View Full Version : Remember Your First Concert?

A fun experience? A hassle? Did the group deliver? Did your eardrums melt?
Mine was at American University in DC. John Sebastion had just left the Lovin' Spoonful, and was a solo act. i lived next door and was a mere kid.
It was an outdoor concert and freezing. around 1968, 1969, or 1970. can't remember. Sebastion was on a small stage at the bottom of this atrium amphitheater. wearing a blanket over his shoulders, and doing more harmonica playing than singing. it was interesting, and we all knew his spoonful songs. a very woodstockish experience. a lot of blankets, dancing in the aisles, and cannibis aplenty. i was shocked as well as intrigued.
after that, at AU, they had the groups Spirit, Mountain, Bruce in the gym, Grateful Dead, and Johnny Winter, (or was it Edgar Winter?), to name a few. All incredible, and free.
Do you remember your first concert?

My first 'official' concert was Beastie Boys live at the Max Bell Center in Calgary in 1996.
It was swell.... but the arena smelled skunky.... weird.
Yeah, swell.

Nofx w/ Lunachicks, Snuff, and Groovie Ghoulies at the troc in philly on the Heavy Petting Zoo tour.
It was before they redid the troc so everyone was smoking and it was super hot, but everyone I was sandwiched between was still wearing their leather jackets. While Nofx played 'kill all the white man' this black guy working security asked me 'what are they saying?' and I told him, to which he replied 'sheeeeeeet.'

My first was Pat Bennatar opening for Steve Miller at the former E Center(now the former Tweeter Center) in Camden. I had snacked on some shrooms just before we rolled in. I don't remember much but I know it was FANtastic.

During the "I Can't Dance" tour. How annoying was everyone doing that stupid walk up and down the aisles. Phil Collins killed it on the drums at one point though.

Beastie Boys on the North Shore of Oahu, summer of 1995 I think. I was 15 and had to take the bus all the way across the island. It was like 1.5 hours.
The concert was cool, but I had the flu or something.
So...that's what weed smells like.

I was in junior high school (it was 1974 or 75) and my brother and I went to see Gene Simmons and friends. Even bought a bootleg black t-shirt!

I saw my brother's band (the Shooze--and later Kix) play a bunch of times when I was a kid but I don't think those count as "real" concerts--one I paid for and went with friends. So my first "real" concert was The Cramps, the Slickee Boys and a showing of "The Punk Rock Movie" around May, 1980. The Cramps didn't play, though, something about Bryan Gregory not showing up, and the band Teen Idles played instead (with Ian MacKaye before he formed Minor Threat). It was a disappointment not to see the Cramps, but it was still fun for a bunch of 14 year olds to be around "real" punk rockers. Besides, the Cramps rescheduled and played in August and THAT show was great!

Hey, I remember that tour-caught it in Toronto. "Butthole Surfers, Trent Reznor chucking his synthesizer across the stage, then tackling the roady trying to put it back up, Body Count in the House!!"
Good times.

Alright, look, don't laugh.
When I was in 7th grade, my friend Mike's mother took us to see the BeeGees at the old Chicago Stadium. She fucking loved them, and Mike's dad sure as hell wasn't going, so she took us.
We went to Ichiban for Japanese chop chop before the show.

Rick Derringer w/Horselips as the opening act at Middlesex County College. I'm guessing it was around 1978-9. That was back when he played mainly BC Rich guitars (the real ones). All in all a great show.

Back in college I worked for the radio station. In 1998 we got to go to the CMJ music fest. Eminem had just put out his first single "I Just Don't Give a Fuck" and was supposed to play at one of the clubs. Me and my friend liked the song so we were going to see him. When we got to the club he was standing outside with a bunch of guys and he saw our passes around our necks and came over to us. The club canceled his appearance when they saw he was a white guy. We talked to him for about 10 minutes about how fucked up it was. He seemed like a nice guy. Inside the club they were passing out fliers saying that Eminem was sick and had to cancel. Just another example of people trying to keep the white man down.

6/10/94 Pink Floyd--Yankee Stadium. Got dropped off and picked up by my Dad, which was mortifying at the time but very cool of him in hindsight. Funniest memory is of some older guys near us shining their flashlights and complaining at anyone who stood up to dance in front of them.
