View Full Version : How are YOU saving gas?

I bought this scooter last year and I am real glad I did now that gas prices are going bananas.
This thing gets almost 100 mpg and can go like 40 - 45mph which is enough for me. I still have my cars and stuff, but I drive it to work when its nice and it saves me a ton of money.
It may look a little funny, and I wish it was faster, but for what it is and the fact I do not need a motorcycle license to use it, I am laughing all the way to the bank.
How are you saving gas???

that's a cool looking scooter... i pay attention to driving slower and not hitting the gas too hard after coming to a stop. i cancelled a trip to see my eldest daughter play in a softball tournament both Sat and Sun- which bugs the shit out of me...
if the prices went up and the oil companies and oil shieks just made even money(which is still great profits) it wouldn't bother me so much BUT them motherfuckers are getting fat and wall street has a big hand in it too

unfortunatley, there's not too much i can do. a few months ago, my office got re-located from NYC to NJ in a location where public transport is not an option.
still, i only spend about $30-$35 a week in gas, cuz i drive a small car and i'm not a lead-foot. a gentle foot on the gas pedal saves a lot of fuel!
i also, switched all of my lightbulbs to compact fluorescents (got them for free--don't ask), so any savings in electricity at home help offset the cost of gas in my car.

I telecommute once a week, so I drive one day less than I did before, which doesn't sound like a big difference, but it means I only have to fill up once per week as opposed to twice, thereby halving my fuel spending.
I'm pushing for going fully home-based if gas prices hit $4/gallon. (Driving 70 miles round-trip every day is no way to save fuel.)
In addition, I've been paying closer attention to vehicle maintenance, including my tire pressure, and my driving habits. I try to keep a consistent speed on the highway (the other day I found it amusing to keep the speedometer needle on 69), brake easier and don't blare out of a full stop ... which is how I can push my car to almost 30 mpg.

i agree that you are saving gas, but what are you saying in impossible. driving 20% less can not mean saving 50% on fuel costs. if anything it works out to one less tank per month. still a big savings, esp. when filling up is 50 bucks

I think that you are assuming that I am filling up when I'm fully empty, which is not the case.
Let me spell it out for you:
I needed to refuel my car twice per week when I was driving 5 days per week.
70 miles per day times 5 days = 350 miles per week.
70 miles per day times 4 days = 280 miles per week.
15 gallon tank times 29 miles per gallon = roughly 435 miles (at 35mph...HA! Not on the Turnpike if you want to live) for a full tank.
BUT, since I drive the Turnpike (and my car hates Sunoco gasoline and the gas stations on this part of the 'Pike that I drive are Sunoco) and work in Newark (NJ), I refill at 1/4 tank left to stay safe. (Read: so I wouldn't have to stop for any reason at all in Newark.)
I was doing that twice per week.
Even if I drive until my tank is completely empty, I am still only refueling once per week, unless I do a lot of side-trips or weekend driving, like I did this weekend.
On the weekends, I don't drive if I don't have to. (I also seem to have permanently affixed my butt to the couch, but that's another issue for another forum.)

During the week I work in Orlando and rent a place in town. I work South of town, 10 miles away. So, I have started to ride a bike to and from work.
Its dangerous as hell and takes a while, but my legs are getting super strong and I save a lot of money. So much so that my weekly drive to and from Tampa on the weekend doesn't seem as bad.
The Smart Car is only 'smart' if everyone drives one. I have a better chance on my bike in a collision.

I drive a company vehicle and use their fual card.
In my personal life I did nothing. As a matter of fact, I started using premium in my vehicles about 2 weeks ago. It costs more but it increases fuel mileage.......

not really (http://ask.cars.com/2007/07/premium-gasolin.html). not enough to justify the added cost, anyway.

Absolutely, there's no way to justify it.
It's completely a decision based on having a better running vehicle, better performance and increased life.
There's not much I can do without going to vehicles that won't fit my family... It's just the cost of 'doing business'.

This is true, but very dependent upon the quality of gas. For example, I can tell a significant difference between the premium and regular at a shell station, not so much an an Exxon. To say one way or the other specifically is not true, and I feel for the poor bastard who runs 87 in their BMW. That being said, if you're running 93 in your Kia Spectra you're wasting your money. If the car runs fine on regular or you don't see a significant mpg improvement within 3 tanks of premium it isnt worth it. For example Sarah's car (92 Accord) runs so much better on premium it's allowed us to keep the car for a longer period of time, definitely worth it.

This is true...
In my '08 FJ Cruiser (work vehicle) I have to fill up every 300 kilometers (do your own conversion) when I run regular.
The manual says to only run Premium, so I switched to premium. I now get approximately 500 kilometers to a tank.
It's a huge savings for the company... unfortunately it's a Shell gas card and I'm not getting as many airmiles.
In my personal vehicles I only see about 50 - 75 km difference to a tank, but the performance is better.

I drive a 04 Passat 1.8T and by slowing down on my commute from 78 MPH or so to cruise control on 65, my onboard MPG compy show I got a 17.86% improvement in avg MPG - 28 MPG to 33 MPG. Mo' slower is mo' better. Soooo.....
Maybe if I drove to work in reverse I could actually fill my tank up? Hopefully Mike the Teacher will confirm...

Ditto on the company car...I drive the shit out of mine and it's still worth what I have to pay a month to be able to drive it all the time that fee is nothing compared to the amount of gas that I use a month. My company switched over to the Impala a few years ago and it will take the E85 but there are not freaking stations that offer it and I live in the damn corn belt of the country. For a V6 Sedan the Impala gets like 28-30 mpg which I don't think is that bad. I may put gas in my personal car about every month...I have to use premium but I have a Mini and it will go forever on a tank of gas.

The bike looked like it slid fine. You could probably get right back on it and drive away.

It's big but gets over 40 MPG, compared to my truck at 17. And when I do have to truck it, I try to drive conservatively.
Gave my wife the minivan and bought an 01 Saturn SL1. So far we've saved about 300+ dollars in 5 weeks (My commute is about 90 round trip and the van got 19 mpg the Saturn gets 38)

Yeah, my birth certificate (with my mom's hand-written record of my vaccinations) says 1978. It's just that ... I pay for my own gasoline with my own money (debit card) and not a real credit card, so I do as much as I can to save as much as I can.
Plus, I read AAA magazine.

I thought that AAA recently rated the CX-9. I tried to find the review on its website, but I couldn't, but that doesn't mean anything.

I ride my bike to and from work everyday (unless it is poring rain). I have about 9 miles each way, so it doesn't take that long. I timed it last week and it only takes me about 10 minutes more to bike vs. driving.
I only use my car on weekends now to run to the store or visit family. Last week I used about 8 dollars in gas total.
Only down side is I don't get to listen to O and A during my commute. The plus is I load old Ron and Fez shows on my Ipod and listen to them on my ride.
