was a fluke. Ovie can't do it all. Varlamov can't do it all. I'm sure if Washington had won Game 7, the NHL would have found a way to make it a Best out of 9.

Varlamov turned 21 two weeks ago, and has played a grand total of 19 NHL games (6 in the regular season, and 13 in the playoffs). If any Caps fan takes a shit on him, they're a complete idiot.
I mean, really, how much did you expect the guy to do? He made some great saves, and kept the Caps from being swept. Replace him with Theodore? The series is over in 5 at best. They were outplayed the entire series, and that's not Varlamov's fault. Look at the volume of shots the Pens put on him:
36, 36, 42, 28, 42, 42 and 18 (last night, after a period and a half)
Compared to how many the Caps put on Fleury:
26, 33, 23, 22, 31, 24, 21
That says to me right there, that the Pens controlled the entire series. That DC's inability to mount any kind of forecheck, keep Pittsburgh from long periods of puck possession, get the puck deep into the Pens' offensive zone was WAY more to blame for their loss in this series than anything Varlamov did.
If you don't forecheck, get shots on net, or play defence, you're not gonna win playoff serieseseseseseses. In retrospect, its absolutely stunning that this went 7 games, and was within one goal in OT of being 3-0 Caps at one point (shows you the main weak link in Pittsburgh is Marc-Andre Fleury, because he gave up some pretty bad goals, and Sergei Gonchar is a huge part of their offence. If he can't go against Boston/Carolina, its not going to go well for Pittsburgh).
Wow, are you awful...

. maybe of ovechkin wasn't gliding around all night hoping someone would give him the puck (and just sitting on the ice admiring crosby's breakaway after turning the puck over) the outcome would have been different. .
I'm not going to say that Crosby isn't a great player, but he cherry picks. It's not like Ovechkin doesn't make plays happen as well. The Caps had trouble getting the puck out of their zone. The offense didn't fall back enough to help the defense. And to put the whole series on Ovechkin is real shitty. Hockey is a team sport. You can't win with just one person putting in the effort.
Really a shame, too - for the first time in my life (including the Caps 1998 Stanley Cup run, but maybe exclusing the Bullets win in the 70s) Washington was REALLY behind a sports team other than the Redskins.
Here's a blurb from DCRTV...
Comcast SportsNet's Wednesday night Capitals loss in playoff Game 7 got a 7.6 rating among men age 18-49 in the DC market. Beating even "Idol" in the demo. The game did a 3.4 rating in the demo in Baltimore, doubling an Orioles game on MASN. Also, CSN earned a 5.3 average household rating in DC with Game 6 on Monday. The Baltimore area chocked up a 3.4. That broadcast peaked at 238,000 households at 9:45 PM - to see the Capitals win in overtime. For the target demo of men age 18-49, Game 6 received a 6.0 rating and peaked with a 9.1.....
((sigh))
That game could have been a thing of greatness, but it becomes something else to forget.

i agree, and i wasn't really trying to pin it on one guy, i was trying to say that they lost that one as a team. it wasn't any one persons fault. and to say it was varlamov is fucking insane. the kid stood on his head just about every game he was in and they can thank him for even making it past the rangers. i'm not big into blaming one guy for a loss, you win as a team you lose as a team. i just really noticed how terrible ovechkin is/was in his own end. and like i said, after going down by three the wind was taken out of their sails and they fucking phined it in from there on. it was tough to watch. even down by four i didn't count them out, but it looked like they just layed down, to me anyway.
and i agree, aka, i was really impressed with the fact the fans cheered varlamov when he was pulled, and to me it didn't seem like they were cheering for the change, it was more a "thanks for taking us this far, kid" and i was impressed again that the place was still pretty much full at the end and they gave their team a nice round of applause. that was very cool.
that said... GO BRUINS!!

Ha, cherry picks?? How is that even possible? It's not street hockey, the NHL does have offsides..

Really a shame, too - for the first time in my life (including the Caps 1998 Stanley Cup run, but maybe exclusing the Bullets win in the 70s) Washington was REALLY behind a sports team other than the Redskins.

That game could have been a thing of greatness, but it becomes something else to forget.
The ratings fucking killed here...
http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/09135/970318-61.stm
From the article....
The deciding game in the series was the most-watched NHL game on FSN, surpassing Game 6, which drew a 24.2 rating and Game 5, which had a 21.2.
"The record ratings are further affirmation that Pittsburgh is a very rich and deep hockey market," said Ted Black, senior vice president and general manager of FSN Pittsburgh.
Game 7 also was the highest-rated NHL game for any FSN regional sports network and peaked at a 31.4 rating (361,000 households) from 9:15-9:30 p.m.

It was hardly a secret that many of the Capitals played hurt during the playoffs, and McPhee and the players revealed Friday just how bad the injury situation was.
Defensemen Tom Poti and John Erskine each played with a broken foot. Semin had a badly sprained thumb that made it difficult for him to handle his stick. Mike Green had an ailing shoulder joint.
Ovechkin? He had groin and wrist injuries and said he wouldn't have been playing if it were the regular season. He hurt the groin during the Rangers series, yet he went on to tally eight goals and six assists against the Penguins.
Boudreau did not want to discuss the injuries, lest he be perceived as making excuses. The good news is that none of them are expected to require surgery.
"I'd love to sit here and say, 'Hey, we were so banged up we had nowhere to go,' but I'm sure the other teams are so banged up as well," Boudreau said. "All our key players had an injury."

They do. But I'm thinking more of how some players hang out at center ice and wait for the puck to be moved to them. Crosby has done this. As has Jagr. Not taking anything away from them as players, but they do that.
Let me also say that Crosby has made some damn fine plays in his own end.

The conversations surrounding Tampa Bay Lightning forward Vincent Lecavalier are likely to heat up as we get closer to July 1, when the no-trade clause on his contract kicks in.
The two teams mentioned most when Lecavalier's name comes up seem to be the Montreal Canadiens and Los Angeles Kings. With regards to the Kings, defenceman Jack Johnson is one of the players mentioned as possibly being involved in any deal with Tampa.

Chiarelli is clearly in a pickle if he intends to ink top restricted free agents David Krejci and Phil Kessel (both headed for surgery and extended rehabs) to new deals. Based on leaguewide speculation, it will cost a minimum $6 million per annum to keep both on the payroll, with higher estimates pegging their combined salaries at $9 million. All in all, not possible, unless Chiarelli offloads Patrice Bergeron ($4.75 million) or Michael Ryder ($4 million) or convinces the likes of, say, Marc Savard ($5 million) or Marco Sturm ($3.5 million) to surrender their no-trade clauses.

fuck kessel, sign krejci, the kid is fucking awesome. in my opinion kessel is what he is, soft, lacks hustle and grit. krejci however, continues to improve and makes the guys around him better, kessel not so much. and he has one move that works maybe 1 out of ten times he tries. . the issue here is, bergeron (a fan favorite) got fucked up with his first concussion and hasn't been the same. his 4.75 was a steal when they inked it, but for 8 goals 31 assists in 64 games there is no room for him here, especially if the cap is going down. i like patrice, but he's not the same player he was, tough one here. and it gets even better next summer.

NHL 10 sounds awesome... (http://sports.espn.go.com/videogames/news/story?id=4164444)
First person fights?
Turtling?
"The other big thing you can do is turtle if you don't want to fight. I can pick a fight with a superstar like Sidney Crosby(notes), and if there are no tough guys on the ice, Crosby will take the fight. But if I have Crosby in a fight, I might not want him to get hurt because you can get hurt in a fight, so I can turtle by pressing a button and he will just go down to the ice.
"On the other hand, if you have tough guys on the ice, to protect Sidney Crosby, a tough guy will jump in and fight for Crosby. That's a really cool feature and something that I've never seen in a hockey [video] game before. And it plays into our whole Team Toughness feature because you need to have tough guys on your team to protect your superstars."
Scrums??! I've ALWAYS wanted scrums in my hockey video games...there's only been one that I can recall that's ever had it
"Not only can you hit guys after the whistle, but now there are going to be penalties after the whistle if you go a bit too crazy like slashing a guy from behind into the boards. There are scrums after almost every play in the playoffs, so we wanted to add that in the game, and there is an effect for it.
"Another thing is that if you shoot the puck at my goalie after a whistle, my tough guy will come knock you on your ass."
This sounds cool too...
"Another cool thing we added this year is line matching at the opening face-off. So for the first time, you can put out your fourth line to start a game to go against the first line of the away team in order to try and intimidate them right away. We're even giving a little bit of an advantage to the home team by enabling them to pick a line after the away team picks theirs."
One of the things that really irks me about NHL 09 is the fact that I can't match lines, and my D pairs are pretty much wedded to what forward line I put out (like if after a play I switch to my top line, it will automatically put my top D pair out with them). I was able to do matching in 08, and was upset to see it taken out of 09 (along with the control system I used forever, I hate how they forced me to use the "new" controls).
"On the other hand, you have to play smart. You don't want to just hit someone from behind because we're adding a lot of penalties. You don't want to be stupid, you don't want to play too dirty, especially on your EA Sports Hockey League team. Every team is going to need at least one tough guy or they're going to get run over. At the same time we don't want this to be a gimmick. Being intimidated doesn't mean that all your players drop 10 points in overall attributes. That's not what this is. That's not hockey. What's going to change are the behaviors of players. If they're going to get hit, they might bobble a pass. This has nothing to do with attributes, it has to do with how your team is playing at the time."
Game sounds really really great...sucks that I have to wait 5 more monfs for it to come out

No one is more surprised than me as to how well the Wings have played. I thought their age and goaltending would be their undoing and that they'd be long gone by now.
I too foresee a rematch of last year, but I think it's going to be the proverbial passing of the torch and the Pens will best them.
It reminds me of back in the 80's when the Islanders swept the young Edmonton Oilers. The very next year the same two teams met and the Oilers crushed the Isles, ending one dynasty and starting another one.

The wings won't win it this year, don't you worry. It'll be Hawks/Pitt, and the Pens will win out in 6.
As for the goalies, all but Carolina are weak for final four teams in a Cup playoff year. Unfortunately, Pitt has WAY too much for their shitty D to handle, and it also hides the shitty play of their goalie (Fleury), just the same as Detroit's play does for Osgood. The coaching of the Wings is easily the best in my mind, and that's the main reason outside of calls (sorry they get so fucking many for a team filled with divers like Zet and Dat)....but the coach is top shelf (that hurts to say).
The Hawks took a huge blow the other day though with Havlat going down, but we're yet to see how they adapt/man up after the hit. Overall, the hit was clean even if the guy didn't touch the puck. Sure it was violent and Kron has a history of it, but it's the fucking NHL. While I don't think it's a penalty one bit, I DO think the Hawks HAVE to lay out Zet, Dat and Lind all fucking day. If not, they lose. If you don't answer a violent hit like that on a top player, you simply don't win in the playoffs. The skill players on Detroit should keep their heads up. However, this is Q we're talking about, and he's not the brightest coach in the world. This team is so fucking talented and wins in spite of him, that much I assure you.

Yes, there will be a sheet of ice in Fenway Park for a Jan. 1 Winter Classic. It's a done deal, Bruins vs. either the Capitals or Flyers. The league will make it official at the start of July, with a splashy media event in the old ballpark. NHL free agency begins July 1, which grabs headlines around league cities (except for Phoenix, of course) for 2-3 days. The Sox play at home July 3-12. If the league wants the day for full media attention, it likely will wait for July 13-14 to make official all details, including how to purchase tickets.

Not only was Q outcoached, his poise yesterday was a joke. His team played EXACTLY the way a supremely talented group would under an awful coach. Still, the Wings get more bs calls in their favor only to second to the Pens. Everytime the Hawks picked up the hitting, they called a penalty. I'm really angry at the reffing this year in the playoffs as it's starting to resemble that of the NBA reffed games in that they seemingly already picked the teams "they" want in the finals.
Also, I don't/can't understand how they have YET to answer that huge hit on Hvlat. A team simply can't win without showing that they're willing to defend and answer in situations like that. Last night they had a shot too since the game was all but over. Sure there were scraps and scrums, but the fucking WINGS were the aggressors and drew calls, not the opposite.

COME ON DS! Holmstrom punches people on every play, hits people on their way to changes on the bench and the wings get a PP. Then there's a scrum at the end of the period and the refs call WALKER for being there and it was a HUGE call (BS) in this game. It's hockey, you either call it all, or none and as someone who plays I prefer you keep the arm dowm unless it's a sure thing. They claimed this is what they were going for, yet called the Hawks only in multiple scrums. If you think one should put out a hit with nothing but intent to injure (legal but what the Kron hit was) on a top player and reap no rewards, you haven't played the game. Bettman continues to pussify this game with his direction and the way he wants it to flow. I'm positive he made it a point to make sure those refs called this game tight for the "public image" of the game after that hit to "control" this nationally televised series. I use nationally televised series very loosely too.

While we agree on Q, the talent on this team isn't even a question. Kane, Toews, Sharp, Versteeg, Bufdkjaifji2f2jjqjfidjag (spelling) and plenty more. While I agree (as I've stated they/Q lost control) the Hawks needed to control themselves better, they also STILL had to answer that hit with one on Zett or some other skill player. Not so much the punch or elbow shot after every whistle, but a big/legal hit with no intent other than laying the motherfucker out showing two can play that game if that's what they're looking for. Show them that if they want to go that route, ur game. Trust me, no team wants it this late in the playoffs, especially looking down the shot at a Cup in the next round.

even with the big names nursin injuries the wings are way more talented than the hawks,i dont want to see any more players get hurt cuz the hawks are out of it and they know it,this whole series has been dump and grind and be a thug by the hawks cuz they dont have the passing, speed or goal scorers that the wings have,oh and i have played the game and appreciate the crispness that is the wings.sure they're a more european type of team but its alot more fun to watch than the boring mess that is 80% of the NHL teams

I never said Crosby is overrated. In fact, I believe I said he is a great player. The NHL sure does love to nurse him though. I agree with Spoon in saying that Ovechkin and Malkin are better.

I didn't say you had but others did. Yeah, I used to think Ovechkin was clearly the best but now I'm not so sure. He's not nearly as strong on both ends as the other two.

Sorry...that should have been "last" summer instead of "this" summer
They threw a boatload of cash at Jagr, which he took because he's (a) got massive gambling debts and (b) its all tax free. There was a pretty crazy rumour that Jagr was coming back to the NHL at the deadline to play for Edmonton

But they're still trying to determine whether Richard Thomas was telling the truth when he said he is the biggest steroid provider in Central Florida and that he sold mostly to professional athletes, including those on the Washington Capitals hockey team and Washington Nationals baseball team.
The Thomases, who live in Lakeland, were arrested Tuesday after a tip from the Philadelphia office of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Sheriff Grady Judd said that detectives seized an estimated $200,000 in illegal steroids when the pair was arrested.
A spokesman for the Capitals said the team is gathering information and expects to have a statement later. Messages seeking comment weren't immediately returned by Major League Baseball or the National Hockey League.
Washington Nationals President Stan Kasten said the team is using its resources to learn more about the case, according to the Washington Times. Capitals defenseman Donald Brashear told Baltimore radio station WJFK-AM he wasn't aware of steroid use by teammates.

Gather 'round, kiddies, and let ol' Uncle Gvac tell you about the 1983 and 1984 Stanley Cup Finals.
You see, there was a dynasty named The New York Islanders (seriously! I'm not joking!) and in 1983 they were going for their 4th Cup in a row. In their was was a young upstart team called the Edmonton Oilers. They were an offensive dynamo, loaded with talented young kids. Hardly anyone on the team was over 24 or 25 years old. They didn't pay much attention to defense, though, and the wily old veterans from the Island swept 'em in 4 straight.
The very next year the two teams met again. Apparently those Oilers learned a thing or three from their humiliation the previous year, and they not only shored up their defense but skated circles around the aging Cup champions. They halted the Islanders quest for a 5th Cup and started a dynasty of their own.
Anyone else see an eerie parallel?

I couldn't believe what I was seeing when I saw them trounce the Islanders.
It truly was the end of an era. Back then we got SportsChannel on cable and I watched all the Islander games. It seemed like Bossy, Trottier, Gillies, Nystrom, et al would win the Cup as long as they wanted to.
Watching them get dismantled was a shock, and it seems like the organization still hasn't recovered.

I don't. By 84 those Islander teams were washed up and worn out. If this was Detroit's 5th consecutive finals, i'd say you were right, but when you hear Gretzky describe how the Islanders looked after their Cup win over Edmonton, you'd see why they were beaten the next year. Detroit has worked wonders under the salary cap stockpiling talent and has some really great young players (like Franzen, Helm, Cleary etc.) and they don't have the mileage on them (yet) that the Drive For Five Islanders had.
And, don't forget...the Isles had to play three straight games in Edmonton in that series because the league changed the format that year...thats a pretty big deal

Were you even alive back then??
The Islanders had added young talent too, namely Pat Flatley and Pat LaFontaine. Both were under 20. The rest of the team was in their late 20's and early 30's, too. It's not like they were ANCIENT.
Hell, Bossy and Trots were only 27, and Potvin was only 30.
This Detroit team has a lot of young talent, but the goaltender has played over his head, and Lidstrom is old and injured.

Bossy was out of the game by 30 because of his back, Trottier had 111 points that year, but never got to 100 again, and Potvin was out of the game by 34.
5 consecutive Cups is a LOT of mileage. Detroit's not there yet.

If Fleury showed up in either of the first two games the Pens would be up 2-1 now and with home ice advantage. Sorry, you're wrong again. Both goalies are AWFUL in this series by the way.

And when i posted that the Wings were up 2-1 in game 3 with a 2-0 series lead. Man, what an insane thing i said. No logical person would ever think what I thought.
Too bad you claimed there was no difference bt these two pitt teams, so yah, good point. The bottom line is this team is poised, has taken the play to the wings plenty of times only to be beaten by the wings getting away with covering pucks in the crease (twice it should have been a goal) and some CRAZY bounces in their favor both games in Detroit. You basically said they were the same based on nothing and you probably haven't watched a minute of the series yet. Just shut up.

I thought the Pens were finished after Detroit scored that quick goal to tie it up... they live to fight another day though.
Lets go Islanders!

So far, but this may change things. Also, I'd be cool with Jaques Lemaire or Sutter coming on board. Hell, perhaps Lemaire can pull Harding over too!
Everything different helps people.

Looks like Emery to the Flyers is a done deal (http://www.csnphilly.com/pages/landing_09?Panaccio-Flyers-to-Sign-G-Emery=1&blockID=56999&feedID=717)
PITTSBURGH – Barring a collapse in negotiations, the Flyers are expected to sign Ray Emery as their starting goalie for next season.
Several general managers at the Stanley Cup Final consider the matter a “done deal.” Emery was Ottawa’s property until released by the Senators last June.
Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren declined to confirm what others are saying at the Cup Final.
“We’ve had conversations with his agent [J.P. Barry] about a lot of things,” Holmgren said. “But I’m not going to comment on our internal discussions of players.”
Barry told CSNPhilly.com he is confident a contract will get done.
"We have been talking several weeks now," Barry said from Calgary, Alberta. "Paul has done due diligence on Ray. I'm hopeful it will lead to a contract."
Sun Media in Canada is reporting that it's a one-year deal.
There's just no way this is going to end well...at least its a one year deal, so they're not committing to anything long term
But in all honesty, is he really THAT much of an upgrade over Nittymaki or Biron?
