There are several single-day sporting events I look forward to every year.
One of them is SuperBowl Sunday.
The other is the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend.
That day, is of course, the day of The Double.
The Double is two races - 1100 miles - starting with the Indianapolis 500, and then 600 miles of NASCAR endurance.
The stories?
- Can Danica win?
- Has Dancing with the Stars changed Helio?
- Can an Andretti win again?
- Can Dale Jr. win?
- Will Kyle Busch continue to endear himself to NASCAR fans?

And a young, talented driver who isn't a douchebag? I like this Rahal kid.

The Indy 500 is, sadly, one of those sporting events that's the big showcase for a sport that's well past its prime, and people watch it but don't give a fuck about the sport otherwise. The Kentucky Derby is like that too.
That totally idiotic CART/Indy Car split killed open-wheel racing in this country. It wasn't just that it split one great racing league into two mediocre ones; it gave NASCAR an opening to seize auto-racing interest for itself. (Though my suspicion is that a big reason for that is that NASCAR drivers have names like "Dale" and "Tony" and "Jeff", and open-wheel racers have names like "Dario" and "Helio", but that's another argument altogether.)

Yeah, but they merged back together. If an American kid - especially be it Rahal, Andretti, or Danica wins - then it'll help the sport a lot.
I think Danica's win was a huge deal for the sport.... just wish it happened here instead of in Japan.
AND ANDRETTI'S WEARING THE HAT!!! AWESOME!!!!!

And Knox, Tony got his start in Open-Wheel. He's been wanting to race the double for a long time, but the schedules won't allow it.

I actually asked Liz, when we got a house, if I could tear up the first yard of the driveway and lay bricks there.

Rahal is going to jump to F1 at some point, that's his dream. Bobby was team boss at Jaguar (Ford) for a time, so I know he's still go some connections over there.
Speaking of F1, the GP of Monaco was actually this morning as well. In terms of globally, it's the biggest race of the three. And it was a bit wet for most of the race, which made for an intersting race.

Why is there a huge accident promo RIGHT BEFORE THE RACE?
And what's with all the Paul Dana shit? Was the accident that he died in primarily his fault?

I feel zero pitty for Danica. Wonder if she would have made that march if she was a guy? It real brave to get in someone's face when there is 0 percent chance they are going to punch you back. With every comment the announcers made they were whispering 'bitch' under their breath.

Dude, she had EVERY RIGHT to be pissed. That's not a racing deal... that was pure stupidity on Briscoe's part.

Yes it was...I'm sorry I missed this mega-thread during the Indy 500. Danica was clipped by a stupid move by another driver. I'd pay his pit a visit too.
Also, DW said something interesting regarding the Indy Car Series. He was saying now that Humpy is leaving Lowes, he should bring his talents as a promoter over to IRL to help them get back on track with ratings and filling seats at the tracks.

BTW, I DVR'd the NASCAR race....I watched the 500, went to a freinds house, and now I'm at home again at about lap 150.

He knocked himself out of the race as well. It's not like he pulled a Marco, wrecking out his teaming and cruising off in the sunset for a podium finish. You didn't see Sarah Fisher marching down into Marco's pit did you (maybe she did, but they would never show it because she not Danica).
You realize the only reason she marched down there was to make sportcenter and 11 o'clock news, because she wasn't going to make it with her average race up to that point?

There's the difference.
What Marco did WAS a "racing deal", It was hard racing, and it sucked what happened, but if anyone should be pissed, it's Kanaan at Marco. Sarah just got collected.
What happened with Briscoe was simply because they were not paying attention, and being stupid. There's a major, major difference.
It's one thing to wreck on the actual course. It's another thing ENTIRELY to wreck in the pits.
Danica's a bitch. We KNOW this. She was going to give Briscoe's team a piece of her mind. And she was running top-10 at that point. She may not have won, but you can't say what could and can't happened because there was still a lot of racing left.

Come on! She was running 6th-8th all day in a problem car. She had every right to be pissed. You see guys go after other guys all the time when they get hit because of stupidity. The frigging chauvinism in this country in 2008 is unreal! Right down to Dave constantly claiming that women's sports are a complete waste of time and shouldn't even be shown... After he said more than once that he's gonna force Julianna to play sports!?!! That makes no sense at all. Danica is a huge reason that Indy Racing is grabbing back just a little attention from NASCAR. She may be a bitch, but she can actually race. She's not just there to get attention.

Actually it's quite the opposite, I think she was taking advantage as her position as a woman to go get in his face, probably give him a shove and he was just going to have to stand there and look stupid, because he can't retaliate.
And for the record I think it's self-agrandizing and bitchy when guys do it too. Half the time they don't even take their helmets off...
Danica can drive a little bit, but she's not AJ Foyt. She's not even Arie Luyendyke... Her car should have been similar to her teammates Kanaan and Marco Andrettti, any they were pushing for the lead. She was wallowing back in 10th, and probably going to fall back more when the drivers with late pushes went to the front at the end of the race.
