I don't think someone who will have genius attached to their name has gotten as terrible and embarassing as Steve Martin. He's got the combo of doing awful, awful movies with becomming so incredibly dower and humorless in real life. He's the head of the 'comedy is serious business' school that Kevin Kline has been trying to take over for years.

I once saw an interview where Martin talked about being so disillusioned by making Sgt. Bilko that he almost quit film, because he knew he was doing total shit for money. Then he has the balls to go after Peter Sellers.

Martin is worse than chevy chase.

Well, he was a genius in the way he transformed the presentation of comedy.
Perhaps it wouldve been done eventually,
but he was the first to draw crowds large enough to fill arenas.
Rock Star Comedy, if you will.

Dice Clay and Dane Cook may have never existed, or done as well, without Martin.

He's still on my list of celebs I'd like to have coffee with,
but yeah, lately I've felt embarrassed for his choices.

Steve Martin should NEVER be forgiven! :furious:

Some things just don't hold up. It was funny at the time for most people. Unless people were watching him and buying his records to intentionally not laugh. You had to be there. Remember... old horror movies were once scary.

Bobo's right, as always. Steve Martin was/is a hero of mine, and is forgiven by me for being an occasional pseudo-intellectual douchebag.

You have to go back and look at his stand up, which I think still holds up, but in the context of the time was brilliant. Let's Get Small was a great bit, and this little singalong ditty that he wrote puts him in the hall of fame by itself. I quote from memory:

Be curious kind and forgiving
be gentle and peaceful each day
be warm human and grateful
and have a good thing to say

Be thoughtful and trustful and childlike
be witty and happy and wise
be honest and love all your neighbors
be obsequeous purple and claravoyant

Be pompous obese and eat cactus
be dull and boring and omniprescent
Criticize things you don't know about
get all excited and go to a yawning festival.

Theres more but I can't remember it all

I heard Eddie Murphy's name being tossed around with the word genius after SNL/Delerious/Beverly Hills Cop/Raw.

And I ask you, has any big name star made a bigger pile of shit than this man? I just saw a promo for Meet Dave, the name might be wrong. But this man has a string of failures that I think is unprecedented.

Eddie's got a ton of shitty movies over the last 15 years, but he's got a bunch of hilarious ones and his standup and time on SNL almost totally still stands up 20-25 years after the fact. Like Martin, he too has turned into a self-important douchebag.

I think Eddie Murphy movies still make money to an extent, and he was nominated for an oscar last year. He hasn't stopped being 'safe black guy' so I still have to put Steve Martin above him for the embarrassing perfect storm of commerical/critical failure, pretentious disdain for your audience, and bold contradiction of philosophy and practice.

I used to think he was great back in the day, but like Eddie Murphy, he just totally fell off the earth.

Besides the original wacky stuff (the arrow, the half beard/half moustache), "The Jerk" he also was involved with good movies like Parenthood.

You would think though that there came a time he had to stop doing crap just for the money.

Maybe he's busy dealing with own personal El Guapo, which also happens to be the real El Guapo.

I bet if you looked it up, Eddie Murphy would have some of the highest grossing movies over the last decade. He's probably been in more #1s than anyone else. So they're not failures. They may be abortions of movies, but they've been successful.

After looking it up, Eddie Murphy is actually the highest grossing actor of all time.

Jesus. I can't wait for Norbit 2.

I like the guy. Seriously...how long does any actor's career stay red hot? He's been in the business for 40 years. I like a lot of what he's done.

Three Amigos
Roxanne
Little Shop of Horrors
Hosting SNL a million times
Novocaine
Planes, Trains and Automobiles
I can even tolerate his "Family" movies (Parenthood, Father of the Bride)

It's unfair to count cartoon movies towards this. Over the last decade his only hits have been the cartoons and rubber suit movies (Norbit actually didn't even end up topping 100m). Dreamgirls wasn't his movie. Removing Shrek he's had a lot of failures over the last 10 years:

I Spy-33m
Pluto Nash-5m!!
Haunted Mansion-75m
Showtime-38m
Life-62m
Holy Man-12m

In any case, this conversation were comedians who are currently dogshit who were considered geniuses, not about which comedians were successful. Eddie Murphy has not made a quality comedy in 20 years (Coming to America), yet was at one time a genius.

Pryor was a genius, but his live shows were never as huge as Martin's 70s stand up shows. Martis credited for getting people who wouldn't normally go out to comedy shows.

Martin and Murphy in the same crappy movie. This is my thesis. This is my closing argument...

Funny might be the hardest quality to persuade someone about, even more so than sexy. At least if you don't find a chick totally hot you still have "oh yeah, don't get me wrong, I'd totally bang her", but if you don't think someone is funny then that's it.

I'm one of those who thinks Steve Martin is brilliant, but even I have to admit I'm not reading his books - side note: cruel shoes was a pretty above average book- or going to see his live theater. This thread has convinced me that he owes us something great.

Its been a while.

Go watch 'The Jerk' again..I defy you not to laugh out loud at least a half a dozen times..That's 6 times more then just about every other comedy on the video store shelves..

Although Haunted Mansion was horrible, it did 75m which is pretty successful. Same goes for Life with 62m. I'm not saying he hasn't put out failures, I just wouldn't have listed those two as examples

The Jerk..great!
La Story...Brilliant!
Three Amigos...loved.
Parenthood..Classic!
Planes, Trains..ditto!
The Comedian doing a standup for dogs on Carol Burnett...hilarious
I lost respect for the guy at Pink Panther...
The aspect of the guy I have total respect for... His taste in art ...he has a freaking awesome collection!

Haunted Mansion cost 90m and Life cost 75m to make. While it may have turned a profit eventually with worldwide and DVD/Video sales, if you don't make your budget back in the states, I think it's safe to call a movie a failure.

There are only a handful of entertainers in the last 100 years that could be labeled 'genius,' and a jackass playing a banjo with an arrow through his head ain't one of them.
