heres the encyclopedia brown story i sort of remember...
e.c. and family go for a haircut, but there are only 2 barbers in town. they both admit that there is no one else in the town to go to get your hair cut. one guy has a dirty barbershop and also has a real crappy haircut. the other guy had a clean barbershop and a snazzy haircut.

after some thought, encyclopedia brown calmly walked over to the dirty barber chair and sat down. "ive made my choice", he said.

why did he make his choice?

The snazzy barber was a pedophile?

I like the modern version where it's two tattoo artist instead of barbers.

Since they cannot cut their own hair..logic dictates that they cut each others...hence the shitty haircut guy is the better barber. Well that and the hair builds up if you are a busy barber.Plus a life's maxim come into interpretation..never trust a businessman with a neat desk.
I particularly liked the one where Bugs Meany claimed he had perfected a "knockout touch" in Judo or Jujitsu class.

I remember in one of his stories once that he did the ol' scratch the paper with the side of the pencil lead to see what written on the previous page. Brilliant! I've been using that one for years. Thanks Ency. Brown. your the bestest.

Fuck yes!

Another thing I forgot about. Thanks furtherman!

This falls into the category of great things to intro my son to when he reads. He's 9 now but we don't want to be those Nazi - "you have to learn how to read immediately" parents.

What about when Bugs Meany "found" a missing violin in the tree when he noticed a squirrel go up the tree, realize something was in the hole in the tree, and then backed down. E.B. knew Bugs had stolen the violin and was trying to cash in on the reward money because of Bugs' story. Remember why?

Oh yeah, and I wanted to bang Sally Kimball. I'm really not sure why.

Maybe the poor kid didn't want to wait in that long line at down the street at more expensive place. Maybe the kid likes to talk shop with the cheap barber. And just maybe it's none of my god damn business where this kid gets is mop chopped. Or he could be like me and not want to turn loose of any more coin for a hair cut.

I hate Encyclopedias!!!!

squirrels go up and down trees facing forward.

i remember one where he said the clue was a narrow flight away and tricked the criminal into looking outside, but don't remember any of the case other than the money shot.

I'm tight with a 4th grade teacher in a ghettofab section on the "west coast" of NJ. The cirriculum is pretty advanced in terms of what I remember from the early 80's and would likely include Mr. Brown. In fact, I'm going to recommend the books to her.

My son is 3 mo.'s and just learning how to say "gllllththhhh" and then smile.

I barely remember Encyclopedia Brown, but I couldn't stand Nancy Drew.

In the 3rd or 4th grade, Nancy Drew books became THE thing to check out of our grammar school library. I checked out one ... I think it was The Clue in the Clock (which Marge Simpson called "controversial") ... and thought it would take me a while to read.

I returned it the next day because I'd finished it. And didn't particularly enjoy it.

So ... I dug through my dad's old books and read one of his Hardy Boys novels instead. (And liked that one a great deal better than Nancy Drew!)

After the Nancy Drew fiasco, however, I stopped checking books out of the grammar school library.
