A friend of mine is possibly going to be moving from Florida to Jersey in the next few weeks. He is pricing out moving companies but also renting a truck to see if he can make it cheaper to rent a truck and just pay me to fly down and drive it up.
Basically, a long shot, but if anyone knows any place that would have a cheap price on a moving truck rental from around Lauderdale up to Bergen County. Any info or cheap truck would be huge. PM or here or anything. The hope is to get the truck from there and fly down and only drive back, but if it makes it somehow easier and cheaper i would drive it down from here and drive it back.

he can also rent the truck on a "one-way basis". most companies should do that.
then you can jet-blue your way down there, and help him drive it up here.
just remember, you pay by the day, and there is a per/mile charge (prob about .80/mile).
imo, fly yo ass down there, help him load it, and then drive it up with him. take 4 hour shifts. from lauderdale to bergen county, you are looking at about 24-26 hours drive time. very do-able.
fuck u-haul.
check out penske.

with the price of gas right now, could it really be worth it?
even if you find a good deal, i'm betting the difference between the cost of a moving truck (plus gas) and the cost of a moving company won't be enough to offset the convenience the moving company provides.

penske is probably your best bet if your going "one-way", if you break down they have service centers the whole route, U-Haul will fuck you over the second you leave the lot and their trucks are hammered and poorly maintained
we used penske when my brother moved from jacksonville fla to rhode island
we were going to originally use "budget" but they didnt have the size truck we needed
if you have AAA, Penske gives a discount

if he does get a moving company, dont have them pack the good shit, cause they will throw it around like the American Tourister Gorilla throwing around luggage
We had some stuff actually tractor trailer shipped, you have to pack it in a crate (they give you one, or you can build your own), then drop it off at a terminal and pick it up at a terminal but it can be pretty cheap, we moved his riding tractors and motorcycles and a complete workout set up with weights the whole bit... www.forwardair.com

its the opposite. If its even 1 dollar cheaper to pay for me to come down its better that way. Cause then we get to chill in FLA for a few days

oh yea and the person who might be moving wont have his license by then, prob not til july. So i'll be doin all the driving. no thing though. I can prob drive about 14 out of the first 16 hours total. The way I move, thats a pretty good chunk of the way. I could prob do it all in one shot without sleeping.

When I moved here to Florida from Connecticut, we used a moving company that promised to show up, pack everything, take furniture apart, store it, then put it all back together for about $3000. They show up, take shit apart, no rhyme or reason to where they put the screws to the furniture, charge me all this extra money because some of my furniture had glass, so it needed extra packing, and said some of the items were larger than I had stated in the quote. I said whatever, and bought them lunch, and tipped them 20 bucks a piece. They were obviously middle eastern, and this was just after 9/11, one said to me "We are Israeli, we're nice people, not those terrorists you see on TV".
When they dropped my shit off, it was 2 different guys and some frail 50 yr old woman. Sexist asshole that I am, I ask the woman "Are you the one that puts the furniture back together?" She says "No". I then see her trying to carry my microwave to my apartment, drops it and puts a dent in it. Then tries to tell me the dent was already there. I had a round coffee table that they obviously rolled on the ground, fucked that up, 2 other pieces were chipped and cracked. Then they tell me that my apartment was "25 cubic yards away from the parking lot" (dont ask me why the fuck they measure that in "cubic yards" ) and they charge me another $200. When it came time to put my furniture back together, it of course wasn't the same people that packed it, so they didn't know how to put it back together, and after 3 hours of trying, I finally said fuck it, and told them to leave. I'll never hire movers again.

Have him check out Pods. I don't know a whole lot about it but I have a friend who just moved from LA to Wisconsin using Pods. Basically, they drop the pod (shipping container) off in your driveway, you load it up, they come get it and deliver it to your new location. They priced it out and found that it was much cheaper than renting a truck and moving themselves.
She told me they charged by the foot, and that there was a minimum amount of footage you'd automatically be charged for, and then they'd charge for each additional foot. She had a good experience with it.

you guys are missing the point. Its not about saving money. Its just about finding a truck cheap enough to even make us driving come out even. Cause it would be more fun to hang for a few days and then drive a truck back. AGAIN WE ARENT LOOKIN FOR THE EASIEST WAY TO MOVE. JUST A CHEAP TRUCK TO DO IT
