Buddy of mine is teacher in a high school on Long Island. One of his students turned him on to this band. I'm usually very anti-anything that comes from someone younger than me (28). But, have to admit, these are some pretty catchy tunes.

Anyone else know this band/album? I'm so out of it, they could be #1 on MTV and I wouldn't have a clue.

Are they like Vampire Moose?

I'm not into it- I really don't want to hear some kids singing about college and scarves and irony and shit. Sounds too much like the police for me. I'm definately inclined to hate this type of music though, even before I hear it, so my vote doesn't count at all.

understood, but by your references, it sounds like you've heard quite a bit of it.

I hate a band with a cute, disconnected name. I haven't heard them, but after that scathing sheepatorial, I refuse to listen.

I caught them on SNL a few weeks ago and wasnt impressed. I read an interview with the main guy and he said that they were heavily influenced by Paul Simons Graceland, which I love, but I still cant support them. Way too "cute-z"

Like, Wolf Mother - Hootie and the Blowfish - Bullet For My Valentine - Arctic Monkeys ?
Shit names and shit bands all.

Just gave their album a listen for the first time and i love them. These guys have a great sound and now I wanna see them live. I hope they catch on, more people need to hear these guys.

Agreed, I like Vampire Weekend a lot. There's just something about it that oddly reminds me like I'm listening to a Wes Anderson soundtrack or something.

I noticed the influence of Simon's Graceland almost immediately, the bass lines and the percussion and the guitar. They aren't bad, but aren't my cup of tea.

Easily one of the best albums of the year.

I can't believe you said that, after a few songs in the first thing i said to myself was, 'man, this shit belongs in a wes anderson movie.'

They are a great young band. I look forward to the inevitable backlash their next album brings.

Saw them live a couple weeks ago and they were great. They played a few new songs that I immediately liked which is rare.

I don't much care for them. Agreed on the wes anderson / the beach boys/ and the paul simon bits - which is why I'm not on board ... I've heard it.

BUT while we're wondering about new bands...

I heard Tapes N Tapes last night and really liked it. Anyone hear that whole record? I ony heard the myspace stuff.

Those guys hired a monster to rep them:

Vampire Weekend are OK, but the album really didn't do anything for me. I don't really "get" the hype. Kind of like a preppier, more indie rock watered down Talking Heads.

There was a thing in the LA Times a while back about how the time is right for Op Ivy to reunite, and one of the reasons was that Vampire Weekend is borrowing more heavily from them than anyone else and having a very successful time doing it.

I really liked the "A-Punk" single when it came out. Bought the album...and was totally underwhelmed.

I seriously want my $15 back.

ummm, what?

I think he meant they aren't new? I called them a new band...

Yesterday was the first time I read a non-pitchfork review of them. It said that they had released the worst album of the year, the mag also said Howlin' Rain had released the best album. This mag isn't so good at rating albums.

Went to school with them at Columbia. They sucked in house parties then and they suck on SNL now.

Wow if what is on youtube is their best songs then they are horrible, they sound like shitty bands trying to be quirky in the late 80s early 90s.
