there has been a ton of talk on here about the price of gas and big oil's profits. i'm curious how cash folk are sinking in their gas tanks.

Depends on how often I drive into work (QUeens/LI border to Manhattan). Last week I drove every day because I had school/wedding/family stuff to do every day after work. Next week I will more than likely only drive once.

Considering $45 has been getting me barely more than half a tank, I will more than likely keep the driving in to a minimum once the wedding happens (6/6).

I can usually do a half a tank a week if I keep the driving to work down to a day or two max. Otherwise we are looking at like $80-90.

approx 60-70 a week... helps i work a 4 day workweek but I'm averaging 25k miles a year with kids and other activities

would love for the Truckers to go on strike or just stop all their vehicles on the highways for a day or two... i would join them

last fill up was about $45. I used to dread the day i would pay over $40 for a full tank, but that day came and went so fast that now im worried about the day i pay over $50

Depending on how busy we are, between 5 to 600 bucks a week.

That has seriously cut into my beer money.

About $35 a week average, more if we need to travel to shows on the weekend. I usually use my car just to get me to and from work, which is about 15 miles roundtrip.

Oh, and $3.75 a gallon here, for now.

I'm not sure yet. I got a 2008 Chevy Cobalt last Thursday and it came with a full tank. I really only drive locale. I get 22 city mpg and 31 hwy. mpg. The station I go to is $3.58 as of this a.m. I have no idea how much it's going to be when I fill her up.

If your car's not knocking don't sweat it. I've used 87 octane since I started driving and never had a problem.

Here's a couple excerpts from howstuffworks.com on the subject:

"The octane rating of gasoline tells you how much the fuel can be compressed before it spontaneously ignites. When gas ignites by compression rather than because of the spark from the spark plug, it causes knocking in the engine. Knocking can damage an engine, so it is not something you want to have happening. Lower-octane gas (like "regular" 87-octane gasoline) can handle the least amount of compression before igniting."

" It turns out that heptane handles compression very poorly. Compress it just a little and it ignites spontaneously. Octane handles compression very well -- you can compress it a lot and nothing happens. Eighty-seven-octane gasoline is gasoline that contains 87-percent octane and 13-percent heptane (or some other combination of fuels that has the same performance of the 87/13 combination of octane/heptane). It spontaneously ignites at a given compression level, and can only be used in engines that do not exceed that compression ratio."

In sum: you want the plug to ignite the gas/air mixture rather than the heat that results from compression. If your engine is knocking, it's the compression and not the spark plug causing piston movement and you should switch to a higher octane to allow for the higher rate of compression taking place in your particular wallet-draining engine. If you have knocking past that, you have other problemos (as my people say).

I'm about to pay $3.77 on the way home in NJ, in PA it's up to near 4 but I try not to buy there.

Well, up until today I drove a Jeep Grand Cherokee.
I put 50 bucks a week into it, and that doesnt even fill it up.
I got 12 mpg...TWELVE!

So, today I went to the dealer and said goodbye to my lovely gas guzzler,
and got a Honda Accord coupe.

I was gonna start a baby thread about it, but this'll do.

http://www.carbuyersnotebook.com/Accord_Coupe.jpg

XM radio, 6 cd changer, heated leather seats, mp3, sun/moon roof, it's pretty sweet.

I was looking for even better mpg, but when I saw it's numbers: 24/34 I was in love.

(24 = Ramirez, 34 = Ortiz)

I loved my Jeep, and kinda feel fickle, but after spending the afternoon with my new coupe,
I think I'm in love again!

Sorry to hijack the thread there, and I cant really answer your question yet since it came filled up.

My dad's been an avid rider for about 20 years now, and will only drive from Harrisburg to the shore to visit if it's nice enough to take the bike (like today). The bike's his normal mode of transportation from March to late-November/early-December.

My stepdad just put his SUV in the garage indefinitely and got his own bike.

I feel bad for the semi drivers because diesel is ridiculous right now. I have a company car so I spend $0 on gas which is awesome because I can drive the car for personal use. I pay a personal use fee every month but it's still a ton less than if I was paying for the gas because I drive over 1000 miles a week. The car I own that is mine all mine is a Mini Cooper and it gets better than 30 mpg it is a good car if you are looking for good gas mileage but it's not a very roomy car.

Gas is $4.00 here in slowhio

But i have the old flex fuel car that takes E85 so i alternate putting regular in and mixing it with the E85 which is $3.45 a gallon

But the secret on E85 they dont tell you is that you only get 70% of what you would normally get with regular gas thats why i mix it up

When my work swtiches to our new building i will go from a 40 mile roundtrip for work to 5 miles roundtrip

At that rate i would fill up once every 2 months if not longer

It takes about $75.00 to fill my Tahoe. I only live about a mile from work, so it will last depending on how much I work at my second job, which is farther. I drive a dump truck as a side job, and it costs just over $200.00 to fill one of the saddle tanks. Tuesday I'm going to buy a motorcycle.

E85 and other bio-fuels are a terrible idea. burning food for vehicle fuel is ridiculous. i like steak, but i wouldn't stuff one in my gas tank, even if it got 50 mpg!

switch-grass and other non-food bio-fuels are better, but bio is not the answer to the emerging fuel crisis.

do cars really need super?

not unless you drive them contstantly at high speeds....
given the speed limits and stop and go traffic for commuters.. it is a waste of money.

An if the engine knocks you may wanna check the oil????

I still only put between 20-30/ per fill but now have to go more often, take gas every 2-3 days but always hope the prices drop so I don't ever fill it.
With the holiday prices normally go up so by next week 20 bucks will buy me more gas.

25 gallon tank usually twice a week $80 a tank. Fuck, it's killing me. I'm a building materials salesman so I drive a lot but I'm not selling a whole lot. I've taken a BIG pay cut over the last couple years of declining home sales so the high gas prices are really getting to me.

I have a pickup which gets crappy mileage. However, since my commute is only about 15 miles each way, it's not a huge deal. Instead of waiting for the tank to hit empty, I re-fill at a quarter of a tank, and just request 60 dollars worth of gas.

Was that you outside last night?

It's now between 4.03-4.15 here on Long Island. On the south shore where I am it's at 4.03-4.09. As you head up to the north shore and in towards the city it's up to 4.15. The disparity in price from one station to the next shows that they're playing us like crackheads. On one corner it's 4.05 and across the street it's 4.11. It's a complete joke. Read the book 'Rigged' by Ben Mezrich if you want to see how bogus oil pricing is. I'm just waiting for the tourist industry to start taking such a hit that it forces the States or at least the big tourist attractions like Disney and Six Flags to gang up on the oil companies. I love how they sit at these hearings and talk about how low their profit margins are, then at the end of each quarter they announce record profits.

Holy shit. Why didn't I think about this! Where do you get a locking gas cap?!?!?

I live in an area where I don't worry too much about locking my car doors, but I park outside, and you know... desperate times... desperate measures...

It's not the cost of the gas I worry about losing. It's that my fuel gauge on my dash doesn't work ever since I ran over that step ladder in the road one foggy morning a year or so ago. They were going to have to pull the tank to replace the sensor, and rather than forking up the dough, I've been relying on my trip odometer to know how many miles since the last fill-up. If someone did siphon off my gas overnight, I'd never know it until I ran out of gas pre-maturely, and even then I'd probably think it was something else first.

Haven't driven in almost four years. Gas in Phnom Penh recently went from $4 to about $5 a gallon though, so I do pay 75 cents - the fair price for westerners, which is about double the price for Cambodians - to go across town on the back of a motorbike, (usually at the speed of Tron but with the driving skills of the blind water-headed banjo player from Deliverance). I used to pay 50c, but since the price hike, (it went up ovenight because the prices are set by the government), I have to have the same argument every day because these human ringworms try to get 2 or 3 dollars out of me every day by whining about the gas prices. Fucking poor people!

[QUOTE=nukinfuts;1735634]"I feel bad for the semi drivers" Feeling bad for the truckers is right. One bad experience with a tractor on the road gives a bad impression of truckers. Most people don't think about the job they do and the gratitude we all owe them. Just about everything we buy is run in by a trucker. Even the fuel. My hat is off to them in these tough times. Thanks to 'em.

To fill up my wifes car it costs about $120/ month and the truck is probably $180/ month.
That's with one person (my wife) driving whatever she feels like on any given day.
My work vehicle I put in about $70.00 every 2nd day... Airmiles!!!

I couldn't really care if gas keeps rising, I still have places to go and shit to do.

And really, you don't care either... if you did you'd start using public transportation and boycott the gas stations. It's just something for us all to bitch about while we are getting a long deep dicking by the government... Maaaan!

Personally, I make sure I'm lubed up enough, I'm in a comfortable position and I have my hands free to play with my nipples while I'm taking huge gas prices straight up the shitter.

My Civic gets about 35 mpg on the highway which is where I do most of my driving and a fill-up now costs about $40 which lasts me a week.

Did anyone see the article in the paper about some of the gas stations on Long Island that couldn't charge about $3.99 a gallon because their pumps weren't programmed to charge $4.00 a gallon. Apparently they had lines of people waiting to buy gas at 3.99 a gallon!

it used to be that if you bought a $20 metrocard you got 2 extra rides. a $24 value. now you get $23 on the card. so you have to save it when you only have a dollar on it, and refill it. or just buy a $40 card
