It should be good. I'm excited for Pitt, Clooney, and JK Simmons. I'm worried that it's a little close to lebowski, and I'm hoping it has an edge more like Fargo.

I was told good things by someone who worked on the movie. Parts of it were filmed on Rt. 17 in NJ where the old Tower Records used to be.

Wow...I was looking forward to this for a while due to the cast and, of course, Coens, but this trailer looks fantastic.
Random side note...when I did my grunt work for the CIA a few years back, one of main tasks was collecting the burn bags on our floor and taking them down to be destroyed. Borrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrring.
Oh, awesome use of a great band in the trailer...the music throughout the first part is by the band Elbow and the leadoff single, "Grounds For Divorce," off of their new album The Seldom Seen Kid. One of my absolute favorite bands.

I guess I'm in the extreme minority on the Coens in that I've never really been that fascinated with any of their overtly comic works. My favorite of all these would probably be O Brother. In my estimation Kingpin is superior to Big Lebowski by a multitude of >s in terms of pure comedic impact, a belief I never cease to catch flak for. The last few star-laden comedies they made were borderline lousy for me so, while I'll definitely be seeing BAR, I will do so with restrained expectations.

It looks like Brad Pitt's role is going to be absolutely hilarious.
He may be at his best doing comedy, especially when he is playing off-the-wall or offbeat characters.

I think the plus of TBL is that it works so well as a classic noir mystery as well as being a comedy. I'm not sure what the point is in comparing Kingpin (which rules) to TBL outside of both films featuring bowling.
I have a feeling this film will be more of a "comedy" along the lines of Fargo. Probably not as dark a comedy as that one, but if you look towards the end of the trailer for this new one, it looks like it gets pretty gruesome and violent. This is probably going to be a pretty bleak comedy.

06-22-2008, 10:17 PM
Look good.
I have a feeling they are downplaying the violence because of the mood No Country for Old Men created and that people wouldn't want to see the same kind of movie twice.
It doesn't look that intense but who knows.

"Osbourne Cox? I thought you might be worried about the security of your shit."Looks fantastic as usual with the Coens. Also may have the most impressive cast they've ever worked with, with no disrespect to the brilliant Goodman, Turturro and Buchemi.
On a related note Brad Pitt's fall/winter is shaping up to be pretty huge with this and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which also looks fucking great.

everyone said the Coen's jumped the shark with "Fargo" (before Big Lebowski was loved like today)....then they jumped with "O brother", now they jumped with "No Country for Old Men". I say, let them make movies for the rest of the careers..a few bad ones here and there are acceptable and then I'll judge their career in hindsight

I strongly disagree. And it only took one movie for Shyamalan to found Fort Shyamalan. I'll give Ethan and Joel the benefit of the doubt.

Even when they slack, they still kick ass. And I think Clooney is one of the actors they've used who's taken best to their writing and filmmaking style.

That's probably the only Coen Brothers film that I will never watch, much like Sydney Pollack's "Sabrina." The originals were so great, I don't need to see them remade, no matter who directs or stars in them.

As much as it pains me to say it, I didn't really care for O Brother. Something about it just really rubbed me the wrong way. I saw it with a huge group of people, and I was the only one who didn't love it. I haven't seen it since I saw it in the theater though, so it probably deserves a second chance.

I felt like the acting was the only thing that didn't disappoint me with this. The comedy is good but sparse, and the plot didn't carry the rest of the movie. I felt like the tone was too muddy, and it lacked a real purpose and really felt aimless to me.

Saw it last night, thought it was hysterical, and brilliant. The beginning IS a little slow, only because it develops the characters and establishes a plot, which leads into the hilarity and stupidity of the rest of the film. It was very well acted overall, all the actors were hilarious and had great chemistry. Brad Pitt had one of his funniest roles ever, IMO, Clooney was very funny, Malkovich was perfectly casted and hilarious, Frances McDormand was her usual amazing self and JK Simmons stole every scene he was in. The Coens really did kind of parodying humanity in general with this one, just the overall stupidity of people in current society, which I loved. Not the best film the Brothers have ever made, but very well doen, and, another win for the Coens in my book. Great dark comedy!

I agree with previous posts, the beginning is deathly slow (to the point of I was just going to take it back to Blockbuster without finishing watching it), the acting is good (forget Brad Pitt, Malkovich is great in every scene he's in), it all comes together nicely in the end and it probably is better the on the second viewing.

I loved this movie. My chick and I saw it in theaters and we both really liked it. I thought it was a great reset after the truly brilliant No Country. Every artist needs a piece like this after creating something like that, and I'm not putting it down in any way, it was great as a fun farce, and I'm in the camp that Brad Pitt was really fucking funny as a dunce. And the violence, which was sparse, was shocking, and I thought worked really well.

Loved it too.
I thought Clooney's character was great. I mean, he basically just played Clooney, but the character had those strange quirks. He did lot's of attention getting shit, like always pretending to be allergic to food and eating it anyways, and always talking about carrying a gun. He was a really engrossing character to watch.
But JK Simmons stole the movie with the few minutes he was on screen.

I'll give you an example of this. In the movie Intolerable Cruelty, Clooney's character goes to the "really old big boss'" waiting room and is reading a magazine. He looks flustered, looks at it like a centerfold and brushes it off. It took until the second or third viewing until I looked at the title of the magazine..."Living Without Intestines".
I laughed my ass off when I saw the name.
I just rented this.
I love Raising Arizona, Fargo, and most other Coen brother movies.
I liked this, but thought it was way short; maybe I need to watch it more than once.
Yes, I love the acting, but I just thought it was a bit shallow.

Paris Barclay on 'Burn After Reading'
"West Side Story," "Nashville," "Midnight Cowboy," "Five Easy Pieces" -- they don't have much in common, except as I viewed them in my youth, I was transported into a world that defined its rules, and maintained that tone, style, drama and humor throughout. "Burn After Reading" is also one of those films. Written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, this is a film that, like my other favorites, knows exactly what it wants to be. If you could examine the celluloid DNA of any frame, it would give you the genetic code to the rest of the film. Every George Clooney grimace, every Brad Pitt dance, every John Malkovich curse, every eccentric Frances McDormand choice is the twisted sister of every other performance, camera angle and spoken word in the film. It isn't so much shot as woven, with the hilarious nestled with the startling in a way that apparently only the Coen brothers can do. Fiercely driven by their needs, the characters do the illogical in constantly fresh, surprising ways. Ineptitude is celebrated, adultery is punished, and death comes a split second after the broadest smile. And you know what? It works.
Its artifice is so deceptive, many people probably believe it was an easier film to make than their celebrated "No Country for Old Men." I'll bet good money it wasn't.
As you may have gathered, I don't believe there's an objective criteria for great films. But when a movie shuttles me into the ozone for 90 minutes, and when it's over I'm gasping for air, it makes my list of the greats.
Paris Barclay is executive producer of "In Treatment."

a little late to the party here, but I just watched this.
I liked it, but it's definitely not the Coen's best work.
I usually shy away from the pretty boy actors, but surprisingly, Pitt was solid;
just his face as he sees the shadowy figure at the door was perhaps the funniest moment for me.
Again, I enjoyed it, but if I had to recommend a movie to a friend, there's a dozen I'd mention before this.

.
If you shy away from Brad Pitt, you'll end up missing several really good films. He does a lot of great work.

Nah, I meant even though I watch their films, I usually shy away from praising their work above the other actors. I usually use Damon in Private Ryan as an example; so many great actors in that film, and with every shot, Damon's prettiness took me out of the film.
Yours is a good point. Ive never seen Fight Club (gasp!) But Ive seen plenty of his other stuff. He chooses well.

jk simmons is always hilarious, and the other guy was sledge hammer.
The only parts I liked of this movie.
I really liked the movie. Thought the acting was great, the story was different, really clever and funny. Good stuff.
I didn't think it was possible, but I thought this film was terrible. I didn't think it was clever at all - what it seemed like was an American version of a Guy Ritchie tangled web movie.
