If you could have been present to witness any event in sports history, what would it be?

Mine easily would have been Secretariat winning the 1973 Belmont States by 31 lengths.

not sure if i'd choose this as the all-time event, but i would've loved to be sitting ring-side seeing this moment in person:

I always put the hatching of the Gobbledy Gooker as the pinnacle of sporting events you had to see in person.

That's a tough one. I'm tempted to say the Rumble in the Jungle, but damn. It would so hot there.

The 1975 European Cup Final match held in Paris, on 28 May 1975, that saw FC Bayern Munich odefeat Leeds United 2–0.

The match saw rioting by fans of Leeds after a disallowed Peter Lorimer goal and controversial decisions by referee Michel Kitabdjian. The violence saw Leeds banned from Europe for 4 years (reduced to 2 on appeal) Despite Leeds now playing in the third tier of English football, the controversy surrounding the final is still manifested in the chant 'We are the Champions, Champions of Europe' by fans of the club often throughout the half time interval at away games

The referee actualy admitted to taking a bribe from Bayern Munich. Looking at the video it's clear to see some shinanigans. Leeds fans can be animals at times.

Ali-Frazier I at Madison Square Garden, when Smokin' Joe sent Ali to the canvas in the 15th round with a picture perfect left hook.

Ali had just returned from his exile after becoming a conscientious objector to the Vietnam War and the fight was a lot more than a heavyweight boxing match. It divided the country, and I doubt we'll ever see a sporting event that transcended mere entertainment so enormously.

1982 Iron Bowl featuring a freshman running back by the name of Bo Jackson.

Vid below is when Bo capped a 66 yard drive when he went "Over the Top" on his fourth and goal, leaping touchdown, giving Auburn the lead with two minutes left in the game.

Auburn held on to win 23 - 22, and snapped a nine year Iron Bowl losing streak.

This was Paul Bear Bryant’s last Iron Bowl. He dies just months later.

WIDE RIGHT FOREVER!!

Although I'm not sure how the game could have possibly been more exciting than it was watching in my parents' living room, something tells me that being there would have to have been.

And I suppose Game 6 in '96 wouldn't have been a bad ticket either.

I'd love to be able to go back to the teens or 20's to see Ty Cobb play but I can't point to any specific game. So I'll have to change sports and go with this one. Hopefully with a seat at this end of the ice.

Mantle never hit 61, Maris did.

He ended up with 54 in '61.

Liverpool FC 3 - AC Milan 3, Liverpool win on penalties to win the European Cup (Champions League Final)

May 25th 2005, the greatest day of my life, coming back from 3-0 down at halftime and our inspirational fans never stopped singing even in desperation, and within the greatest 6 minutes in football history we score 3 times. Nothing will ever top this in my life.

Get goosebumps just posting these pics. I have friends that were there and I can listen to stories from them all day. And the parade when we won in the city center, over a million scousers, couldnt get any better than that.

Singing Youll Never Walk Alone at halftime whilst down 3-0:

this would have been my answer, if and only if, it wouldn't have been wide right.

i was also watching in my mom's living room, and tears did come out. hey, i was only in third grade.

i personally can't think of any one's i would want to be at because all my teams seem to shit the bed...

edit: i saw spadanko's pick and it would have been the 1980 u.s. gold medal game.

Frazier Ali I is the one I'd see too. Smokin' Joe doesn't get enough credit and conversely people give Ali too much.

You watch some of the interviews before this fight (and Ali Frazier II and III) and you just cringe at some of the things Ali said. Ali was a great showman, but not the greatest heavyweight of all-time IMHO.

The picture of Ali earlier in the thread is from his fight with Sonny Liston. I guess the only reason to see that fight is to get a good view of the phantom punch.

Ali-Frazier I at Madison Square Garden, when Smokin' Joe sent Ali to the canvas in the 15th round with a picture perfect left hook.
