View Full Version : Puppies Shouldn't Run?

We took our 5 month old chihuahua (super tiny) jogging yesterday.
And she loved it and we were tired before her. (And she was so adorable the whole time)
But I heard that it might cause them to have knee problems.
Is this true? Should we not take her jogging with us till she's older? Or should we just not take her a lot. (Maybe 3 times a week.)

I always thought that you should not take a little dog walking until they are 6mths old. They eat stuff on the ground that could be deadly for their little itty bitty insides. So I would be worried more about that than the jogging thing, you could always scoop the pup up, they weigh less than a bottle of water.

Strap her to a skateboard to be safe

i have always been told by vets for smaller dogs like that, or dogs that are not really athletic, to keep the excersize to a min. maybe a 10 minute walk twice per day. it is bad for their joints.

i had a yorkie (weighed 3 pounds full grown) just dont force him to do anything...they will play and run around...but they will stop when they are tired...simple as thatyou should prevent the dog from running around...thats what puppies do

Very important with the little ones also is to prevent them from jumping down from things like couches and chairs, their little hips are pretty delicate.

Puppies Shouldn't Run?
Not sure.
But I am sure you should let them breathe.

Of course they shouldn't run. Geez, who would vote for a puppy?

How about taking it to Fez's Cardiac exercise facility? OF course it would also be great if you put the fucking dog in the basket!
According to Ron and Ron, puppies should breathe.

She's surprisingly pretty good about not eating things outside. And we were very careful with her the whole time.

Damn I didn't know that. Thank you!
I mean we were pretty surprised when I looked it up and most places said that chihuahuas just don't like to jog or walk alot. But she completely loves it.
When we got home she still wanted to run and play.
And she was fine the next day and everything.
I'm thinking I take her walking on the same path instead of jogging. And I'll only take her once or twice a week at most.

I don't know about the joint thing, but I have heard that it's very possible to over exercise any sized dog. They can be willing to run with you long after they've "had too much", because they will basically do just about anything with you. Aren't dogs great?

Me and my Aunt's chihuahua, Sam. He would just run back and forth over my back for exercise!

I thought his post was a joke until your reply. The dog just disappears.

We just fostered a pit bull puppy with a broken rear leg. She would run her broken (and presumably painful) leg down to a stub if we didn't stop her. I think especially with younger pups, pain isn't much of a discouragement. What I said about the little dogs jumping down from things I've usually heard about dachsunds, but I think the years of genetic fiddling that results in weak hips would prrobably apply to other little dogs too.

I'm glad I saw this thread. I was going to start running with my puppy beagle, he is about 8 months. Should I not? Is he too small?
