As some of you may know I have a subscription to Sports Illustrated which my mailman really seems to enjoy a lot. Though I'm generally a sports fan, I'm really only a rabid football fan. What I've done in the past is allow my subscription to run out in the spring, since I can get my sports news online and I really don't have that much free time in the summer months anyway. Then I'll re-up when football season is right around the corner and get myself a new football phone, or whatever piece of shit thing they happen to be giving away.
This spring I went through about two months of issues that had covers on them reminding me that my subsciption was about to run out and that I should send them a check to avoid missing any issues. Then I went through about a month of issues where each one said it was the last issue that I would recieve. Now I'm back to getting regular issues and no one's asked me for any money again.
So, I've been trying to figure out what happened. Near as I can figure: I read somewhere that magazine subscriptions are down due to internet use. Also, don't magazines base their ad rates on the number of subscriptions they have? Being a male 18-49 I figure they'd rather give me a free subscription than lose me as a "subscriber".
Now, I can't guarantee this will work for you. But if you have a subscription to something what do you have to lose? Let the thing run out and see what happens. If worse comes to worse you'll get a free tote bag when you re-subscribe.
