The weakest link of the show is the Dawsons Creek guy's scenes with The Chick.
Were they really flirting with eachother over her boyfriend's dying body???

But all in all, I liked it. It's smart, and has better spcl effects than most tv shows.
It's one of those shows, however, that you have to pay attention to...
which I'm afraid, very afraid actually, will equate to its early demise.

I also liked the way they did the setting titles... it's different, quirky and even humorous,
although realizing that each time, it may have taken me out of the show.
Besides Dawson Creek, the worst actor was the guy who plays Matthew Abbadon on Lost.
His anger and misogyny was a bit over the top, as if he took acting lessons from Dexter's Sgt Doakes. Add to that, every time he was on, I thought of how much better Lost is than this.

But yeah, I'll be watching, as the underlying story holds alot of interest for me.

Not bad of a premiere. Totally X-File-sih, but without the alien conspiracy. I do like the whole "Pattern" mystery. I think this will be a good addition to Tuesday night viewing.

I didn't buy Jackson as a globe trotting con man, but I'll wait to see how his character pans out.

I also liked the way they did the setting titles... it's different, quirky and even humorous,

I liked that too. First seen in the movie Panic Room opening titles I believe. Lost uses it in the DVD menus as well.

9 million people watched the premier episode. That's weak shit, considering the pilot cost 10 mil to make, and lost got 18+ for it's premier. I doubt this show makes it to the second season. I think they have 13 episodes done or ordered, so those will likely air, but I wouldn't expect a second season. Then again, they gave Terminator a second season, and Prison Break somehow managed a 4. So what the fuck do I know?

Well, considering advertisers will be looking at the rating - which was a 3.21 P18-49, up +99% vs. the prior 4 week time period average. It did even better among P25-54, 3.90, up +115% vs. the prior 4 weeks. It did very well across both male and female demos. Those are good numbers, especially for a sci-fi show.

The number will go even higher once the DVR ratings come in next week.

FOX will consider it a ratings success.

only thing i didn't like was my wife knowing from the very beginning the boyfriend was going to be dead by the end of the episode: "it's classic jj abrams, she'll end up with the douchey son"

and isn't it less important how many watched the premiere than whether it's a good show or not and people will watch it in the long run? how can you extrapolate from the number of people watching one single episode that it won't last to a second year?

I believe House started in the 9's for ratings and look at it now. Going into its 5th season and increased ratings each year. Plus, House is going to be the lead in for this show, just like American Idol was for House so it should get more viewers.

Completely hideous. So awful:

The stupid car chase that ends with the bad guy running into a hidden ramp in a construction site and then the police allowing the woman to have a tender moment(s) with the bad guy before even securing the scene.

The revolutionary commuter jet autopilot system that can land a plane on it's own.

The horribly PC use of an arabic gentleman as the conspicuous non-terrorist on the plane.

The man was exploded by bombs that threw the woman up into the air and the only injuries he had was invisible skin.

The FBI allows the woman to take custody of a terrorist, gives him back his lab that he used to develop bio weapons, then allows him to stagger around in public with no restraints other than his son who has been freelancing in Bahgdad.

The aforementioned LSD/drug cocktail administered in leftover props from Altered States. Just stupid.

Wooden performances stretched over a cheap framework of badly stitched plot devices.

The prior 4-week time period? You mean the time when they were going against the Olympics without any original programming? It would have been a miracle if they hadn't had this boost. And I'm guessing that Fox would have expected a bigger boost for their flagship new show, which is what it was.

Yes, House also had a rough start, only to be rescued by American Idol lead-in, which luckily stayed for future weeks. But House has the benefit of being a good show with good actors ... well, one good actor, but it's enough. Fringe sucks, and the semi-serialized nature of the show, even if Fox is trying to market it otherwise, will hinder Fringe from gaining new viewers.

And however Fox will try to spin the numbers is irrelevant, the advertisers have already bought the ad time, and if they bought it anticipating better ratings, they will be highly disappointed. Now, if by some miracle Fringe pulls a Cheers and gains massive viewership in subsequent weeks, I'll eat my words, but I don't see it happening.

Now I like it even more!!

I liked it, seriously I have to agree with some of the comments above, but at the same time like the show because it has some promise. Was there bad and over the top acting, yep. Not too many pilots when you look back on them usually do. The characters and storylines need time to develop. I also agree if the show has too many hidden elements so early it can get lost on the audience quick which can hurt the shows future. I'm impressed with it enough to give it some more episodes as I think most people will.

The prior 4-week time period? You mean the time when they were going against the Olympics without any original programming?

Yea, the prior 4 week in which networks look at percentage gains for their shows. It's a standard measurement period. And the Olympics is a special case, whereas the only ratings that matter for advertisers is how it compared to the previous Olympics. When buyers look at NBC vs. FOX, they'll exclude all Olympic programming.

Plus Fringe did exceptionally well vs. FOX's prime time average for the quarter.

Despite your feelings for the show content, the ratings were good and if it continues next week.... Mmmmm Mmmm words.

Fucking A - that is the thing that made me want to see this show. Pacey Witter forever.

And I was pleasantly surprised to see Alvarez from Oz and Daniels from The Wire.

Watched the pilot and the premise is OK, but the acting and the writing are just about as bad as Lost is good.
So, you mean they are good? Ha, ha, just a little joke about Lost there. But really? I thought it was actually pretty hilarious and I really did enjoy it all so far for that reason--although I'm guessing that's not what they are going for. Pretty much everything Pacey's waterhead dad said was hilarious, whether it was meant to be or not. I thought the plot was absurd and laughable and pretty much unsustainable. There was basically no suspension of disbelief.

I totally agree with everyone who pointed out the stupid shit about it and pointed out all the ways it sucked, I still think everything the crazy scientist dad says is a laugh riot. It rules and is horrifyingly atrocious at the same time. In addition to being completely retarded:

"I used this to extract information from a corpse once. You can do that if they've been dead up to six hours."
Later: "How long has he been dead?" "Five hours." "Question him!"

Crazy doctor explaining why lady got pregnant and gave birth to a "magic old man baby": "Condoms are not 100% effective. You two should be aware of that."

"The very last time you were...intimate...were you safe? YOU WEREN'T, WERE YOU?"

"Her heart just stopped, what do I do?" "Do you have any cocaine?" "No." "That's too bad." After which, Pacey uses metal and welding equipment weighted down with phone books to resuscitate the victim. Yeah.

I mean, god, this show is freaking terrible. And I am going to continue to watch it until it gets canceled! It's on right after House, a show that gets watched religiously in our household. I'll probably keep watching it on at least a half-assed basis. I enjoy Pacey being Pacey and the crazy dad being crazy. Even though the whole premise is utterly ridiculous. I can't stop laughing!

On a vaguely related note, I looked for a House thread tonight but couldn't find one specifically dedicated. I wanted to post and say, "No fetus to dispense!" Then I watch the new Fringe episode and it's completely the opposite.

Interestingly, my husband told me tonight that he read some review where they said it starts extremely weak but that the first few episodes aren't representative of the rest. We can't figure out how this is supposed to happen, but hey, we're laughing all the way.

are they fucking serious with this show...
I'm a little confused as to the premise, it seems like a little too much supernatural stuff for my taste. Almost like the writers don't know where to go with it or something. A show like 11th hour is more on my wavelength because it's firmly based in reality. Not to mentioned it's produced by Jerry Bruckheimer...

ChrisTheCop

There was basically no suspension of disbelief.

Isnt it up to the viewer to suspend their own disbelief?

Talking with people about this show, they either love it or hate it. Most of the people who hate it also "never could follow" The Xfiles, which of course was a great, and hugely popular show. This show is like the Xfiles in that it deals with the supernatural, but also like Lost in that it has an "arc" storyline that is slowly being revealed and will hopefully be defined by the end of the season. But then, some people dont like Lost because it takes too long to tell that story.

I for one, am enjoying Fringe. It's not as good (so far) as the 2 shows above, but it's pretty damn inventive, and entertaining, and I'm giving it a chance to shine. For me, Pacey is the worst part of the show. It's like when Ricky Schroeder came on NYPD Blue; you just keep saying, "look it's dawson's friend!" And yes, the father is supposed to be quirky, therefore funny. The show isnt taking itself too seriously, as the Xfiles and Lost dont.

If youre watching a science FICTION show, and you can easily believe everything that youre being shown... then you should be disappointed.

I did not see this mentioned. Michael Giacchino does the music for both shows. He also did The Incredibles and Ratatouille which did not sound like Lost at all. Love Walter but hate his son. A lot of people figured out that Jack and Claire were related... does that mean theyve figured the whole show out? I'm guessing the result is similar here. I'm pretty good at figuring out the smaller storylines on Dexter, but that doesnt mean I cant thoroughly enjoy the show. You should be proud that you figured it out, and that pride should help you enjoy the experience!

and to the guy who said this show is BETTER than xfiles, I disagree. I like this show alot, but I constantly compare it to the xfiles; Finally, there is a decent replacement to fill the hole left by that great show.

Anyone else notice the bald dude from the previous ep getting off the elevator before the electro-magnet guy got on?

Looks like he was there to observe the elevator crash. I guess he is kind of like Marvel comic's Watcher (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watcher_(comics))? Also, guess he will keep showing up like that.

an easter egg of sorts:

The bad guy's female asian lab tech character name was Elizabeth Sarnoff,
which is also the name of a writer, producer, director on Lost.

I thought tonight's was the best storyline yet.

I guess you can say that. The first episode showed him being taken out of a mental home to help out with these cases. He was once a scientist dealing with this "fringe" science, so they needed him out of the home.

As stupid as I first thought this show was, I've grown to really like it. I think because Abrams was attached I was expecting more substance in the vein of Lost, but over the course of these weeks I'm content with the fact that this is just a fun show, with Monster of the Week type shit that is entertaining and enjoyable with no real substance, which we all need in our entertainment lives as far as I'm concerned. I approve.

did walter ever commit a crime? i dont remember exactly what the explanation was for him getting put in an institution.

yeah, that girls hair and constantly scrunched up faces really suck. im pretty sure i have seen her with another hairstyle somewhere and she was pretty hot.

its a little dopey at times but i still enjoy it.

didnt the end of this last episode feel a little abrupt? they needed to give some sort of explanation for a few things to make it feel like a complete episode imo.

i didnt think it was very clear exactly what the machine did either, im about to rewatch that part, i thought it just made the apple a little bigger lol.

It seemed to me that the mathematical equation when put to music created some kind of electromagnetic pulse or frequency that enabled the man to grab the apple through the door of the safe. An application that most likely will lead to people being able to walk through walls.

but early in the first half of the giants eagles game they came back from a commercial and it was from a camera near the end zone

as they panned forward to the action there was a bald white guy who looked very much like the watcher guy in this show, paused briefly on him and continued to the game

Recognize this dude on the sidelines at the Eagles/Giants game? You do if you watch Fringe, because he's the weird bald dude shows up to watch most of Fringe's wackiest events. It was actually kind of cool, since Fox's camera suddenly brought up this shot, cut away, and no one on air mentioned it in any way.

As a bonus. The chick, the main character, really does remind me of my chick. I'm anxious to get on back on board with this series.

What the fuck happened to the episode last night? Stupid american Idol cost 20 minutes of Fringe and they skipped that amount of content. WTF?

What? American idol ended at like 9:01

yeah, i don't know what to tell ya, CountryBob. AI ended at 9:01 and then swiftly followed by Fringe. maybe your tivo is fucked up.

Nice end, although they promo'd Nimoy's guest appearance a lot.

oh and I called the "Peter Twist" about half way through the episode, but still good.

as far as the Tivo's, yeah, damn american idol.
tonight i had recorded 5 min of the news at 10 just in case.

1. The elevator scene made me think of Being John Malcovich
2. The Nemoy cameo suffered because he is cameoed in the Star Trek movie (both JJ Abrams), but besides that I liked it, and the final establishing shot I liked, cause it makes me wonder where they're going with this.

I really was hoping for a little more conversation between Oliva and Spock. We've waited all season and he didn't say much. And something tells me they are not going to start the next season right where they left off...

In Bell's office in the WTC (Does that mean Massive Dynamic has it's HQ there in the other universe?) the NY Post said the Obama's were moving into a "new" White House, I wonder what happened to the old one in this alternative universe.

I was thinking that Walter either took Peter or perhaps his wife from the alternative universe, I couldn't remember anything about Peter's mom but I think she is dead. When Walter put the coin on the grave (the coin Peter didn't remember because it was the dead Peter who would remember) then It was obvious (even if just for a couple seconds before they revealed the name on the grave)

Which brings up: What about the alternate Walter Bishop and William Bell? Won't the other Walter come looking for his son? Sure this Walter has a way to plug the holes, but I am sure that the other Walter can figure our another way in. Where is the other William Bell if the one from our universe is in the other one. Are they both in that universe? And if there is a second universe wouldn't there be more as well?

Anyone from New York recognize the name of the place Nina Sharp asked Oliva to meet her? Is that near the WTC site? Does the elevator also transport you to another location in NYC as well as another reality? Or maybe a more simple explanation would be that the WTC was built in a different location in the alternate NYC.

I'm still rocking a 4:3 SDTV and Fox really fucked up the framing on the WTC shot at the end of the show (The North Tower was cut off, you could not see the antennae)

I'm really tired of shows that are filmed in 16:9 not being letterboxed for 4:3 TVs. I watch most of my TV on my computer, but do like to check out some shows live. It seems that lately I'm seeing a lot of shots of just half of people's faces when they talk or a large emtpy spot with someone standing just outside of frame. Pan and Scan sucks!

I will eventually go to HDTV.

just watched the finale, and was quite happy. there was definitely something odd about Peter and Walter, and now we know why. Dunno if theyll go into any of this, or just probably say "things are different there."

But my guess would be that since the White House was a target on September 11 2001,
that plan succeeded in the alternate timeline, and perhaps the ones that hit the WTC
were stopped by passengers on those planes, or by other means.
Agent Dunham did have visions of a very 9/11/01-ish skyline, but not the WTC, in the previous episode.

I too kinda wish they hadnt promoted, nor put his name in the opening credits, Nimoy's appearance, as it wouldve been a cool surprise. And did they really expect we wouldnt recognize his voice in the shadows?

I caught up this past week on hulu, and cant remember one good reason why I stopped watching as it's broadcast. Great show, and its gonna be back on my tivo.

They really should have just said it was a lost episode or something. To run it and make no mention that it was out of sequence is stupid.

I loved the episode where Walter gets his memories back and is all serious and normal sounding.

I'm not realy a fan of the stand alone episodes. They come off like an Xfiles imitation to me when they do those (which I'm sure will make someone say Xfiles is an imitation of something else and so on...) Just focus on the main crazy two world shit. I dont want to know about freaky faced little kids or girl thats possessed.

not sure if anyone else noticed but at the end when peter asks walter about how could the nazi know the formula if he didnt get it from the books and they pan to the picture

it has the nazi and a guy that looks like walter

i think walter is the grandfather he's talking about to peter and he and the nazi somehow have slowed their aging process or time traveled

cause earlier when the nazi was in the crowd and saw walter he said he was trying to place him and that he looked like his father

then as he was dying he was looking up to where walter was , said the old name of bischoff and called him a traitor

Chimee
02-01-2010, 05:00 PM
I'd say Bischoff was the name Walter's father used, the Nazi slowed his aging, but I doubt Walter did.

I think they'll limit Walter's big secret to the thing with Peter.

I'm sure someone else has mentioned this in this thread, but is anyone else annoyed that they keep acting like they didn't move production out of Long Island this season? Vancouver looks nothing like New York/Boston/DC, and yet they still act like that is where they are. They should have at least worked into the show that they were relocating to the West Coast for some reason or another. It is just ridiculous seeing the coastal redwoods and constantly misty outdoor scenes and we are expected to just ignore it...

if that makes you not enjoy the show thats not to great. Just think because they moved it to a cheaper location the show stayed on the air so i would say its not to bad all things considered
